Meg Eckhardt has a soothing alto voice. “Music speaks to a person's heart,” she says in this week's podcast.Eckhardt, who lives in Guilderland now, grew up listening to her English mother sing everything from folk songs to bar songs as she bustled about the house, doing chores. “There was music in the house all the time,” she said. Eckhardt did the same, raising her own children. Singing, she says, gives her a sense of freedom. “You don't have to explain yourself,” she said. A registered nurse, Eckhardt became a massage therapist and used to work with hospice patients. She found that playing music from an era that mattered to her patients could comfort and uplift them as well as their families. She has sung in church choirs since she was 7. And now she also is a member of the Octavo Singers. “We primarily sing masses,” she said of the group of men and women, 100 strong. Every year, the group performs Handel's “Messiah” and Eckherdt has heard regular concert-goers say, “That is Christmas to me.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the Energy Central Community, July is all about customer care and everything that means and encompasses for the utility industry. In that light, this episode seeks to highlight the unique relationship between a wholesale power agency and its member utilities, the customer experience not through the lens of the end consumer and its utility but the relationship between the power producer and the local utility and how they team up to make magic happen for the ratepayers. On one side of this story is the electric utility department at the City of Bushnell, Florida, a small city in Central Florida with such a small coverage area and a small team that having resources and expertise in different areas can be a challenge. That's where Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) enters, as a wholesale power agency that is owned by 31 municipal electric utilities across the state, including Bushnell, and empowers its member utilities. Today, podcast host Jason Price and producer Matt Chester are joined by FMPA's General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer, Jody Finklea, and Bushnell's City Manager and Finance Director, Jody Young. They're here to share how FMPA aided Bushnell to expand the city's electric customers by a whopping 50%, from 1,100 to nearly 1,800. Increasing the customer base that dramatically allowed the city to then enhance its already reliable power systems and provide affordable power to its customers, generating some critical lessons for customer care across the utility sector. Māori self-determination will be "something that brings us together as a country", Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says as he unveils the next steps for Aotearoa to realise its international obligations to indigenous peoples.Speaking at his marae in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ngā Whare Waatea, Jackson announced by the end of 2022 the Government would have signed off on a plan to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Undrip) - the first in the world to have done so.It comes after a heated few months in Parliament after opposition parties leaked Government-commissioned document He Puapua, produced in 2019 to advise how New Zealand could realise its commitments under the Declaration. It included a roadmap to 2040 by which time it envisages various co-governance and Māori-run arrangements to address the huge inequities currently facing Māori. These include a separate Māori Parliament or upper house, health and justice systems, further return of Māori assets including foreshore and seabed, and recognition of cultural rights and equity. It was not Government policy, but National and Act labelled its Māori-focused initiatives as "separatist" and accused the Government of a hidden agenda.Jackson said this was not the case, rather the report was "a collection of ideas, suggestions aspirations and hopes for Maori – something to add to our discussions".New Zealand signed up to the Declaration in 2010 through then-Māori Affairs Minister and Māori Party co-leader Pita Sharples, under a National-led government.Jackson said today's announcement was continuing that cross-partisan work."It's appropriate we're at my marae, a cultural focal point for South Auckland Māori, to discuss a Declaration plan."For over 30 years Ngā Whare Waatea Marae has been a place for the local community to come together to plan for the future."He spoke of the kura, radio station, Whanau Ora, Youth programmes, domestic violence programmes, restorative justice, Marae justice, food bank - all on the marae grounds "where we exercise self-determination", Jackson said."However I know for many people who have never been to a marae like this, who may not be Māori – coming here can be scary."But I can assure you – once you walk through the gates you will be welcomed, you become part of what we have here and you will see, like many visitors before you, see that we have so much in common and share a belief in making Aotearoa the best country for all our children and our whanau to belong to."Like Ngā Whare Waatea, the Declaration can be a bit scary when you first look through its gates."But once we talk about it together, wananga, and even argue back and forth about it – it will become a place where talking about self-determination is welcomed, a place where we can share our aspirations and debate our future."It will be something that brings us together as a country."The Declaration was never meant to divide us. It is not a tool for separatism. It is not something to be afraid of. "Cabinet had signed off a two-step process, beginning with targeted engagement over the next few months with key iwi and significant Māori organisations on how they wish to be involved. This will be followed by wide public consultation with New Zealanders on a draft Declaration plan, with consultation next year with the aim to have it signed off at the end of 2022."The time is right to develop a plan that measures our progress in advocating for Māori in real and meaningful ways," Jackson said."This must reflect New Zealand and it's an important conversation for us to all have together as a nation.New Zealand is one of 148 countries that support the Declaration. Canada recently backed the Declaration with legislation and will have a plan in place within two years.Globally there is increased momentum to improve outcomes for indigenous peoples in areas such as health, education, and housing, Jackson said."This Government is focused on imp...

