The talented public speaker raced for two seasons with the men's professional team before splitting his time between sharing the team's mission to inspire, educate and empower, completing his university studies and starting his own business coaching and mentoring athletes.   The 35-year-old first discovered his love of biking at an early age. In high school, the Sydney-native noticed his best days were always the days he rode his bike to school. When the Sydney Olympics came to town, the mountain biking event and a key T1 diabetes role model in Aussie Rugby player Steve Renouf inspired him to start competing. After winning his first bike race, he never looked back.   Morris was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 10. He raced mountain bikes as a junior and at 18, added road racing to his regimen for cross-training purposes. On the road, he excelled. In 2009, Morris signed his first road contract with the Australian domestic team MACE/Wilson Racing and joined the Team Novo Nordisk development team in 2010.   Morris has never let his diabetes slow him down. In 2011, he finished fifth overall at the legendary Crocodile Trophy, a grueling 10-day Australian mountain bike event covering almost 750 miles. In 2016, he won the equally grueling Simpson Desert Bike Challenge, a five-day race on fat tire bikes across one of the world's largest sand deserts. Just prior to the pandemic Morris placed third overall at the Tour of East Timor, a stage race across the mountainous terrain in one of the world's newest nations and represented Australia at the world MTB marathon championships in Switzerland.   As a Team Novo Nordisk ambassador, Justin has worked around the world spreading the team's positive message. From 2017-2019, he took part in ‘Pedal for 7,' a successful cycle event that stopped at various hospitals, schools, and community groups across the UK. He has spent significant time speaking throughout Asia where cycling is not so mainstream to help promote the team and to drive change in diabetes.   Let's get into our interview.   POST INTERVIEW COMMENTS: All-Diabetes Pro Cycling Team | Type 1 Diabetes | Team Novo Nordisk Justin Morris - Team Novo Nordisk   Our News is sponsored by Buddy Insurance. We also sought to remove the pain points in such races, such as mandatory extra fees and continual upselling for items we feel should be all-inclusive."   “We apologise for not recognising this at the outset and hope that the triathlon community can forgive the error. We are grateful for the structure of the PTO, which provides the chance for the immediate feedback of the PTO Professionals when we've misstepped. Data. The most advanced science in the triathlon world can be found in Norway, where athletes embrace the data found in heat sensors, oxygen measuring masks and their feces. In November, under stormy, tropical skies, the reigning Olympic men's triathlon champion, Kristian Blummenfelt leapt from a pier into the Caribbean Sea. Then, 7 hours 21 minutes 12 seconds later, after swimming 2.4 miles, cycling more than 112 and running 26.2, he snapped the tape to win the Cozumel Ironman in Mexico and become the fastest ever at the Ironman distance.   Never mind that it had been his first attempt at the distance or that he had diarrhea for days beforehand. On the run, he ducked into a portable toilet twice, costing him over 90 seconds, and he still clocked a 2:35:24 marathon. He beat the triathlon record time by over six minutes.   His result shook the triathlon world to an extent that bewildered Blummenfelt, 26. “The strange thing for us was the Cozumel race got at least as much attention as the Olympics,” he said, referring to his gold medal performance at the Tokyo Games.   Jan Frodeno, the three-time Ironman world champion who held the record Blummenfelt appeared to break, called his Cozumel performance “next level.”     What's New in the 303:   Mountain Swim Series Announces Events for 2022 The 2022 Mountain Swim Series dates are on the books, check them out below! These complaints have been happening since 2017-2018 but World Athletics did not give a more clear answer until January 2020.[5] The major changes of these guidelines state that the "sole must be no thicker than 40mm" and that "the shoe must not contain more than one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material) that runs either the full length or only part of the length of the shoe. The plate may be in more than one part but those parts must be located sequentially in one plane (not stacked or in parallel) and must not overlap".[4] The components of the shoes are not the only thing that had major changes; starting April 30, 2020, "any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition".     1/1/2020 - The Nike Vaporfly Just Survived a Potential Ban World Athletics (track and field's governing body, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations) made its highly anticipated announcement on the regulation of running shoe technology. Although there had been rumors in recent weeks—aggravated by several bogus news stories—that the organization was planning on making Nike's coveted Vaporfly Next% racing shoe illegal in elite competition, this does not appear to be the case.   Rather, World Athletics will be prohibiting the use of shoe prototypes in competition. (This is a good idea.) The new rule states: “From 30 April 2020, any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition. If a shoe is not openly available to all then it will be deemed a prototype and use of it in competition will not be permitted.”   Additionally, World Athletics has issued an “immediate moratorium” on any shoe that has a heel stack height of more than 40 millimeters and more than “one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material).”   Placing a limit on sole thickness has been one of the proposed solutions on how to best regulate shoe technology going forward. The breakthrough innovation of Nike's original Vaporfly 4% shoe, released in 2017, was that it combined a carbon fiber plate with an unusually thick (over 30 millimeters) super lightweight Pebax foam midsole. Some fear that if this design development goes unchecked, racing shoes might veer towards the farcical; imagine future runners bounding along in airy platform shoes.   