***Due to a technical error, some subscribers downloaded a mostly silent, 1.75 hour long version of this episode. This is a re-uploaded, correct version. After a recent visit to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, our former producer Xandra McMahon proclaimed, “Ugh, why do we have zoos?” That episode didn't go over so well with the folks from the Denver Zoo, and they invited us to come see for ourselves why zoos are still cool. So newsletter editor Peyton Garcia (zoo lover), producer Paul Karolyi (zoo skeptic), and host Bree Davies (zoo ambivalent) stopped by recently for some fresh perspective. It's our producer Xandra's last hurrah in Denver before she heads off to Philadelphia. So we had to ask: What‘s on your bucket list before you leave Colorado? Her number one choice was a trip to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keensburg, home to 38 tigers that once belonged to the man they call the Tiger King. So we sent her off to visit this past weekend. Bree sits down with Xandra to get the inside scoop on what the sanctuary is like, what kinds of animals you can find there, and why this space made just for lions, tigers, and (very big) bears feels so different from visiting a traditional zoo.  Plus: you, our dear listeners and readers, had some fantastic recommendations for Xandra's bucket list and Peyton rounds them up in the City Cast Denver newsletter. Email to Jamie Oct. 1, 2016 SD:  Michael Welchynski, founder of Spirit of the Hills, a pseudo sanctuary located at 500 Tinton Rd. Spearfish SD, was found by first responders to be covered in bites to his head, neck, shoulders and arms.  He had been bitten by a tiger (presumably Louise or Raphael) who escaped through an open gate.  At first no one knew where the tiger was lurking.  Deputies approached the tiger's enclosure to secure the still open gate. “It peeked its head out of the door a couple times, and the third time it crouched down and started coming out the door,” deputy Paul Hansen said.  “There is really nothing fence-wise, they told us, that would keep something like (the tiger) in the perimeter, because they are not tall fences,” Hansen said.  The tiger was shot and killed.  Welchynski is in the hospital in fair condition.  The remaining big cats were relocated to Wild Animal Sanctuary in CO.  The USDA had been camped out at the facility since Sept. 28th for undisclosed reasons.   In other news, the court ordered Joe and Jeff Lowe to pay the receiver $50,000 immediately.  Since it is an order and not a judgement, they have to pay or go to jail.  Can't post online yet, but thought you would like to know.   Jumanji and Tonga both doing very well tonight.   I am thankful that Chuck took down so many of the dead and low branches yesterday as Hurricane Matthew will hit the east coast today with 145 MPH winds.   I appreciate that Steve Houck, our FWC officer, called to be sure we would be OK during the storm.   I love Howie for cleaning up all of the palm fronds and pods that are scattered over our 5 acres, so they don't become missiles.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! If you want to see them squirm, here are the questions to ask. And what I know about the real answer.   Michael Sandlin   1. Is it true there had been a ban on keeping tigers in Iberville Parish since 1993? Yes 2. Why was a special exception made for you?  I heard it was because of family relationships. 3. What accredited sanctuaries (GFAS or ASA, not Joe's USZA) have offered to take Tony at no charge and even to do so quietly to help you save face?  Big Cat Rescue, Wild Animal Sanctuary and possibly others.  I know that most GFAS cat sanctuaries would do it just to stop our phones from ringing with all of the complaints by those who see the tiger living in a truck stop. 4. Why choose Joe, who is still under investigation by USDA for the deaths of 23 tiger cubs, or Serenity Springs, which is currently in litigation with USDA for substandard care, over places with such great reputations and resources if you love Tony?   I know you only have 10 minutes so I will try to keep it to the most pertinent.  Questions for Joe Schreibvogel, but you should ask for proof because I think he is an experienced con man:   1. How many big cats live at GW Zoo? The reason to ask that is he claims to only own 47 of them and says the rest are owned by others, so see if you can pin down who they are and how many cats each of them owns.  Beth Corley hasn't been there in years, but someone, presumably Joe, keeps renewing her license to keep as many at 200 animals on one inspection report.  John Reinke or Joe always signs the USDA reports for all of these other "owners" that include a circus owned by Doug Terranova and I suspect one run by Gary Douglas, but not sure of the latter. 