LOOKOUT! A much-anticipated day has finally arrived, as Patti Murin joins us for Episode 87! Murin made her Broadway debut in one of our favorite shows of all time in Xanadu, and then went on to star in Lysistrata Jones, as well as the touring production of Wicked. She's also done a great deal of work on-screen including a recurring role on Chicago Med, and had starring roles in the Hallmark classics Holiday for Heroes and Love on Iceland. Of course, she's best known to the Broadway world for her most recent performance in Frozen when she starred as Anna, earning both Drama League and Outer Critic Circle Award nominations in the process. A proud New Yorker, Murin steps into The Batter's Box to discuss her long-time love of the New York Yankees. Whether it was their triumphs in the 2000 World Series against the Mets or the heartbreak endured during the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox, Murin's relationship with the Pinstripes is marked by tremendous passion and spans all the peaks and valleys. She even has a specific code of ethics when it comes to following the team, and reveals some little-known facts about her sports fandom in general. In a conversation that truly covered all bases, we also discussed her biggest grand slams here on Broadway, the John Stamos-Beach Boys connection, and even played a fun round of Baseball meets Broadway trivia in this week's edition of The 7th Inning Stretch! My heart filled up like a pinata when I sat down for this chat. Alex Wyse is a good friend, and sure, we love him for his theatre performances in shows such as off-Broadway's "Triassic Parq" and Broadway shows such as "Lysistrata Jones" and Deaf West's revival of "Spring Awakening" but I bet you'd never guess that his grandmother was responsible for some of today's most popular advertising slogans? We are all hip to the fact that Alex and Wes Taylor co-created and star in the ground-breaking, Emmy nominated comedy called "The Indoor Boys" but did you know that Andrew Kober was the Mr. Bumble to his Oliver back in Ohio??? Not only is he an amazing writer, actor, and Tony nominated producer, he is a tremendous musician and singer and you can even here Alex sing my song "Right Here" from my album I COULD USE A DRINK! I met Alex Wyse 3 or 4 years ago after an event and we became quick friends. Aside from being hilarious, he has such a wealth of experience and the perspective he's gained from all the work he's done is so informative and, I think, helpful for anyone who's trying to figure out how to navigate a career in entertainment. He's worked on and off-broadway, in television, film, as a producer and most recently he and his writing partner, Wesley Taylor, released the third season of their award winning web series INDOOR BOYS. I thought this would be a perfect time to sit down and reflect with Alex on where he's at. He was pretty insistent with me that this not be a rundown of his resume, which I was thrilled to hear. I wasn't quite sure where the conversation would take us, but we found ourselves talking about self-worth, the definition of success, creating your own path, mothers and sons, and much much more. Wether you know Alex or not, I think you're really going to come to appreciate what's he's got to share. On television, Wyse has appeared in multiple roles since 2010 including Bored to Death, Switched at Birth, The Bold and the Beautiful, Marvel's Iron Fist, and Masters of Sex. On film, he appeared opposite America Ferrera in X/Y. With Wesley Taylor, he co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in the web series Indoor Boys. To date, it has been nominated for eighteen Indie Series Awards and won six, including Best Web Series – Comedy, Best Writing – Comedy, and Best Lead Actor – Comedy for Wyse. In theater, he performed in various regional productions before making his Broadway debut in Lysistrata Jones, which ran at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 2011 to 2012. Also on Broadway, he played schoolboy Georg Zirschnitz in the Deaf West Theatre's production of Spring Awakening, and in 2018, he joined the musical Waitress, as Ogie. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in Lysistrata Jones, Triassic Parq, Bare, and Ride the Cyclone. In 2013–2014, he toured with the national company of Wicked, playing the role of Boq. And in 2015, he appeared opposite Evan Rachel Wood and Rumer Willis in For the Record: Dear John Hughes in Los Angeles. He also co-produced the Broadway transfer of Heidi Schreck's play What the Constitution Means to Me, which opened at the Helen Hayes Theater on March 31, 2019. The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. The myth of "making it" tells us that our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on a specific outcome when the truth is that there is no moment of arrival - the journey is never ending. This podcast will serve as an archive of individual perspectives and a source of inspiration for anyone navigating their own creative path. It's an opportunity to reflect on where we've been, where we're at, and where we're going. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, listen in on a fun little coffee date between Ophelia's Artistic Director and Lysistrata Jones director Billie Aken-Tyers and Zach as they have a heart-to-heart about what it means to create work, how to connect with their collaborators and friends, and why it is that we're even doing what we do in the first place. Actually, that sounds a little heavy. They talk about how Billie is secretly stealing everyone's heart to keep her young forever. There - that's a way more interesting description. Lysistrata Jones runs at the Ophelia Theatre March 16th through April 8th. Tickets for the show can be found at our website at opheliatheatre.com. Your Alice runs at the Brooklyn Academy of Music May 23rd through the 27th. Tickets will be available soon. Joining Zach on the podcast this week is Lysistrata Jones actor Jason Hurtado ('Uardo). The pair talk about their time working together in the service industry, the musicals, video games and cartoons that shaped their lives, and gush just a little bit too long about director Billie Aken-Tyers for it to seem like she is not paying them to say nice things about her. Lysistrata Jones opens March 16th, 2018. Tickets for the show can be found at our website at opheliatheatre.com. It's our first episode on Lysistrata Jones! This week, Billie-Aken Tyers joins Zach in interviewing the show's Composer and Lyricist Lewis Flinn. We discuss the show's long production history, it's origins as a screenplay for a Movie Musical, and what inspired the show's diverse and frantic score (slam poetry, anyone?). Thank you to Freen in Green for the use of our theme song "Welcome to Enjoy (Instrumental)" off their album Green Planet Adventures. Keep up with their amazing music at freeningreen.bandcamp.com. The very funny Alex Wyse (Spring Awakening, Lysistrata Jones, Masters of Sex) talks to Rory about his beautiful experience in Spring Awakening from LA to Broadway. He didn't expect to be on Broadway when he was in high school. He had such low expectations for himself, his college application essay was entitled "Preparing to be Homeless!" Alex, a self described "neurotic jew", shares his survival guide for auditioning and avoiding self sabotage with humor and gratitude.

Directing and Choreographing New Musicals: Dan Knechtges: At its 2013 Emerging Artist Symposium on Musicals, SDCF hosted Tony nominated Dan Knechtges (Lysistrata Jones, Xanadu, Spelling Bee) in conversation with Producing Director Ellen Rusconi on his experiences directing and choreographing musicals from the classics to more contemporary works. From his theatre experiences while growing up in Cleveland to his transition from performer to the other side of the table, this discussion - peppered with a dash of humor, sentiment, and survival jobs - examines Dan's process of learning to create musical theatre and launching a career. Listen in as he shares his techniques of choreographic patterning and sustaining creativity and control in the rehearsal room and provides sound advice on ways to feed and enrich craft. The conversation explores key tactics in working with stage managers and writers, time management when developing a new work, and elevating taste in the most unlikely, yet scrumptious of ways. Originally recorded - June 1, 2013 Running Time - 59:19 © 2013 SDCF
