Send us a textHiring a stylist is hard. Retaining one is harder. Training them from scratch? That's where most salon owners throw in the towel. Todd and Jen believe that's exactly where the opportunity lies.In this episode, they break down their education funnel—the system they've built to train new hires (especially those straight out of cosmetology school) into fully booked, confident, high-performing stylists. From blow-dry assessments to client-ready test-outs, you'll hear exactly how they do it, how long it takes, and how it leads to stronger retention, higher performance, and long-term growth.Whether you're thinking about training your first stylist or looking to improve the education model inside your salon, this episode will help you build a path that scales with your business and supports your team.Key Topics Covered:[00:00] Stop Waiting for the “Unicorn” Hire [00:02] Jen's Story: Learning the Hard Way at Her First Salon [00:04] Daydreaming Won't Save Your Business—Systems Will [00:05] Todd's Opening Rant: $80 Haircuts, Facebook Negativity, and a Dying Industry Mindset [00:12] Stop Asking Facebook What a Lawyer or Accountant Should Answer [00:14] Building an Education Funnel [00:16] Going Wider Reduces Risk and Builds Retention [00:17] Why We Focus on Hiring Stylists Out of School [00:19] How a True Apprenticeship Works (And What States Offer It) [00:20] Are You a “Push Forward” or “Hold Back” Type Leader? Systems do.Stop outsourcing business decisions to Facebook. Talk to professionals.Create wins early and often. Your education system should evolve. The gaming industry loves reboots, remakes, redos—any so-called classic from the past that can generate some easy cash. But though these rereleases supposedly honor what came before, they often do the opposite, serving only to obscure all memory of the originals. It's a rewriting of history, essentially, with the original development teams, scripts, art, and musical scores all lost in the wake of a remake that only serves itself. The recent Lunar Remastered Collection epitomizes this problem, showing just how, under the pretense of preservation, these remakes don't elevate their forbears...they erase them. Please visit lostnostalgia.com for more insightful news and musings into everything obscure, weird, and wistfully vintage! Thanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune!

Sheil and Ben get together to share their reactions to the Chargers' convincing win over the Jets on ‘MNF.' Next, Ben rethinks his early position on C.J. Stroud, and Sheil holds out just a little more hope for the Packers in a bleak NFC landscape (33:04). Developers ignore security issues. But can we really blame them? After all, security folks bombard them with an endless stream of issues that need to be addressed with no way for them to separate what's actually critical from all the noise, all while they are expected to release software more frequently and faster than ever before. This episode is a "re-do" of sorts in itself in that it covers what should have been covered in Episode 1. It defines a Humble Beginning to introduce listeners to the central theme of the podcast and lays the foundation for exploration in future episodes of the Christian life and path of Christian transformation. The perils of pride-led living are contrasted with humbly beginning on a new course aligned with God. The nature of and need for these spiritual course corrections on our journey are covered as well as their tendency to present themselves often.

In today's episode, we have a question from a listener! Anna asks about the challenges that come from giving students “redos” on their work. Specifically, she asks about the balance of some students needing multiple opportunities to succeed, while others take advantage of being able to do low-quality work on the first attempt, knowing they will have the opportunity to “fix it” later. We discuss the habits of mind needed to make redos work well, what it means to be people of both grace and truth, and our own experiences with making some learning activities lower stakes for our students by offering multiple attempts in learning. Along the way, Dave mentions and article by Rick Wormeli entitled “Redos and Retakes Done Right,” which you can access here: https://www.newenglandssc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Redos-and-Retakes-Done-Right-Rick-Wormeli-1.pdf

Which happens to be the last time she felt sparks from her career aspirations and her love life.
