Mommy issues. Performance art. Fisting. This first episode has it all.  Welcome to The After Party, hosted by Michael Kushner and Eila Mell! Celebrate the mammoth effort of opening a show on Broadway. Whether you have seen the show, watched the slime tutorials, entered lotteries, or are begging for tickets for your birthday – dive into the beginning, middle, and sometimes premature end of what it means to be on Broadway straight from the people working on your favorite shows. This isn't just an ordinary interview show – we dive in deep asking hard-hitting questions. Hosts Eila Mell and Michael Kushner will take you on an educational, yet emotional and very fun journey as you learn every detail of what goes into opening, sustaining, and closing your favorite Broadway shows. This podcast features spoilers, so make sure you're ready for them if you haven't seen the show.  On our inaugural episode, we have the incomparable Emmy and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon dive deep with us into the dark, humorous, and boundary pushing new play The Seven Year Disappear.  Naphtali's (Taylor Trensch) world-famous performance artist mother (Cynthia Nixon) disappeared suddenly seven years ago. And yet, he sees her everywhere: in the faces of friends, coworkers, the guy he's flirting with. When his mother returns with few answers and a major request, Naphtali is forced to confront what he's spent years trying to forget. A funny, deeply human mystery of mothers and sons, coming of age, and coming apart.  The New Group presents the world premiere production of The Seven Year Disappear by Jordan Seavey, featuring Emmy and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon (The Gilded Age, And Just Like That, Little Foxes) and Taylor Trensch (Camelot; Hello, Dolly!), directed by New Group Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott. Previews begin Tuesday, February 6 in advance of an Official Opening Night on Monday, February 26. A limited Off-Broadway engagement is slated through Sunday, March 24 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street).  Learn more about your ad choices. Previous guest Michael Kushner loves to use the term multi-hyphenate to illustrate the many ways we can express our creative selves. Well, Corrie Legge describes herself as a multi-passionate actor, having performed in television, film, theater, commercials, video games, audiobooks, and more. She's also a filmmaker and a coach, helping others to build thriving creative careers without having to sacrifice a fulfilling personal life in the process. Corrie and I spoke earlier this year about a particular struggle she faced that actually led her into work as a voiceover artist, which she now balances with her other role of being a mother. Actors are no strangers to making choices. Every time we step onto the stage or into an audition room, we are faced with decisions to make. What character traits to emphasize? How to relate to others in the scene? Why is this story being told? These choices can make or break a performance or audition.    But the choices that actors make don't end when we leave the stage or audition room. They extend far beyond our professional lives and into our personal responsibilities as well. Actors are constantly juggling the demands of a career with personal priorities, always having to strike a balance between our craft and our private lives. Sometimes, these choices can be incredibly difficult. Actors may be faced with the choice between pursuing our dreams or just making rent, between accepting a big role or spending more time with family, or between living in New York or elsewhere. Michael shares how he changed the definition of multi-hyphenate in order to include any artist that has multiple proficiencies.  Michael also dives deep into Broadway. He emphasizes that you do not need a BFA in order to successfully reach Broadway stardom, but rather anyone from any background with the confidence and talent can achieve it. There was a study that came out the year before the pandemic called “Quantifying and Predicting Success in Show Business.” It starts off by saying that the unemployment rate for actors hovers around 90% —now, this was before Covid, when unemployment shot up to 100% for all actors. More recent statistics, however, show us bouncing back with about 85% of actors unemployed at any given time, while only 12.08% earn more than $1000 a year. Now, any actor who's been around for a while has probably heard these doomsday numbers before. But if there's one thing I hope that you've gathered from listening to this podcast, is that “making it” can mean many different things, and it can happen in any number of ways. This is why being a multi-hyphenate can be extremely beneficial, not only for us professionally but personally as well. Michael Kushner is an expert at multi-hyphenating—he's producer, director, podcaster, actor, photographer, and educator. Earlier this year he added author to that list, when he released his first book titled How to Be a Multi-Hyphenate in the Theatre Business. It's full of conversations, advice, and tips from his wonderful podcast called Dear Multi-Hyphenate. More importantly, though, he's the partner, and soon to be husband of another former guest of this podcast, Remy Germinario, and so it's great to bring Michael here to talk about his own career—the challenges he's faced in figuring out its many paths and what it's taught him about his own value and worth as an artist.  