Before narrative arcs, there was Acererak." Dive into Tomb of Horrors Part II and uncover how D&D's most infamous deathtrap shaped the game we love (and sometimes fear). In Part II of the RPGBOT.Podcast's deep dive into Tomb of Horrors, the hosts examine the legendary module not just as a harrowing dungeon crawl, but as a historical artifact that reflects the design philosophies, challenges, and mindset of early Dungeons & Dragons. The discussion unpacks how Tomb of Horrors shaped player expectations, influenced dungeon design, and helped define the adversarial relationship between dungeon masters and players in early editions. The episode also explores how Gary Gygax's approach to game balance, storytelling, and player mortality in Tomb of Horrors laid the groundwork for decades of D&D design choices—both embraced and rejected by later generations. The Real Villain is the Dungeon: Unlike other adventures with monsters and villains, Tomb of Horrors uses the environment itself—full of traps and tricks—as the main antagonist. Modern players used to forgiving mechanics or narrative safety nets can find the module jarringly punishing. The Adversarial DM Was Once the Norm: Tomb of Horrors epitomizes an era where the Dungeon Master was a challenge to be overcome, not a collaborative storyteller. Player Death Was Expected—Even Celebrated: Mortality wasn't a failure, it was part of the game's drama. Character death drove table stories and became a badge of honor for those who survived. Modern Reimaginings Have Softened the Edges: Later versions (3e, 4e, 5e) of the module add story hooks and balanced mechanics but often struggle to retain the tension of the original. There's a tradeoff between accessibility and authenticity. It's a Snapshot of D&D's Origins: Tomb of Horrors is more than a dungeon—it's a reflection of how the earliest games were played, judged, and shared.
It's Christmas time! Join the Til Dice Do Us Part team for a party.... er, I mean avery sensible team meeting in this special podcast episode! First up, we've got some inspiration as George & Ailsa share their experiences at advent-themed adentures when they talk about Christmas In Gaming. They'll tell you about some Christmas-y themed adventures they have played in a few different games, including D&D, and give some suggestions for how you can come up with your own holiday special. Then pull on your biggest boots as we go trudging through the snow to an Elevator Pitch - albeit it's more pantomime than pathos as we introduce you to Kobolds Ate My Baby! It's a game designed to be played with Beer & Pretzels, so even slightly tipsy gamers can give this one a go. We'll tell you how the game works, what its good and bad bits are, plus we'll even talk a little about King Torg. ALL HAIL KING TORG!Our selection box has a few more tasty treats for you. There's return visits from some old friends like Nigella Lichson and Acererak the Demilich, a discussion on which Doctor Who villain gives Ailsa the jibblies, an explanation of the game Bogies, a horrifying glimpse into the world of Mr Blobby; and a special message from Shoved Granny Games who have the album you've all been waiting for. Plus, maybe an extra segment appears in the episode? Truly it's a Christmas miracle! We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year. In this episode we talk about one of the most powerful and well known lichs in all of Dungeons and Dragons, Acererak. Acererak is known for creating the Tomb of Horrors and we think about making a homebrew dungeon in his honor but instead decide to create a lich. Thanks to Arcane Anthems for offering amazing royalty free music for nerds like us, we used their amazing tracks Shillelagh (Spirit of Brynn) and Solemn Rest for our intro and outro respectively.