2. What are the ages of your cats? On his census he listed 2 born in 1999 and 3 born in 2000 and all of the rest were younger. Compare to real sanctuaries and you will find our average ages are 15-20, because we aren't breeding cats.  He has to keep a census, in case USDA wants to see it, so ask to see it. 3. How many big cats were born on his grounds in the past 20 years? The spreadsheet I'll send you will show 131 cats born there between 2001 and 2011.  (We bred cats here, back in the 1990s, before we knew that they can't help conservation in any way, and still have 12 alive from back then.  The rest of our 97 cats have been rescued.) 4. How many cats have you sold or given away?  Given the fact that Joe keeps offloading cats to places we consider pretty awful, and so many cats seem to just disappear, why is this the best place for Tony?   Please don't copy Joe with the following as we are building a case against him, but feel free to question him about the specifics.   Some Places Joe Sent Cats   1. 10/24/10 Joe sent a Tiger to Wildwoods in PA   In 2012 USDA cited Wildwoods for keeping a tiger in a cage only 72 in high and not big enough to move around freely.  Photos show tiny, barren, concrete and steel cells for tigers   Exhibits:  USDA inspections, three photos of tiny, barren cages   2. 6/21/11  Joe sent a leopard to Jeremy Hinkle (Joe's spelling “Jeromy”)   As of 2011 Jeremy Hinkle had racked up13 bad USDA inspections in 5 yrs   Exhibits:  USDA inspections, news from 2011   USDA inspections included: • Failure to provide veterinary care to animals who had broken legs • Dangerous disrepair in big cat cages • Failure to provide shade to the tigers • Filthy conditions and rat infestation of feeding areas • Failure to provide clean drinking water • Improper handling of drugs and medications • Storing a dead lion in the freezer with the animal food   3. 6/25/11 Joe sent three tigers to Noah's Ark.  He sent a 4th tiger, but no date   Park manager says that these tigers were misrepresented to her as cats Joe rescued and did not have room for, but all of them had been born at GW Park and used as photo props.  Lost over $100k 2009 and 2010, raising issue of whether they were being sent to a place that could assure good care long term.   Exhibits:  USDA inspections 2008 and 2010, 990 2009-10   USDA inspections 2008 and 2010 included:   Failure to obtain health certificates for wild animals crossing state lines Improper storage and handling of food items to protect from contamination   4. 7/1/11 Joe sent a leopard to Tiger World and on 8/11/11 sent them a tiger   In 2011 Tiger World was fined by USDA for a long history of violations and their 990 shows them in the red.   Exhibits:  USDA inspections 2007-2011, 990s 2009-10, news article trying to send cats to Iraq, photo of tiny barren cage, Born Free press release re USDA revoking owner license and being sold to someone he trained.   USDA inspections included: Fine $2,571 in 2011 for the improper handling of a tiger, its escape and lack of barricades to protect the public, gave lions and tigers inappropriate toys they had chewed, including plastic barrels with chunks of sharp pieces missing and possibly ingested.   5. 8/4/11 Joe sent a tiger to the Hillcrest Clovis NM Zoo   Exhibits:  USDA inspections 2009-2011   USDA inspections included: Dilapidated cages, insecure doors, missing fences, poor housekeeping and flies and rats in the washroom, news article of zoo guests tormenting animals, facebook pictures of Sooner the tiger, who appears to have come from Joe and is chewing plastic   6. 8/20/11 sent 2 tigers to Robert Engessor of The Zoo   Engessor reportedly has sold lion cubs via the Animal Finder's Guide   Exhibits:  USDA inspections 2007-2011, visitor comments “sad exhibit of miserable animals” and another who said the facility was just as bad   USDA Inspections include: • In 2011 USDA cited The Zoo numerous times for: • Using a 16 week old cub that was unmanageable for interaction and photos • Using a 6 week old lion cub who had not been vaccinated yet for photo ops • Failing to provide proper food and water sources • Failure to provide adequate veterinary care • Failing to provide environmental enrichment to primates • Failing to maintain enclosures and transport trailers • Poor housekeeping • Leopard attacking a 5-year-old girl, causing injuries • In 2007 he was cited for Using an unvaccinated 6 week old cub for interaction and photos • Failure to keep proper transfer records   7. 10/25/11 Joe sent a tiger to Forever Wild Exotics   On Forever Wild's website they state that the person they got the cub from (Joe not mentioned by name) lied to them saying the 12 wk cub was DNA surplus for Indo Chinese breeding program.  Had ringworm and was actually 20 weeks old.   Exhibits:  2007 news article that they were in over their heads financially and that if their house went into foreclosure they would euthanize all of their animals, news article bragging that they wrestle with bears, 3 news articles about a leopard being so fat that her belly dragged the ground to the point of gaping holes that had to be sewn shut.   8. 