John Wesley Hardin was the son of a Methodist minister, but it didn't seem to rub off on him. Born in 1853, he became a notorious outlaw of the wild west (or maybe more correctly a serial killer in folk hero disguise). Killing a man when he was 14, he was finally sentenced to jail in 1877 having claimed to have killed 42 men, though only 27 were verified. Somehow he was released from prison and pardoned in 1894, promptly passing the bar exam and gaining the right to practice law before killing a man for a $5 bet and then being killed himself in a saloon dispute.

Located in Turner, Oregon, just south of Salem, it is easily accesible on I-5. I will get my name engraved on the plaque at The Challenge of Mondor some day. Or maybe buy a brick to support them- go to their website to check that out. The Lodge at Hot Lake Springs was built at the site of a hot spring called "Ea -Kesh-Pa", originally used by the Nez Perce who lived there. It first became a lodge in 1906. It became a sanitorium, where visitors came for its healing mineral waters, and was a tourist destination for famous and regular folks alike, even visitors like Wild Bill Hickock. After it partially burned, it was only abe to use about a third of the rooms, and so gradually fell into disuse. After short stints as nusing training facilities and a nursing home, it was bought for use as a restauraunt/night club and a bath house, and then was closed due to vandalism and abandonment. It was redone in the 2000's by the Manuel family, and was reopened as a bed and breakfast, with a bronze foundry, musum and spa. It was bought by the Grande Hot Springs RV resort next, and is open now for day use and to stay. You'll have to stay there to find out the haunted part for yourself! Photos of these two will be on @j_b_chambers on Instagram. As always , the best way to help the show is to rate and review where you are listening. It seems we've unintentionally given them a regional twist. We apologize in advance for the confusion and the laughter it may cause. Now, let's get into the supernatural stories, shall we? Chelle will be sharing a haunting tale from Virginia, connected to none other than Lynyrd Skynyrd. This spooky encounter will make you question if ghosts have a taste for Southern rock!Meanwhile, Laylla will be whisking us away to the haunted city of Deadwood in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Wild Bill Hickock - ep004 An Outlaws Revenge
As the United States expanded across the Mississippi River, mail delivery proved to be a challenge. Mail carried by stagecoach or steamship took over a month to get to California. For a time, there was the Pony Express, which boasted famous riders like Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickock, that could carry mail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California in only ten days. A lesser-known Pony Express route traversed Dakota Territory, but the first winter put an end to it. The southern route didn't last much longer, running from April, 1860 to October, 1861.
"Perhaps I may yet die with my boots on." Wild Bill Hickock said that. I didn't know him personally, but my guess is that he meant something kinda like, if he were blessed enough in life he would leave this earthly place someday, doing what he loved to do, living the way he loved to live. It just might be a charge for us all. Grab those boots, y'all. My guests on this episode are brothers and I do know them. I knew them in HIghschool, and only well enough to know that they were good guys. And good guys they were and good men they are. Matt introduces Andrew to 'Calamity Jane' starring Doris Day: Deadwood, Dakota Territory, is largely the abode of men, where Indian scout Calamity Jane is as hard-riding, boastful, and handy with a gun as any; quite an overpowering personality. But the army lieutenant she favours doesn't really appreciate her finer qualities. One of Jane's boasts brings her to Chicago to recruit an actress for the Golden Garter stage. Arrived, the lady in question appears (at first) to be a more feminine rival for the favours of Jane's male friends... including her friendly enemy Wild Bill Hickock.

Welcome to a special episode of "Moving at the Speed of Creativity," recorded from the Mt Moriah cemetery in Deadwood, South Dakota on June 26, 2021. Members of our family went on the "Boot Hill Tours Historical Tour of Deadwood," and I audio recorded the culminating portion at the graveside of both Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. These real people from the "wild west days" of the late 19th century were mythologized by dimestore novelists and journalists, who used the outlines of their characters to weave wild (and sometimes sordid) tales of conflict, romance, adventure, and violence. Our tour guide, Joe Williams, is a local educator and school administrator who has done extensive historical research about the area of Deadwood and specifically the lives of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. In his narration, he dispels some of the myths surrounding these two characters and sheds light on their lives and deeds. Check out the podcast shownotes for related links to this tour and area.