With only one tomb of a trickster god left, our heroes attempt to acquire the help of the Kamedan before descending to the Gears of Hate on their way to stop Acererak's evil plan. "Acererak congratulates you on your powers of observation, so make of this whatever you wish, for you will be mine in the end no matter what! Go back to the tormentor or through the arch, and the second great hall you'll discover. Shun green if you can, but night's good color is for those of great valor. If shades of red stand for blood, the wise will not need sacrifice aught but a loop of magical metal- you're well along your march. Two pits along the way will be found to lead to a fortuitous fall, so check the wall. These keys and those are most important of all, and beware of trembling hands and what will maul. If you find the false you find the true, and into the columned hall you'll come, and there the throne that's key and keyed. The iron men of visage grim do more than meets the viewer's eye. You've left and left and found my tomb, and now your souls will die!" - The Decadent Lich Traps, traps and more traps! Introduction! Thanks for the warm and overwhelming support on the return! Chapter 007 Recap Parzival has an epiphany that his home school planet of Ludus is actually the resting place of the Tomb of Horrors. After exploiting away to travel there without zero credits, he manages to find the entrance and makes his way in, ready for the perils that lie ahead. Chapter 0008 Summary With the help of a map from the Tomb of Horrors module, Parzival makes his way through the treacherous tomb avoiding traps and monsters and collecting a heavy amount of gold pieces along the way. He's eventually confronted by Acererak who challenges him to a best 2 out of 3 game of Joust, the classic arcade game. Parzival bests Acererak winning the copper key along with a clue to the first gate but before he's able to leave the Tomb of Horrors, he's stopped short of the entrance by a mysterious figure who making their way inside as well… Chapter 0008 Narrative Parzival uses his map to navigate through the ToH and avoid most of the traps and monsters Levels up like a few types of classes; monster xp vs GP xp; gp xp converts to OASIS credits He eventually makes his way to the Pillared Throne Room where he sees a throne and Acereak sitting there which is a break from the D&D module The voices inside our heads here - what did you hear when you read the booK? "Not horses," he replied, stepping away from his throne. "Birds." The rules to win a copper key, best two out of three. Of course, Parzival had honed his skills over time and credits Aech as it was his favorite (and former) game used to settle asinine pop culture disputes, but did you ever take issue with just how good Wade/Parzival was at everything? I've seen some of the negative criticism from people who didn't paritcularly like the novel and it's a go-to for a lot of those people. Parzival gets his arse handed to him in match #1; but then asks to play on the other side in order to win games 2 and 3 After the second win, Acererak pounds on the side of the cabinet smashing into pixles and graciously congratulates Parzival before taking the form of Anorak. Anaorak hands him the copper key, and Parzival notice two lines of text etched into the key reading, “What you seek lies hidden in the trash on the deepest level of Daggorath.” He immediately knows exactly what this hints refers to and has a hunch that he needs to travel to Middletown, a re-creation of Halliday's hometown as a boy. There, in Halliday's old home, he would find a "Dungeons of Daggorath" game and somehow that would lead him to the first gate to use the copper key on. All he needed to do now was get out of the Tomb of Horrors and make his way immediately there, but just as he was leaving the tomb, he is confronted by the silhouette of another avatar… The Pop! With the discussion about pillars of Dungeons & Dragons wrapped up, the panel of DM's decides to look into WHY people play D&D as opposed to other games. The first broad topic is determining what defines the fantasy genre, what it makes it so attractive, and what draws the hosts to this roleplaying game, specifically the Forgotten Realms setting. As the conversation moves to the details of Forgotten Realms, the Dungeon Masters discuss what the most interesting pieces of the Forgotten Realms lore actually are, and what they find the most inspiring about them. From nostalgia and inspiration to comparing the differences between gritty campaigns, high fantasy campaigns, and low fantasy campaigns, this episode covers a wide variety of topics and often goes completely off the rails! SUMMARY: There is a lot to unpack in the fantasy genre, D&D, and Forgotten Realms, and as Terry and Adam drill Dan on the specifics, they learn a few shocking details about Dan's improv poetry skills and his preference for vampire sex games. The Dungeon Masters touch on fantasy inspirations, including Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, A Song of Ice and Fire, Dracula, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Magic the Gathering, Anne Rice novels, Lord of the Rings, Critical Role, World of Warcraft, Star Trek, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, The Dark Tower, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion Warhammer, Harry Potter, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Norse, Celtic, and Greek mythologies, Pathfinder, Scott Lynch novels, The Belgariad, Discworld, Piers Anthony books, The Dresden Files, D&D