Opening Questions (connect to vignettes) Cindy wants to know, "Is oral sex okay in marriage? -- My husband every now and then likes it if I give him a blowjob, just for some variety in our sex life and he says there's no moral problem with that and it turns him on, but I'm not sure what I think and feel about that." Barbara asks "In episode 61, in the story of Jeff and Joanne, you seemed to say that the husband's kissing of breasts was wrong, that it was disordered. But I like it when my husband kisses my breasts during foreplay, and it really helps me to be sexually stimulated -- so is that off-limits in a Catholic marriage?" Bill raises the question "I really get turned on when my wife bites me, it helps me to have sex with her, I find I don't have to use Viagra then -- is that ok, or is it better for me to use the Viagra? I don't want to not be able to have the fullness of sexual intimacy with her…" The last two episodes brought up questions. These were not the actual questions, but questions like them came up. Today we're going get into this more deeply -- and into how to think about the moral quality of sexual acts in Catholic marriage. Intro: Welcome to the podcast Interior Integration for Catholics In this podcast, we confront the tough questions we Catholics have in our day-to-day lives, we confront head on our struggles in the natural realm, the psychological difficulties that keep us from fully loving our Lord and our Lady in a deep, personal, intimate way. This podcast helps you focus inward on your interior integration -- to help you bring together the different parts of yourself into unity and harmony with God. 'Together, we are on a journey toward deep transformation in our mindsets, our heartsets and our bodysets, a radical transformation at the core of our being so that our souls can one day enter into contemplative union with God. I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski and I am here with you, to be your host and guide. This podcast is part of Souls and Hearts, our online outreach at soulsandhearts.com, which is all about shoring up our natural foundation for the Catholic spiritual life, all about overcoming psychological obstacles to being loved and to loving God and neighbor This is episode 69, released on May 24, 2021 And it is titled: Good and Bad Sex in Catholic Marriages: What are the Moral Limits? How far is too far? That all depends on the direction you are going! Augustine -- evil as a privation of the good. Evil is what happens when there is a vacuum because there isn't any good around. So if you are attempting to just avoid evil -- makes sure there's no evil in your sex life, you're trying to make a privation of the privation of good. It's much better to reorient and seek what is good, what is best, whatever that may mean for your sex life. Even if you may have to give up some things from which you derive pleasure. Not to condemn the physical pleasure of sexual intimacy -- Not at all Bring that into an ordered hierarchy Lot of confusion about the morality of different sexual expressions Lack of clear guidance on this, almost like a conspiracy of silence when it comes to really getting into specifics. Lot of terrible advice from all kinds of Catholic sources as well. It may be well intentioned, but it causes harm. I could be making mistakes here too -- a lot of this is new territory and not well defined. -- And to that end, I invite feedback, especially if I teach anything that is in error. Please get in touch with me at crisis@soulsandhearts.com or at 317.567.9594 on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM Eastern time in conversations hours. Citations -- Catechism, Church documents, Canon Law, Denzinger's Compendium, Ludwig Ott Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma Don't email me and tell me that a confessor you went to ten years ago said that anything goes sexually in your marriage and God doesn't mind at all as long as it all leads to vaginal intercourse in the end. That's not helpful. Learning to reflect and consider thoughtfully our sexual intimacy. Ways of approaching sexual morality Some people want a list List of Dos and Don'ts List of approved sexual activities and a list of activities that are not approved. Simple, easy to understand, doesn't require much reflection -- is the activity on the good list or the bad list? And there is a bad list -- actually, a pretty long one Acts that can never be ordered, never be oriented to procreation by their very nature Examples Anal sex -- anatomically, anal sex cannot lead to procreation. Oral sex performed by a wife on a husband in which he ejaculates Fetishes in which some body part becomes the focus of sexual interest, like feet or ears or navel or an external object like shoes or underwear Acts that cannot ever be oriented to the bond of marriage because they are degrading to the human person Emphasis on "consenting adults" Issue of mutual hedonism. -- very worldly Using the spouse for mutual masturbation Using the spouse as a sex toy Examples Impact Play -- spanking, flogging, paddling -- power and domination Bondage -- restraints, dominance and submission -- use of leather belts or handcuffs. Voyeurism -- watching porn together Roleplaying -- power dynamics -- teacher /student Erotic asphyxiation (EA) is the official term for breath play. From healthline.com This type of sexual activity involves intentionally cutting off the air supply for you or your partner with choking, suffocating, and other acts. People who are into breath play say it can heighten sexual arousal and make orgasms more intense. But it isn't without its risks — and lots of them. It can turn deadly if you don't take the proper precautions. Does not capture anything like the complexity Catholic Understanding of the morality of human acts Check out with the catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1749 to 1761 for an excellent discussion of how to evaluate the morality of any given act, including sexual acts. Very much worth reading We are going to do a brief review of how to evaluate the morality of acts, specifically sexual acts And I promise we won't get to technical or philosophical, will keep this clear CCC 1750 The morality of human acts depends on: - the object chosen; - the end in view or the intention; - the circumstances of the action. The object, the intention, and the circumstances make up the "sources," or constitutive elements, of the morality of human acts. Catholic Diocese of Lincoln put out a nice summary on the Three Parts of the Moral Act for their Catholic highschoolers Object = the action or inaction chosen -- the what -- for example, using Viagra or kissing breasts, or the husband stimulating the wife's genitals with his toungue in oral sex. Intention/Motive -- the reason for doing the action or not doing an action Circumstances - -- stituational factors which may affect