The project also offers a possible new, dependable, and environmentally friendly way to provide income for conservation around the world. He said, "If we don't create the necessary economic incentives to conserve wildlife, it won't happen.” Current conservation income comes mainly from hunting and people visiting the protected areas. He said these current ways harmed animals, their habitats, or were largely undependable during the pandemic.他说:“如果我们不产生必要的经济激励措施来保护野生动植物,那将不会发生。” 当前的保护收入主要来自狩猎和参观保护区的人们。 他说,这些当前的方式伤害了动物,它们的栖息地,或者在大流行期间基本上是不可依赖的。He said, "We're going to have to find a solution which allows people at home to conserve nature in the wild."他说:“我们将不得不找到一种解决方案,使人们可以在家中保护大自然。”Jurie Moolman is the owner of the Djuma Game Reserve. He added that organizations like WildEarth and the NFT program allow them to continue to share Djuma with people everywhere, while also keeping the habitat safe from harm.他说,该保护区正试图减少其对地球的有害影响。 他补充说,像Wildearth和NFT计划这样的组织使他们能够继续与各地的人们共享Djuma,同时还可以使栖息地免受伤害。The NFTs will however need to be continuously resold for them to become a dependable source of income for the reserves. Each time an NFT is resold, a percentage of that sale will go to the reserve. It is unknown if there will be a demand for this.但是,NFT将需要连续转售,以使其成为储备金的可靠收入来源。 每次转售NFT时,该销售的百分比都将用于预备役。 未知是否有需求。Even with this, Wallington is looking to expand. He hopes to sign up reserves in the country's south. The homes of flightless birds called penguins and Kenya's large reserve called the Maasai Mara are both in the south.即使这样,沃灵顿仍在寻求扩展。 他希望在该国南部签署储备。 无飞行的鸟类的房屋称为企鹅和肯尼亚的大型保护区,称为Maasai Mara,都在南部。He said, "We've got a plan to scale this, in our roadmap, to all conservation areas around the world.”

Every year, the great migration sees hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and antelopes migrate from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, in search of water and juicy grass. But rising temperatures and unpredictable weather are changing this epic animal journey dramatically. It's the same for great white sharks, which are being spotted in areas where they'd never normally live.Tanzanian safari guide Neema Amos takes us into the Serengeti to explain why the wildebeest migration is so important. Today's bonus episode is a real treat, because we're going on safari! Whether you've dreamt of spotting the Big Five - lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo - or exploring the more hidden gems of the wild, there's so much to uncover. And what better way to do it than with one of the world's top wildlife filmmakers, making his return to the podcast - it's Gordon Buchanan.A safari is more than just a holiday—it's a journey into nature, where you can see some of the planet's most awe-inspiring animals up close, in their natural habitats. When we think of safaris, some of the most iconic destinations immediately come to mind. There's Kenya's Maasai Mara, famous for its open savannahs and incredible amount of wildlife. It's in Kenya that you can witness one of nature's most jaw-dropping spectacles—the Great Migration, when every year typically between July and October, over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make a perilous journey from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Mara in Kenya, searching for fresh grazing lands. It's the perfect time to witness dramatic river crossings and heart-stopping predator-prey interactions. In Tanzania, the Serengeti offers a similar view, with endless plains stretching to the horizon, while Botswana's Okavango Delta gives you a different kind of safari experience, with its winding waterways and lush landscapes where you can spot animals like hippos and crocodiles. But as Gordon and I discuss on the episode today, you don't need to go to Africa to enjoy an incredible safari. Sri Lanka's Yala National Park is a fantastic place to see leopards, elephants, and even sloth bears—Gordon has had some great encounters there. In India, you can track the majestic Bengal tiger through dense jungles, and in Madagascar, you'll find unique species like lemurs and chameleons. And don't forget other African countries like Namibia, Zambia, and even beyond to South America's Pantanal in Brazil, where jaguars are the stars of the show. The great thing about safaris is that they can be tailored to all kinds of budgets. In South Africa, for instance, Kruger National Park has everything from luxury lodges to more affordable self-drive options, where you can explore at your own pace. In Kenya, you can choose between high-end tented camps or simpler, yet comfortable lodges. So, whether you're after a five-star experience or a more back-to-nature adventure, there's something out there for everyone.Gordon's here to share his expert tips on where to go and what to see on safari, as well as some unforgettable moments from his travels. Plus, I'm really excited because he's also going to tell us all about his latest project, the fantastic BBC show Big Cats 24-7. This is the second largest mammal migration on our planet. (The first is bats.) The zebras and wildebeest cross the rivers, full of crocodiles, and these “crossings” are as dramatic as it gets. It also gets awfully dramatic on the river banks as many, frankly way too many, tourist vehicles