Make no mistake, the new 40-millimeter limit is not arbitrary. The maximum stack height of Nike's Vaporfly Next% is usually reported at around 36 millimeters, and therefore sneaks under the new threshold. However, the shoes that Eliud Kipchoge wore when he became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours last year in Vienna (code name: “AlphaFly”) are potentially well over the limit, although Nike has not provided any data since the shoe hasn't been released.    12/23/21 - World Athletics has approved new shoe rules and regulations for competition. The new rules have brought a major update to the future of the sport, as athletes will not be allowed to wear shoes that have over a 20mm stack height during competition. This rule is set to be implemented in November 2024, which is after the Paris Summer Olympics and the 2024 Diamond League season.   The previous rule was 20mm stack height for sprint and hurdle events up to 400m and 25mm for events 800m and above. The sport has seen a technological revolution in footwear over the past 10 years, but with new innovations come challenges to maintain a fair level of competition.     What's New in the 303:   How to help Boulder County fire victims Several organizations are collecting donations to help people affected by Thursday's devastating wildfire in Boulder County.   The Marshall Fire has destroyed more than 500 homes and burned more than 1,600 acres as of Thursday evening. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated as the fire spreads through the Superior, Louisville and Broomfield areas.   Several Colorado nonprofits are collecting funds to help people affected by the fires. Here's how to help. A few things stood out to me in 2021: Events were back! The joy of seeing in-person events back is hard to put into words. The energy, camaraderie, competition. And what an events season it was. Everyone in our community – race directors, coaches, clubs, officials, volunteers and athletes – continuing to work tirelessly to bring our sport back from the depths of 2020. The Olympics and Paralympics were historic with US athletes taking home the most medals of any country. Such awe-inspiring performances, in the face of so much adversity and uncertainty. Together, We Thrive. This year was full of incredible people doing equally incredible things to make our sport and community more diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible. We look forward to working with people across the country to amplify voices, celebrate successes and use multisport for what it is truly all about – bringing people together.   There is no doubt 2022 and beyond will bring us a future brighter than it ever has been. And that future has been created by you. So I thank you – for all you've done, continue to do, and will do; for challenging USA Triathlon to be the best organization it can be; for never backing down in the face of an incredibly trying 20 months; for giving all of yourself to our sport and community.   Morgan Pearson and Inside Wrapper   Closing: Merry Christmas!  Be sure to tell us your favorites from 2021! Race directors may not get as much limelight as athletes and coaches - but they should! After all, we wouldn't have any races if it weren't for the race director! This week, we chat with  Greg Hawkins, owner and race director of Kinetic Multisports, to get an inside view on how the RD is one of the most important ingredients for our race day fun and safety.  Greg started with humble beginnings, riding his bike to school because he was too proud to ride the bus. On one of his rides, he saw a sign that would change the trajectory of his life.  It was a flyer for a triathlon.  From his first race, he was hooked and his love affair for triathlons began..  He went on to volunteer and then work for a production company, which helped him to realize he loved event production and wanted to do his part to have a party on wheels.   We talk to Greg about the importance of safety at a race, what a beginner should expect, and the importance of being a USAT member (which you may recall a similar message from episode 1 when we talked with Rocky Harris).  We also chat about how racing has changed since Covid and what it takes to be a race director,  if you are interested.  If you haven't learned by now there is always a chance an episode can go off the rails and of course this episode is no different.  We talk about all things triathlon - and then some! Greg is very passionate  about creating a safe yet fun and vibrant  race experience. To help with that he stresses the importance of reading all the material sent prior to race day. 99% of the answers are there and it will help in ensuring everyone has a great race.  We also chat about the most commonly violated Rules… Check it out!    This is a great episode and I hope you learn, laugh, and #GoraceKinetic #GoKinetic  Follow Tri Beginner's luck on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.  And send any questions or feedback you have to  imreadyto@tribeginnersluck.com.

