When it comes to understanding nature, it often seems like the ocean surface - that undulating reflective layer of water - is more like an impenetrable curtain than just a layer of water. There is just so much we don't know about, and are too quick to dismiss, all because we can't easily observe what's going on down there.Thankfully, octopuses are having a renaissance in popular culture, and as a result, serve as sort of an ambassador to the oceans. And this is in no small part due to the efforts of my guests today, Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle.Sy Montgomery is the author of Soul of the Octopus and Secrets of the Octopus, among her many works. And Warren Carlyle is the founder of OctoNation, a nonprofit octopus fan club boasting over a million members, and they have information on and photos and videos of nearly every octopus species on Earth.Today we discuss just how incredible octopuses - and I admit, standard words like amazing and incredible just seem to fall short when describing these creatures. They can contort and fit through tiny holes, change their color and texture in the blink of an eye, they can reason, some can use tools, and they are incredibly strong. They range in size from a kernel of corn to 300 pounds. We cover a range of topics, but we delve deepest into exploring their intelligence. This, coupled with their distinctive lifestyle, physiology, and abilities, often leaves us humans astounded.Sy and Warren had a new book, Secrets of the Octopus, released on March 19 2024, and are contributing to an exciting three part National Geographic TV series coming out on Earth Day 2024.You can find Sy at symontgomery.com, and check out Warren's efforts at octonation.com and @octonation on most social media platforms.Get ready for a jaw-dropping and mind bending discussion about octopuses with Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle.FULL SHOW NOTESLinksBig Eye Jellyhead video ballooning like a parachuteOctoNation (and Octopedia) - Instagram , Facebook, TikToksecretsoftheoctopus.com - The new book!www.symontgomery.comDr. Alex SchnellWarren on Social Media: IGSy on Social Media: IGSupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Gabe Brown, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

In a podcast episode, it was discussed how octopuses possess the remarkable ability to camouflage themselves, not only blending into their surroundings but also assuming alternate identities. For instance, the mimic octopus can imitate various critters, like a flounder, so convincingly that other flounders will chase after it. This showcases the octopus's exceptional skill in adapting its appearance for survival and hunting purposes. Another intriguing behavior highlighted in the episode is octopuses' cooperative hunting with other species, such as fish. Octopuses and fish can form partnerships where the fish signals the octopus to hunt together. The fish may lead the octopus to prey in crevices that the fish cannot reach. This cooperative hunting strategy demonstrates the intelligence and adaptability of octopuses in forming alliances to enhance their hunting success. Additionally, the episode mentioned octopus communities like Octopolis and Octatlantis, challenging the belief that octopuses are solitary creatures. These octocondos and octocities provide insights into the social dynamics and relationships among octopuses, showcasing their complex behaviors beyond solitary existence. Octopuses also possess remarkable abilities like mimicry, where they can imitate other organisms to deceive predators or prey. The Dumbo octopus, mentioned in the episode, is an example of a unique species with distinctive flappy ears, showcasing the diversity of octopus species in the ocean. Overall, the podcast episode emphasizes the intelligence, adaptability, and fascinating behaviors of octopuses, including their camouflage, mimicry, cooperative hunting, and social interactions. These characteristics highlight the complexity and intrigue of octopuses as intelligent and captivating marine creatures. The episode also shares the inspiring story of nine-year-old Heidi Bell, who took action to support ocean conservation after attending a talk about octopuses and sea turtles. Despite the lack of specific charities for octopuses, Heidi used her talents to create octopus-themed jewelry and sea turtle-themed items to raise funds for the New England Aquarium's sea turtle hospital. This initiative showcases how individuals of any age can contribute to marine conservation efforts by leveraging their skills and interests. Heidi's story exemplifies how anyone can play a role in protecting marine life by channeling their creativity and dedication. By crafting items related to ocean creatures, she raised awareness and funds for marine conservation. Furthermore, the importance of contributing to ocean conservation based on one's talents and interests is emphasized. Warren's platform, OctoNation, educates and inspires people about octopuses through various forms of content creation. Sy Montgomery's work as an author and advocate for nature and animals also underscores the significance of using one's passion to raise awareness for marine life. Overall, the episode highlights how individuals like Heidi, Warren, and Sy have made significant contributions to ocean conservation by leveraging their talents and passions. Their stories serve as inspiring examples of how everyone can play a part in protecting marine life through fundraising, education, or creative endeavors. The book "Secrets of the Octopus" by Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle delves into the fascinating world of octopus species, showcasing their diversity and unique characteristics. The authors highlight the awe-inspiring behaviors and abilities of octopuses, such as their intelligence, camouflage skills, and complex social interactions. Through the book, readers are introduced to a wide range of octopus species, each with its own remarkable traits and adaptations. Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle emphasize the importance of appreciating and protecting these incredible creatures. By sharing stories and insights about octopuses, the authors aim to inspire readers to develop a deeper connection with the ocean and its inhabitants. The book serves as a platform to educate and raise awareness about the wonders of octopuses, encouraging readers to see these creatures in a new light and foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for the marine world. Through their collaboration, Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle shed light on the mysteries and marvels of octopuses, showcasing their complex behaviors and interactions. By highlighting the beauty and diversity of octopus species, the book aims to spark curiosity and admiration for these intelligent creatures. "Secrets of the Octopus" serves as a tribute to the incredible world of octopuses, inviting readers to explore and celebrate the wonders of the ocean through the lens of these captivating creatures.