gather to watch. In the latest episode of the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast, host Angela Nicholson engages with the esteemed wildlife photographer and fundraiser Margot Raggett. A figure synonymous with passion and purpose, Margot has carved a niche in wildlife conservation through her photographic prowess and the founding of the groundbreaking 'Remembering Wildlife' book series. These books not only celebrate the artistry of numerous wildlife photographers but also have raised over a million pounds for conservation efforts worldwide.Margot's journey in photography is both inspirational and deeply personal. Starting with her initial foray into photography during a safari in the Maasai Mara, she recalls purchasing her first DSLR camera, a decision spurred by a last-minute realisation that she was expected to have one for the safari. Her narrative weaves through the pivotal moments of her career, highlighting her transformation from a corporate PR professional to a dedicated wildlife conservationist. This transformation was catalysed by an encounter with the harsh realities of elephant poaching, driving her to use her skills and network to make a tangible difference in the world.During the podcast, Margot discusses the intricate balance required between capturing the raw beauty of nature and respecting the subject in wildlife photography. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 7th of February, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in 1 Peter 5:8-9: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith,…” We really need to understand something. The devil is a coward, a bully, and a liar, and he is a thief. His neck was broken on the cross of Calvary when Jesus died, and He said, “It is finished.” He meant it. But the devil tells us lies and if we do not arm ourselves with faith and walk closely with the Lord, he will destroy us by his lies and his accusations. He is like the lion who waits for the stragglers. If you look at the Maasai Mara and the great migrations of the wildebeest. Tens of thousands of them follow after the new grass, and who goes with them? Prides of lions. Those lions will never enter the middle of a herd of wildebeest or buffalo because they know they will be killed. They hang around the outside, waiting for the stragglers, for those that are lame, sick, or young and they pick them off.“Greater is He who is within you that he that is in the world.”1 John 4:4We need to stand together, and understand that we are in Christ. Revelation 12:11: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” The devil cannot touch you if you are walking closely with the Lord and if you are walking closely with the brethren. That scripture goes on to say that the same sufferings that you are going through are experienced by the brotherhood in the world. You are not alone. You see, the devil tries to isolate you, and then he tells you you will never make it. It is a lie from the pit of hell. We need to walk together and walk by faith. We need to challenge the devil head-on with the Word of God, and he will back off. Have a wonderful day.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode is the second in the Sacred Nature Series, and it discusses the topic of 'Becoming Conservationists'. A trip down memory lane with Jonathan and Angie, from growing up immersed in Nature - Angie in Tanzania and Jonathan on a farm in the UK - to their shared love of wildlife, photography and art. They met and married in the Maasai Mara in 1992, kindred spirits, with Angie giving structure and clarity to their path, whether what their next project might be - a CD Rom on an African Safari, revising their Safari Guide Books to East African Animals and Birds, or working on television series - they have never looked back, always on the go, living life to the full, whether at home in Nairobi or photographing a world beyond reality: Antarctica. There were halcyon days on safari filming Big Cat Diary for weeks at a time, with Jonathan as co-presenter and Angie as an ace big cat spotter and production stills photographer. Angie has always loved books and dreamed of one day seeing their work writ large in a portfolio book of their own making. That dream was realised with their two award winning titles of Sacred Nature published by HPH Publishes in South Africa. They in turn led to them founding the non-profit Sacred Nature Initiative based on three pillars: Inspire, Educate, Conserve. This is the fascinating and inspiring story of their journey to Becoming Conservationists.  This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience. The Big Cat People Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2023 28:02

Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode is the first in the Sacred Nature Series, and it centers around the concept of 'Safari Etiquette'. The advent of wildlife tourism to Parks and Reserves around the world has been a mixed blessing. It helps to generate much needed foreign currency for the local economy. Some of this revenue goes towards managing protected areas and helping local communities living with wildlife to meet their development needs. Getting the right balance between the financial benefits of tourism and the sanctity of the natural environment, and wellbeing of local communities and wildlife, is no easy matter and needs to constantly be monitored. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem in Kenya. The overdevelopment of tourism facilities in and around the Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) has resulted in swarms of vehicles crisscrossing the landscape in search of predator sightings, leading to scenes of utter chaos as reported recently in a hard hitting article in the New York Times entitled, The Cheetahs Made a Kill. Then the Safari Trucks Swarmed In (4 January, 2023). How can we help? The Sacred Nature Initiative, founded by Jonathan and Angela in 2021, is currently supporting Narok County Government's One-Mara Brand initiative. This takes an ecosystem approach in partnership with stakeholders, such as the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancy Association, to help safeguard the welfare of local communities and wellbeing of protected areas, while developing sustainable and attractive tourism products. Embedding a strong culture of good practice - a Safari Etiquette - would help elevate the safari experience we want to offer visitors to new standards of excellence. In doing so it would go a long way to turning the dream of having the Greater Mara Ecosystem declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site into a reality. This accolade has to be earned. In this podcast Jonathan explains the reasoning behind the Safari Etiquette and why it is so important for all stakeholders to come together to help salvage the reputation of the Maasai Mara. This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience. Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode is called '2005: Honey and Toto', and it is the seventh episode in our ten part series named Big Cat Diary Uncut. Join us in this episode as we go back in time to the year 2005. One of the things that defined Big Cat was that our Producers and Executives at the BBC Natural History Unit were always looking for innovations, whether discussing programme style and structure with their counterparts in the Entertainment division at the BBC and Animal Planet, or looking for other ways to bring great production values to the series. We benefit from collaborating with the Planet Earth team during their visit to the Maasai Mara to film some helicopter aerials to give a heightened sense of scale to the landscape and our place in it, just a tiny vehicle marooned in the enormity of the savanna. However, this series would not linger on in the audience's memories for years to come due to the stunning visuals. It would forever be remembered for a tiny cheetah cub that Jonathan names Toto - meaning “child" or “little one” in Swahili. The three-month-old male cub is the only survivor of Honey's third litter. Jonathan sets the reality of the scene for viewers when he says, “I will be amazed if Toto survives.” The series ends on a sorrowful note. After the crew had returned to the UK, Simon and his wife Marguerite stayed on to film cheetahs for Planet Earth and discovered Honey alone a few days later. I recorded a last line of commentary while back at the Natural History Unit in Bristol, and remember being conflicted by the need to not simply speak my truth rather than, it seemed to me, struggle to avoid acknowledging the inevitable. Toto had died, and while we could not be certain what the circumstances had been, most likely it would have been lions or hyenas that killed him. This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience. The roles are reversed today. When my very dear friend, Gina Clifford, returned to Africa for her third visit, I planned to interview her about trekking for gorillas in Uganda. Many Tin Trunk clients do it there and in Rwanda and I think it's time we hear from them on just what makes this one of the most sought-after and soul-altering journeys on our planet. Alas, for another time. For Gina convinced me to let her interview me as a result of the many conversations we had about Africa, the animals, the people, and what the future holds as we went around Africa: trekking in that lush Bwindi forest, flying to the Maasai Mara and Northern Kenya  in my plane 5Y-BAD, and boating up the Luangwa river in Zambia.  It seems this is meant to be – a moment of reflection - on my life, my commitments and how I want to walk the planet - as well as the important role I see my travel business, Tin Trunk Safari , plays in all of this.  Just a few days after this Zambia trip, I was invited to be interviewed on Global Adventures, a tv programme that you can watch on you tube. It was my first television appearance and the interviewers focused on how travel transforms us and how my life has led to designing the kinds of trips in Africa that aim to do just that for our clients.  You can watch this on  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlJLac8RRJgInstagram @tin trunk safari. I invite you to share in this retrospective – and introspective – moment by watching the the show and listening to this interview. Gina and I spoke from her tent looking over the river from our bush camp, Kakuli, in the South Luangwa. You might remember my interview a while back with Abraham Banda, our guide from Time and Tide. In that interview, I said I wanted to come back and experience the South Luangwa in Zambia during the off-season, when the river has swelled so much you can boat through ancient forests of Ebony trees.  And so we did.  Enjoy our chat.www.tintrunksafari.com Instagram: @tintrunksafari

Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We've have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode is a continuation of our ten part series named 'Our Story: Becoming the Big Cat People'. This episode is named, 'From Africa to Antarctica.' Opportunity beckons in 1989! I'm asked to co-present Africa Watch with Julian Pettifer, the first live outside broadcast from the Maasai Mara produced by the BBC/Discovery Channel. For ten days we beamed breathtaking images around the world, starring the Marsh Pride and the great migration. Africa Watch proves a great success. There is talk of the BBC finding a TV series for me to present, but not yet. During filming I meet Mitsuaki Iwago the legendary wildlife photographer who tells me to be more adventurous with my own photography. 1991 hails the beginning of our love affair with Antarctica, a land beyond reality, that would keep Angela and myself enthralled to this day. Our annual expeditions aboard Abercrombie and Kent's Little Red Ship, brought to life by tales of the heroic age of exploration when Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton battled the elements to be first to the South Pole, opened a whole new chapter in our lives “Out of Africa”. En route, via South America, we go in search of Angela's Grandfather Hugo Salman Backhouse who bred polo ponies on an estancia in Cordoba, Argentina, where Angela's mother Joy and Uncle Jonny were born and home schooled. Hugo, forever the charismatic adventurer, captained the Argentine Polo Team in 1936, spied for Britain in both World Wars, and rode with Laurence of Arabia. Back in Africa we remember some close encounters with nature, from a 4.5 meter long python curled up under our son David's cot, to a bull elephant named Tyson who relished trashing the BBC's camera equipment while filming Elephant Diaries in Tsavo National Park. Yet one of our most frightening misadventures is not in Africa. A meeting on foot with a bull Hooker's Sea Lion on the remote Campbell Island off New Zealand during our semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica aboard Kapitan Khlebnikov proves a salutary tale. With a warning we would all do well to heed. This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience. Today's episode is a continuation of our ten part series named 'Our Story: Becoming the Big Cat People'. This episode is named, "Painted Wolves and The Great Migration." By now I have written books on lions and leopards and spent nearly ten years living in the Maasai Mara. I decide to travel south to the great Serengeti National Park in Tanzania that borders the Mara to the south. I live in my vehicle for weeks at a time over the next three years as I gather material on the Painted Wolves - the African wild dogs, the most social of all the large carnivores in complete contrast to the solitary leopards I had been focusing on. I become one with the pack, living at the den where their puppies are hidden, rising when they do, sleeping in my car wherever they bed down for the night. I find solitude among the vastness of the endless plains to seek answers to the mental health issues that have cast a shadow over my life since childhood. I witness the extent of the bush meat trade - the poaching that kills tens of thousands of animals that are snared, speared, trapped or shot each year. I complete books on both the wild dogs and the great migration, meet Prince Charles (now King Charles III), and two of my childhood heroes Sir Peter Scott and David Attenborough who endorse my work. In 1987 I win the Overall Award in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition with one of my wild dog photographs and begin to feel that I am stepping out of my father's giant shadow. Welcome to The Big Cat People podcast! We're Jonathan and Angela Scott, award-winning wildlife photographers, authors and conservationists. We've have made our name documenting the lives of lions, leopards and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Today's episode will be the third in a ten part series named 'Our Story: Becoming the Big Cat People'. This episode is named 'Wild Kingdom'. I reflect on two pivotal events that occurred in early 1977 just after I had come to live at Mara River Camp - Kenya banned trophy hunting and the sale of all wildlife products, and the President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere, closed the border with Kenya that did not reopen until 1983. This would see the Maasai Mara become the jewel in Kenya's tourism industry, leading to the proliferation of camps and lodges that today has reached crisis point. There are now 200 tourism facilities in and around the Reserve. People often ask how I came to be a television presenter. It wasn't to become famous. It was because I was doing something that people found interesting; I was passionate about wildlife and spent every minute I could in the company of the lions, leopards and