12/18/11 Joe sent *3 tigers, 2 leopards, 1 liger and a serval to Serenity Springs   The very next month the USDA sued them for violations dating back to 2007 for:   • No vet from 2007-2010 • The deaths of 31 young animals • Failure to vaccinate against distemper and failure to safeguard cats from carriers • Failure to treat ringworm on tiger cubs • Lacking perimeter fence • Unsafe conditions • Performing euthanasia without a vet by cutting the tiger's throat • Owner bilked a volunteer out of $40,000 after volunteer was bitten by a tiger (owner was convicted of fraud).   Exhibits:  USDA inspections 2007-2011, USDA lawsuit 2012, news article 2006 about dishonest dealing, OSHA report, 990s 2007-2010,  Joe's missing health certificate 1714878 for import 12/11 of *4 tigers, 3 leopards, 2 ligers, 1 serval and a paca, news article bilking volunteer for 40,000 after injury by tiger   9. 02/2012 Joe sent 2 yearling tigers to Doug Terranova in Kaufman, TX   This was just a few months after Terranova was fined 25,000 by USDA for: • Failure to properly handle tigers, elephants and others • The death of two cubs that were born on the road while the circus was traveling • (offspring of a brother and sister mating) • The third cub was in such poor condition that it was seized by USDA • Failure to maintain proper records • Failure to allow USDA inspections • Exhibiting animals without proper licenses •  •  Joe says he NEVER sends big cats to private owners; only USDA facilities, but these people are not USDA licensed   10. 11/13/09 Joe sent a Leopard and a Liger to Springhill Wildlife Center   They do not have a USDA license   2008 caught trying to sell tiger cubs in WalMart parking lot to Mexicans Joe issued press release describing the horrid conditions of the cats at Springhill   Exhibits:  Joe issued press release 4/27/08 saying that he was rescuing “two more tigers in jeopardy at the Springhill Wildlife Park in Calvert, TX.” He went on to say that he had rescued 18 tigers from there the year before who were “requiring surgeries and veterinary rehabilitation,” and that many were missing toes and feet from botched declaw jobs, and that one had been hit so hard in the eye that part of her skull had to be removed.  4 news articles about Springhill being busted selling tigers to Mexican nationals in the parking lot of  at TX WalMart and 4 photos of same   11. 8/3/10 Joe sent a tiger to Pam Pape in PA   No USDA and no record of her anywhere.  (HB: Facility could have license under a different name, but this is name Joe listed in census.)   Exhibits:  Screenshot of USDA search showing no one by that name and a screen shot of Joe's facebook page showing that she is not a friend of his there   12. 8/26/11 Joe claims to have sent a tiger to Tammy Thompson in TX   Tammy Thompson had been dead for more than a year, if it was the same Tammy Thompson who had been a big cat collector since the 1990s.   (Now might be a good time to remind the Judge that Joe uses Brian Rhyne to set up companies and accounts because Brian Rhyne has been dead for years too.)   Exhibits:  There is a Tammy Tomson in USDA records. I have a 2010 notation in AbandonedAnimals.xls where her husband called me saying she had died and needed to place her leopard but the phone number is no longer any good   Joe didn't list these on his census but others reported buying from him   13. 2005 Joe sold three lion cubs to the Amarillo Zoo, TX for $1500 ea   Exhibits: 2008 USDA Consent Order which terminated Mr Azzopardi's license at the Amarillo Zoo after he was found guilty in 2006 of a federal crime involving the interstate trading in endangered clouded leopards and a white tiger,  PeTA factsheet, 4 pages of bad reviews from TripAdvisor   USDA inspections revealed:   • Animals standing in mud and waste • Insecure exotic cat caging   14. Dade City's Wild Things   Joe sold cub born around July 7, 2010 for $5000.   (We submitted FOIA request to get import permits from FWC but not arrived)   Exhibits:  TBO article 9/14/10 indicating 9 week old white cub came from GW Park and Joe says he sold it to her for $5000.  USDA inspections 2007-2012, 20 photos of wretched conditions, a visitor's report of deplorable conditions for the cats, LookOut Mtn lawsuit and Dept Ag complaint that includes is, foreclosure and bankruptcy documents, mug shots from bad check charge and a Yelp 2 star rating.   USDA inspections included: • Failure to provide vet care to injured animals • Lack of shelter for tigers • Dilapidated big cat cages • Unsafe handling of dangerous animals with the public • Rusty serval cage • Nails protruding in tiger cages • Poor drainage causing the cats to wade in deep water and mud after rain • Inadequate perimeter fence • Lack of barricades • Refusal to allow inspections   Recently lost lawsuit and ordered to return two gibbons to rightful owners.   