Our show's 75th episode has a special guest in Jayson Stark, one of the most well-respected, well-liked baseball writers for more than 40 years. His passion for the game and craft shines through as he discusses growing up as Stan Hochman's pen pal, studying Peter Gammons early in his career, and mentoring other young reporters. Jayson has some wild tales – including a near punch by Dickie Noles, and Dallas Green's special gift – from being a beat writer covering the early '80s Philadelphia Phillies. Hear how Jayson developed his weekly baseball column, renowned since 1983 for humor, oddball stats and offbeat facts. He tells us about a World Series game that he considers the best in history. And there's even a story connecting a Sammy Sosa homer and a certain Frenchman. The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Stark the 2019 winner of its Career Excellence Award, which he received at the Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Jayson worked 21 years at his hometown Philadelphia Inquirer, first serving as the Phillies' beat reporter (1979-82) and then becoming the paper's national baseball writer and columnist in '83. His Baseball Week in Review column proved so popular in syndication that it continued after he was hired by ESPN in 2000. For the next 17 years, Stark served as a senior baseball writer for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine while making regular appearances on the cable network's TV shows “Baseball Tonight,” “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines,” as well as regular ESPN Radio guest spots on “Mike and Mike” and as co-host of a weekly radio show during the baseball season on ESPN Radio's affiliate in Philadelphia. His TV work includes appearances on Major League Baseball Productions, NFL Films and Philadelphia's Comcast SportsNet. He is also a former baseball analyst for the Sports Fan radio network and a commentator on the Phillies' pregame radio show. Despite his popularity and proficiency, Stark was laid off by ESPN in April 2017. He has been covering baseball at The Athletic and MLB Network since 2018. Jayson also served as a columnist for Baseball America for 16 years and has written for Sports Illustrated, Sport, Inside Sports, Sporting News, Men's Fitness and Athlon. His first job in journalism was at the Providence Journal (1975-78). Stark has won an Emmy for his work on "Baseball Tonight," has been inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and is a two-time winner of the Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year award given by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was a finalist for that group's National Sportswriter of the Year award in 2017. Stark was honored by Penn State's Foster Conference for Distinguished Writers in 2010. He has won several awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, and he was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. That year, Topps issued a Jayson Stark baseball card. Jayson is the author of three books: “Wild Pitches: Rumblings, Grumblings, and Reflections on the Game I Love” (2014) “Worth The Wait: Tales of the 2008 Phillies” (2011) “The Stark Truth: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players in Baseball History” (2007) Stark earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Syracuse University in 1973. He was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the city's Northeast section. His mother, June Herder Stark, wrote for the Philadelphia Record and worked alongside legendary sportswriter Red Smith. She later edited the Philadelphia edition of Where Magazine. You can follow Stark on X: @jaysonst Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Pitching Command Show with guest Peter Gammons, hall of fame sports writer. With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. It's no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today. Peter began his journalism career at the Boston Globe where he covered the Red Sox for most of the 1970s and 1980s. He was also a lead baseball columnist for Sports Illustrated, as well as writing a column for Sporting News. Peter then joined ESPN as a baseball analyst in 1988 and appeared regularly on Baseball Tonight and also made appearances on SportsCenter. In 2009, he left ESPN and joined the MLB Network. Sheldon Ocker reflects on more than four decades of being a sportswriter in northeast Ohio with his customary wit and dry sense of humor. He takes into the clubhouse and behind the scenes during his 33 seasons of covering Major League Baseball in Cleveland for the Akron Beacon Journal. The Hall of Fame writer shares anecdotes from when the then-Indians were miserable in the 1980s and from when they morphed into memorable mashers in the '90s. Hear about the time Albert Belle raced Ocker in their rental cars, about Manny Ramirez asking him for a $60,000 loan, and about what pitch call Jose Mesa shook off in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. Sheldon also has some great tales from his 10 years of covering the NBA as a Cavaliers beat reporter in the 1970s. His story about a day spent with infamous Cavs owner Ted Stepien is one of the best we've heard in nearly 70 episodes.   Ocker was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing. He was presented with that award in July 2018 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's induction in Cooperstown, N.Y. Besides his stellar reporting, Ocker was known for rarely taking a day off during a season when he covered baseball from 1981 until his retirement after the 2013 season. Sheldon was named the Ohio Sports Writer of the Year in 1997 and 2000 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Dickerson made his debut in the Tigers booth in 2000 and has been the lead play-by-play announcer for them since 2002. He is a three-time Michigan Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, earning the accolade in 2005, 2006 and 2014. Dickerson is a native of Clarkston, Michigan, and his wife, L.A., is also a professor at MSU. Conversation Highlights: On the labor issues in the Major League Baseball lockout: “These are complicated issues, but I firmly believe in my heart there are solutions out there. We just got fans back in the stands in full force towards the end of last season. We need to build