video games, R. A. Salvatore novels, and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The conversation then moves on to D&D specifically, covering some books and campaign settings (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Storm King's Thunder, Tyranny of Dragons, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, Tomb of Annihilation, Tales of the Yawning Portal, Death House and Curse of Strahd, Dark Sun, Greyhawk, Eberron, and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks), and then taking a look at the Forgotten Realms, specifically The Spellplague, the two Sunderings, Elminster, Drizzt Do'Urden, Mordenkainen and The Circle of Eight, Toril, Faerun, Evermeet, Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, Undermountain, The Underdark, Netheril, Lolth, Mystra, Cyric, The Many Arrows Clan, The Lord's Alliance, the Elf/Drow conflict, Thay/Rashemen conflict, Szass Tam, Acererak, Vecna, The Regalia of Evil, The Star Stone, The Deck of Many Things, The Sunsword, Dragons, Mindflayers, and Halflings. You leave Radigast City at the break of dawn, traveling north until reaching an unnamed river. For days, the water is your guide as lush earth gives way to dreary moors and tangled thickets. Finally, in the distance, you see a white plume of smoke rising from a mountain in the distance. Two miles from the volcano, you find a suitable cave in which to store your supplies. "Dead Knoll's Eye Socket," your guide says. "This is where I take leave. Good luck." With your traveling gear stored safely away, you make your way along unsettled the land, being careful to avoid any fissures venting steam. Levi, the party's thief, is the first to hear the mountain breathing. Once you all hear it, you realize it comes in a cycle: a thirty-second exhale of heat followed by a half minute of calm. The cave your guide said to seek now lies before you, about eight feet in diameter. Suddenly, the whooshing breath of White Plume Mountain almost knocks you over. The torch Bautigan the Brave readied is extinguished by the blast of air. You have thirty seconds before the next wave of wind and steam comes your way. What do you do? Dungeons and Dragons. In the 80s, many claimed it was a tool of Satan. Today, it's a mainstream staple of pop culture. It's also this week's topic of Men in Gorilla Suits... * * * We roll initiative and discuss when we first became aware of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). After that, we talk about when we played...and if we still play today. We talk about why D&D has endured for 45 years...and how technology has affected the game in recent years. Because we are geeks, we devote some time to our favorite D&D monsters, player classes, and races. We mentioned the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, which many claimed was the worst thing about D&D. It never came to be (because there was nothing to worry about), but that doesn't stop us from chatting about the worst thing playing D&D can do to a person. Dungeons and Dragons has become a pop culture staple, and we talk about our favorite appearance of the game in something we've watched or listened to. And we wrap up this episode with two things: Our favorite D&D memories. What the future holds for D&D

For decades, its legend has endured, striking fear into the hearts of Dungeons and Dragons players everywhere. The mere mention of its name has been known to drive groups of lifelong companions, once closer than siblings, to infighting, betrayal, and chaos. In the darkest corners of the experienced role-player's dice-fueled fever dreams, its presence lingers like a shroud -- the great humbler of the power gamer. For whenever a D&D party grows too boastful, too assured of their own invincibility, too confident of final victory over an entire game world or campaign setting, they will inevitably find themselves standing at the gates of the deadliest dungeon ever conceived: the Tomb of Horrors! Now, those gates open once more. Two groups of brave adventurers have arrived, both representing the respected House of Bioware, each looking to test their mettle against the most notorious suicide mission in the history of high fantasy: From the the Sword Coast region of the Forgotten Realms, aka A World Much Like This One But A World That Is Very Different, comes the Party of Baldur's Gate -- Viconia, the haughty Drow cleric; Imoen, the spell-slinging thief from Candlekeep; Edwin, the extremely evil but also exceptionally useful conjurer; and Minsc, the berserk ranger who doesn't have the stats to be a ranger, but DOES have a miniature giant space hamster named Boo, which counts for a lot. And from the maybe-not-terribly-distant-but-definitely-not-on-any-maps land of Thedas, it's the Party of Dragon Age -- Anders, the church-bombing fanatic possessed by the concept of justice; Varric, the crossbow-wielding dwarf with nimble fingers and a lying tongue; Morrigan, shapeshifting witch of the Korcari Wilds; and Iron Bull, the one-eyed Qunari berserker spy. Which party will navigate the Tomb's brutal series of traps, see through its illusions, defeat its guardians, and confront the demi-lich Acererak to claim his glittering treasure? Will Liz even be able to say "Acererak?" Will Miles ever be able to stop referencing experience tables, ability scores, and spell levels? And what happens when MeganBob is suddenly given full license to ship all eight of these characters?

The blood spilled would have been without lament, and the victims thereof would have been a natural occurrence.
