Today, I have two special guests joining me in studio, Kevin McHale is back for his second time on the show and I'm so excited to welcome Austin P. McKenzie for the first time. Separately they are amazing performers on stage screen and in music, but together they are a powerhouse couple, encouraging each other in their art and creating beautiful memories together outside of work as well. Of course unless you've been living under a rock you know that Kevin played Artie Abrams on one of my favorite shows, Glee along with his own music dancing, acting and much more. Austin wowed audiences on both coasts with his performance as Melchior in Deaf West Theatre's “Spring Awakening” as well as being front and center again as the younger Cleve Jones in “When We Rise” and has made some impressive music of his own, so let's get into it. SummaryKevin McHale and Austin P. McKenzie discuss their relationship, their experiences in the entertainment industry, and their music collaborations. They talk about their journey in the music industry, including their individual projects and their work together. They also discuss their experiences on shows like Glee, When We Rise, and Drag Race. The conversation highlights the importance of communication, personal space, and the value of their creative collaborations. Overall, the conversation showcases their passion for music, their growth as artists, and their strong bond as a couple. Kevin and Austin discuss their journey in the music industry, the progress they have made, and the importance of being critical and supportive. They also talk about their experiences with album listening parties and the discomfort of receiving attention. The conversation touches on the changes in the music industry and the challenges faced by performers. They share advice for upcoming performers and discuss their upcoming projects. The episode concludes with a discussion about their Christmas traditions and their involvement in the Snixmas fundraiser. Takeaways • Starting a music journey requires incremental progress and the ability to adapt to change. • Being critical and supportive is important in helping artists grow and improve. • Receiving attention can be uncomfortable for some performers. • The music industry has undergone significant changes, including the rise of streaming platforms. • Giving back and supporting charitable causes is important for artists. Alexandria Wailes is an accomplished actor, choreographer and dancer who just this last season appeared on Broadway in the acclaimed revival of Ntozake Shange's seminal play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf.” The production, directed by UNCSA alum Camille A. Brown, held one notable surprise, the use of American Sign Language, since Alexandria, who is Deaf, played the Lady in Purple, a part that had not originally been written as a Deaf character. This was not her first time on Broadway. She understudied Marlee Matlin in the revival of “Spring Awakening,” and then she went on in the part for the run's final month. Before that, she acted in the legendary Deaf West Theatre production of “Big River,” which after its Broadway run toured throughout the U.S. and even played not once but twice in Tokyo. She's acted in some of the country's most respected regional theaters, from Minneapolis's Mixed Blood Theater to Los Angeles's Kirk Douglas Theater, and she has also been featured in several popular TV shows, including “Nurse Jackie” and “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” She is a member of Heidi Latsky Dance Company, and she is the co-founder of BHO5, a company whose mission is, “to usher in a new era of authentic artistic representation of American deaf people.” In this episode, Alexandria describes how she crafted her remarkable career as a multidisciplinary performer and explains the work that must still be done to ensure that not only Deaf but also hearing performers can feel fully informed and bolstered in work that features Deaf artists and/or subjects. http://www.alexandriawailes.com/home.htmlhttps://www.bho5.org/
Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau
Matty (@teaguemiller) and Kikau (@kikautown) check in with Jacob Brent (@jacobbrentstagram) and David Coolidge (@david.coolidge.3) who are now both at different institutions since we last spoke on the podcast. Some of their recommendations include taking a trip to NYC, asking students for New Musical recommendations, embedding Spotify lists on Canvas, meditation, the importance of being surrounded plants and flowers! Read Bios Below: Jacob Brent is a veteran Broadway performer with a MFA in Musical Theatre. With extensive experience performing, directing, choreographing and teaching, Mr. Brent has been recognized by The New York Times as knowing how to inspire actors. As a performer, Jacob is probably best known for his portrayal of Mr. Mistoffelees in the Broadway, London and DVD productions of Cats. Now on the other side of the table, he brings the same commitment and passion for performing to directing, choreographing and teaching. When not working as a Director and Choreographer around the United States, Jacob is an Assistant Professor at Shenandoah Conservatory and frequently teaches at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway in NYC. Mr. Brent is actively involved in the international