In this episode: Tapering is a well accepted part of a triathlon training program leading up to an event. But how should a taper be structured in order to get the most out of it and how long should it last? There is actually a fair bit of research on these questions and on this episode I take a look to help answer them along with some others like whether or not the 'taper tantrums' are a real thing. Plus, an interview with USAT CEO Rocky Harris. Rocky talks to me about the state of triathlon, the future coming out of the pandemic and efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the sport. In addition, we have been tracking developments at the collegiate level over the last several months, including continued online learning and student-athlete travel restrictions at many colleges and universities. Having taken these circumstances into consideration, and after consulting with members of the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club Committee, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Collegiate Club National Championships.   USA Triathlon is working diligently to find an alternate date in the fall of 2021 to host Collegiate Club Nationals in a safe and fair way for all athletes, including those with graduation dates in 2020 or 2021 who would otherwise miss the opportunity to represent their school as a senior. We will communicate any updates to the Collegiate Club Committee and all collegiate club team leaders as appropriate.     A 3D-printed custom cycling shoe, the LoreOne, will launch in April Olympian and longtime bike fitter Colby Pearce has partnered with a new company Lore for a 3D-printed custom road cycling shoe. The LoreOne, a hardshell, carbon cycling shoe, will launch in April.   Lore will 3D print the shoes using scans of a rider’s feet. The resulting carbon monocoque design will be more efficient than other shoes, while still allowing a rider’s feet to move “freely and powerfully” inside the hardshell structure, Lore claims.   How much does it cost? How much does it weigh? And how comfortable could a hardshell carbon shoe actually be? For now, Lore is big on claims and short on details, but those are promised for its April launch.   The Lore team includes people who have worked in design and engineering at brands like Apple, Tesla, Puma, DPS, Nike and Black Diamond.   “We are excited to share Lore to the world,” Lore CEO Stephan Drake said in a release. “We have an amazing team that is pushing the bleeding edge of technology and design. The LoreOne is not only the most exciting cycling shoe ever made, but is revolutionary across all footwear categories. The level of customization, performance, materials, environmental sustainability, and manufacturing technology represent a bold leap into the future.”   Pearce, a multi-time national champion and record holder, has long obsessed over fit, whether for record-setting hour record rides or for his bike-fitting clients.   “The technology, materials, design and manufacturing is light years ahead of everything else on the market,” Pearce said. “The way the athlete works with the shoe is groundbreaking, and the foothold is unparalleled. The Lore project is three massive steps forward from any other shoe on the market. Prepare to have your head explode while your feet feel true power transfer for the first time ever. The LoreOne shoe will change the way you interact with your bike, forever.”   Lore’s website is Lore.cc.     What's New in the 303:   USA Cycling Supports Colorado League – Free Junior Memberships, More Exposure for Collegiate Programs USA Cycling has joined the family of Colorado League sponsors for 2021-2023.  Together, these organizations are dedicated to advancing opportunities for young mountain bike riders in Colorado, southern Wyoming, and northern New Mexico to ensure a promising future for the sport. Through developing youth cycling opportunities and cultivating leadership, teamwork, and community, and creating a lifelong passion for cycling, we work towards a common goal of getting more kids on bikes and keep them riding through life.     Megan Hottman’s First Time In Tucson Riding and Exploring While I’ve spent a lot of time in Arizona in my life, I’ve never made it to Tucson. When I began mapping out my vanlist dreamlist of places I wanted to do, Tucson was on the list. For very specific reasons: I wanted to ride the “loop,” this amazing network of protected bike lanes all over town, totaling close to 130 miles (basically, a bike advocate’s dream come true, short of visiting Copenhagen!); and, I’ve wanted to ride Mt Lemmon, a nice long sustained climb that I’ve heard about for years.   So I set up my work week to allow for a midweek visit. Because vanlife and living a life by design, on purpose, to me means maximizing the days and times during the week as opposed to only seeking fun and adventure on weekends — you know, when the rest of humanity is out doing the same. Friends, weekday exploration is where it’s at. Their goal, to complete a 483-mile relay ride across the state of Colorado while raising money for the USA Triathlon Foundation COVID-19 Relief Fund and the Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado.  Over the course of 483 miles, the riders averaged 20 mph, climbed nearly 23,000 feet of elevation with their highest point at Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet of elevation. Just before 8:00pm and beating the sunset, all nine riders joined together for the final mile to the Kansas-Colorado state line. Among the riders in this event was USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris.  We also saw that USA Triathlon Foundation Awards $110,000 in COVID-19 Relief Fund Grants.  With races trying to find a path to get back open, we were curious how USAT is playing a role in this process.  We were able to catch up with Rocky Harris himself.  Post Interview discussion: Appreciate the straight talk you get from Rocky Like the information they are trying to convey to race directors, governing agencies and governments on the steps they are going to     Endurance News: IRONMAN Lubbock 70.3 "Postponed" We regret to announce that the 2020 Core Power IRONMAN 70.3 Lubbock triathlon cannot take place on June 28 due to the acceleration of COVID-19 infections in Texas. In accordance with our IRONMAN Safe Return to Racing protocol, the health and safety of our community is of utmost priority and in alignment with remarks made by Governor Abbott on Tuesday, June 23, it would not be responsible to host the event at this moment in time. IRONMAN Group President and CEO Andrew Messick shared, “We are grateful to Mayor Pope of The City of Lubbock and his fine team of professionals, along with our long-time partners Mike and Marti Greer,  for their outstanding work to do everything possible to host this race. But ultimately the COVID-19 headwinds in