The gaming industry loves reboots, remakes, redos—any so-called classic from the past that can generate some easy cash. But though these rereleases supposedly honor what came before, they often do the opposite, serving only to obscure all memory of the originals. It's a rewriting of history, essentially, with the original development teams, scripts, art, and musical scores all lost in the wake of a remake that only serves itself. The recent Lunar Remastered Collection epitomizes this problem, showing just how, under the pretense of preservation, these remakes don't elevate their forbears...they erase them. Please visit lostnostalgia.com for more insightful news and musings into everything obscure, weird, and wistfully vintage! Thanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune!
It's a dead man's party. That's what podcasts are called on Lunar, where we're realizing no underclass exists in Meribia, understanding Mel only trusts beastmen with weapons, verifying interspecies erotica, debating ho ho ho vs bwa ha ha, fist fighting a Hero, slandering lawyers and accountants, cringing at crushing on Jessica, locking tighter than a tenement in South Central, leaving a dent in your skull, slipping on drool, becoming victimized, getting son'd by Mel, dealing with The Guild of Brett, pushing buttons to make bridges, slaying a dragon, and having no doubt that she is the one. You kids are wack. And our hearts are content as we're wondering if Mel took Meribia by force, placating the masses, lying to children, having a big dream, entering Dross negotiations, partying till we puke, knowing dragons are real, practicing swordsmanship, seeing our shoes under her bed, inventing meteorology, foreshadowing the necessity of magic, gender coding Luna to clean things, freaking out over a wig, and meeting a an ominous fortune teller. Get up, stumblebut, we got jerkin' off to do. Nope, sorry, wrong podcast. On this one we're kink shaming a flying cat, valuing experiences over possessions, sleeping on a cot, marveling at the Meribian metropolis, questioning if turds are monsters or monsters are turds, wondering if Meribia is under mob rule, using a traveler's cheque, role-playing with some kiddos, discovering a deliberate typo, citing inspiration from Playboy, and protecting every man's right to be drunk and sexist. The music just fit so well, and the fight was fantastic. Lunar: Eternal Blue is a role-playing video game developed by Game Arts and Studio Alex for the Sega CD as the sequel to Lunar: The Silver Star. The game was originally released in December 1994 in Japan, and later in North America in September 1995 by Working Designs. Eternal Blue expanded the story and gameplay of its predecessor, and made more use of the Sega CD's hardware, including more detailed graphics, longer, more elaborate animated cutscenes, and more extensive use of voice acting. Critics were mostly pleased with the title, giving particular merit to the game's English translation and further expansion of the role-playing game genre in CD format. Set one thousand years after the events of The Silver Star, the game follows the adventure of Hiro, a young explorer and adventurer who meets Lucia, visitor from the far-away Blue Star, becoming entangled in her mission to stop Zophar, an evil, all-powerful being, from destroying the world. During their journey across the world of Lunar, Hiro and Lucia are joined by an ever-expanding cast of supporting characters, including some from its predecessor. Eternal Blue was remade in 1998 as Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete published by Kadokawa Shoten and Entertainment Software Publishing.

Another Patron-requested topic approaches! This week, Kat and Nadia take on a very special request to talk about the semi-lost "in between" era of CD JRPGs. If you're an old person, you'll know all about said era: It was an awkward but interesting time when some 16-bit consoles received CD player add-ons. A host of one-of-a-kind RPGs followed from series like Lunar, Ys, and more. It was a time when 16-color anime cutscenes were king, and localization company Working Designs made sure not to skimp on the Bill Clinton jokes. Get your slap bracelets ready. Special thanks to $50 Patron Visa-Valtteri Pimiä for both their generous support and the great idea! Also in this episode: Monster Hunter Rise gets a Rathalos-sized update, Pokemon Snap seems lovely, Returnal is perfectly spooky, and Shin Megami Tensei 3's Matador seems really wild about Hanukkah.
Lunar: The Silver Star (ルナ ザ・シルバースター, Runa Za Shirubā Sutā) is a role-playing video game developed by Game Arts and Studio Alex for the Sega/Mega-CD, originally published by Game Arts and released in Japan in 1992. After a successful release, the game was translated and localized by Working Designs for release in North America the following year. Designed as a "different kind of RPG", Lunar: The Silver Star made use of the up-and-coming CD-ROM format by featuring high quality audio, full motion video, and voice acting to narrate a fantasy story set in a magical world. The game centers on the exploits of Alex, a young boy from a small town who dreams of one day becoming a great hero like his idol, Dragonmaster Dyne. When a childish adventure later turns to discovering an ancient dragon, Alex and his friends must journey across the world to gather the necessary power to become the next Dragonmaster, and save the world in the process.

This week Fred and Jam are discussing the publisher Working Designs, best known for bringing many non-traditional Japanese titles over to the West complete with heavy localization. Thanks in part to president Victor Ireland, Working Designs is responsible for key titles in the libraries of the Turbografx-16 (and CD), Sega CD, Saturn, Playstation, and Playstation 2.
This time on Backloggers, I'm joined by two new guests, Chris and Jamie, to discuss our second retro game, the Playstation classic Alundra. On the block for discussion are some of the other games in the "Stalker" franchise (it's not what you think!) Working Designs legacy and our relative histories with their titles, and our familiarity with similar games, like the Zelda franchise. So, not gonna lie, this game doesn't always play fair like we discuss on the show, so if you've decided to play along, be prepared. We've decided this will be a two part show, so we'll see you in a few weeks. Have fun!