Junior Theatre Festival and pilot productions of new Broadway Jr. musicals... always looking to inspire the next generation of artists and audiences. “I believe the world is a better place if there is more theatre in it. There is only more theatre in it if there are more people making it. So, I do everything I can to help inspire, educate people to make more theatre. Does that mean I can produce every show? Unfortunately not.” What's in this episode? Get a sneek peak into the brand new musical The Griswold's Family Vacation! What exactly is producing? How do you pick a city to do an out of town tryout? How does the industry treat multi-hyphenates? How are multi-hyphenates like small businesses? How does Ken commit to being an accessible producer? How Hal Prince inspired Ken by saying one simple thing. What is successful producing? Joy the Musical! “In the business world, if you invent a product – you are the creator of that thing. You are an artist. You just designed the thing – you made it out of nothing. And then you have to raise the money for it. So, you're producing it yourself. All those people that go on Shark Tank, they are raising the money, they are doing the things. No one says, “Ugh, how dare you!” No, that's what they do. That's what Sara Blakely had to do for Spanx, that's what Mark Zuckerberg had to do for Facebook – all of it. They create something and then they raise it – but in our industry people roll their eyes.” Ken Davenport (Producer) is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer whose credits include A Beautiful Noise, Once On This Island (Tony Award), The Play that Goes Wrong, Groundhog Day (Tony nomination), Deaf West Theatre's Spring Awakening (Tony nomination), It's Only a Play starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, Macbeth starring Alan Cumming, Godspell, Kinky Boots (Tony Award), The Visit (Tony nomination) as well the Off-Broadway productions of Altar Boyz, The Awesome 80s Prom and many more. Davenport's productions have been produced internationally in over 25 countries around the world. He was the Executive Producer for North America for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and is the Theatrical Consultant for Primary Wave Music Publishing. His blog has been featured in every major publication around the world, from the New York Times to Vanity Fair. He conceived the best-selling boardgame Be A Broadway Star (available on Amazon) and he is an avid golfer. Ken is a Massachusetts native, raised in Sturbridge, MA, who grew up going to shows at the Colonial Theatre. He dedicates his career to his late father, Dr. Kenny Dipchand Hasija, an Indian immigrant who always dreamed about going into the theater but encouraged his son to do so instead. Other productions in development include Harmony by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, The Griswolds' Broadway Vacation, Joy and The Ten. www.kendavenport.com Instagram: @kendavenportbway Learn more about your ad choices. Currently starring as Cinderella in the Broadway revival of “Into The Woods”, Krysta Rodriguez is a talented actor, singer, and dancer with countless Broadway, TV and film credits. As the world starts to adjust to the new normal, she talks about her life and being thrust back on stage in a well-received show, which was completely unexpected for her. Playing the role of Cinderella made her realize that while it's fun to watch a show, it's even more fun to perform because there's “no bottom to it”. She reflects on how said role gives her a fresh perspective of Cinderella, and what the pressures to become a mother means. For Krysta, it was her search for fun that made her come back to acting, and with all her accomplishments and fulfilled dreams, she can still find fulfillment in different ways. Her dream of theatre leads her to her bigger "dream of life", which includes traveling, home design, and having meaningful relationships. From playing iconic people like Liza Minelli to iconic characters like Cinderella, she tries to give a fresh take by finding a lifeline as to how she and these characters are alike. She recalls her "Spring Awakening"days, the impact it has on her, and the bond she formed with the cast, most especially with the Deaf West revival cast, which was also the time she was going through therapy after getting diagnosed with cancer. Krysta opens up about her healing journey, why she decided to go public about it, her blog, ChemoCouture and how it became her form of activism, and personal growth as her number one life motivation. Krysta Rodriguez is a talented actress and singer with countless stage and tv credits under her name. She made her Broadway debut in the short-lived 2005 jukebox musical "Good Vibrations". Later on, she became a replacement for the role of Bebe in the Broadway revival of "A Chorus Line". Krysta has also played many ensemble and understudy parts in the Broadway productions of "Spring Awakening", "In the Heights", and the regional production of "The Boy Friend" directed by Julie Andrews. Her other stage credits include "What We're Up Against", "A Chorus Line", "The Addams Family", "First Date", “Hercules”, and “West Side Story” among others. She is also best known for her tv roles as Ana Vargas in "Smash", Summer Henderson in "Trial & Error", Maxine Griffin in "Quantico", and Ms. Cruble