Reportedly under investigation by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs.  Arrested for bad check charges, has multiple entities and multiple bankruptcies.   16. 7/22/2008 Joe sent two tiger cubs to Nay Aug Zoo, PA aka Genesis   Sent two cubs here in the same year that Time Magazine ranked this the fourth worst zoo in the country.  The zoo closed in 2009, one year after the cubs arrived.  The Nay Aug director noted that one cub came with a case of ringworm that she had been fighting for months and that the cub appears to have a compromised immune system.  Director said she had to “donate” to GW to reserve the cubs.   Exhibits:  News articles about the cubs coming to Nay Aug and the zoo closing, photos of the decrepit cages.   17. 1/30/11 Joe transferred a white tiger cub to Bill Rutherford of Wild Bill's, OK   Exhibits:  Facebook post by Wild Bill about it, screenshot shows no USDA license   18. 10/15/11 Stapps Circle S Ranch   Exhibits:  USDA inspection June 2011, news article about the 2010 cats, news article about 8 week old cub Aug 2011.   USDA inspection contained: The three tigers were being fed improperly and that the adult tigers had suffered metabolic bone disease as a result   Foreign Zoos where Joe sent cougars   19. Joe claimed to donate 2 Siberian Tigers to Teresa Shaffer on 9/26/09   Exhibits:  USDA inspections from 2010 and 2011 showing that animals were being kept in incompatible groups and not providing proper dens and shelter.   25. Joe claimed to donate two 7 mo old bears to Dodge City Zoo on 10/08/11   Exhibits:  TripAdvisor visitor reviews only give this “zoo” 3 out of 5 stars and 3 USDA inspections from 2010 and 2011 stating that cages were in poor repair, insufficient shelter or dens and dangerous gaps in rusty cages.   26. Joe claimed to donate 6 adult lions and 2 adult bears to Gregg Woody 11/11/08   Exhibits:  8 bad USDA inspections from 2010-2012 including a bear biting a keeper, lack of proper barriers, cats kept in transport wagons, cages too small and dilapidated, no shelter for big cats, sharp edges in cages, lack of vet care and refusing to allow access for inspections.  Joe's census says that he loaned Gregg Woody a white tiger cub DOB 4/17/11 (Galiath x Norma Gene) who died while in his care.  Joe provided no transfer USDA form, nor health certificate on this cub, but it is likely that he sent the cub to be a photo prop, which means the cub had probably already died before Joe sent Woody 6 more lions and 2 bears.   27. Joe transferred 2 6mo old tigers to Sue Pearce in FL on 11/5/11   Exhibits:  6 bad USDA inspections in just 2011 and 2012 including repeated violations on 12 issues, dead lemurs found, spoiled meat, platforms are chewed and clawed and splintered, and failure to provide proper vet care and follow up care.   28. Charlotte Turton  claims to have paid Joe for 4 day old cub 5/6/2009   Exhibits:  Charlotte does not have a USDA license under her name.  Charlotte's facebook photos and text saying:   Charlotte Turton aah i thought you knew... I adopted this baby when she was only 4 days old from a cat sanctuary in Oklahoma. I got to play with her for about a month and a half then she went out on the road with the traveling magic show.. then without letting me know they gave her to a facility in Illinois. if you look through my albums you can see her pics from day 4 forward   Joe says he sends all of his dead tigers to the "Bone Museum" but they said, in deposition, they only ever got one tiger from Joe.  I have a copy of citations by the county against Joe for burning and burying carcasses, so where do all of the tigers (and other dead bodies) go?   The reason this is an important question is because all of these charlatans who are breeding and pimping out cubs say they are doing it for conservation.  The fact is that it hurts conservation because China is banking on the extinction of the tiger in order for their farmed tiger bones, teeth, claws and pelts to become more valuable.   Judy Mills, copied here, just wrote a thrilling narrative on the subject called Blood of the Tiger.  In the book she makes it clear that we have to stop breeding tigers in the U.S. if we are going to save them in the wild because China points a finger at us, when we try to curb their tiger farming, and says, "You don't even know where your tigers are!"   You could do an entire segment with Judy on how tigers will completely disappear from the wild if we don't stop the captive trade in them.  For the cats,  Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. DejaVu is all I can say   It happens over and over, like a recurring nightmare for the wild animals suffering through it; only the names and places change.   