Rob Morris is the co-founder and CEO of Koko, whose mission is to combat the youth mental health crisis by meeting young people where they're at—online. Rob's journey with Koko began during his graduate studies at MIT, a period marked by personal struggles with mental health. It was out of this challenging experience that the seeds of Koko were planted.Hailing from the heart of Silicon Valley, Rob's early interests diverged from technology towards a fascination with humanity. This led Rob to delve into psychology during Rob's time at Princeton, a passion that endured even as Rob later developed an interest in computers, design, and technology. Pursuing graduate studies at MIT was a transformative experience, supported by dedicated advisors and inspiring peers who propelled Rob forward despite the challenges. Jesus' famous last words dealt with being known by one's love. What does love have to do with the poor, service, and justice? A lot, it turns out. Love isn't just motivation to do work with and among the marginalized. Love is how we will be recognized as disciples, students of Jesus. On Sunday, we have the privilege of hearing someone who has walked this out in word and deed. Rob Morris, CEO and Co-Founder of Love146, will share his story, the story of his organization which works to eliminate child trafficking, and what love has got to do with it all. You don't want to miss this!- Series Description -Jesus cares deeply about the marginalized. During this Lenten series, we will unpack God's care for the poor, identification with this group, and the ways God moves on their behalf and calls us to do likewise. Oftentimes, we see people talk the talk with justice — saying the right things, using the in season buzzwords — but they are not caring for actual marginalized folks. Other times, we see people serving to the point of burnout and not modeling the world they are working so hard for. They might do good works but without much good news. Jesus is completely different. He has compassion, mercy, and deep love for folks who are marginalized. Jesus sees, stops, and cares, and He calls us to do the same. Will we? Over the Covid-19 pandemic, each our service and justice ministries got shut down — prison bible studies at Whalley and York, serving at Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK), and serving with Agape Church for the Homeless. As the pandemic shifted and more things opened up, we remained quite inward. We want that to change. We are praying that God's work amongst us would inspire a new ministry for and among the poor and marginalized. Join us!
As we've written about repeatedly, efforts to protect kids online and improve their mental health at the moment all seem to be focused on taking social media away from them, even though all the evidence suggests this would be harmful, not helpful. Today, we're joined by Rob Morris, who aims to take a different approach with his online mental health service Koko, for a discussion about how the real way to help kids is to meet them where they're at.

In January, a mental health nonprofit admitted that it had used Artificial Intelligence to help talk to people in distress. Prompted first by a user's longing for personal improvement—and the difficulties involved in that journey—the AI tool generated a reply, which, with human intervention, could be sent verbatim in a chat box, or edited and fine-tuned to better fit the situation. The AI said:“I hear you. You're trying to become a better person and it's not easy. It's hard to make changes in our lives, especially when we're trying to do it alone. But you're not alone. There are people here who care about you and want to help you. I'm proud of you for making the decision to try to improve your life. It takes a lot of courage and strength. I send you love and support as you go through this journey.”This was experimental work from Koko, a mental health nonprofit that integrated the GPT-3 large language model into its product for a short period of time that is now over. In a video demonstration posted on Twitter earlier this year, Koko co-founder Rob Morris revealed that the nonprofit had used AI to provide "mental health support to about 4,000 people" across "about 30,000 messages." Though Koko pulled GPT-3 from its system after a reportedly short period of time, Morris said on Twitter that there are several questions left from the experience. "The implications here are poorly understood," Morris said. "Would people eventually seek emotional support from machines, rather than friends and family?"Today, on the Lock and Code podcast with host David Ruiz, we speak with Courtney Brown, a social services administrator with a history in research and suicidology, to dig into the ethics, feasibility, and potential consequences of relying increasingly on AI tools to help people in distress. For Brown, the immediate implications draw up several concerns. "It disturbed me to see AI using 'I care about you,' or 'I'm concerned,' or 'I'm proud of you.' That made me feel sick to my stomach. And I think it was partially because these are the things that I say, and it's partially because I think that they're going to lose power as a form of connecting to another human."But, importantly, Brown is not the only voice in today's podcast with experience in crisis support. For six years and across 1,000 hours, Ruiz volunteered on his local suicide prevention hotline. He, too, has a background to share. Tune in today as Ruiz and Brown explore the boundaries for deploying AI on people suffering from emotional distress, whether the "support" offered by any AI will be as helpful and genuine as that of a human, and, importantly, whether they are simply afraid of having AI encroach on the most human experiences. After learning I wrote a book, my nephew said he wanted to write one, too. That melted me so of course, I had to have him do the opening to this episode! I don't have kids but they‘ve always been close to my heart. Several years ago I went on a partner trip with Rob Morris of Love146, an organization that helps children rescued from trafficking. Rob is an incredible storyteller and he uses this skill to literally change lives. There are some incredible insights in this interview, and I hope you'll listen with an open mind and heart. To support Love 146: love146.org Through my career, the only times I've ever truly wished for a bigger platform were times I wish I had more money or influence to help causes like Love146. The internet marketing / personal development / coaching space can do a lot better than wax poetic about 7-figure launches, “epic” masterminds, and speaking in front of big crowds. I'm all for entrepreneurs enjoying their success but I would also posit to my colleagues to consider using our platforms to help real world causes that go beyond our bank accounts and lifestyle business. SkyBox Datacenters has had opportunities to grow in the past 2 years and only look to continue that trend moving forward. Rob Morris took some time to sit down and give datacenterHawk an update on how SkyBox has grown since we last caught up with him 2 years ago. Below are some of the topics we dove into during our discussion. Growth in the Houston and Dallas markets Since we last spoke with Rob, SkyBox has continued to expand in both Houston and Dallas. On their Houston campus, they've built several high-density, high power compute projects to bring their facilities to near full capacity. In Dallas, Skybox delivered their last building back in 2018 and decided to watch the market. They kept about 50 acres of land open for a potential build-to-suit opportunity and plan to expand in the market within the next 2-3 years. Opportunity in the midst of the pandemic In March 2020 when Northern America was hit with stay-at-home orders, there was a lot of pain felt throughout the nation. The data center industry is one area that was uniquely put into a position of opportunity and growth. With a vast amount of people suddenly spending more time at home, they turned to the internet to connect with others, which meant more data that needed a data center to live in. Plans for future growth Skybox is planning to expand in 2021, starting with a brand new campus in Elk Grove Village, a high-volume area for data center providers serving the Chicago market. Their first facility, which is currently in shell state, is slated to deliver 190,000 SF and 30 MW once completed in October of 2021. Looking forward We're excited to see where SkyBox will go and the growth that's in store for them moving forward. We'll continue to track them and other data center providers on our platform in 2021 and beyond. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date on the data center industry.