Texas right now are just too strong for the race to happen. We look forward to when we can return to Lubbock.” All registered athletes of the 2020 Core Power IRONMAN 70.3 Lubbock triathlon will be receiving an email with further information. If you have additional questions or do not receive the email with further information, please contact lubbock70.3@ironman.com. In what has been a continually evolving and challenging time globally, we recognize that the change at this late juncture will come as a disappointment but look forward to providing athletes with an exceptional race experience in the future. Racing In A COVID World We are so close to racing in a COVID world! Pools are beginning to open up. Gyms are doing the same. A few races are sticking to their calendar and are appearing to be a go in the next couple of months. But just because I am saying “racing in a COVID world” it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be business as usual. Here are my coaching tips on what to do different in your training to be ready for a race experience that too will have a very different look and feel than in the past. Let me start with the racing guidelines that are being put out by both USAT and by IRONMAN. Knowing what will likely be different at your races will help you craft your training to be ready for them.   What's New in the 303: https://303triathlon.com/usa-triathlon-operation-cocovid-19-a-success/ USA Triathlon Operation CO>COVID-19 a Success! The each gave a 2 minute overview of their books (see 303triathon Facebook live post) and then took 15 minutes each to ask questions about each other's books. At the end they both got into a debate about hydration, which was topic common to both of their books.  Christie is a proponent of drink to thirst and being keenly aware of your thirst sensation and triggers. Both were skeptical of the commercialism of endurance and recovery products in the market I asked Christie about HRV as a reliable predictor of recovery and the accuracy of the commercial products in the market.  Bottom line is that it's not very reliable in her opinion, but you can add it to other methods of assessing your recovery.   Other News: Announcing USA Triathlon's Youth Scholarship Program  Dear Coaches, I’m proud to announce a youth scholarship program that USA Triathlon and the USA Triathlon Foundation will launch tomorrow in an effort to not only grow overall youth participation in multisport, but also to reduce barriers to entry for underserved youth. After kicking off the program with a special month-long promotion in May, we will continue to accept donations and distribute scholarships throughout the year. Your participation is important, as we need your help to identify youth athletes who may be scholarship candidates. During the month of May, for every USA Triathlon adult annual membership newly purchased or renewed, or for every current membership not set to expire that is extended by one year, the USA Triathlon Foundation will donate one youth digital membership to a deserving child. (Youth digital memberships include all of the standard USA Triathlon Youth Membership benefits, but without the delivery of printed materials by mail.) Our goal during this month-long “Buy One, Give One” initiative is to inspire 10,000 youth digital membership donations, which can be distributed to youth throughout the year. The scholarships awarded will be needs-based. Beyond May, the Foundation will maintain this youth membership donation page, where anyone can donate a membership for $10. As we roll out this initiative, I’m asking for your help in the following ways: Help us reach deserving youth: If you coach youth triathletes who may be candidates for this scholarship, or if you personally know an aspiring young athlete, please share this application form with them: https://forms.gle/r9MEn6TG4BQHHSqA9. Applicants will hear back from USA Triathlon within two weeks. Please note that if the applicant is planning to use the youth membership for an upcoming race, he or she must apply at least 30 days in advance of the race date. Encourage participation in May: This is an excellent opportunity to engage not only parents of youth triathletes, but also USA Triathlon adult members who may not otherwise be involved with our youth programming. Please share our press release about the “Buy One, Give One” promotion, which will be published on usatriathlon.org tomorrow morning. Encourage your network of triathletes to renew their memberships in May (if their membership does not expire in May, that’s okay — it will simply be extended for one year past the current expiration date).  -Rocky Harris, USAT CEO Upcoming Interviews: Running coach Andrew Simmons of Lifelong Endurance is joining us to talk about running coaching tips.  We can add coach Andrew to the long list of coaches who advocate lots of base work and some high end intensity.  His TrainingPeaks article Training in the Grey Zone: How to Avoid the Zone 3 Plateau is a read recommendation, but we are going to talk about it on the show. Coach Mikael Eriksson of Scientific Triathlon and "That Triathlon Show" podcast is joining us about training zones and how to make sure they are accurate and current.  With the context of the training (energy zones) we are going to talk about the importance of training volume in different training zones to achieve the right progressive overload and adaptations, and the many issues that can come from not executing the right training. Christie Aschwanden, author of "Good To Go".  Christie Aschwanden is science writer for FiveThirtyEight. She is also health columnist for The Washington Post.   She is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, a contributing editor for Runner’s World and a former contributing writer for Bicycling.  She is co-host of EMERGING FORM, a podcast about the creative process. Rocky's ultimate goal is to make triathlon the all-inclusive sport of everyone and to grow membership by 100,000 members. His challenge to all of us is to invite 10 new people to Tri our amazing sport.