the morality of an action -- who, what, where, how. All three of these, the object, the intention, and the circumstances must be evaluated to determine if a moral act is good or evil. All three must be good for an act to be moral. Analyze the object first, then the intention, then the circumstances Object can be good, bad, or neutral Not just the physical action -- putting handcuffs on -- Prostitution. A bad object can never be justified even with the most laudable intentions or exceptional circumstances Intrinsic evil is determined by the object -- suicide. Asphyxiation The act itself is immoral -- no circumstances or intentions can change that The reason or intention A good or neutral action can become bad because of a bad intention E.g. almsgiving is a good action, but it can be done with the wrong intentions or in the wrong circumstances Objectively evil acts are often done for good reasons --in 2007, young Chilean prostitute who auctioned off 27 hours of sex so that she could give the money to help disabled children. The goodness of an act can be diminished or totally lost because of bad motives Can be mixed motives Parts The end does not justify the means End is the goal, my reason for doing it Means = the object, the way I get to that goal. The circumstances == everything else that is morally relevant Who is doing it Where, when and how is it done Doing something in the wrong way, in the wrong place, at the wrong time Husband and wife sharing sexual intimacy where their kids can witness them. Circumstances can make a good action bad A good action better A bad action worse A bad action not as bad But circumstances can never make a bad action good. Every intrinsically evil action will stay evil, regardless of the circumstances Remember, for an act to be good, all three elements must be good The act itself The intention behind the act The circumstances surrounding it All must be good for the act to be good. Impact of parts and blending Starting in Episode 71, much more about parts Parts trying to get needs met Ways that sex can be un-Catholic -- from episode 67 Catholic and UnCatholic Sex in Catholic Marriages Why does this thing bring me to orgasm -- why am I attracted to it. If we can't symbolize it in works, we're likely to enact The intention / motivation / orientation To get my needs met Sex will not resolve deep unmet attachment needs or deep unmet integrity needs (Episode 62) Just like food won't or drugs won't That's not what sex is for. Examples Open to procreation Oriented toward the marital bond -- the authentic union of the spouses. Culminating in vaginal intercourse or does it get derailed? Situational factors -- e.g. premature ejaculation. Example of Viagra -- Bill -- no problem By Father Rocky Hoffman Jun 14, 2011 Is the use of viagra morally acceptable by the Catholic Church? The morality of the use of any medicine depends on the object, the intention, and the circumstances. Assuming that the Viagra medicine has only one purpose, to facilitate the marital act, then it can be taken licitly only by married people who are open to life. If people are not married, and/or are not open to life, then it would be morally impermissible to take Viagra. If the married couple is beyond child-bearing age, but otherwise are open to life, then it could be morally licit to use Viagra if it helps keep the love and affection alive between husband and spouse. But what we must reject is the instrumentilization of sex for pleasure. That's a dead end and leads to isolation. The marital act always needs to be understood from the perspective of gift of self, and not a gift for self. Example of manual stimulation -- rubbing the genitals Example of kissing breasts Can be a very legitimate part of foreplay, very pleasurable and Jeff from Episode 61 -- This needy exile is now very regressed and begins to suck vigorously on her nipples. This part has just reduced Joanne to her breasts, Jeff's needy exile part doesn't see Joanne as a whole person at all. Remember, this needy exiled part of Jeff is starved from maternal affection. Jeff never nursed as a baby, was fed by a bottle, and he is now getting carried away by the illusion that his need can be met by this kind of sexualized pseudo nursing. This is thrilling to this part. Example of sensual biting otherwise known as odaxelagnia, can be roughly defined as this: The act of creating or enhancing sexual arousal through biting. Dominance Example of sex toys Definition: an object used to provide or increase sexual pleasure, as a dildo or vibrator. Vibrators. Suction toys. Dildos Marketing hype is all about maximizing pleasurable sensations -- not about Example of the husband performing oral sex on his wife Cindy's example of performing oral sex on her husband. Diagnostics -- looking at the fruit. Direction moving toward, direction moving away -- what is the trajectory over time? Is more order coming in? Do the sexual acts support the whole canopied marriage bed -- not just the eros, the sexual excitement. Can God be present? Or does what happens on the marriage bed need to be furtive, secret, hidden from God Sunlight -- the best disinfectant Bring this into the sun Issue of shame. Let's deal with the shame then If sex, even good, ordered sex, brings up shame, this is an opportunity. Prayer Latitude -- space for making mistakes If there is good will, good intentions, willingness to make sacrifices for our spouse's good and our own good. Human relationships are complicated, and there are all different kinds of them. But by and large, movies seem to tell only a few of those stories over and over. We’re leaving out a lot of people.

The new film "Together Together" explores the relationship that forms between a middle aged bachelor and his millennial surrogate, starring Ed Helms and Patti Harrison. Writer and director Nikole Beckwith joins us to discuss her sophomore film, which is out in theaters now.
A Northland Grey Power representative says it should not be so hard for seniors to get their Covid-19 jab and it is stressing people out. Ron Thompson is calling on health officials to get their act together and bring GPs in on the rollout. He talks to Lisa Owen.
Patti Harrison is known for bringing her absurd, caustic, yet charming comedy to supporting roles on shows like Search Party, Broad City and Shrill. But now she's in a starring role in the romantic comedy Together Together. In it, Harrison plays a young single woman who agrees to be a gestational surrogate for a single man in his 40s, played by Ed Helms. Sam talks to Patti about what it was like to play a role different from everything she's done before, why Together Together is even billed as a rom-com, and the quandary of representation as a trans woman.— Watch Sam's extended interview with Patti Harrison: https://youtube.com/nprYou can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at samsanders@npr.org.

Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I’m Tearsheet’s editor in chief, Zack Miller. A few years back, there was a race to embed payments into the browser. It makes sense, too. Most people who access the web through their computers use a browser to shop and bank. While the noise has died down, the Opera browser has continued to work on integrating financial services. Opera has 380 million users globally, with 50 million active European users. The firm is launching an app that gives its users cashback on purchases made through partner websites via the Opera browser. Users can also use the new app to open a current account and get a virtual debit card to shop online and off. The firm plans to offer savings, credit and investment opportunities in the future. Joining us on the podcast today is Krystian Kolondra, EVP Browsers & EEA Fintech at Opera.
Intro: Welcome to the podcast Interior Integration for Catholics Interior Integration for Catholics brings to you in each episode the best psychological information essential for your human formation, knowledge that is fundamental in shoring up the natural foundation for your Catholic spiritual life. In this podcast, we confront the tough questions we Catholics have in our day-to-day lives, we confront head on our struggles in the natural realm, the psychological difficulties that keep us from fully loving our Lord and our Lady in a deep, personal, intimate way. And we deal with these difficult, demanding issues for one primary reason: to free you to love God our Father, Jesus our Brother, the Holy Spirit and Our Mother Mary more and more over time. And it is titled: Masturbation Recovery Stories We're following up on our last three episodes, number 51, 52 and 53, which have all been about masturbation, the Top 10 reasons why Catholic men masturbate, the 10 common mistakes they make as they try to recover from masturbation and live chaste lives, and the 20 remedies for those 10 common mistakes. we're getting into answers for Catholics who experience masturbation as a dead-end, as a failed promise, as an inadequate answer for their deeper needs and desires. So today, we're pulling all the conceptual information together and we are going to do three things. First, We will briefly review the 10 common mistakes and the 20 remedies for those mistakes Second, will discuss how to make an individualized recovery plan for masturbation Third, we will pull all the information together into the stories of Richard and Luis, who we introduced in episode 51 -- we will review their histories, look at the mistakes they made is trying to free themselves from masturbation, discuss how they made their individualized plans for recovery, and how they broke free from masturbation. Review: 10 Common Mistakes that Catholics make in breaking free from masturbation: Considering masturbation as the primary problem. -- Gotta go deeper Pursuing compartmentalization or fragmentation instead of interior integration Going it alone Using only the spiritual means Having a Power spirituality or a macho spirituality Passive Spirituality The why for the change Shaming the self for failures The All or Nothing Trap Failing to see the struggle with masturbation as a gift 20 Remedies for those mistakes Commit to finding the real reason, with God's help. Bring God or Mary or a saint or your angel into the search for the underlying causes Committing to interior integration: Interior acceptance of all parts, all desires, all impulses, all thoughts, all memories as real -- as part of reality. Therapists -- especially Catholic IFS-informed therapist Sexaholics Anonymous or other groups Online groups -- like the Resilient Catholic Community Embracing the parts that carry our powerlessness, smallness, neediness -- we need those things, they are essential for us to be small enough to approach God. Those parts are precious Focus on Humility. Litany of humility. Litany of Trust Entering into relationship with God as a little child. Let the little children come to me. St. Therese of Lisieux. Serenity Prayer: Pray it every day. And listen. Commit to doing what you can, even it seems like very little. Remembering that as little children we can offer very little. Making a Plan All the above can be overwhelming-- Do I have to do it all? First Overarching principle -- Work your plan out with someone else, someone you trust, someone that you sense is competent to help you. This is vitally important, so you are not repeating mistake number 3, which is going it alone. Talk it out with that person at length. The whys and wherefores of each component of the plan. Second Overarching principle Write out your plan. It all becomes so much when you write it out. Third Overarching principle -- take what is helpful for you in your plan and discard what is not. Be flexible in your plan over time. Fourth overarching principle -- build up your plan. It make take time, build it up over time. General trend over time -- general trajectory Week by week -- once you consolidate a part of your plan, add another part Fifth overarching principle -- adherence to the plan is your target. Stay with the plan. Much more certain than just having periods of abstinence from masturbation Review of Parts IFS by Richard Schwartz IFS on the Self Self defined as the seat of consciousness Self can be occluded or overwhelmed by parts When self accepts and loves parts, those parts transform back into who they were meant to be Self-led mind is self-righting. self -- Active inner leader -- more than mindfulness Parts find the relationship with the self very reassuring Discussion of Parts Separate, seemingly independent little personalities each with its range of emotion, style of expression, abilities, desires, views of the world. Modes of operating Orchestra model Focus is on integration. Get forced into extreme roles -- attachment injuries and relational traumas Three roles Exiles -- most sensitive -- become injured or outraged. Threatens the system, external relationships Exploited, rejected, abandoned in external relationships Want care and love, rescue, redemption shame. Need for redemption Managers Protective, strategic, controlling environment, keep things safe Obsessions. Compulsions, reclusiveness, passivity, numbing. Panic attacks, somatic complaints, depressive episodes, hypervigiliance. Firefighters Stifle, anesthetize, distract from feelings of exiles No concern for consequences Binge eating, drug/alcohol use, dissociation, sexual risk taking, cutting Parts can take over the person Like in Pixar Movie