in "Daybreak." Her other tv credits include "Inside Amy Schumer", “Gossip Girl”, and “Halston” where she plays the role of Liza Minnelli. Her film credits include "The Virginity Hit", "My Bakery in Brooklyn", “The Bitch Who Stole Christmas”, and “Killing Diaz”. In 2015, Krysta was diagnosed with breast cancer, and started a blog, ChemoCouture.com to share her journey during chemotherapy as well as fashion, beauty, and wellness advice. That same year, she also returned as Isle in the Deaf West Theatre production of "Spring Awakening" as well as its Broadway production. She is currently starring as Cinderella in the 2022 Broadway revival of “Into The Woods”. Troy Kotsur is a study in perseverance. The Arizona native spent years honing his craft on stage at the National Theatre of the Deaf and the Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles—all the while wondering if Hollywood could ever fully embrace a deaf actor. “It's almost like a hair in my beard, just this one hair, and that represents the opportunities that I was given,” he says. But that drive—or “stubbornness,” as he himself puts it—has finally paid off on a historic level. For his role in writer/director Sian Heder's “CODA,” Kotsur has been the one constant of this year's awards season, snagging wins at the Gotham Awards, the SAG Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards on the road to the 94th Academy Awards, where he is nominated for best supporting actor. A win would mark the first for a deaf male actor, and just the second for a deaf actor ever behind the trailblazing footsteps of Kotsur's “CODA” co-star, Marlee Matlin. In this “In the Envelope” episode, Kotsur walks Backstage through every stage of his winding journey, from the lessons learned from live theater, to a brief pitstop in the “Star Wars” galaxy, to the significance of his belated “CODA” breakthrough. Along the way, he offers invaluable advice to all actors—deaf or hearing—on the power of on-screen silence, scene partner eye contact, and never giving up. We learned how to crush writer's block, how to squeeze a few more hours into each day for your REAL work (not that day job work), how to increase your confidence . . . and more. We got such great feedback on this free event that we decided to do it again! But better.

About this episode: Before I crowdfunded Godspell, I had a thesis. “There are thousands of people out there who would love to invest in Broadway shows . . . they just don't know how to do it, or who to talk to.” Sure enough, when we announced our plans for Godspell, thousands of leads poured in. In between placing all those return calls I remember thinking, “Huh, will you look at that . . . I got this one right.” Of course, not all those people invested (in the end we had about 750 investors), but thousands expressed interest and proved my thesis correct. And all those thousands of people had questions. Five years later, people still have questions about investing in Broadway shows. As I've spoken to more and more potential investors, I've noticed that many of the questions are the same. That's why I've created this FAQ for Broadway Investing. So whether you're a potential Broadway Investor looking to dip your toes into our theatrical waters, or whether you're a Producer looking to raise money for your show, I think you'll find these Qs and their appropriate As helpful. Things have changed since May of 2020. Shoot, things have changed since yesterday! But since May of 2020, when I first posted my “What The Broadway Recovery Will Look Like” series? Well, dang it, can any of you have imagined that we'd only have one Broadway show running a year later? Not me. Not me. Now that we've been through the great theatrical drought of 2020 (thanks, Covid!), I thought it was time to revise my prediction. Because, in case I didn't mention it. Things have ch-ch-ch-changed. I arrived in New York City during the Golden Age of Off-Broadway. Forever Plaid, Nunsense, And The World Goes Round, Cryptogram, Family Secrets, and more, were a few of the shows running in theaters under 499 seats . . . in commercial productions! And many actually recouped! At the beginning of the pandemic, I called everyone I knew for advice. I'm talking big time theater people, as well as big time business people. I got amazing advice. And it reminded me how important it was to ask for advice from others who are at places in their lives where you want to be. (And not just from a business “producer's perspective” . . . but from a family perspective, a health perspective, a spiritual perspective, and more.) One of the best pieces of advice I got was . . . “Ken, the people and companies who are going to come out of this ahead are the ones who are going to make use of this time.” Referenced in this episode: The TheaterMakers Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/theatermakersstudio Continue the conversation: www.instagram.com/kendavenportbway The Producer's Perspective: www.theproducersperspetive.com About the podcast: After 6 years of podcasting with one style, we're shaking it up here - no guests! If you've been following The Olympics this year, or if you're on the internet, you probably heard Simone Biles withdrew from an individual all-around gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympics in an effort to focus on her mental