What happens when data knows us better than we know ourselves? In this raw and riveting conversation, John Vervaeke and Christopher Mastropietro sit down with Andy Russell — a former architect of data-driven persuasion — to expose how AI, behavioral profiling, and social media algorithms can hijack human desire, threaten our agency, and reshape our civilization. But there's hope: what if the same power that manipulates us can be used to heal us? This episode lays bare the disturbing origins of persuasion tech, how it was used in politics and commerce, and what it will mean when AI takes the driver's seat. Andy shares his personal reckoning, his brush with death, and how he's dedicating the rest of his life to restoring dignity and meaning to the human experience — with spiritual urgency. Andy Russell is a serial entrepreneur and former insider in data and media technology. After helping build some of the very tools that now shape persuasion online, he experienced a profound moral and existential crisis. He now advocates for radical transparency, decentralized AI, and human-centered design as a pathway toward societal healing. Christopher Mastropietro is a philosophical writer who is fascinated by dialogue, symbols, and the concept of self. He actively contributes to the Vervaeke Foundation. Sundae Labs aims to build tools and systems that foster a healthier relationship between humanity and technology. This week I'm reading from Andy Russell's book 'Testimony Volume 1: Alien Abduction in the UK'.The phenomena of alien abduction has always been viewed in a very US-centric spotlight despite this being a global phenomena. Testimony looks at the phenomena from a UK perspective, looking at the history of alien abduction in the UK as well as looking at some never previously discussed case studies. Some of these case studies have some unusual aspects which serve to remind us that the phenomena is more complex than we first imagined.BioAndy Russell has been researching the UFO & Abduction phenomena since the mid-1980s. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless, AFN programs were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them, and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programs available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London.

Okay, so every episode is really special to us, but this one is particularly special for Kristen as there will be people who know these two based on their first and last names, but Kristen knows them as "Mom & Dad". This episode is for all the mums and dads out there with a passion to fill, and kids to raise. Being biased slightly, but would say that Andy and Julie are pretty amazing parents, and they even noted, "...there is no manual on this" and when raising kids, sometimes you just have to "...pick them up and run with it." Both growing up in a similar area in the San Francisco Bay Area, Andy and Julie meeting each other young, have had quite some adventures together! From throwing the boat on the water on any given weekday to waterski, to driving up the mountains for a ski trip, Andy and Julie had it pretty sweet, and then the best thing ever came along - Kristen! (Can you tell who wrote this...?) We chatted with these two about raising kids as active parents and negotiating when they would fit activities in, and when to bring the kids along (even if it meant some kicking and screaming). Now finding "home" again in the mountains, Andy and Julie live at the base of Mt Rose outside of Reno, Nevada as the kids have all gone off on their own adventures, these two have not slowed down by any means. Still out ski touring, mountain biking, running, hiking, golfing, and any other activity a friend invites them to - we get into it all in this episode! We talked about longevity in the athletic and adventure space, and competing with their own self over others. These two are an inspiration to both Kristen and Sarah, and we hope that you draw as much insight as we did from the experiences that these two share together. As a particularly proud daughter, Kristen is extremely honored to bring you this episode. In true adventure fashion, if you want to find these two on socials, the best place to look them up is their Strava accounts! : Andy Russell, and Julie Russell As we mention in the introduction, Andy was not feeling well so Sarah recorded over Zoom, but we hope it does not draw away from the great conversation. Thanks as always for tuning in! Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all! You are amazing!!
The UK robo advice market has been hitting the headlines again due to the recent JP Morgan Chase deal to buy Nutmeg. So what does this mean for Nutmeg's rival Wealthify? Like other robos in the market, Wealthify has yet to turn a profit since launching in 2016. In its results for 2020 it recorded a loss of £5.3m, up from a £4.8m loss the year before. I spoke with chief executive Andy Russell, who joined last year from parent company Aviva. He shared the firm's growth plans, and whether it's possible to make money from customers investing small amounts.

Now, we don't have the recordings, and we don't have Andy Russell's dulcet voice, but we do have the scripts and, the underlying music of Robert Farnon theme "Gateway to the West." So sit back, as a history nerd recreates a few of the old Calgary Power infomercials.