on that momentum and not lose any games.” On the Hall of Fame status of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens: “This is a museum that's supposed to reflect the history of the game. Were Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens a big part of the history of the game? Yes! Clearly, they deserve to be in; they're two of the greatest of all time. And then you just make sure you tell the whole story. That's the whole point of a museum.” On the pace of play in baseball: He's not opposed to a pitch clock. “I do think it could pick up the pace of play.” He's not in favor of moving the mound back. “The extra inning runner is probably here to stay, and I'm in favor of having the designated hitter in both leagues.” On the prospects for the 2022 Tigers: “Greene and Torkelson are the headliners, but this is a pretty deep farm system. I've been a Tigers fan since 1967, and I don't ever remember two prospects with this level of national acclaim. Both are considered top ten if not top five hitting prospects in all of baseball. A.J. Hinch knows you win with pitching and defense, and they've got the makings of a team that can do that. Last year, Hinch really wanted to get to 500. I guarantee you they'll go into spring training with the goal of winning the division. Winning a world championship will be the goal from here on out.” On radio and how fans consume play-by-play: “As long as people are outside in the summer, driving cars, having family get togethers, fishing, walking, or whatever it might be, there will be a place for baseball on the radio. And there are just more ways to listen now. I don't worry about it at all. I know people aren't carrying around transistor radios anymore and putting them under their pillows, but they have phones. And for $2.99 a month you can listen not just to Tigers baseball but all broadcasts from around baseball. You can listen on your phone. You can listen on your laptop. There are so many ways to listen, and people are taking advantage of them.” On teaching play-by-play at MSU: “It's fun. I enjoy interacting with the students. I enjoy it because I know how I do what I do, but how do I teach what I do? Where do you start with someone who's never done it before? You need to come up with a vocabulary and be able to say the same thing five or six different ways. We practice a lot with college basketball because it's so fast paced. Don't have the crowd roaring and you're still trying to get the ball down the court. As long as you can keep up with the play, think of all things you can describe and describe them well. That takes time. The kids are great, and I love being in the classroom. They energize me.” Find Dan on Cameo with all proceeds going to benefit students in need in sports journalism at MSU and follow Dan Dickerson on Twitter @Dan_Dickerson. (Audio courtesy of Major League Baseball) MSU Today airs Sunday mornings at 9:00 on WKAR News/Talk and Sunday evenings at 8:00 on 760 WJR. Over the next fifty years, he covered innumerable sporting events for a variety of networks, most notably CBS Sports, which he first joined in 1982. He moved to Turner Sports in 1995 for three years, while continuing to cover figure skating for CBS. He returned to the network in 1998, and two years later he began his tenure as the beloved play-by-play announcer for SEC on CBS. Over the course of his time with CBS, he covered more than twenty different sports for the network. Verne has always seen himself as a teller of stories, and he doesn't hold anything back in PLAY BY PLAY as he takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most iconic moments in sports history, including: . Jack Nicklaus' legendary one-stroke victory at the 1986 Masters Tournament . Christian Laettner's buzzer beater in the 1992 NCAA Tournament, which sent the Blue Devils to the Final Four . Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Winter Olympics . Tiger Woods' astounding comeback at the 2005 Masters Tournament . The "Year of the Upset" - the historic year when an unranked or lower-ranked team defeated a favorite 59 times over the course of the 2007 regular season, including teams lead by Tim Tebow (University of Florida) and Matt Flynn (LSU) . Tennessee-Alabama in 2009, when Terrence "Mount" Cody blocked two crucial kicks to bring home another Crimson Tide victory . The Kick Six Iron Bowl of 2013, where the Auburn Tigers delivered a shocking blow to the heavily favored University of Alabama Verne also remembers the friendships he's made along the way, and shares with readers personal, surprising anecdotes about his life both inside and outside the booth, including: . His lifelong fascination with radio, and the call that brought him into a radio booth for the first time (surprise: it had nothing to do with sports) . The small, but important, role he played as a KTBC-AM (Austin) employee on November 22, 1963 - the day JFK Jr. was assassinated . Why he initially viewed the SEC play-by-play gig as a demotion, and what made him realize it was actually the most significant assignment of his career . The conversations he had with Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach about his recurring concussions and how they might impact him down the line . The legendary broadcaster who convinced Verne to host Bowling for Dollars - and why . Why he disagreed with President Carter's decision to pull the U.S. out of the 1980 Moscow Olympics . His unlikely love affair with figure skating, and his longtime friendship with Scott Hamilton . Why he agrees with many that University of Alabama's Nick Saban is the greatest college football coach to date . The time he found himself in the middle of a near altercation between Bob Knight and Tommy Heinsohn . Happy Gilmore - how he came to be part of the famous film, and how he learned he was second choice to Pat Summerall . Why he feels so passionately about the Army-Navy game, and why he chose it as his final college football broadcast ABOUT VERNE LUNDQUIST VERNE LUNDQUIST began his remarkable broadcasting career at KTBC-TV in Austin, TX. He joined CBS Sports in 1982, and during his tenure he covered more than twenty sports for the network. Lundquist was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2007, and in May 2016 he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports at the 37th annual Sports Emmy Awards. He lives in Steamboat Springs, CO. "Verne Lundquist's legendary voice echoes throughout the annals of sports broadcasting. He is a timeless storyteller with a unique ability to make fans feel like they are sitting right next to him watching history, while at the same time almost not realizing he is even there. Verne is a friend, a Hall of Famer, and the soundtrack to so many unforgettable memories in sports history." -NICK SABAN, Head Football Coach, University of Alabama Crimson Tide "Uncle Verne made Saturdays better, he made the SEC better, and he made college football better. Thank you for sharing your story with sports fans everywhere. Readers are sure to be entertained by your powerful storytelling." -TIM TEBOW, Heisman Trophy Winner and New York Times bestselling author "I have never known any other broadcaster who touches my dear friend Verne Lundquist's heart, mind, and talent. My many years of sitting to his right were the very best in my television career. Class, integrity, knowledge, and experience put him in a class by himself. A storyteller telling his story. Doesn't get much better than that!" -SCOTT HAMILTON, 1984 Olympics Men's Figure Skating Gold Medalist

Wolff has been a professional broadcaster in nine decades and is still going strong. Seen and heard on two ESPN TV specials in 2008, he’s been on the Madison Square Garden Network since 1954 and on Cablevision’s News 12 Long Island since 1986.Wolff became the pioneer TV voice of the Washington Senators Baseball Club in 1947, moved with the team to Minnesota in 1961 and then joined NBC as the play-by-play man on the TV Baseball Game-of-the-Week in 1962.Also heard on Mutual's Game-of-the-Day, Wolff was selected to be a World Series broadcaster in 1956 and that year called the Don Larsen perfect game across the country on the Mutual Broadcast System and around the world on the Armed Forces radio. He also was on NBC Radio for the World Series in 1958 and 1961.Wolff has been seen and heard doing play-by-play on all the major TV networks. Another of his classic broadcasts was the NY Giants / Baltimore Colts 1958 NFL Championship Game called, “The Greatest Game Ever Played”. On the collegiate scene, he's broadcast the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl and many others.Wolff became known regionally as television's play-by-play voice for eight teams in five different sports – the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons of the NBA as well as the New York Rangers of the NHL, the Washington Senators, and Minnesota Twins of MLB, the Baltimore Colts, Washington Redskins, and Cleveland Browns of the NFL, and soccer’s Tampa Bay Rowdies. For many years he was the play-by-play telecaster for all events originating from Madison Square Garden. His broadcast partner with the Knicks for many years was Cal Ramsey. In addition to the Don Larsen perfect World Series call, and the Colts first overtime championship title win over the New York Giants, Wolff also called Jackie Robinson's last major league hit which won game six of the World Series in 1956 and he was also the TV voice of the New York Knicks only two championships. Could the Reds finish second or third in the National League Central? Andy Furman talked Reds baseball with baseball reporter Hal McCoy. Hal McCoy has covered the Reds since 1973. He is partially retired now, but he still covers Reds home games for the Dayton Daily News and for his blog halmccoy.com. In 2015, McCoy was inducted in the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association's Hall of Fame. McCoy said the Reds have shown him a lot this season and could be much better than anticipated. McCoy said last year's Reds bullpen was the worst he had ever seen. This year the bullpen has been lights out. That has been his biggest surprise. "That's probably the reason they are 9-6 instead of 6-9," McCoy said. McCoy said he thinks 40-year-old starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo will only get better and will stick around for awhile on the team. Plus, Furman and Ken Broo discuss why FC Cincinnati is getting bigger crowds than the Reds and whether U.S. Bank Arena will get replaced in a bid to bring the NCAA tournament to Cincinnati. 0:45 - Furman and Broo talk Reds and how baseball stacks up to soccer in Cincinnati 6:16 - Will U.S. Bank Arena get a new facility to bring NCAA to Cincinnati 14:55 - Reds reporter Hal McCoy joins to talk Reds baseball Find more at http://wcpo.com/AndyFurman

The Seahawks lose for the third time at home this season, this time losing 23-17 to the St. Louis Rams. Leading from start to finish, they snap Russell Wilson and the Seahawks' streak of having a lead at some point during the game. Adam and Brandan talk about how it seemed like St. Louis was going to win when they managed to fumble their way down the field on their way to 23 points. Seattle had a chance at coming back up until Wilson lost the ball on the 10-yard line with less than five minutes to play. Looking ahead, the guys take a look at the Seahawks potential playoff matchups and who they'd like to see the team play among the Packers, Vikings and Skins. Based on the outcome of the Seahawks and Cardinals, the Sunday night game could determine which team will play the Seahawks in the first round. This week's game against the Cardinals will be Seattle's first chance to get into playoff mode, playing on the road against a team that has a shot to lock up the top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. We respond to emails that came in this week before getting into Do Better. This week's picks are the San Diego Chargers organization and a guy in the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame with more than 20 Sports Emmys on his shelf at home. Better at life honors go out to J.J. Abrams this week and a 15-year veteran wide receiver who has decided to return for a final season. iTunes | Stitcher | TuneIn | Facebook | Twitter | RSS Call or text: 253-235-9041Email: gohawks@seahawkerspodcast.comVisit Patreon.com if you'd like to help support the show and get bonus contentDownload our free Amazon app, Android app, or iOS app Find Sea Hawkers clubs around the world at SeaHawkers.orgMusic from the show by The 12 Train, download each track at ReverbNation
