The race for governor, congressional seats and offices at the state and local level are now set; we have a look ahead to the November election. Also: a criminal trial tied to the YDC abuse scandal ends with a hung jury- and new reporting from NHPR reveals one of the witnesses who testified is himself accused of abuse. NHPR's Josh Rogers and Jason Moon report.
In the U.S., many kids in trouble with the law are sentenced to juvenile detention facilities. In New Hampshire, the largest such facility is a place commonly known as the Youth Detention Center, or YDC (recently renamed the Sununu Youth Services Center). YDC was founded with good intentions: keep kids out of adult jails and prisons and care for them. But now, nearly 1,300 former residents of YDC have come forward, filing lawsuits over alleged abuse at the facility. The allegations include hundreds of cases of assault and rape that span over six decades. It's become one of the biggest youth detention scandals in American history.New Hampshire Public Radio's Jason Moon and his colleagues on the Document team spent the last year investigating the Youth Development Center. They combed through the cases, worked around legal roadblocks, and spoke with residents and staff who'd never before told their stories. This week on The Sunday Story, host Ayesha Roscoe and Moon discuss what may have happened inside YDC and how the allegations stayed under wraps for so long.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
For more than a century, New Hampshire sent its troubled youth to the same juvenile jail. It was called the Youth Development Center, or YDC. The young people were supposed to be cared for and then live productive lives. Instead, many of them were physically and sexually abused. More than a thousand people have said that the adults in charge at the YDC abused them. A statewide settlement fund established by NH lawmakers has so far paid out over $95 million to settle lawsuits filed by former detainees.Jason Moon is a senior reporter and producer on the Document Team at NHPR. Moon's investigation into the abuse at the YDC is now a three-part investigative podcast called “Youth Development Center.”Moon's other work includes “Bear Brook,” an investigative podcast into a brutal murder in New Hampshire that has been downloaded more than 31 million times. He also contributed reporting and music to The 13th Step, an NHPR podcast about abuse in New Hampshire's addiction recovery centers which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the prestigious duPont-Columbia Award.Moon said of his investigation into the Youth Development Center, “A lot of these kids didn't necessarily have very strong advocates for them at home coming to try to find out what they could. So you have that enormous power dynamic, you have the secrecy that's built into the system, where really the only information that can make it out of the system is written by the adults in charge. They write all the reports, they have complete control over the narrative that makes it out of the building, and if anything does make it out of the building that they don't like, there's an easy kind of response to it, which is ‘these kids they lie, they manipulate, that's why they're here.'”“I would hope that all of us reflect on in the wake of a situation like this the extent to which we as a society sort of buy that argument,” Moon said.
For three decades, Andy Perkins didn't talk about what happened to him at a place called YDC – the Youth Development Center. Then, he saw something on the news, and he realized he wasn't the only person with a story about YDC. Andy gives us a rare glimpse into the black box of the juvenile justice system. Karen Lemoine didn't arrive at YDC looking to start trouble. But the red flags she saw were hard to ignore, especially when it came to one kid in particular. In 2015, 193 member countries of the United Nations agreed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's), to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs are meant to be a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity by improving health and education, reducing inequality, and spurring economic growth – all while tackling climate change and preserving our environment. Now that it's 2023, the clock is ticking, and the road to 2030 is at its halfway point. That raises the question: are these goals still within reach? Or is this an impossible dream? A Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) delegation comprising of four Canadian youth made it their mission to answer this question when they attended the annual High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, which is the central UN platform for the follow-up and review of the SDGs. In just a moment, you will hear from these YDC delegates as they chat about where Canada's progress is with the 2030 SDGs, what it's like to participate in a UN conference of this magnitude, and some of the key trends to look out for as the clock to 2030 counts down.

The Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) provided five Canadian youth from across the country with the opportunity to attend the World Bank/International Monetary Fund (WB/IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington DC. This podcast provides a behind the scenes look into the exciting meetings they held with stakeholders, the eye opening sessions they attended around key topics in development and the personal and professional growth they experienced. Three key themes were developed by the delegation to guide discussions and advocacy activities at the meetings: inclusive economic growth; FinTech and innovative technologies; and open governance. The delegation had the opportunity to participate in a panel in collaboration with Global Voices, an Australian organization with a very similar mandate to YDC, to talk about the future of work. They also met with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to discuss their current efforts to bypass barriers to development such as lack of infrastructure to provide marginalized and isolated populations with access to their basic needs. The delegation also had the opportunity to meet with the Canadian ambassadors to the IMF, World Bank and the Organization of American States to gain insights into their experiences and thoughts on how Canada leverages multilateral partnerships to promote peace, exchange of knowledge and sustainability. It was an exciting week filled with great discussions, sightseeing and food!

On this episode of the podcast, we welcome Chuck Yates. Chuck and I met a few months ago, first via phone and then over a great Houston lunch. I like Chuck a lot. He is thoughtful, insightful, caring and has a unique flair which he brings to everything he does (and wears). The first time I heard of him was because of the charity roast he spearheaded and I heard about “this PE guy getting a tattoo on his backside”. We start the pod with that story, and his passion for charity and we move through the business model of oil and gas, what he sees for the future and his best advice for investors. I enjoyed the conversation and I’m sure you will too. #hottakeoftheday podcast Episode 98 w/Chuck Yates https://youtu.be/0YyyQ2-e_gk Podcast Audio About our Sponsor: Magnum Cementing Services Magnum Cementing Services is an established well cementing service company with a broad operational footprint in North America. After graduating magna cum laude, laude daude we like to party from Rice University with a BA in Political Science, an MBA in finance and plenty of BS, he toured with the Rolling Stones during one of Bill Wyman's stays in rehab. He later ran product design for Apple where Steve Jobs proclaimed him so valuable that "if Chuck left I'd be reduced to wearing nothing but black turtlenecks all the time". Chuck joined the Houston office of Stephens Inc., the Little Rock Arkansas investment bank where he strove to do well but not well enough to get promoted to Little Rock. After figuring out he was a really crappy investment banker, he moved to the principal side of the business... where he fared not much better. But as anyone who has spent more than thirty seconds with Chuck knows, he did the Silverhill deal. Interestingly enough during his nearly twenty years in private equity his business partner Mike Heinz went entirely gray. Coincidence? I think not. Chuck once won a bet from Superman where the loser had to wear his underwear on the outside of his clothes. Despite all of these achievements, in the post-COVID spring of 2020, Chuck was shit-canned from his gig as Managing Partner. Inclusive Economic Growth, Innovative Technologies and Open GovernanceThe Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) provided five Canadian youth from across the country with the opportunity to attend the World Bank/International Monetary Fund (WB/IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington DC.
