The resurrection of the genius is chapter 3 of Terranigma. Genius can mean several things, and we go with more of the old Greek reading of that word. Chapter 3 is the longest and most fun chapter of the game. Also, a heads up, Casen's jaw was giving him all sorts of trouble so if he's stretching it out a lot, mercilessly tease him in the comments. These two, who grew up on opposite sides of the Sega/Nintendo divide, embark on a thrilling journey through the gaming landscape. Together, they challenge each other to revisit and play the gems they missed in the gaming golden days. The SNES RPG library is the stuff of legend, so it's easy for the lesser known games to slip through the cracks. Lufia II is one of those titles, and I'm here to tell you it's a game worth exploring said crack for. I'd never played, or heard of it, before this episode, but it's like a standard Final Fantasy RPG meets The Legend of Zelda. You fight battles in classic turn-based RPG combat, but outside of that you solve puzzles and blow up walls like you would in A Link to the Past. I don't love RPGs, but this one hooked me.  I have two guests this week. Long-time hot dog, Jnasty, sponsored this episode and got me playing Lufia II in the first place, so he swings by to explain why he's so hot for Sinistrals. And then our power hungry Discord mod, Captain N, gives me a shout to take a deep dive into feeding monsters shields whilee navigating the glitchiest dungeon to ever glitch (it'll all make sense after you listen). And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone calls for an end to micro-transactions. Will I ever review Cyberpunk 2077? And is Mario 64 a horror game??? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Welcome to 2024! This year at Random Encounter, we're on the road to episode 300, so let's start the new year right by chatting about some games!First up, Jerry is here to talk about the experimental visual novel, Slay the Princess. In complete opposition to just about every video game plot ever, here you need to kill the princess or the world is doomed! Or is it? With a ton of endings and twists around every choice, Slay the Princess has captured Jerry's attention as a potentially overlooked gem of 2023.And speaking of overlooked gems, Aleks has another one for you from 1999 with Planet Laika, a Japanese-only game from Quintet, the developer of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. This lost 32-bit-era adventure/RPG hybrid features a highly experimental narrative, mind-bending graphics, and a philosophical bent that would have sent any translator in the late 1990s into a stress-related leave (which might be why it was never localized). Thankfully, Planet Laika now has a high-quality fan translation! There are always those games that come out in a different land that you hear about and wonder what it would be like to play them, you ponder what it would be like but never get around to it.  Terranigma is one of those lost SNES games for me.  This week I finally changed that and dug into this action RPG. Starring Mike Albertin, Richard Sampson, Vincent Goodwin, Blake Anglin, and Kyle.

The world is waiting to be reborn, and it's waiting for you. Terranigma is probably Quintet's grandest statement on its pet themes... an action RPG that purports to be about the duality of creation and destruction. Over the course of a playthrough you raise the continents, restore the wildlife, bring humanity to its highest peak, and break the cycle of fate to stop its ultimate destruction. Is the game perfect? Not hardly. But it's got a unique tone and it improves on its predecessors' combat enough to make it one of the best SNES games out there. Big thanks to Hello for executive producing this episode, and happy birthday to Séan!

"No light without shadow, no shadow without light." - Terranigma In diesem Sinne, viel Spaß mit 'JRPGs (Interlude 14)'!´ Euer Eskapist, Daniel (und Markus, Lukas, Melanie, Denny und Sascha im Geiste).
