Today I speak with Amy Leedham, trail and ultra runner runner. She is a Solomon sponsored athlete who represented the USA at the 2018 Trail Running World Championships. After dealing with some injuries, she got pregnant and had her daughter in July of 2020. She ran and did strength training during her pregnancy and thought everything was normal until she started to run 11 weeks postpartum. Even 9 months postpartum, she was still unable to run. She talks about her experience trying to get physical therapy care postpartum and her struggles dealing with insurance and conflicting opinions. Amy openly shares her struggles with her birth and the struggles she had getting the care she needed postpartum. This week we talk with Amy Leedham - a Salomon athlete, sustainability consultant and new mom to an 11 week old little girl. We get to hear about her evolution into ultra running, how she became a sponsored athlete and many fun stories about big races overseas (OCC, IAU World Championships and CCC). She had a tough 2019 with a hip injury that prevented her from competing in most of her goal races and soon after found out she was pregnant! Amy shares what her pregnancy was like, the birth of her daughter, Aila, and her return to running postpartum. She talks on how she had to readjust a lot of her expectations of running while pregnant and she shares a bit of her fast birth story (she puts it into terms of showing up ready to run a 50 miler but instead the race was an 800 m sprint). Amy honestly talks about the hard times of early postpartum days and how she is slowly starting to build her fitness back up. She is focusing on strength, protecting her hip to prevent more flair ups as she gets back into running and is mindful of her energy balance in these early postpartum days, always asking herself if certain exercises will fill her tank or drain it. It was a blast chatting with Amy and hearing her stories. And we were so inspired by the running she's done and the big goals she still has and will no doubt achieve once her body is ready and the world opens back up. The sculptures in the garden are diverse in character and look stunning within the location,  each one fitting harmoniously into the backdrop of planting and landscape. Victoria is responsible for sourcing and placing sculpture in the garden, alongside owner garden designer Anthony Paul. About the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden: “The Sculpture Garden was the brainchild of owner and original curator Hannah Peschar 36 years ago, and has grown from a handful of sculptures to over 200 pieces exhibited every summer. Artists come from across Britain and Europe to exhibit their work in these breathtaking surroundings, allowing their sculptures to be seen in a whole new way. The Garden used to be part of a large estate, laid out between 1915 and 1920. Later it was split up and sold in several lots; leaving the 15th Century, grade 2 listed cottage with ten acres of land including a large water and rock garden. The garden fell rapidly into decline after the estate was sold. Over the past 40 years the garden has been redesigned and replanted by award-winning landscape designer Anthony Paul, who has introduced many large-leaved plants in bold groups, tall grasses and created 3 new ponds. Created over 35 years ago in Ockley, Surrey, this was the first garden of its kind in the UK. It seemed appropriate to talk outside as that's where the sculptures are - the garden is their gallery. Sheena Leedham earned her Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education and her master's degree in education (K-6) at Edinboro University. This led her to specialize in recreational sport/fitness programming for children and adults with autism in the public school setting, a partial hospitalization program, Barber National Institute, a private gym setting, and Turning Pointe Autism Foundation. She serves as a facilitator and consultant for Ohio State University’s Nisonger Center programs: Men’s Aspirations, ACE, and PLAN. It’s here she develops and implements recreational sport/fitness curriculums for young adults with autism. Weekly she trains Dave Tate's sixteen-year-old son with Aspergers (the wonderful Blaine Tate). Her column's goal is to educate families and trainers on why and how to constantly incorporate movement in the lives of children and young adults with autism. Sheena is also the Managing Editor for elitefts.