Inside Out -- anger taking over the control panel of the main character Riley We call it blending. Stories Fictional, composites. These are simplified. We will discuss three parts. Usually there are 10-20 parts, sometimes up to 30. Richard: Richard's History Parts mapping -- this is the real story. Church Man -- manager part, strong moral compass, who evaluates Richards' behavior. Take off from the SNL Church Lady from the late 80s. God Image: Demanding Drill Sergeant God, who never satisfied with Richard. This demanding drill sergeant God demands perfection from Richard, and so Church Man is pushing Richard really hard to be good enough to earn God's love. Prayer -- mostly rote, duty-based, not much of a relational connection with God. Assumption is that once he does enough, God might heal him from his sinful ways out of justice. God will owe it to him. Church Man really just wants God to not harm Richard, and be satisfied with the efforts. Self-image -- Church Man sees Richard's other parts as undermining his self-improvement efforts, and placing Richard at risk of God's permanent rejection and disgust. Fear: Church Man fears that if Richard doesn't keep trying and growing, God will reject him permanently. Good intention: To motivate Richard to follow the rules of the Catholic Faith and become worthy of God's acceptance. Absolutely no affairs. No connections to other women. Not repeating what Mom did. Benefits: Excellent quality control at work. Very few mistakes. Generally a lot of self-control Means Used: Badgers Richard, cajoles him. Carrot and stick. Can be really hard on him, shames him, cuts him down Suppresses all other parts. Doesn't trust them. Wants to be the only part operating. Harm done; Unaware of how demoralizing he can be. To Richard's other parts -- crushing burden of shame he creates. And to others -- could be really critical to subordinates and his wife. Seen as cold and rude to women at work -- Talk in the break room among the women was that he was chauvinistic. Distant from daughters. Needy Boy -- exiled part that is very insecure, burdened with unmet needs for maternal care Developmental history Mom stressed with first child, not able to engage consistently -- some post-partum depression. Mom not real regulated to begin with. Unprepared for the demands of motherhood, and Mom had parts that resented both her husband and her son and the loss of her career. Dad was a high-power attorney, dominated by a part that needed to win, needed to overpower and outmaneuver others and never be seen as weak. God image: Elitist Aristocrat God -- God doesn't need him, God doesn't know him, God is too good for him, too remote Not felt seen and known Not felt safe and secure Self Image -- I'm not good enough, lovable enough to gain God's attention. I'm abandoned, alone in the world. I'm not acceptable, he doesn't need me and he doesn't want me. Yearning for redemption, someone, anyone to pay attention to him. Need Boy's Fear -- I am starving, emotionally, relationally. I need to connect and be cared for or I will die. Not able to regulate affect. Distractor -- firefighter part -- Great Fear: Being utterly overwhelmed by the intensity of Needy Boy's pain. When Church Man isn't able to contain Needy Boy, Distractor leaps in to protect Richard's system from the intensity of Needy Boy's intense emotional pain Uses pornography as a primary way of distracting, diverting Needy Boy to a mom-like image. Hope for redemption. Calms things down. Masturbates to distract from Needy Boy's pain. Polarized with Church Man. Doesn't think much about God, A Statue God image, Of the top 10 reasons Catholic men Masturbate #1 Loneliness -- needing maternal and paternal care #2 Insecurity #6 Anger at wife Richard's Plan Of the 10 common mistakes #3 -- Going it alone #4 Using only the spiritual means #5 Power spirituality, building virtue #8 Shaming the self #10 Not seeing his struggle with masturbation as a gift Richard's Recovery Luis Luis' history Seminarian -- 2nd Theology Deep devotion to God Parents married, Dad distant, mom thinks he's a little autistic, not emotionally attuned Very close enmeshed relationship with Mom Part of the reason for going to seminary -- no other men, can be mom's one and only Experiences close relationships as fusion -- blending together. Parts Mapping The Moral Theologian -- intellectual part, very much concerned with right and wrong and appropriate behavior. Deep admirer of St. Thomas Aquinas, his hero Unknowingly departs from the angelic doctor in his devaluing of the Passions Very distrustful of emotions, impulses, desires -- seeks a high-degree of self control Makes careful distinctions first and second moral acts inside him. Strives for objectivity, rationality, intellectual understanding, finds safety and protection in that. God image -- not one of Bill and Kristi Gaultiere's types. God is very fair, very just. Transactional, highly intellectualized view of relating with God. Very suspicious of the Charismatic movement and dislikes most contemporary liturgical music and praise and worship songs. Prays via lectio divina, appreciates the aesthetics of good liturgy, and loves to reflect on the beauty and order of Catholic teaching Uninterested in romantic relationships, finds safety in his friendships with other orthodox seminarians and faculty but hates all the heretical or perceived heretical elements he hears in class or reads about in pastoral theology classes. Relates through a meeting of the minds and is cordial with others, but scans relationships to see if they might negatively impact his search for truth. Very preoccupied with masturbation -- this is the one area that is disordered in Luis' life, the one thing that needs to be straightened out. Only area of grave matter. Self control is shattered. Masturbation is very confusing for the Moral Theologian -- almost like altered states of consciousness, he hates the sense of losing control, and has come to hate aspects of his sexuality, with some desires to be asexual in order to simplify matters. The Moral Theologian could understand it if Origin, as Eusebius claimed, castrated himself, but hoped that he didn't as many other historians arugued because self-mutilation is grave matter Little Husband -- exile. Deep unmet needs for love and care from Mom. Enmeshed with Mom -- emotional incest. Mom's unhappy marriage, seeking to get her relational needs met by Luis. Little Husband was the part of Luis that Mom's protector parts exploited in an attempt to feel better about herself and to get her own needs