Someone wants to “rescue” wild animals because that seems like glamorous work, so they buy animals (and just prolong the problem) until the really bad guys find out there is a new place to dump last year's photo cubs, and then the “rescues” become more legitimate, in the eyes of the “rescuer” because at least they aren't paying for animals any more.   Usually the big cats who need rescuing are the cubs who just outgrew the ridiculous 8-12 week window, in which USDA condones the use of cubs for photo and pay to play sessions. All it takes to fix this mess is for USDA to acknowledge that it is a violation of the Animal Welfare Act to take cubs from their mothers for this inhumane, unethical, albeit lucrative exploitation… But I digress.   This video was shot in 2009 at JnK's Call of the Wild and the dangerous conditions, lack of respect for the powerful nature of these wild animals and lack of understanding of their physical and emotional needs was evident.  The cats were thin, but not starving yet at that time.   Five years go by, and citations pile up for not providing sufficient shelter, not having an attending vet, not willing to provide documentation of where the cats came from or went and having a perimeter fence that was only 2 feet above the 6 feet of snow.  This article from 2009 detailed the illegal purchase of a leopard that resulted in seizure and a fine, as well as a number of other violations, and yet the media treated it like a puff piece.  http://bigcatrescue.org/lions-tigers-and-bears-find-refuge/   So, every few weeks more litters of lions, tigers, primates and bears are bred, used and discarded into these pseudo sanctuaries. But then the animals grow up into 500 pound apex predators who require thousands of dollars in food & vet care each year and before you know it, the “sanctuaries” have collapsed under the collective weight and debt. Then other sanctuaries, of varying financial stability, are called in to clean up the mess; but most of those are not in much better shape than the facilities they are being asked to bail out.   Big cats are bounced around from breeder, to photo booth operator, to the public as pets, who then dump them into the hands of backyard hoarders, who collapse and then the bigger sanctuaries come and move them to their fourth or fifth home, where they may stay until they die, but even then will sometimes end up in yet another rescue situation when the bigger places fail as well.   The second worst part of all of this is that the animals suffer from the time they are only a few hours or days old, when they are ripped from their mothers and thrust into this dismal cycle, and begin the years of suffering as the legal processes wind through the courts.  The worst part of this scenario is that it would be so easily avoided by a ban on public contact with cubs.  Help do that here:  https://www.votervoice.net/BCR/Campaigns/30111/Respond   That's what happened at JnK's Call of the Wild.   In 1997 Ken and Jackie Wisniewski started “rescuing” big cats, bears, wolves and a variety of other wild and domestic animals. Before long they were in over their heads. Feeding the animals wasn't a problem because there is a lot of roadkill in Sinclairville, NY. We counted half a dozen dead deer, a duck and raccoon, in just two days visiting this sleepy little town. Maybe the locals drive too fast, or maybe it is all of the grape vineyards and farms that attract so much native wildlife.   The problem was that the rotting carcasses were just left to fester, along with the piling excrement, in the tiny, barren cages. The lions and tigers, who are the most fastidious creatures on earth, were forced to live in these abysmal, fly infested conditions while USDA went through the tedious process of citing the facility year, after year, after year with no improvements.   Finally after many years of failing to to provide vet care or clean and safe caging, USDA revoked the license, which is a multi year task. The state of NY had previously banned the private possession of big cats, bears and wolves, but in all but 4 states (KY, OH, WA & WV) a person could circumvent the ban if they held a USDA license.   Now JnK had lost their USDA license and the animals could have been seized years ago, but as is often the case, the violator will just have a family member or friend get a USDA license issued in their name and then the whole process starts over. When Ken and Jackie Wisniewski lost their USDA license, they just had their daughter, Kristy Wisniewski, get one in her name. It's easy: a one page form, name, address and phone and $40 and you can get around any ban, just about anywhere.   So, the long legal battles had to start over again until the daughter had a falling out with her mother and decided not to renew her USDA license. What usually happens is that there would now be no government agency checking in on the animals and conditions. These kinds of places would then enjoy the luxury of doing as they please with no one looking over their shoulder, and that would always lead to worse conditions for the animals.   