As a teenager, Dr. Nche Zama came to the United States on a student visa with just $20 in his pocket. He was homeless for a while until a compassionate person took him in and helped guide him on his journey to the American Dream. Dr. Zama was the second of six children, raised in grass huts by illiterate but hardworking parents who instilled within him the values of discipline, pragmatism, and community. When he witnessed the preventable and horrific death of his mother during childbirth due to the lack of access to a doctor and proper medical care, his life's purpose shifted forever. His father sold his property, so young Zama could travel to America for a better education. Today, Nche Zama, MD, PhD, is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon who completed training at the Cleveland Clinic and Harvard University. He holds a PhD in chemistry, a Harvard master's degree in management, and a medical degree. He is recognized as one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons in the country and is often sought out for his expertise. He has held positions across Pennsylvania as Director of the ESSA Heart and Vascular Institute in East Stroudsburg, Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Jefferson Aria Health in Philadelphia, Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, and has been a Staff Cardiothoracic Surgeon for Susquehanna Health Systems in Williamsport and York Hospital in York. He founded a humanitarian organization to provide medical and surgical care to the poor and disadvantaged. On one of his global humanitarian missions, he performed the first pediatric cardiac surgery in his native country of Cameroon. Valuing education, he has financially supported over two dozen of his nieces and nephews through college, provides financial support for an entire elementary school for poor children, and as vice chair of an American educational empowerment organization he has contributed to the construction of a new academy in Africa to train innovative thinkers and future leaders. He has also served as a Clinical Associate Professor at Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Besides his extensive humanitarian efforts, Dr. Zama enjoys reading, traveling, music, hiking, running, and learning new languages—adding to the six he already speaks. He enjoys spending time with his children, grandchildren, and family. "The song remains the same" The story picks up toward the end of the 1970's; "interesting stuff was going on ... Professor William Shoemaker, a surgeon and intensive care doctor one of the founding members of the American critical care society ... fiddling around with pulmonary artery catheters in his high risk surgical patients in South Los Angeles, and identified that those patients that were surviving tended to have higher cardiac indexes higher option deliveries than the non survivors". This piece was Dingle 2020's Inaugural Siobhan Mythen Visiting Lecturer. For more content from that meeting check TopMedTalk's archive or go to www.ebpom.org for video presentations. Tonight's special guest is Michelle Frey from Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, a survivor of abuse, who also handles child abuse in her professional role as a Forensic Nurse Examiner and RN at York Hospital. She shares, “I have witnessed or have been the recipient of abuse for a large portion of my life. Physical and sexual abuse runs rampant on my father’s side of the family. Incest has affected many of my family members including my father, aunts, and many cousins. My father was an alcoholic and drug addict. My parents had a very toxic relationship where my mom was addicted to my dad and my dad was addicted to everything else. I was sexually abused by my second father’s best friend for 2 years of my life.” Michelle continues, "The harsh realities of child abuse really does feel like an everyday battle that a large percent of the population chooses to ignore. I’m grateful for groups like [NAASCA] where people can come together and feel supported and not under constant attack." About her work, she shares, “As a forensic nurse I could get called to testify in child abuse cases so I have to make sure I don’t do anything where I can be perceived as biased to a defense attorney. I was also a little nervous because I never spoke to a large number of people about my person abuse history. However, I’ve been coming out more and more. I was triggered severely by seeing a person distort child abuse information to suite a personal/ political agenda, as a nurse I feel as though I’m in the middle of this coronavirus war. After I was able to bring myself back emotionally, I feel that maybe it would be beneficial to speak to my experiences in order to help spread awareness and objective information.”

Ann Lee Hussey has made the eradication of polio and the alleviation of suffering by polio survivors her life’s work. In the past 12 years she has actively participated in 25 volunteer NID (National Immunization Days) teams organizing and leading the last 18 teams herself, choosing to take those NIDs to places that do not often see westerners – Chad, Mali, Bangladesh, Niger, Nigeria as well as less “touristy” destinations in Egypt and India – where the need is greatest and where the publicity and goodwill surrounding the trip are as critical as the immunizations themselves to help communicate the need for eradication. She has shared her story and passion hundreds of times carrying the message of PolioPlus around the Rotary world and beyond, raising money and creating new converts to the fight. She is determined that no child will needlessly have to suffer what she herself, a polio survivor, has been through. But for all the immunizations Ann Lee has herself made possible through NIDs, she considers fundraising and public awareness her most critical accomplishments. Ann Lee’s work has earned her the International Service Award for a Polio-Free World and the Rotary Service Above Self Award. Outside Rotary, Ann Lee served as a trustee of York Hospital and currently serves on the board of Port Resources, an organization that supports developmentally challenged adults in Portland, Maine.Ann Lee Hussey will be speaking at Toledo Rotary on Oct. 21st for World Polio Day. Jill Fratianne, a partner channel manager at Hubspot, talks with host Jen Spencer about qualities she looks for in a new partner, insights she's picked up as a business owner and the importance of face time –– all on the the latest episode of The Allbound Podcast. What are some changes you've noticed in the industry over the years? People are very educated when they get to the point of meeting a sales rep. They don't want to talk to you unless you have some extra value to add to the conversation. How do you compare against your competitors? What can you tell me about my business and how is a solution going to give me deliverable results? Never assume they don't know more than you, or haven't done research before they got to you, because they have. What advice or guidance do you give your partners? You're not there to sell for the sake of selling. People despise that. However, people do enjoy a sales process if they think it's done well, because they wouldn't be talking to you if they weren't interested in your services somehow. I've learned both through business ownership and sales that if you're doing the right thing for people, and you really listen to their goals, they actually appreciate a bit of pushing from you because you're trying to do the right thing for them. How do you build relationships with partners? You have to have a personality type that puts them first –– their needs first and their business first, and your needs second. From now until the end of time. It comes down to personal relationships and caring. How do you measure the success of new and existing partners? We look at everything including what types of calls we do with partners, how many calls we're having with agencies every day and whether they are registering new leads. Then, of the types of leads that we're getting, how many coaching calls have I had per marketing agency? Are there any agencies that I have in my book that I am forgetting, or ignoring, or just not paying attention to because they're just not speaking up to me? We measure all of the activity, because in sales, that's the only thing you can control. What challenges do you have in engaging your partners in marketing for themselves? Those who are successful market themselves. Meaning, you'll attract more business when people see that you actually drink your own champagne. I have a free Hubspot account, and I have an account that I pay for. My family and I started a very small, but now wildly successful, wedding business using Hubspot and inbound marketing. I don't have time to do it, but I force myself to use the software, understand marketing, publish posts, do all those things. It allows me to have the conviction when talking to marketing agency clients. Speed Round Questions: What's your favorite city? Portland, Maine. Animal lover? Yes or No? Of course! Mac or PC? Both. Uber or Lyft? Uber All expenses paid trip, where would it be to? I'd not go anywhere. I'd go over to York Hospital where I am delivering this baby girl in a couple weeks and see her healthy and happy in my arms.