met. When Luis was a little boy, his Little husband part learned that if he listened to Mom's problems, if he reassured her, if he affirmed her, if he joined her in criticizing Dad as a poor husband and father, he would then get her attention and she would show him affection. If he felt the way she did, if he mirrored her, if he fused with her, Mom would reward him with affirmation, and sometime she went over the top, covering his face with kisses and hugging him close and weeping, and telling him how much he meant to her, how important he was to her, how much she needed him, which was frightening to him, to see her so regressed. But he couldn't break away from Mom or risk losing almost all his emotional connection, given that his father was distant and there were no other major relationships in his life. Self-image: Little husband saw himself as his mother's support, her emotional refuge, her caregiver, her protector in a sense, her little husband. He existed to serve her needs. God-Image: So Little Husband saw God as needy and kind of emotionally unbalanced, prone to rages and also to overwhelmingly intense displays of affection. Little Husband had a Magic Genie God image. He had to give God whatever He wanted for that affection, even if meant violations of boundaries, violations of dignity. Doesn't want to displease Mom. Doesn't want to be unfaithful to her, and to meeting her needs. Recognizes the sacrifices she is making by allowing him to go to seminary. Gladiator -- Exile Rebellious toward authority, feels he is enslaved by others parts who are subservient to Mom Hates Mom's invasions and intrusions. This part hates Mom, feels like identity is being stolen, hates being used. Suppressed by the Moral Theologian from an early age -- Polarization -- because of the danger he represents in acting out Willing to take huge risks because life as an oppressed slave is hardly worth living. Robber God image -- God takes good things away from me Anger at God -- assumed God is like Mom. Fear of God fusing with him. Self-image: I've got to grab on to any goods I can get. This part masturbates. Of the Top 10 reasons why Catholic men masturbate #1 Loneliness, lack of relational connection #3 Cry for help (single symptom presentation) #4 Anger at God #5 Regulating distance from God -- preventing enmeshment Luis' Plan The Common Mistakes #1 Masturbation as the primary problem #2 Compartmentalization --> fragmentation #7 The Why for the Change #8 Shaming the Self #9 The All or Nothing Trap #10 Not Seeing the Struggle as a Gift. An Internal Family Systems-Informed Approach to Parts' Negative God Images" Here we get into how different parts see God. Lots of experiential work. Get in touch with me on my cell at 317.567.9594 or my email at crisis@soulsandhearts.com -- we're still small enough in January 2021 that I can respond to everybody. It's about being together as Catholics on a journey, on a mission to really enter into an intimate personal relationship with Jesus Christ our brother, the Holy Spirit who is Love Himself and with our spiritual parents, God the Father and Mary our Mother. It's about sharing our experiences in that journey on that mission. Get on the waiting list soulsandhearts.com/rccd so you will get information before the general public does. Intro: Welcome to the podcast Interior Integration for Catholics -- the podcast formerly known as Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem! Interior Integration for Catholics brings to you in each episode the best psychological information essential for your human formation, knowledge that is fundamental in shoring up the natural foundation for your Catholic spiritual life. This podcast is part of Souls and Hearts, our online outreach at soulsandhearts.com, which is all about shoring up our natural foundation for the Catholic spiritual life, all about overcoming psychological obstacles to being loved and to loving God and neighbor This is episode 53, released on February 1, 2021 This is the fifth episode in our series on sexuality and the third one on masturbation. And it is titled: Breaking Free from Masturbation, Part 2 We're following up on our last episode, episode 52 -- Breaking free from masturbation Part 1. Part 2 is following Part 1. So today, we're continuing with finding answers for Catholics who deeply desire to have their sexuality ordered toward relationship, toward God, and toward their spouses or future spouses in a way that is life-giving. we're getting into answers for Catholics who experience masturbation as a dead-end, as a failed promise, as an inadequate answer for their deeper needs and desires. We address 6 more mistakes that Catholics make in their attempts to overcome masturbation And we will get into 10 more remedies for those additional six mistakes, and the last remedy is the most important one -- so important that I think of it as the secret solution, the one so few people who struggle with masturbation really consider, so we're saving the best for last there. Not just about masturbation -- you can take out masturbation and substitute in any other sexual problem -- fetishes, porn, sexting, sexual obsessions, sexual compulsions, excessive sexual fantasies, whatever People are also finding that these episodes are helpful for getting to the root any symptomatic behavior -- binge eating, excessive shopping or video games, too much vegging out on Netflix, and so on. Just to review, in the last episode, I promised you a map, not a ride in a limousine or on a flying carpet to your destination. It's a map, not an individualized treatment plan. This is not therapy. It's not magic. You still have to make your own journey. But this map lays out the terrain and the compass will provide direction for you on that journey. Some of you have been suffering for a long time. I get that. God sees your efforts, he sees your good intentions. Focus of this podcast is on interior integration -- overarching goal in the natural realm. Not talking about spiritual goals here, we are talking about the natural realm. So we need a way of understanding and modeling interior integration and also its nemesis -- interior fragmentation. I borrow heavily from Internal Family Systems approach, aka IFS approach, originated by Richard Schwartz. I reviewed it in the last episode, number 52. Parts are like personalities within us. Imagine a kid who is considering taking a cookie from the cookie jar. One part of him wants to have the cookie and another part wants him to be good and not have to struggle with a guilty conscience, and