He has advanced degrees in education and his career is helping families who have special needs kids who are on the spectrum. Covid hit his income hard though, so he was forced to go out "on his own" as an educator and he needed more income. Within just a few months he's about to have his first $10K sales month. At first glance, Tim Davis was not an ideal candidate for the Marine Corps. Although he had wanted to join the Marines since grade school, Davis was unathletic, overweight and had a shoulder problem that would require surgery before he could qualify for service.“I was a big nerd,” Davis laughed. “I was functionally fat in the Marine Corps.”Davis was sworn into the Marines a week before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Over the course of a 15-year career in the Corps, he deployed nine times, engaged in anti-terrorism operations in Southeast Asia, and collaborated with military forces from around the world.Today, Davis is working toward a doctorate in adult education and teaches ethics to the next generation of Marine Corps leaders. He's also a minor internet celebrity, having appeared in a couple of Marine memes that went viral. In this week's episode of Borne the Battle, Tim Davis talks about the life lessons he learned in the Corps, making the transition from soldier to civilian, how his experiences in the military helped him prepare for a career as a teacher, and the difference between teaching adults and children. He also discusses the benefits of studying jiu-jitsu and how it helps to heal both body and mind. How does he do it? “Remain calm,” Davis said. “Find the humor in the situation.”Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Marine Veteran John Reyes Additional Links: Veterans Jiu-Jitsu VA prepares to get ahead of surge in backlogged claims VA stands up commission to recommend new Veterans Health Administration Under Secretary

Then, in groups, they created posters, with stick figures embellished to show how these dispositions might look in an ideal teacher. Remember, for many of these students, this poster presentation was their first time talking about education in front of others. I'm thankful they agreed to allow me to record this for the podcast at the time. So, from those who had recently left school…what does a professional educator look like? As we navigate having to teach, learn, and parent in multiple modalities caused by a global pandemic, I can't but help to notice how often these students pointed out that teachers needed to be flexible, organized, and caring. Even in the beforetimes, and, if you are listening to this in the future, after the pandemic is over, you would agree that these are key dispositions for all educators to possess. My colleagues in the Edjacent collaborative are focusing on issues of professionalism, and the many expectations thrust upon teachers as a result of systemic, personal, societal, or administrative pressures influencing the profession. As many of us will attest, there is no “one answer” to the question of what a professional educator looks like. The word “professional” is a term often used to place pressure on educators, when in reality the field has been slowly and systematically deprofessionalized. How the next generation of teachers embrace their status will be key. This is definitely a topic that we will revisit in the future… But until then, That was Episode 19 of the Teachers Teatime Podcast. This podcast is a proud member of Edjacent, a design collaborative made up of educators who dream of a better world for our students and their teachers. In today's episode, I ask some of my education students a big question: “what does a professional educator look like?” I thought it pertinent to share this now as, over the last year, especially during the pandemic, teachers have had to adapt to multiple models of teaching: in person, online self-paced, online in real-time, hyflex (where they do online and in-person at the same time), the art and act of teaching has been on public display more than ever before. Education is complex, and teachers have had to adjust how, when, and where they work at minimal notice. In the public eye, teachers have gone from heroes, when parents struggled to get their own kids to engage in learning when on lockdown, and the subsequent realization that wrangling over thirty of someone else's children is more difficult than they initially assumed. To villains, when some teachers are inflexible or intolerant in acknowledging the problems of their learner's new learning environments, or the narrative that students are not learning online, or not being given work that is engaging, or that teachers are struggling to adapt to these new modalities. The thing is, the dispositions needed to be a successful, professional educator in the height of a pandemic, are not that different to those of a successful professional educator in the before times. This takes us to today's content. A year ago, right before the pandemic hit, I asked my students, who were in their first ever education class, to think about what they know about teachers and teaching, and in groups, create a poster showing what a professional educator looks like and why. How might you tell if a teacher is a good one just by looking? For many, this poster presentation was their first time talking about education in front of others. I'm so thankful they agreed to allow me to record this for the podcast at the time. So, from those who had recently left school…what does a professional educator look like? Listening to these presentations, I couldn't help pick out some common dispositions. I'm sure there were some that resonated with you too. We will here some more from the students in the next episode. For me, it's the stories of teachers, students, and school communities that matter. As such, this podcast is only possible with the help and support of its listeners. Please leave positive reviews wherever you are able. On todays show she speaks about her career path to date, and the different roles she has had, and what these varied roles entailed. In this episode. We explore America’s ongoing and persistent issues when it comes to race and social justice... in particular holding a mirror up to all of us in the U.S. … so we can face our history… and do the work required to push back on the structural racism that marginalizes, restricts, and harms our black and brown neighbors… and also make room for voices outside the mainstream… to have a seat at the table. My guest is Barry Thomas, Professional Educator, Community Advocate & Activist in Omaha, Nebraska, who is concerned about issues related to race within the country and has dedicated his time to addressing these issues and educating the community. While this interview was recorded just prior to the police killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests and unrest… our conversation remains relevant, given the fact that both Floyd’s killing and the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and others stem from the systemic racism that permeates U-S society. This episode is Part TWO of my interview with Barry Thomas. You can hear part ONE at NewsInContext.net.