“Being a multi-hyphenate is not a disability – it's an ability. It's an advantage.” Jared Grimes is a Tony Nominated actor currently starring in Funny Girl on Broadway. His effervescent energy lights up the stage every night at The August Wilson Theatre. In this episode, his energy continues into our conversation as we discuss what being a “bag of tricks” in this industry actually means. In this episode, we discover Grimes' road to Broadway, how he turned his ADD diagnosis into multi-hyphenation, inspirations, getting people in power to understand the multi-hyphenate, and we chat about how tap opened up his eyes to the art of multi-hyphenating. “At an early age I began to latch on to the idea that if you're a tap dancer, that means you can be many things. It doesn't mean that you just use your feet to connect with people or share with people. I'm looking at all my heroes and they are singing, they are acting, they are comedians, they're lindyhoppers, they're writers, they're choreographers, they do camerawork – they are behind the camera, in front of the camera – all those guys did that and I was just like wow so that's what it is to be a tap dancer. My earliest idea of what a tap dancer was, was a multi-hyphenate.” Jared Grimes is a quadruple threat in the world of the arts where he is heavily making his mark in singing, dancing, acting, and choreographing. He received a Tony Nomination for his performance in Funny Girl on Broadway, which he is currently starring in. On numerous occasions, he has danced alongside legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, Jerry Lewis and Fayard Nicholas. and also performed for Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy at the Kennedy Center. Most recently on Broadway, Jared could be seen in the Tony Award-winning production of A Soldier's Play. Grimes has toured with Musical legend, Mariah Carey, under the choreography of Marty Kudelka, and danced for artists such as Common, Salt-n-Pepa, Envogue, Busta Rhymes and the Roots. Jared's theater credits include, After Midnight on Broadway directed by Warren Carlyle, Twist directed by Debbie Allen, Babes in Arms at the Goodspeed Opera House choreographed by Randy Skinner, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes directed by John Rando at Encores and Broadway Underground directed by himself. In the world of acting, Jared is known for his recurring role of ‘Adrian' on NBC's hit show “Manifest.” He performed the lead role of ‘Jackson' in the Annapurna feature film Swing Kids and Sammy Davis Jr.'s “Birth of the Blues” on Michael Feinstein's American Songbook for PBS. Other film credits include Paramount's, The Marc Pease Experience starring Ben Stiller, New Line Cinema's Little Manhattan and Elevation Filmwork's' First Born starring Elizabeth Shue. Grimes has appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola, Subway, MTV and television shows such as CBS' “Star Search,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” ABC Family's “Dance Fever” and “The Jerry Lewis Telethon.” Learn more about your ad choices. “The story of Jazz Dance is the story of America.” My guests today are the creators of the acclaimed new film documentary: Uprooted – The Journey of Jazz Dance, which has been winning awards at film festivals around the world, and in the US can currently be seen on HBO Max. All three of the film's creators are from the UK, they all have extensive training and backgrounds in dance, and with this movie they are all making their feature length film debuts. The film's director is Khadifa Wong who trained as a dancer and actress but became frustrated by the lack of opportunities for performers of color, and then realized that her true passion lay behind the camera. Producer, Lisa Donmall-Reeve, migrated to film following a very successful twenty year career as a performer that included playing many leading roles on London's West End. And dancer, choreographer and educator, Zak Nemorin - who conceived the film - has appeared in seventeen West End musicals and is the Head of Jazz Dance at Millennium Performing Arts in London. To create the film they interviewed 70 experts - dancers, choreographers, educators and historians - regarding the history of Jazz dance as well as the evolution of its many roots and branches, including Debbie Allen, Josh Bergasse, Al Blackstone, Andy Blankenbuehler, Bob Boross, Camile Brown, Warren Carlyle, Graciela Danielle, George Faison, Thomas De Frantz, Karen Hubbard, Saleemah Knight, Bonnie Langford, Martine Mattox, Jerry Mitchell, Mandy Moore, Walter Painter, Travis Payne, Arlene Phillips, Chita Rivera, Susan Stroman, and Chet Walker to name only a few. Along the way they explore where Jazz dance originated and how it became the dance language of Broadway. I highly recommend it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and Social Mediology founder Kate vanderVoort chats with Warren Carlyle, founder and CEO of OctoNation, the world’s largest octopus fan club, and not for profit organization that inspires conservation of the ocean by teaching the world about octopuses. He is also the co-founder of the Community Leaders Association and is a community building strategist who works with purpose driven brands and influencers to build highly engaged online communities. About Warren Warren and his communities have been featured and gotten the attention of celebrities and global organizations such as Michael