Ryan and Becca jump into a topic for those out there wondering when they should consider selling, especially beginner potters. We both took a long time to start selling our work on a regular basis, but that's not the same timeline for everyone. Ryan & Becca answer lots of questions from our buddy Andrew Linderman (@lindermanpottery) about scouting a new studio space and effectively moving from your current studio. There are many considerations when looking at potential studio spaces: square footage, flooring, ease of moving in and out of the studio, lighting, water access, electrical access, and equipment placement. There are plenty of other things to consider once the must haves are taken care of first. Packing and moving everything is a huge undertaking as well that has to be done, but it gives you a chance to get rid of lots of junk. They go into lots of specifics about their own kiln loading and firings. Stick around long enough to hear a good bickering session about kiln logging.Resourceshttps://digitalfire.com/glossary/vitrificationListener QuestionsOn this episode:- My community studio uses standard 181 stoneware which is labeled as a cone 6-10 firing body. Our kilns glaze fire to cone 6. Through researching this topic on my own, I've come across some potters who say that clay isn't vitrified (and not food safe) until it's fired to its maximum temperature. If that's true, it seems weird that commercial clay manufacturers don't make that distinction in the descriptions of the clay's characteristics though. I've found a lot of mixed and confusing information about this subject online, so I wanted to get your take on it! @willowandvessel- Right now all my glazing stuff is in our garage that's not insulated. I'm holding out as long as I can, but I was curious what would happen if my glaze froze? After it thawed do you think there would be any issues or changes to it? We hope you enjoy another short episode and it helps those of you selling at shows these days.Resources:#86 - Art show Q&A (pt 1)#87 - Art show Q&A (pt 2)Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- I have a question about shows. I sell primarily online driving traffic to my Etsy but I'd like to some shows this year too. Any advice on how to find shows in your area and how to apply? I know of some shows locally but have a hard time finding a point of contact to apply. Some have terribly outdated websites with no information on how to become a vendor. Any advice on finding and applying to non-juried shows would be great. @mudgrovepottery- You have done several shown on setting up and what to take to an Art Show. What about how much stuff you take. IE Bowls, bottles, cups etc. @curlytailstudio- How many pieces do you bring to a vendor show? @batsceramics- What's the best-selling piece that you should offer at markets besides mugs? I've recently made ramen bowls (tall and deep bowls with slots for the chop sticks) that have sold almost instantly at the last couple of markets. Do you guys have pieces that instantly sell? @jessleepottery- How do you deal with other vendors at shows/markets who want to trade merch? Esp when you don't want what they're peddling
Ryan and Becca answer some more listener questions about art shows. This week we cover how much work you should take to a show to have ample inventory, what items sell well besides mugs, & a final inquiry about how you deal with other vendors who wants to trade work. We hope you enjoy another short episode and it helps those of you selling at shows these days.Resources:#86 - Art show Q&A (pt 1)#87 - Art show Q&A (pt 2)Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- I have a question about shows. Ryan and Becca get into the finance side of selling mugs of different styles: 'basic' production mugs and 'fancy' detailed mugs. We breakdown the time to produce, opportunity to experiment, how to manage your inventory effectively, and what other variables should be considered as you grow your customer base. We are pretty used to producing 'basic' work in high quantity over 'fancy' work in low quantity, but we get a little help from some friends as we chat. Enjoy and let us know how you prefer to structure your making cycles for enjoyment & good for your business also.Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- Do you think it's more profitable to be a production potter and have a sale of 40-80 mugs at one time for a smaller price or a potter who puts a lot of intricate details on pieces and only sells 10 or 15 mugs at a time for a higher price? -@jessleepottery Send us questions so we can answer anything you've been thinking about on a future episode. Ryan & Becca look back as they hit the 2 year anniversary of hosting Wheel Talk. A lot of things have progressed since we first started, we've covered so many topics over the past 100+ episodes, and have spent time interviewing some great peers inside & outside of clay.Thank you all so much for listening & letting us join you in your studios on a weekly basis. We are very grateful for all of the shout outs, questions you send us, comments, reviews, and so much more from everyone who is part of our community. We hope you all have gotten as much out of this as we have and you choose to stick around for the next 2 years & beyond!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- How do you guys feel about having unglazed clay for parts of pottery that come in contact with food? Ryan & Becca recap their weekend after returning from the Berea Craft Festival and answer a listener question. A listener has a good question about how they should go about raising their prices. Pricing is always a tough task but having confidence in whatever you decide is the best advice we could give you. Good luck out there!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- I need to up my prices due to the price of clay, shipping (I'm in Canada), buying quality tools to make the process easier, etc but I have a hard time trying to figure out how/when. Should I give advance warning? If so, how much? How high is too high? ( I sell my beachy mugs for $30 and literally can't keep them in stock) Should I make a post explaining on my IG and FB? I'm thinking of going up to $35 but don't want to insult anyone, or make it too high etc. I feel guilty asking for more... Ryan & Becca break down what makes a great show after Ryan gets back from his 2 day show in Louisville, KY. A number of factors are accounted for when determining whether you may want to participate in a show for the first time or return in the future. Ryan and Becca are trying out a shorter episode today to answer a listener question in depth about the profit potential between various items. There are many factors that go into pricing your work and just because you have a larger form doesn't mean it has to be less profitable. Supply and demand play a big factor as well when you're deciding how to price your work appropriately for the market willing to buy it. We hope you enjoy this new 30 minute format that will be released on occasion.Get a FREE Sticker!Submit a review on your platform of choice, screenshot it, and send to us on Instagram (@wheeltalkpodcast) or email (wheeltalkpodcast@gmail.com) with your shipping address.