Timeline of this episode's conversation, including the bonus segments: 03:17 - Michael and Patrick discuss his upcoming marriage  4:26 - Story #1: Almost making his New York City debut 14:07 - Story #2: The long-term effect of Covid on his life and work 20:16 - How Michael juggles all the various jobs he has  29:25 - Story #3: Why people think he's given up acting (even though he hasn't) 36:53 - Creating and producing his own one-man show 43:32 - What led him to write a book about being a multi-hyphenate 49:36 - Bonus Segment: Michael's audition story for 13 the Musical on Broadway 53:49 - Bonus Segment: Michael answering the Final Five questions     Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna get the full conversations of previous and future episodes (which include Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get early access to these episodes without pesky promotions, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. Carlie Craig (MadTV) and host Michael Kushner started their journey into the theatre industry together when they were young kids. Growing up doing theatre in a facility that houses national tours, music performances, comedians, fine art and more - it allowed us to be exposed to a plethora of different kinds of art.  The pandemic has caused many artists to revisit the things they know are true. And for Carlie, it's back to the basics. Heading back to her home state of Florida, she's not only spending a temporary time where she grew up but also spending time with the teachers who helped shape her.  When Carlie headed back to Florida, she hit up her first voice teacher. “I can't really explain it… just something, when I was deciding to come home for a couple of months, something was just lingering in the back of my head that was like “You should call Gisbert” because I knew being home, I wanted to work on my craft… I wanted to continue to evolve. I wanted to continue to grow.”  After some personal road bumps and soul searching, Carlie found herself with an opportunity to invest in herself and her healing journey. It seems to be a pandemic theme, doesn't it?  But when Carlie has a will, she finds a way, “What I've learned,” she says, “as long as you have some sort of finish line in place, everything else will work itself out.” Even when she booked 54 Below in NYC for a solo show before she even could afford a plane ticket, Carlie figured out a way to make it happen. After MadTV abruptly ended, Carlie listened to what she knew best… going back to the stage. And that's what this episode is all about -- listening to what is true to you and following it through. Carlie's vibrance is contagious, and truly, she makes you feel like everything is achievable, no matter what. After listening to Carlie's stories of how she booked some of her biggest credits to date, anything actually is achievable. Carlie Craig is an actress, singer and South Florida native who is most known for her work on the CW's reboot of the iconic sketch show MADtv. Carlie moved to Los Angeles ten days after graduating from Florida State University with her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre & Media Production. She then began her work as assistant to Broadway star and YouTube sensation, Todrick Hall, which led to touring with him internationally as a singer & actress, starring in his hit MTV docuseries Todrick and serving as a vocalist on his groundbreaking visual album, Straight Outta Oz. Carlie gained online recognition with her video Celebrity Impressions, which has been viewed over 8 million times across multiple platforms. She then appeared on USA's comedy competition show, First Impressions with Dana Carvey, where she wowed the SNL alum with her spot-on impersonations of Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth and Emma Stone. Carlie has performed her all-original one woman musicals Have Several Seats and Me! The Musical! in cabaret venues across Los Angeles & NYC and cannot wait to bring her shows back to audiences again once we are all finally vaccinated. You can currently catch Carlie starring in Kevin Hart's LOL Network comedy series The Donors, streaming now on lolnetwork.com  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Wingspan Arts aims to enrich the lives of young people in and around New York City through multi-disciplinary arts education programs both in and out of the classroom. Our programs emphasize the value of theatre, music, visual arts, and dance while also using these art forms as tools for communication, personal growth, and self-expression. Founded in 2001 in response to the lack of arts instruction in public schools, Wingspan Arts’ customized programs have benefited thousands of children across the New York Metro Region. By partnering with professional artist-educators who bring their creative experiences and personalized lessons to the classroom, Wingspan has transformed the traditional teacher-student paradigm into an authenticity-driven, community-based learning environment. Through afterschool, in-school, theatre conservatory, and public programs, Wingspan Arts students are empowered both as individuals and as stewards of the expanding arts community. All children have creative promise; however, many may not have means to access the arts. For these families, Wingspan Arts offers tuition-free opportunities, a scholarship program, and free public events as part of our commitment to reaching as many young people as possible. This helps fulfill our mission of connecting students to the arts, and the arts to life. Want more of My Broadway Memory?!