another part doesn't want to face Mom's anger if he gets caught. Mistakes List of mistakes Review of the first four Considering masturbation as the primary problem. -- Gotta go deeper Pursuing compartmentalization or fragmentation instead of interior integration Going it alone Using only the spiritual means Here are the next six Having a Power spirituality or a macho spirituality Passive Spirituality The why for the change Shaming the self for failures The All or Nothing Trap The biggest Mistake, the one almost everybody makes with this. Stay tuned till the end Mistake 5: Power spirituality -- Macho spirituality Slogan for the Power Spirituality -- God helps those who help themselves In February of 2000 George Barna did a poll asking if “The Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves” and the results were eye-opening: 53% of Americans agree strongly [that it could be found in the Bible] 22% agree somewhat 7% disagree somewhat 14% disagree strongly 5% stated they don't know Of “born-again” Christians 68% agreed, and 81% of non “born-again” Christians agreed with the statement. Despite being of non-Biblical origin, the phrase topped a poll of the most widely known Bible verses. Seventy-five percent (75%) of American teens said they believed that it was the central message of the Bible. This saying is ancient, goes back to Greece -- The Gods help those who help themselves, you see this expressed in two of Aesop's fables Aesop was an extraordinarily ugly slave who by his wit and intelligence gains his freedom and becomes a counsellor to rulers in Greece. He is believed to have lived between 620 and 564 BC -- his stories may be much older than that, having been handed down in an oral tradition. A WAGGONER was once driving a heavy load along a very muddy way. At last he came to a part of the road where the wheels sank half-way into the mire, and the more the horses pulled, the deeper sank the wheels. So the Waggoner threw down his whip, and knelt down and prayed to Hercules the Strong. “O Hercules, help me in this my hour of distress,” quoth he. But Hercules appeared to him, and said: “Tut, man, don't sprawl there. Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel." “The gods help them that help themselves.” 17th Century English political theorist Algernon Sidney made the modern rendering in English. My grandpa Roberts used it a lot as well. Focus on will power, will training. Limitation of will power A part with a focus on building virtues, but not deepening relationship with Christ Defense against fear of perpetual failure. Connects back to Mistake 3 -- Going it alone. This is a lonely spirituality, very independent Fatal flaw -- it doesn't recognize our complete dependence on God. Power of Positive Thinking. Norman Vincent Peal. Proverbs 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart, is a fool: but he that walketh wisely, he shall be saved. Part that is reaching for omnipotence. Doesn't want utter dependence on God Without me you can do nothing. John 15:5 Remedy 11: Embracing the parts that carry our powerlessness, smallness, neediness -- we need those things, they are essential for us to be small enough to approach God. Those parts are precious. Their burdens of shame, despair, anger, etc. -- those are not necessary. works of St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Better than reading just reading their works, enter into prayer with them. John 15:5: I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. Remedy 12: Focus on Humility. Litany of humility. Litany of Trust Remedy 13: Entering into relationship with God as a little child. Let the little children come to me. St. Therese of Lisieux. Chapter 1 of Spiritual Childhood by Fr. Vernon Johnson on the Fatherhood of God. Ignatius Press 1953. Weaving Scripture verses. Abba, Pater. Mama Mary My Ideal: Jesus Son of Mary, Fr. Emile Neubert, Tan books. Episode 30 -- How Small and Childlike are We Supposed to Be? Mistake 6. Passive Spirituality The prayer -- Oh Dear God, please lift the scourge of masturbation from me. I am helpless in its grip. Flip side of the power spirituality -- sometimes when the power spirituality fails, we relapse into this Recognizes the powerlessness, smallness and neediness that we all have. A different part takes over, one that copes by collapsing and passively waiting for rescue Or a part that just gives up. Accommodates the masturbation. Expectation of God doing all the work. Miraculous intervention -- in its extreme form, there's more or less a fantasy of falling asleep one night, and God performing a masturbationectomy -- removing all desires and impulses toward masturbation. No psychological miracles in the Scripture Correct me if I'm wrong on this Not violating the will and the intellect Parts holding tightly to the function of the masturbation -- this aligns with mistake 1 -- which is that the masturbation is the problem. Example of our Lady at the Annunciation. Remedy 14 To balance the Power spirituality and the passive Spirituality 20th Century Protestant theologian, thinker, and author Reinhold Neibuhr Serenity Prayer: Pray it every day. And listen. God, grant me the SerenityTo accept the things I cannot change...Courage to change the things I can,And Wisdom to know the difference. There is a longer version, that is much more complete. God, give us grace to accept with serenitythe things that cannot be changed,Courage to change the thingswhich should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguishthe one from the other. Living one day at a time,Enjoying one moment at a time,Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,Taking, as Jesus did,This sinful world as it is,Not as I would have it,Trusting that You will make all things right,If I surrender to Your will,So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen. There's reason this is so important in 12-step programs Remedy 15: Commit to doing what you can, even it seems like very little. Remembering that as little children we can offer very little. God in his justice doesn't demand more. That's not even mercy. Mistake 7. The Why for the Change -- motives. Seeking and finding. Problematic motives that can lead us away from our Lord. These motives may not necessarily be bad in and of themselves, but when they are elevated above the two great commandments, they become problematic. Our motives vary by parts. Parts have different motives for wanting to get over masturbation Often our motives are Self-perfection, or if not self-perfection at least becoming good enough aspiring to