Why do existing organizations with resources find themselves irrelevant (or no longer in existence), whether through new technology, changes in demographics, competition? Chances are they did not plan for the disruption, which can come from any direction or place, especially where we least expect it. Sameer Hasija is co-author of The Phoenix Encounter Method: Lead Like Your Business Is On Fire. Just like the mythical phoenix that is born again from the ashes, this method requires you to think of your business truly being disrupted (burning to the ground) so you can build it again. Shifting your mindset to create a burning platform, allows you to build a playbook to defend against the attacks (in whatever form they take). This is an on-going process and can take your organization to the next level. This episode is brought to you by… From Manager to Remarkable Leader, Kevin's Flagship workshop based on his proven leadership model. Innovation and creativity never go out of style. However, sometimes we find ourselves in institutionalized inertia. Our creative side is stifled because of the systems, structures, and processes in place. Scott Anthony says these are things that help today and make it hard to change for tomorrow. Scott is the co-author of Eat, Sleep, Innovate: How to Make Creativity an Everyday Habit in Your Organizations, and shares with Kevin that we need balance; we need a dual transformation. Innovation is something different that creates value, and no innovation story is a straight line. Leaders need to encourage and celebrate the challenges along the way. Further, the need to create an environment that is tolerable of new behavior and trust your team wants to do it and is capable of innovation. Do you set aside the time and energy for innovation? Do you set aside the same time and energy for maintaining? Kevin sits down with Lee Vinsel and Andy Russell, authors of The Innovation Delusion: How our Obsession With the New Has Disrupted the Work that Matters Most. Vinsel and Russell are not opposed to creating and new things; however, they believe we have put too much faith in innovation to cure our problems. Therefore, we tend to neglect what is already there and create a society out of balance. A moment of innovation is just that, a moment in time. We need cognitive space to think about maintenance. Maintenance makes up a large part of human activity, yet we ignore it or even look down on the people who do that work (right now, we are calling those folks “essential workers). Leaders need to recognize that maintenance sustains success, maintenance depends on the culture, and maintenance requires constant care. For these things to happen, we may need creativity and innovation. This episode is brought to you by… 13 Days to Remarkable Leadership, a free leadership video series based on Kevin's book, Remarkable Leadership. The role of the “kurabito” – one who works in a sake brewery – is incredibly varied. While the traditional image is that of a team of brewers hunkered down for a long brewing season of focus and isolation, nowadays the term has come to encompass the diverse range of tasks at the brewery involved in seeing a bottle of sake through from start to finish. That being said, for the most part, having a physical hand in the process of crafting sake, in more cases than not, is often central to the role.New sake breweries are popping up right and left internationally, creating opportunities for ambitious brewers to experience the craft closer to home, however the role as it exists in Japan is very much something unique to beverage's relationship to the livelihoods, people, communities and culture that it has been central to for centuries. This makes the role of working in a sake brewery in Japan incredibly special and intriguing, yet equally demanding and challenging. As sake's prevalence has grown internationally, so has the number of non-Japanese investing a significant part of their time and energy to the act of making sake here in Japan. While those cases are still few and far between, you can only expect it to become more common. This week we invited three gentlemen from very different backgrounds with different motivations; their common thread being that they have all found themselves making sake as kurabito here in Japan, each at very different breweries of very different scale, style and philosophy. We're joined this week by Andy Russell at Imada Shuzo in rural Hiroshima, makers of Fukucho, Jorge Navarrete of Matsui Shuzo in the heart of Kyoto, makers of Kagura, and J.J. over at Imanishi Seibei Shoten in Nara, makers of Harushika.Together with Sebastien, Chris and Justin, the group explores the nature of this truly invaluable, yet incredibly demanding, and equally rewarding career path. Do Our Computers Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves? | This episode is brought to you by Perfect KetoStudies have shown humans only actually remember 0.05% of our memories, whereas databases can remember it all! It’s a scary realization, but computers can know us in a way we don’t even know ourselves. We like to think we aren’t easily persuaded, but when companies know our likes, wants, needs, and purchase history it all adds up to an easier sale. Earlier this year, Dr. Hyman sat down to discuss this topic with Andy Russell. Andy explains how big companies like Google and Facebook access and use our data. He also shares what we can do to maintain control over the content we see.Andy Russell is a digital media, ad-tech, marketing-tech, and data science innovator and pioneer as well as a self-taught Behavioral Economist. He has invested in, incubated, or run over 50 technology companies, including Daily Candy, Thrillist, Tasting Table, Idealbite, PureWow, Zynga, Betaworks, Business Insider, Sailthru, RapLeaf and LiveRamp, SpongeCell, AdRoll, and Bounce Exchange. Innovation is the hottest prize in the business. It attracts the most attention. It sells stocks in a blitz. It also distracts from what matters the most - maintaining, caring for, and upkeeping what we have already invented. Today we talk with Lee Vinsel, an assistant professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and Andy Russell, professor of history and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Andy and Lee are technology historians and the authors of The Innovation Delusion, a new book that is coming out on September 8th, published by Penguin Random House. We provide you with a sneak peek into this book, which is already the number one bestseller on all major online bookstores. When you finish listening to the episode, be sure to grab your copy. When I was growing up we had news sources we could trust. Under The Fairness Doctrine, news on the radio, TV, and in print was partial and fair. But in 1987 during the Reagan administration, this was repealed, leading to alternative media and more misinformation than ever before. And now with the internet, we are truly in the wild west of sharing information, collecting data, and trying to maintain privacy. Big companies take advantage of that from all angels with their marketing, which is now ultra-targeted (and often in ways you wouldn’t even be able to recognize). Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Andy Russell to talk about what data really means, who has yours, how they got it, and how they use it. Andy is a digital media, ad-tech, marketing-tech, and data science innovator and pioneer as well as a self-taught Behavioral Economist. Is AG Barr the Real Deal? Can he save America? Looking good so far. We assemble the available evidence, reviewing Attorney General William Barr's apparent determination to follow the law wherever it may lead. Asking the right questions and making the right moves in the direction of SpyGate accountability. We sample strong praise of AG Barr from luminaries Joe diGenova, Devin Nunes and Victor Davis Hanson. As the MSM starts to demonize Trump's "hand-picked" Attorney General, we preview their next big backfire. Meanwhile, leftist Noam Chomsky sketches Democrat failures on Russia and suggests they "may have handed" Trump "the next election."