Join me in this beautiful interview with a beautiful guy, Dr Matt Jeffs, DPT PSM CEAS Principal Faculty at The Back School and National Faculty at Summit Professional Education. Matt is clearly a skilled clinician, educator, and innovative thinker. He excels at examining the latest scientific research regarding our global relationship with stress, and more importantly, what we can do about it. In this interview, we discuss the flow state, how it changes the brain, and ways we are able to easily access it within our busy lives. Matt discusses his own journey with practicing Tai Chi, and how an almost accidental daily practice led to remarkable decreases in stress and anxiety within his daily life. He shares his realization that yin/yang is a lifestyle and that in our culture of spending long hours in front a computer, sitting meditation may not be the best choice for a daily practice, and how tai chi can become a meditation of movement practice. We talk about the changing world of physical therapy, the forward placement of telehealth, and how we must transition to a whole body approach to treatment. if any of these topics grab you, I promise you will love the flow and storytelling in this episode! The broad overview of A Professional Educator’s Journey From Financial Misery to Financial Mastery
Born and raised in Ukraine, a professional diversiculturalist Dr. Fiona Citkin came to the US as a Fulbright Scholar studying languages and cultures at Kent State University, OH. Fiona's first book was on language/translation (Terminology and Translation, Lviv, Vischa Shkola, 1988, in Russian) and it brought her recognition in European academia. For the book “Transformational Diversity: Why and How Intercultural Competencies Can Help Organizations to Survive and Thrive” (SHRM Publishing, 2011) Fiona has been recognized as a Top 2012 Champion of Diversity by diversitybusiness.com, a think-tank. This book was a seminal stepping stone for further exploration of the diverse American culture and the real-world ways to instill inclusion. Fiona's upcoming new book, “How They Made It in America: Seven Success Commandments,” started with a desire to explore how diverse talented individuals make it big in America. She focused on prominent women immigrants as the book subjects—just because she knew from her own experiences that women face frequent trials and tribulations on their way to success. The topic appeared so rich that it soon became clear she'll need to write a book series, to at least solidly scratch it. You may see more details on www.fionacitkin.com Since April 2013, Fiona's monthly Huffington Post contributions explore the issues of multicultural women and what it takes to make it in America: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/fiona-citkin-phd/. With experience as Director of Berlitz, FGI, and a personal consulting portfolio with major corporations, Fiona accumulated skills in public speaking, marketing, coaching, training, magazine and TV interviews, entrepreneurship, and of course, intercultural communication and languages. Fiona speaks three languages: English, Russian, and Ukrainian. After living and working in Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Great Britain, and Switzerland) she now resides in Warren, NJ, USA, and can be reached at fiona.citkin@expertms.com.

Our featured guest and fellow Professional Educator, Mr. Tony Mellon will grace us with his "internal" vantage point on the ramifications of frivolous/excess labeling of minority students in 21st century academia. Thought provoking questions embody: What are some common diagnoses (labels) inflicted upon students? Please expound upon them. How do such labels impact students' identity? Is abundant "labeling" a convenient medium to appease instructors in academic spheres? Moreover, is the male demographic a primary "target" of clinical diagnoses such as ADHD and ODD to name a few? Hence, is there a higher disposition and/or inclination to diagnose male versus female students? How prevalent are misdiagnoses within this arena and what external factors induce skewed results (domestic turmoil, abuse etc)? Furthermore, how can a healthy equilibrium be attained regarding the aforementioned topic or dilemma at hand? Rather, how can a sound degree of "purpose" become reinstated/restored/cultivated for impacted youth (reconfiguration/recalibration)?