By this time Terry Thompson in Zanesville, OH had set free 56 lions, tigers and bears in 2011 and state agencies awakened to the fact that it could happen in their states too. The NY state attorney's office decided to send a message to all of the backyard breeders, dealers and pseudo sanctuaries that they would no longer turn a blind eye to the danger that these facilities pose to the public and launched the biggest seizure of wild animals in New York's history.   USDA contacted the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and asked if they could place the JnK animals. GFAS made arrangements for all of the animals to be rescued, but then Jackie Wisniewski decided that she didn't want to give them up and would wait and see if the NY Department of Environmental Conservation really would take action, or if they would, like they do in most places, just ignore the situation until someone was mauled or killed.   On May 27, 2014 at 7:30 am Jackie Wisniewski found out the state of NY wasn't bluffing.   What she couldn't know, and we couldn't tell you, is that the International Fund for Animal Welfare, IFAW, had taken the lead and arranged for the 11 tigers, 3 lions, 3 bears, and 2 wolves to be picked up and transported to Big Cat Rescue in FL via Loving Friends, Safe Haven Wildlife Rescue Zoo in NV, Wild Animal Sanctuary in CO, In-Sync Exotics in TX, the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in IN, and Animal Lifeline would transport the wolves to a facility in PA.  On July 3rd IFAW reimbursed the transport costs of $4,409.03 for Big Cat Rescue.   We couldn't let the cat out of the bag until after the last animal was rescued from the site for fear of starting a media circus that could propel the owner into doing something dangerous to the animals or the rescue crews. We know that most people who will donate to help big cats want to fund a rescue, but once the cats are safe, they are off to the next exciting rescue.   We hope that you are different.   We went out on a limb because these cats were literally starving to death, and one tiger, Sasha, had died before we even arrived. (We had agreed to take four tigers, but when we got there Sasha was no longer alive and no one seemed to know anything about why or when she died.  Some said she was alive last summer, others said she was still alive in Feb of this year and others said she had been dead for years)  We had to give up the chance to involve everyone in the excitement of a rescue because these cats depended on us keeping quiet so the owner wouldn't do anything foolish. We were able to load our tigers by 1PM on Tues. May 27, 2014 but had to maintain silent mode until all of the animals were safely on their way to other rescue sites.   What we saw during the rescue was unimaginable suffering and conditions that clearly threatened everyone in the area. No agency had been able to inspect the animals since December 2013 (nearly 6 months ago) and at that time they said the cats were well fed, but that the rotting carcasses, piles of feces and ramshackle cages were reason enough to seize the animals.  “Well fed” appears to be a judgement call because the 2009 video of the tigers showed them to to be far too thin 5 years ago, in our opinion.  JnK had a pile of citations for not allowing inspectors onto the property, but in many cases those are considered by the bad guys to be far less incriminating than actually answering the gate and letting inspectors see what they are doing.   The cats were starving to death!   Their ragged fur, which was missing in places from laying in their own excrement, was stretched taut over protruding bones. Kimba the tigress, (born 8/94) seemed to have just given up and laid, unresponsive, in her den. Former volunteers there said she had been bred to Zeus for 4-6 litters of cubs in her life. It wasn't until she saw that there was the promise of food, in exchange for pulling her aching body up into the transport wagon, that she came to life. Big Cat Rescue President, Jamie Boorstein, had locked Kimba in her den so that we could push the wagon up to the rickety door. As soon as she was released and given the scent of beef on a stick, she followed it right into the foreign transport box without much hesitation.   Zeus the tiger, (born 9/96 to Kimba) has limited vision and it looks like his retina may be separated in his eye, which can be extremely painful. Other tigers there had the same strange looking eyes, where the golden part of the iris has almost completely covered over the lens.  