B. Jordan, Ellen DeGeneres, Joe Rogan, Facebook HQ, and more. Warren believes online communities are the lifeblood of brand, a brand relevancy in today's crowded digital marketplace. He likes seeing people able to live their dreams, live their passion, create communities around the things that they love. When he sees people winning at the thing that they are truly passionate about, it makes him think that the world becomes a better place as they are talking and acting on something that lights them up. After the terrible news of his mother passing away, Warren decided to find an internship in New York, to start a new life and career. It was this move that taught him the advantages of social media and the power of communities. After working for a several months with a celebrity fashion photographer, he decided to create the largest octopus fan club, because it was an interest of his that he was truly passionate about. BIG IDEA 1 “Inspires kids and adults to look towards the ocean as something that deserves to be protected.” (11:59) Since Warren was a kid, he been obsessed with octopuses and wanted to learn more about them. After some research he found that octopuses were highly misrepresented, mischaracterized and demonized within the literature. He thought nobody has thought to story tell about how magnificent these ancient creatures are. So, he decided to create OctoNation, a community of people who can follow their love for octopuses. One of their campaigns is called “Interview with an Octopus”, where they go to aquariums all over the world and interview the octopus keeper, asking them questions on Facebook Live or Instagram live. Warren expresses how it is a great way to connect with somebody with a vast amount of knowledge on the topic. BIG IDEA 2 “Not everybody belongs in your community.” (30:45) The seven C’s of building a fanatical community are: clarify, core value, content, collaboration, connection, conversation and consistency. When you are clear on those core values, it contributes to the moderation job and people will self-select and opt out if the community is not the right place for them. Warren strives to have a zero-tolerance policy for those that misuse or abuse social media. For community creators and managers there's so much more education now around trolling and abuse on social media. We also need to understand and accept that not everybody is a fit for your community. The content you create is how you are deserving of your community's attention on a daily basis. Your content needs to show evidence of your core values. BIG IDEA 3 “When I reach out to a brand, I really want to foster a relationship at the highest level!” (38:58) Warren explains that the biggest issue that most community leaders face, or aspiring community leaders is confidence. The more confidence and belief in yourself as a community leader, the more you can express the core values of your mission or vision. By connecting with the highest levels within the industry you begin to provide the highest value to your community, making it bigger than yourself and motivating those within it. Warren Carlyle (Kiss Me Kate) is a British director and choreographer, nominated this season for Best Choreography. He received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Director of a Musical for the 2009 revival of Finian's Rainbow. Carlyle most recently directed and choreographed the Broadway musical After Midnight, Chaplin and Hugh Jackman: Back On Broadway; Choreographed On The 20th Century, The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, and the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies. Warren is a big part of the Tony race this season (and my money is on him), but he still took time out of his busy rehearsal and cocktail party schedule to sit down with me and talk about: How he was a real-life Billy Elliot and why his Mum got him started on his journey. What made him hang up his dance belt and turn to a life of choreography. The process of creating a number . . . and how he knows when it is working and when it isn’t . . . . How he got “Too Darn Hot” from an 8 to a 10! What it’s like working with stars like Hugh Jackman and Bette Midler. An iconic moment in American history is the subject of a new Broadway revue at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. After Midnight purports to take its audience to a Jazz Age Harlem nightclub. It was a time and place in which America’s new music, jazz, was burgeoning. Conceived by Jack Viertel, and directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, this new show pays homage to the Cotton Club and other Harlem hotpots that had their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. The show features more than 25 songs from the era, with an emphasis on both compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington. The production features the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino in the role of Special Guest Star, and actor Dulé Hill as The Host. The producers plan to keep this show around, too. They’ve booked pop singer K.D. Lang to replace Barrino this coming February, and a double bill of R&B singers Babyface and Toni Braxton to follow Lang in mid-March. With a cast of more than 40, including the band, this is a high-wattage production. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know if all that 20th century juice can light up Broadway almost 90 years later.