Phariseeism Often can't see our own motives. Blind spots. Outward vs. Inward focus Or an inward focus that includes God. God often wants to improve our motives. Remedy 16: Exploring and discussing our motives with our trusted person. Ask that person how he or she sees our motives. Remedy 17: Bringing those motives to prayer. Lord that I may see. Prayer of blind Bartimeus. Domine ut vidiam. Mistake 8. Shaming the self for failures Shame series -- episodes 37 to 49, and in episodes 37 and 38 we got into definitions of shame as a verb. Shame can motivate -- Internal critic part -- whipping us into shape. Shame is inhibiting -- can inhibit certain behaviors like masturbation Difference in usefulness of shame for chronic vs. single episode actions Remedy 18: really working with our internal critic. Understanding the reasons for the shaming, the good that the critic seeks in that -- and helping that critic integrate with the rest of your system, under the leadership of your core self. Often find that the critic is very young and very fearful and very overwhelmed with all the responsibilities of its role of directing and guiding and critiquing. Mistake 9. The All or nothing trap -- all or nothing thinking, all or nothing judgement. All or nothing effort. Accepting falling and rising. As many times as it takes. Accepting imperfections -- with the saints. Saints descriptions of themselves. Greater demands Omissions vs. commission. Comfort in the familiarity of the vices I know. Remedy 19. Perseverance. It's normal to fall. We are fallen human beings in a fallen world. We need to get up. Every time. Review of the 5 Mistakes, and the remedies here. Mistake 10. The big one. Failing to see the struggle with masturbation as a gift This is a tough one. Not the act of masturbation -- sinning itself not a gift. The struggle is a cross, not a gift. Even our crosses are gifts. Romans 8:28. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. No exceptions, not like All things…good except for masturbation -- you got that, well, buddy that is just too bad, there's nothing Remedy 20: Seeking for how the struggle with masturbation is a gift. Not the sin itself, but the struggle. Many people never seek to understand their trials, their suffering as a gift You can suffer as a rebels You can suffer as a stoic, but not willingly. Journaling about this, discussing it with your trusted other, opening a dialog Praying about it. Asking to see. Blind Bartimeus prayer Paul discovered it in 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 7 And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn[a] was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. 8 Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; 9 but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Wrap up So in the next episode, we will go back to the stories of Luis and Richard that we started in Episode 51 -- remember, Luis was the seminarian and Richard was the 48 year old married man, father of four and both were struggling with masturbation but for very different reasons. The symptoms were similar, but the underlying causes were different. So we will bring all the concepts from the last three sessions together and flesh them out in the lives of our characters. Feedback. Let me know how these episodes are landing with you -- -- some of you already have. Get in touch with me on my cell at 317.567.9594 or my email at crisis@soulsandhearts.com -- we're still small enough in January 2021 that I can respond to everybody. February 19, 2021 -- 10 AM to 1:15 PM Eastern time. I have been invited to do a webinar for the Catholic Psychotherapy Association entitled "Why Do I Avoid God? An Internal Family Systems-Informed Approach to Parts' Negative God Images" Here we get into how different parts see God. Lots of experiential work. For information and registration go to catholicpsychotherapy.org/events We have the Resilient Catholic community. That community is about transformation, about preparing the way for love in our souls. Those on the waiting list -- thank you for your patience, hoping to reopen the community in April. Will do a bonus podcast -- community members -- experiential exercise on seeing my main trouble-- whatever that struggle is -- as a gift. What gets in the way? How are my protector parts reacting to my main struggle? How do my protectors see that main issue? And how can we help them? Those bonus podcasts come out on Tuesday, one day later, so this one will release on February 2, 2021. We have our Second Wednesday Zoom meeting coming up from 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 for Resilient Catholic Community members, and it's all about healthy sexuality and how parts are sexualized in certain kinds of experiences, and how that affects our sexual experiences and functioning later in life. Bonus podcast for our Catholic Therapists in the Interior Therapist Community in Souls and hearts with more on how to help yourself and your clients unpack the polarization of their parts, and how your parts might be activated by some of your client's polarizations. Super excited -- reopening that community in March, experiential groups for human formation of Catholic Therapists from an IFS-informed perspective. IIC 53A "My main trouble" Not specific to masturbation -- could be any struggle And it makes sense, given how parts view their experience. But parts have blind spots. My Main Trouble exercise Big open heart, appreciating parts Parts have good intentions. Protectors are trying really hard to protect us. Cautions -- difficult material -- window of tolerance, don't have to do this, no steamrolling parts Reassuring parts that we are not working with the main trouble in this exercise. We're not unpacking it or going into it. We're addressing why it is hard to see that main trouble as a gift. Checking inside. What parts are up as we consider the main trouble Main trouble = the single most distressing thing --> just giving it a label, not unpacking it. Listening to parts. What would they need to begin to consider this trouble, struggle as a gift? Writing down what they say. Issues around gifts Issues around crosses Issues around God Gratitude to parts. IIC 53T Working with clients' protectors around the gift of troubles. Start with ourselves -- exercise we can use Remember to customize these exercises, using the client's language Providential worldview -- single most important predictor of treatment outcome for my clients You can do this with your clients Watch out for aligning too much with one part of a client.