As soon as Zeus saw food, he RAN down the length of his cage, chasing Big Cat Rescue's Operations Manager, Gale Ingham, who was racing  (outside the cage) toward the beast wagon that had been affixed to a hole that was cut into the side of his cage. Zeus was the largest tiger and the hole wasn't really big enough, but metal piping made it impossible to make the hole any larger. Zeus didn't care. He wanted that life giving morsel of food so bad that he squeezed, like liquid tiger, through the opening into the circus wagon. Jamie dropped the door and Zeus was on his way to a life of luxury that he couldn't possibly imagine.   The cages were rotted to the point of falling apart. Rusty screws held ragged sheets of plywood together for the dens and doors. If the tigers had any strength left in them, they could have burst through. This made for some tense moments, especially when it came to loading Keisha the tigress. (born 5/00 to Kimba and Zeus)   Apparently, the way cats had been fed, back when they were being fed, was they were locked out of their dens, the food tossed into the dens via a back door, and then they were let back into the den.   The part that has to be explained here is that the dens were made of crumbling plywood. Citations went back to 2012 for these unsafe conditions.  The doors had deteriorated over time to the point where a makeshift system was rigged to keep the tigers from just pushing the doors out of their rotted frames. It was made of curtain rod hooks that were shaped in a semicircle and screwed with tiny, and now rusted screws; one on either side of the door opening. Then 2 pipes were passed through the hooks to hold the doors shut. Jamie took a handful of the material and it turned to shards and dust in her hand.   The first attempt at capturing Keisha was to shut her in the den, then hook up the transport to a hole that was hastily cut into the side of her prison cell. With the other cats, Rescuers had been able to shut them out of their dens and lead them into the wagons, but Keisha still had life enough left in her to be frantic to eat, so as soon as her den door shut her out into the yard, she began clawing frantically to get back into the den where she thought the food would be. When a cat is focused on something, there isn't much you can do to get their attention. Gale was waving the chicken and beef chunks on a stick and trying to get Keisha to forget about getting back into the den for food. It wasn't working.   The area where Rescuers were working was so tight that the rope holding the transport door open had to be threaded into a vacant, nearby cage and operated from there by Big Cat Rescue's CEO and Founder, Carole Baskin.  Jamie decided to pull the den door open and hold it open so that Keisha could see for herself that there wasn't any food in there, but Keisha was afraid to climb into the hay filled beast wagon and sensed it was a trap.   In typical cat style, she would stretch her neck and one paw as far toward the juicy meat as she could, without committing her back legs. Gale let her come in and get a piece or two, to see that nothing would happen, and on the third offering Keisha was emboldened to climb all the way in.   Keisha only has half an ear and a little bobbed tail. We think she lost them to the lions next door.   All over this compound the bears and big cats shared common walls of a material never witnessed by Big Cat Rescuers for housing big cats. The openings in the metal cattle panels were 8 inches wide and 6 inches high. It is incomprehensible that no human ever lost their life or limbs working so close to such dangerous wild animals, with nothing to prevent the animals from reaching the full length of their arms out to grab the passerby.   In the 2009 video Jackie Wisniewski reaches her arm, all the way up to her armpit, to pet the cats and talks about how her staff and volunteers have to earn the cat's trust to pet them this way, but then admits that the cats are always looking for a way to pull you into the cage.   In some places a new barricade fence had been erected (where previously there had been none) and it was so tight against the cage that there was NO safe way to walk around the enclosure. All of the animals had shared walls which must have led to some intensive fights and quite possibly the deaths of animals along the way. No one seemed to know exactly when or how Sacha the tigress had died.   The only cage to have a double wall (one with a space of about 3 feet between the walls) was the one between Keisha and 2 lionesses. Keisha and the lionesses both had common walls with Zeus, but it would appear that after Keisha lost her ear and tail, someone finally installed a double wall between the lions and Keisha. That one small measure has probably saved her life, but her tail healed in such a scarred and unusual way that it's doubtful she had a vet attend to her wounds.  In the video you can see that her tail was missing as far back as 2009.   