cheetahs that I came to know as individuals, each with their own character. I read everything I could about animal behaviour, followed the work of the scientists and contributed my own findings to their work wherever possible. Television sought me out because - in the simplest terms - I knew what I was talking about and could communicate easily with the general public. There is nothing like passion and enthusiasm allied to knowledge. I was soon to learn that filming wildlife had its dark side. My experiences working with the long running American TV show Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom opened my eyes to the tendency of some publishers and film makers to portray a false impression of untamed wilderness, and how the use of captive animals and set-up scenes were once the industry standard. This episode is named 'The Marsh Lions'. After two years in Botswana I travel overland back to Kenya and meet up with an old friend from my university days, Paul Pavlides. Paul introduces me to Jock Anderson who manages Mara River Camp nestled along the Mara River just outside the boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. In January 1977 I head for the Mara to realise my dream of living among Africa's spectacular wild creatures: after all the Mara is a predator's paradise. The deal is no pay but free board and lodging and the chance to learn to become a safari guide accompanying visitors on daily game drives. I am overjoyed at this opportunity. My mentor is a safari guide called Joseph Rotich, known to one and all as Bwana Chui - Mr Leopard in Swahili - due to his uncanny ability to find the most elusive of all the big cats. Joseph teaches me how to see - how to read the signs that can reveal where a predator might be hiding. He introduces me to the pride of lions that I later name the Marsh Lions and I begin to record every detail of their lives in notebooks filled with drawings and photographs. In 1982, five years after coming to live in the Maasai Mara, The Marsh Lions (1982) is published, co-authored with the journalist Brian Jackman, illustrated with my pen and ink drawings and photographs and based on events recorded in my diaries. I make my first appearance on television when I am featured on Nature Watch hosted by Julian Pettifer. The Marsh Pride make headlines in the film Ambush at Maasai Mara in the series Wildlife on One for the BBC. This heralds the beginning of a forty year relationship with the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol. This podcast series is a continuing effort to educate and inspire our audience. Twenty years ago, Maasai leader Meitamei Olol Dapash snuck across the Kenya-Tanzania border to report on what the Otterlo Business Corporation was doing. In today's podcast he explains what he saw then: The company was capturing animals, sending them to zoos, and starting a trophy-hunting operation. And now, two decades later, this company wants to expand its business into more land. This has led to attempts by Tanzania to violently evict Maasai communities from their ancestral land. Last week, I wrote about this ongoing crisis. Here, Meitamei gives a firsthand account of arriving on the scene in June after police attacked Maasai communities. Many people were seriously injured and had to run for their lives. And he describes the humanitarian aid effort. Meitamei is the director of the Dopoi Center located in the Maasai Mara in Kenya and one of the founders of the Institute for Maasai Education, Research, and Conservation. Meitamei has dedicated his life to working for Maasai culture and land rights. His mother was born in Tanzania, across the colonial border, as he calls it. As Meitamei describes, the Maasai are a “transborder” community, and the international boundary itself was and still is an imposition by European powers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/border-chronicle/support

Devin: What is your superpower?Filip: I’ve always been a dreamer. I’ve always been a visionary, always been someone who has had big ambitions and grand ambitions. I have become extremely focused on breaking things down, taking a big vision and saying, OK, so we’re going to be the biggest electric vehicle supplier on the African continent, perhaps for the full global south. How does that break down to what I do today and tomorrow?Motivated by a genuine passion for reversing climate change, Filip Lövström founded and leads Opibus, now Africa’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. Based in Kenya, he aspires to build buses, other commercial vehicles and electric motorcycles for the global south.Vehicle emissions in Sub-Saharan Africa represent a bigger problem than in some other areas. “This region is left with second-hand trucks or vehicles that have very low emission standards,” the Swede says. “So not only is it internal combustion engines, it’s quite poor internal combustion engines as well.”“Making these vehicles electric by either conversions or building new ones has a massive impact for the emissions that we are seeing here for both the local emissions in the cities, as well as the greenhouse gas emissions impacting the globe,” he says.Notably, Filip says, Kenya has an overproduction of energy, the vast majority of which comes from renewable sources. “Electric vehicles become increasingly important because we should make use of that energy,” he adds.