health and well-being, a decision which came one day after she removed herself from the team final. After watching one of the most recent NYC Mayoral debates this year, I realized one profession who has to raise more money than a Broadway Producer is a Politician. When I was in college at Tisch, I, like every other student at NYU, tried to get into nightclubs on the weekend. And for some reason, the fancy door people, with their super chic outfits, always turned me away. In hindsight, it might have something to do with my khaki pants from The Gap, white shirt from The Gap and blue blazer . . . from JC Penney. I did get into one. Once. One of the ladies from my acting class at Strasberg took pity on me, and escorted me past the velvet rope on her arm. (You know who you are, and I'm still thankful.) When I got inside, well, things got worse. Listen to this week's episode to find out what happened AND how a nightclub inspired me to create a new place for the cool theater people. Sitting on the other side of the table is something that every actor should do. It's incredibly educational and inspirational because frankly, you realize that while there are lots and lots of people who call themselves actors, there's a much smaller group of actors (and talent is only a small part of that definition, by the by). Since so few actors get a chance to sit where producers and directors sit, here are my 10 tips on how to have a better audition experience. It has been 10 years (!) since I crowdfunded Godspell. It remains one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in this business. It took two years to put together. It took three law firms. I had to pass a securities exam. Oh, and let me tell you when this SEC slaps your wrist in the midst of your offering, you lose some sleep. But, like most difficult things, it was also one of the best things I ever did for my business. And my life. Not only did we fund the production, and help launch the careers of some superstars, but I’m also still friends with many of “People of Godspell”, which is what we called our Producers and Investors (we had over 730 of them!). We created a family. And it still exists. (That’s pretty common with Godspell, actually, as anyone in it can attest.) After we successfully crowdfunded the show, using an old regulation called a “Reg A,” Congress passed The Jobs Act . . . which made it MUCH easier for businesses to crowdfund. (Bad timing on my part!) Everyone predicted an explosion of this type of microfinancing in all industries . . . Broadway and Off-Broadway included. And it didn’t happen. I don’t know of ONE Broadway or Off-Broadway production to utilize the new “Regulation CF” since it was passed. Why? Here are three reasons why. As the theater comes back to life, marketing is going to be more important than ever before. But before we start advertising, there are things we need to do first: ask our audience how they're feeling about returning, what's on their minds about the return of theater, what type of theater they are in the mood to see, etc. Referenced in this episode: Learn More about TheaterMakers Studio: www.thetheatermakersstudio.com The TheaterMakers Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/theatermakersstudio Continue the conversation: www.instagram.com/kendavenportbway The Producer's Perspective: www.theproducersperspetive.com About the podcast: After 6 years of podcasting with one style, we're shaking it up here - no guests! Are revivals an endangered species? What do we do with the beloved classics? What replaces revivals if they go away? In February, Whitney Wolfe Herd became the youngest female billionaire on the planet. And she did it by breaking into one of the most competitive markets around . . . online dating. Whenever anyone breaks through ceilings like Whitney, the first thing I do is jump up and down for them and tell as many people as I can. I am responding to the NEW protocols released by Actors Equity Association for the return of live theater. As reported by Phillip Boroff (formerly of Bloomberg News and now of his own Broadway Journal), those protocols include things like: Mass transport cannot be used. A private car and driver must be provided for every AEA member reporting to/from rehearsal (Uber and Lyft services do not qualify). Members must be put up in hotels if they don’t live alone. 3 required tests before rehearsals begin, each of which must be paid for by the Producer and cannot be covered by the Actor’ Health Plans, even if they have coverage. And a lot more. You can read all of the posted guidelines, right on the AEA website. (They’re incredibly well organized and separated by the type of production a Producer might consider in the near future (indoor, outdoor, etc.) If you want to read more of my thoughts on these new protocols, go to my blog. Welcome to the miniseries, The Producer's Perspective LIVE! From The Pandemic. Inspired by my podcast and check-ins with friends, I started The Producer’s Perspective LIVE! I started going live every night at 8pm with a superstar TheaterMaker to check in with them and see how they were doing and how this pandemic has affected them. Many shared how they’ve been keeping those creative juices flowing, sharing many fun memories, raising money and awareness for The Actors Fund and other charitable organizations needing