As each of the cats were loaded into their transport wagons they were rolled up into Loving Friend's transport vehicle where they probably experienced air conditioning for the first time ever. Even though they loaded quite easily, they were all stressed out by the move and the chaos of the day, so the lower temp helped take some of the edge off. Within minutes Kimba was sound asleep in the deep, soft hay.   If anyone wouldn't survive this trip, it would be Kimba. She just had so little spirit left in her. I checked on her several times to be sure she was still breathing, and seemed blissfully asleep.  Update:  17 Days later we had to euthanize Kimba because she could not recover from the ailments brought on by being kept in such filth and starved.  More here:  http://bigcatrescue.org/euthanize-tiger/   Zeus gulped down water before laying down in his big fluffy hay bed. These cats, like so many others across the country, were kept on rocks. There was no place for them to feel the soft earth, nor roll in the grass, nor enjoy the shade of trees or bushes. The only shade, or escape from the sharp edged rocks, was in their smelly dens and on a small table in each cage, but these cats didn't look fit enough to jump up onto them. Zeus had been a big and powerful male tiger at some point in his life, but now you could see the remains of his wasted muscles and protrusion of his ribs and hips.   Big Cat Rescuers loaded tigers for 2 hours and the officer in charge commented that we worked together like a well oiled machine. Despite the rush to load the tigers and move out of the way for the next rescue group, there were some heart breaking moments. The worst for cat lovers was the owner said her cat had died, so she had thrown the cat into the cage that housed the 4 youngest tigers, who appear to have been born at JnK in 2004 and were probably considered favorites.   As hungry as those tigers must have been; something must have registered in their heads that this was just too awful to consider. Time may have finally caused them to overcome their disgust at being fed another cat, had they not been rescued today, so the bloated body of the domestic cat laid there in a haze of flies.   As soon as the tigers were all loaded and their transport cages were strapped down for the 22 hour trip, Big Cat Rescuers and JT and Laura Taylor of Loving Friends were on their way back to Tampa.   The cost of the transport and rescue was approximately $7,000, but that is just the beginning. Getting these tigers back on the road to health will mean vet care, and specialists for the eyes. It means a lot of high quality food, vitamins, joint supplements and probably a good deal of pain management. Just one healthy tiger costs Big Cat Rescue $10,000 per year, just for food and vet care and these neglected tigers will need much more intensive care. Even though they are safe and will never go hungry again, it is only because people like you will open your hearts to these precious creatures. Please let them know that you are there for them, for now and forever, with a monthly gift of whatever you can afford.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Have you ever wanted to bond with lions and tigers and bears? Becca Miceli is the Chief Officer of Science and Welfare, otherwise known as the veterinary technician, at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. From an early age she has had a fascination towards ‘animals that can eat her’, and now works in the sanctuaries 720 acres, with 532 animals ranging from tigers to grizzly bears and lynx. Taking care of carnivorous animals and giving them the freedom to choose how they want to live the rest of their lives after coming from suboptimal and even unthinkable captivity is Becca’s passion. By treating each animal as an individual, respecting their story and learning the unique needs of each animal she treats, Becca helps these mistreated animals find a new home and a new way of living. Join us as we have a look into the stories of some of the animals that Becca takes care of on a daily basis and gain a glimpse of what life is like working with some of the world’s most majestic and frightening creatures. By educating the public on an animals empathy, seeing things from a different point of view and making the world a better place on behalf of the animals who do not have a voice, Becca and the Wildlife Animal Sanctuary are giving animals the best life possible while changing the way we think about the world. Have you ever visited a carnivorous animal sanctuary? I get to impact their lives daily.” (23:43) “These animals forgive on a daily basis things that they shouldn’t, how can I not look at the world the same way?” (25:19) “I grow every day, I learn something new, I learn a new way to approach something, I get to see them flourish and that all makes it worth it, even on the bad days.” (35:08) “We all have that animal I think where you look in their eyes and you say ‘I will make it through another day because I need to help you’.” (35:28)   Links Wildlife Animal Sanctuary   Enjoying these stories?