In this Studios Year by Year episode, 1936 begins with Paramount, and we take a look at two movies about gun-running that star Gary Cooper, but have little else in common (despite using the same cinematographer). We don't find much to love about Cecil B. DeMille's tribute to Wild West mythology, The Plainsman, starring Gary Cooper as an insufficiently hirsute Wild Bill Hickock and Jean Arthur as a whip-happy Calamity Jane; but Dave waxes enthusiastic about Lewis Milestone's The General Died at Dawn, an off-kilter Popular Front movie that's half-Hitchcock espionage romance, half-poetic realist manifesto. You know it’s wonderful, and we know you’re wonderful too. Time Codes: 0h 01m 00s: THE PLAINSMAN (dir. Cecil DeMille) 0h 40m 23s: THE GENERAL DIED AT DAWN (dir. In the 1870's, the town of Garnett Kansas was a crossroads of a new world. Settlers, cowboys, criminals and the righteous all passed through this now-forgotten town. Some notable characters of the day included Wyatt Erp, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickock, Buffalo Bill Cody, Belle Star, Jesse James and many others have all stayed at what was the Garnett House Hotel. Screams in the night have been heard on EVP recording was taken at the Haunted Garnett House. One of the most disturbing elements of these screams is that they appear to come from a child. Who this child is, and what this child need remains to be known. However, these screams are far from a one-time occurrence. Called in on a job to stop rustlers, the gun shooting, horse racing chases begin for our heroes. They manage to catch up to Booker, one of the known rustlers. Will he be any help in rounding up the rest of the gang? Blazing guns convince his crew of cow hands to drop theirs, but all Bill does is ruffle their feathers and make enemies. What will Bill and Jingles learn at the Cattleman's Association? Jingles knows that Booker is as guilty as a coyote in a chicken coop, but the suspicious rancher gloats when his clean record is discovered. Meanwhile back at the ranch...
The robberies of shipments of gold have been going on way too long, and that horny toad of a bandit has to be caught. Bill and Jingles encounter an odd, soft spoken stranger, then are mistaken by the posse as the horny toad bandits. When Bill learns why he and Jingles are thought to be the bandits, they go to confront their little stranger from earlier. After an explosion, Bill and Jingles are trapped in a mine, and face death. Townsfolk, and miners alike all turn to, and get busy digging our heros out of the mine. Digging until they're exhausted, the townsfolk take heart
Leaving the flatland of Arizona, Bill and Jingles look forward to the town life in North Dakota. The first order of business in civilization is to break up a fistfight. The hotel owner tells his lawmen friends about shady doings in selling cattle to market. With only 8 more days to Christmas, those growing boys and girls on Santa's nice list will be sure to want some of those sugary sponsor products to add to their stockings. Going undercover, Jingles poses as a riverboat man who promises passage for the scheming bad guys. The plan to sell cattle in St Louis is reported to Bill.

Tread Perilously continues its month on the frontier with a visit to Deadwood to witness an episode called "The Trial of Jack McCall." With the body of Wild Bill Hickock lying in state and Al Swearengen fearing the arrival of U.S. law, the camp of Deadwood convenes its own court to try Wild Bill's murder, Jack McCall. But this being Deadwood, everyone has their own reasons for seeing this sort of frontier justice to the end. Will it cause a Mr. Bullock to lose his cool? Will it make the pox outbreak which threatens the town worse? And will anyone realize E.B Farnum is not to be trusted? Erik finally watches his first episode of Deadwood and begins to analyze it as a Libertarian power fantasy. Both he and Justin discuss the powerhouse casting throughout the episode -- from stars like Timothy Olyphant to show favorite Garret Dillahunt. Jango Fett's stolen valor comes into question. Erik suggests Jeffrey Jones should be digitally replaced by Christopher Plummer. He also tries to deal with some of the culturally insensitive words used on Deadwood. Justin sings the praises of Brad Dourif. Tombstone comes up because of course it does and Erik reveals his belief that most non-European languages' term for "European" is "White Devil."