our support. We even started sharing ‘something to make you smile’ by featuring a new music video one of you in the community produced, directed, wrote, performed in! In this first episode, you’ll hear me testing the livestream platform LIVE and in front of our very first virtual audience! There was a lot of uncertainty back on March 23, 2020 when we started this. I say in this episode that we’ll go live for as long as Broadway is shut down . . . and I did not think that we would still be doing this in July! Timely, inspiring, powerful, conversation from today's arrests to the need for protests, new thinking, actions, and much more conversation, with actress, activist, and advocate, Monica Horan Rosenthal of Everybody Loves Raymond. Monica walks her talk and has in big ways for years. From Inner-City Arts, where's she's a fierce advocate and facilitator for arts in the schools, The Rosenthal Theatre, which is a creative home for innovative and diverse performance, education and artist engagement which seeks to nurture and illuminate the creative spirit of young people and adults by enabling them to create, present and experience new work, Homeboy Industries, working alongside Jane Fonda, producing Deaf West Theatre, and championing a young Barak Obama while still a senator, are just some of her passions. We talked her path as a young girl outside Philly, with a forward-thinking father, going to Hofstra and a fated meeting with another alum, a Mr. Phil Rosenthal. Great stories about their parents, kids, and how their life made its way to the TV screen repeatedly. I adore this vivacious, intelligent, compassionate woman. She's a power of example. I aspire to do as she does, and it wouldn't suck to have what she's having. Check out Somebody Feed Phil, season 3, streaming on Netflix for a taste. I met Alex Wyse 3 or 4 years ago after an event and we became quick friends. Aside from being hilarious, he has such a wealth of experience and the perspective he's gained from all the work he's done is so informative and, I think, helpful for anyone who's trying to figure out how to navigate a career in entertainment. He's worked on and off-broadway, in television, film, as a producer and most recently he and his writing partner, Wesley Taylor, released the third season of their award winning web series INDOOR BOYS. I thought this would be a perfect time to sit down and reflect with Alex on where he's at. He was pretty insistent with me that this not be a rundown of his resume, which I was thrilled to hear. I wasn't quite sure where the conversation would take us, but we found ourselves talking about self-worth, the definition of success, creating your own path, mothers and sons, and much much more. Wether you know Alex or not, I think you're really going to come to appreciate what's he's got to share. On television, Wyse has appeared in multiple roles since 2010 including Bored to Death, Switched at Birth, The Bold and the Beautiful, Marvel's Iron Fist, and Masters of Sex. On film, he appeared opposite America Ferrera in X/Y. With Wesley Taylor, he co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in the web series Indoor Boys. To date, it has been nominated for eighteen Indie Series Awards and won six, including Best Web Series – Comedy, Best Writing – Comedy, and Best Lead Actor – Comedy for Wyse. In theater, he performed in various regional productions before making his Broadway debut in Lysistrata Jones, which ran at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 2011 to 2012. Also on Broadway, he played schoolboy Georg Zirschnitz in the Deaf West Theatre's production of Spring Awakening, and in 2018, he joined the musical Waitress, as Ogie. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in Lysistrata Jones, Triassic Parq, Bare, and Ride the Cyclone. In 2013–2014, he toured with the national company of Wicked, playing the role of Boq. And in 2015, he appeared opposite Evan Rachel Wood and Rumer Willis in For the Record: Dear John Hughes in Los Angeles. He also co-produced the Broadway transfer of Heidi Schreck's play What the Constitution Means to Me, which opened at the Helen Hayes Theater on March 31, 2019. The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. The myth of "making it" tells us that our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on a specific outcome when the truth is that there is no moment of arrival - the journey is never ending. This podcast will serve as an archive of individual perspectives and a source of inspiration for anyone navigating their own creative path. It's an opportunity to reflect on where we've been, where we're at, and where we're going. