In this powerful episode of WAIT. HOLD UP...WHAT?, host Dawne Hanks sits down with Evelyn Kocher to discuss a deeply personal journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the courage it takes to embrace one's true identity.Evelyn opens up about her transformative experience in 2020, a year marked by uncertainty, depression, and a search for meaning. After facing a lack of academic validation and grappling with feelings of disconnection, Evelyn realized that she couldn't continue living a life that didn't feel authentic to her. At 24, she came to terms with her identity as a transgender woman. This was her catalyst for change, a turning point that set her on a path to living authentically — even though it meant confronting her deepest fears.Dawne and Evelyn dive into why change can be so frightening, especially when it forces us to face things we've been avoiding. The episode explores how society's fear of the unknown often leads to resistance and how personal growth often requires us to confront discomfort head-on.Evelyn's journey isn't just about gender identity; it's about the universal experience of embracing who we truly are despite the noise and judgment of others. As Evelyn continues to wake up each day in a body that once represented her greatest shame, she now sees it as a symbol of strength. Her story is a reminder that confronting our deepest fears can unlock our greatest potential. This episode is a moving and thought-provoking conversation about self-acceptance, personal transformation, and the courage it takes to live in your truth.

In this solo episode of WAIT.HOLD UP...WHAT?, Dawne Hanks reflects on the power and significance of being called “weird.” Inspired by a conversation with her nephew, who was labeled "weird" for playing outside alone at school, Dawne dives deep into how the word "weird" is often used to belittle, but it actually carries a much more powerful meaning.Dawne shares her personal journey of being called “weird” from childhood through her professional life, and how these moments made her shrink and question whether she could just be “normal.” But in this episode, Dawne uncovers the fascinating truth behind the word “weird” – it comes from WYRD, an old English term meaning fate or destiny. Being weird isn't something to hide from; it's a sign that you're following your own path.Dawne encourages listeners to embrace their unique, beautiful weirdness and stop conforming to societal rules that try to box us in. It's time to lean into what makes you stand out and show up as your true, authentic self. This episode is a reminder that your weirdness is your destiny, and it's what makes you who you are.

#216 Neurony i pamięć - nowe metody badań weryfikują dawne twierdzenia | dr hab. Jan Kamiński

Radio Naukowe

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2024 52:27

Mózg to chyba najbardziej tajemniczy z ludzkich organów.

Historycy i farmaceuci z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, Uniwersytetu Medycznego im. O staropolskich lekach, a szczególnie o teriaku, rozmawiam z dr Danutą Raj i dr. By móc odtworzyć dawny lek, trzeba najpierw rozszyfrować przepis.

Lakey's Woods is being recognized as a Century farm at this year's Wisconsin State Fair. Dawne Lakey shares the story of his Trempealeau County farm. The first Lakey generation emigrated to Trempealeau County from Devonshire, England in 1860. At the height of the family farming operation he had accumulated hundreds of acres for widely diverse uses such as corn, beans, peas, wheat, hay and oats while also building a grade A dairy herd, steers, swine and sheep. A 25 acre stand of woodlands were preserved, and enhanced that stand to this day. The untimely deaths of two sons altered the course of the lives of at least three families. Raymond, Lakey's grandfather, was the youngest son and had expressed his early desire to live a city life in Chicago. As the sole remaining son, the responsibilities of the farm fell to him. Today the farmstead is working to lease tillable acres to a solar energy company.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From 1910 to 1948, African women contributed to political thought as editorialists, club organizers, poets, leaders, and activists who dared to challenge the country's segregationist regime at a time when it was bent on consolidating White power. Daughters of Africa founder Cecilia Lillian Tshabalala and National Council of African Women President Mina Tembeka Soga feature in this work, which employs the artistic theory of “sampling” and decoloniality to highlight and showcase how these women and others among their cadre spoke truth to power through the fiery lines of their poetry, newspaper columns, thought-provoking speeches, organizational documents, personal testimonies, and musical compositions. In the conclusion of our four-part series on LGBTQ people and the church, we speak with Drs. Dawne Moon, a sociologist, and Theresa Tobin, a philosopher, who research and write collaboratively about the experiences of LGBTQ Christians in non-affirming church spaces. This conversation is frank, profound, heartbreaking, and, somehow, funny. We discuss their concept of "sacramental shame" and how it's used against LGBTQ people, what binary gender has to do with sexuality, the origin of gender complementarianism, whether it makes sense to be egalitarian but non-affirming, the importance of relationship for identifying love, how love and pride are related, and more. You can find some of Dawne and Theresa's work together at these links:Relationship, Humility, JusticeAlpha, Omega, and the Letters in Between: LGBTQI Conservative Christians Undoing GenderSunsets and Solidarity: Overcoming Sacramental Shame in Conservative Christian Churches to Forge a Queer Vision of Love and JusticeThe Politics of Shame in the Motivation to Virtue: Lessons from the Shame, Pride, and Humility Experiences of LGBT Conservative Christians and Their AlliesThe whiskey we tasted in this episode is Oppidan Four Grain Straight Bourbon. The beverage tasting is at 1:27.