Calamity Jane is without question one of the most iconic figures in Old West history. She's been portrayed innumerable times in film and television, most recently in the HBO series Deadwood as Wild Bill Hickock's loyal buckskin-wearing friend and sidekick. Her reputation proceeded her wherever she went, as a master bullwhacker, an excessive drinker, a riveting storyteller, and as a woman who found herself in some of the most pivotal moments in American western history. But how much of her larger-than-life personality was based on fact, and how much was exaggerated? My guest, Linda Jucovy, helps separate fact from fiction in this episode of Most Notorious. She is the author of "Searching for Calamity: The Life and Times of Calamity Jane". Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When many of us think about Old West gunfighters, our minds turn to men like Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, and Billy the Kid. But there were others equally as compelling, including the two that are the subject of my guest G.R. Williamson's recent book, called "Texas Pistoleers: The True Story of Ben Thompson and King Fisher". Thompson and Fisher each had their own unique and violent lives, but happened to be together when they were shot to death at the infamous Vaudeville Theater Ambush in San Antonio, Texas. That story is told, along with tales of their gunfights and their fascinating encounters with famous western figures (and killers) like Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickock, Bat Masterson and John Wesley Hardin.

Enjoy Rick's interview with Jim DeFelice and they talk about his laterest book about the Pony Express. American Sniper co-author Jim DeFelice celebrates the legends, separates fact from fiction, and probes the darker side of the Pony Express in his new book, WEST LIKE LIGHTNING: The Brief, Legendary Ride of the Pony Express. The Pony Express tied America together from the Mississippi River to California. It was the Internet - and the Space Shuttle - of its time. Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody were associated with it. Americans from Missouri to California depended on it for news and mail. It was also an audacious get-rich quick scheme - an attempt to monopolize freight, transportation, and financial services through half the country. It involved a swindle of hundreds of thousands of dollars, bribes to government officials, and the occasional loss of life, an ear or other body part. Congressmen and at least one shady banker got rich off it, albeit illegally. The only thing standing in its way were 1,500 miles of desert, impassible mountains, hostile Indians, sociopathic killers and religious fanatics. Had the scheme behind it succeeded, the credit card we carry today, would have a Pony logo on it. We’d be making mortgage payments to the Pony Bank. Instead, those honors go to its chief rivals: American Express and Wells Fargo. WEST LIKE LIGHTNING retraces the Pony Express trail, figuratively and literally, from St. Joseph, Missouri, to San Francisco, California, with myriad stops in between to talk about Western expansion, Native Americans, the effects of gold and silver rushes, Mormons, railroads, the telegraph, and the bloody conflict that tore the nation apart even before the cannons fired on Fort Sumter. About the author: Jim DeFelice is the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper, the New York Timesbestsellers American Wife and Code Name: Johnny Walker, Omar Bradley: General at War. He has also written a number of acclaimed thrillers, including the Dreamland series with Dale Brown.

The storylines for Wild Bill Hikock are anything but challenging. The basic plot is usually along the lines of Hickock and his sidekick, Jingles, blundering into trouble, fighting their way out of it somehow, and then riding off into the sunset in readiness for next weeks trials and tribulations. James Butler Hickok (May 27, 1837 – August 2, 1876), better known as Wild Bill Hickok, was a legendary figure in the American Wild West. He is perhaps the best known figure from that era. After fighting in the Union army during the American Civil War, he became a legendary army scout, and later, lawman and gunfighter. Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois on May 27, 1837. He left his father's farm in 1855 to be a stage coach driver on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. His gunfighting skills led to his nickname. James Butler Hickock (1837–1876)