“Our first priority from day one when we got here was to actually get vehicles out on the roads,” Filip says. He started by converting safari vehicles to electric because his customers’ customers value nature and want to see their African vacation as doing no harm. “They are extremely motivated to move away from fossil fuel vehicles.”Now, Opibus is converting buses to operate on electricity. Filip has a clear strategy for bus conversions: provide an ROI to the customer. This goal requires keeping the capital costs down.Opibus cuts costs by customizing buses to the routes they serve and pairing them with fast charging stations. “We’re deploying the fastest chargers on the African continent as far as we are aware, and we minimize the battery packs,” he says.“We provide them with a bus that can take them about 120-130 kilometers. And then we put charging stations in each end so we can minimize the raw material that’s used for batteries,” Felip says. “But they charge at every end and top up the batteries with just enough to bring it back up to 100 percent.”The safari vehicles work similarly, with regular routes. There are other commercial opportunities Filip eyes. “We started out in the safari market, but there is a big market with, for example, the mining industry with all kinds of utility vehicles where you are carrying heavy loads, or you’re driving in rough terrains, which is quite similar to a safari vehicle that jumps around Maasai Mara filled with tourists.”What has Filip excited the most is the electric motorcycles. “The sheer amount of motorbikes is, I mean, I’m not a native English speaker, but I would definitely say bonkers.”To start, Opibus is targeting riders who use their bikes for work. “Approximately 5 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa earn the majority of their daily income from riding motorbikes.”Filip says Opibus expects to scale the motorbike business quickly, allowing it to compete directly with conventional motorbikes on price with the advantage of lower operating costs. “You say either, ‘I’m going to spend $1,300 on a petrol bike and then spend $4 or $5 per day on fuel,’ or ‘I’m going to spend $1,300 on an electric motorbike. I’m going to spend $2 on electricity for charging it,’” he says.Opibus is moving deliberately toward producing the motorbikes to be sure everything works. “We’re targeting to deploy a few thousand motorbikes [in 2022] and then a few tens of thousands of motorbikes the year after that in 2023, and then after that, we want to make sure that we can scale as quickly as possible up to a couple of hundred thousand of motorbikes by the end of this decade,” Filip says.“We started out with the first two and a half years of this business completely bootstrapped without any kind of equity investment,” Felip says. Late last year, the company announced a $7.5 million financing rounded structured as $2.5 million in grant funding and the balance in equity. Felip describes it as the “biggest round of financing for electric mobility in sub-Saharan Africa.”He sees this as the beginning of a process required for scaling the business. “If we actually want to seriously deploy these solutions, we need to put a lot more money to work. So we are going to we’re going to raise a few more rounds.”Because the business is already generating revenue from safari vehicles and buses, he feels less pressure on fundraising. “I don’t need the fundraising to survive. I need the fundraising to scale up.” He anticipates raising “a few more rounds.”Filip describes his superpower as the ability to break down a dream or vision into actionable steps; I’ll call it “action-oriented vision.”Superpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. To support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. How to Develop Action-Oriented Vision As a SuperpowerGrowing up, Filip acknowledges being distracted by dreams and visions of what he could create but didn’t put into action. “It never really amounted to anything because I spend all my time daydreaming and envisioning what could be,” he confessed. He made a conscious decision to put dreams into action by breaking down the vision into actionable steps. He says it starts by identifying the core of what you want. For him, that is reversing climate change. He breaks down the steps required to get there, focusing on the priority today and tomorrow. “Instead of staring yourself blind at how many steps it is to get there, you start identifying a few milestones along the way.”Most importantly, he says, you’ve got to start. “Primarily, you start walking because it’s not one giant step that covers a thousand steps that will get us somewhere. It’s a thousand steps covering one giant step.”Finally, he says, “It’s more important to do something than to do nothing.”We could summarize his strategy by breaking it down into clear steps:Identify a clear vision.Target interim milestones.Focus on activities today that move you toward your vision.Start executing.By following his example for action-oriented vision, you can make it a superpower that will enable you to do more good than you ever imagined.