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DEAF WEST PRESENTS: THE SOLID LIFE OF SUGAR www.latheatrebites.com 7.9 out of 10 - Above Average! www.latheatrebites.com Candid, uninhibited and visceral. A Deaf couple's relationship is revealed through their lovemaking in a startlingly intimate portrait of a marriage. Hello, I'm Patrick Chavis and you are listening to LA Theatre Bites Review of The Solid Life of Sugar Water Playing now at Inner City Arts in Downtown Los Angeles September 5th - October 13th, 2019. The Solid Life of Sugar Water gives you a raw, tragic and honest portrayal of a relationship. The ups, the downs and even bigger downs through the relationship of a deaf couple. The strong acting and voice over from the cast keep you and pull you in with some incredibly powerful moments. But it's also attached to other moments and ideas that seem more interested in sounding poetic then actually doing anything interesting. The Solid Life of Sugar Water is the story of a Deaf Couple. Alice played by Sandra Mae Frank and her partner Phil played by Tad Cooley. We get to experience an intense amount of intimacy as we watch the couple share their intimate moments during sex. Their stories of how they met and also a very tragic situation in their relationship. This is my first show at the Deaf West Theatre and also my first deaf show I've ever seen, and I loved how blocking wise the show was set up. I'm not deaf and I don't read sign much of the language being communicated in the way doesn't really communicate much to me besides the beauty of form you can admire without fully understanding something like not being able to read Japanese but being able to appreciate the art in creating the symbols. Because nothing is spoken out loud by the actors but from somewhere else, you feel like you're inside the actors heads the entire show. Even though these are deaf characters and they are communicating right in front of you with sign. Watching this show is like asking someone you just met, how they met, and they told you that and way, way more then you ever wanted to know. And in that way the show can feel a little heavy emotionally and feel monotonous. But it's also very human because of this very reason. The set of the play is dimly lit bedroom inverted so the bed is facing the audience as if we are looking down at the room from the ceiling. This is an adult show as a good majority of the show is about sex and all those spicy details about this couple's relationship. Why does this show work because you can feel the intimacy between Frank and Cooley. Sandra Mae Frank pulls off a heart wrenching and dramatic performance with phenomenal physical movement. I give the Solid Life of Sugar Water. A 7.9 out of 10 - It's Above Average! Thank you for Listening!

We focus on "Spring Awakening," Deaf West Theatre's radical reinterpretation of the TONY-winning musical of Frank Wedekind's 1890 play, with director Michael Arden and actors - Alex Boniello, Daniel Durant, Marlee Matlin and Camryn Manheim.
David J. Kurs is the producer and artistic director of Deaf West Theatre. Their 2015 production of Spring Awakening, an intermodal rock-musical adaptation of a controversial late-19th-century German play about growing up in a sexually repressive culture, had an extended run, and is headed for Broadway. Pick your format, whatever your format, and listen to/watch/read Mr. Kurs talk about all things involved in being an Artistic Director and his company’s second foray to Broadway, like: Why deaf actors make the best actors around. Why, unlike other Artistic Directors of nonprofits, DJ doesn’t want Deaf West to have its own venue. How Broadway can be more accessible. The challenges of marketing Deaf West productions to a mainstream audience . . . in Los Angeles. How Spring Awakening got started, and why it’s a symbolic production for the deaf community. The Tony-winning musical "Spring Awakening," a coming-of-age musical about teenagers and sex, has returned to Broadway. The original production of the musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik closed only in 2009, and thus might seem to be making an unusually quick return. However, the new production on stage at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre takes a very novel approach. It’s from the Los Angeles-based company Deaf West Theatre and the cast features a mixture of hearing and deaf actors. Casting deaf actors in a musical may seem like a challenging prospect. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood explains the mechanics of the production and whether or not the show merits its quick return to Broadway.
Michael Arden is an actor, musician and stage director. He made his Broadway debut as Tom Sawyer in the 2003 Roundabout and Deaf West revival of Big River. He played the title character in Pippin for the World AIDS Day Broadway benefit concert in November 2004. His regional theatre credits include Pippin, God of Vengeance, Falsettoland, Tom Jones' Harold and Maude, West Side Story, Songs for a New World, The Common Pursuit and The Winter's Tale. He directed Deaf West Theatre's acclaimed Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. The production marked his return to Deaf West and featured a cast made up of both deaf and hearing actors, performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and English. On May 3, 2016 Arden received a Tony Award nomination in the category Best Direction of a Musical for his work on the Spring Awakening revival. Listen in to hear Michael and I talk about some things Spring and some things not, like . . . What it was like going to school at Juilliard . . . and how they reacted when he left early. Why there is a great theater scene in Los Angeles. How being a Director has made it both harder and easier for him to work for one as an Actor. What the heck is the Milan Conference and why does it make Spring Awakening ideal for incorporating hearing and deaf actors into the production? How you should wear multiple hats with pride.
