Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but not any jewelry is a good gift. You'll be surprised to know some pieces of it, like a cursed pearl, can destroy marriages! And that certainly makes that jewelry a girl's worst enemy. One pearl in particular managed to make plenty of enemies over centuries of ruining its owners' love lives. For about 300 years, the infamous La Peregrina pearl was the largest to have ever been found, originally weighing in just shy of 56 carats or about 11 grams. King Philip presented his new bride with the mesmerizing pearl as a wedding present. Mary and Philip never got divorced, but it is known that the king left her not long after tying the knot. And that was only the beginning of the pearl's adventures. Other videos you might like: The Story of the Hope Diamond Which Ruined Its Owners' Lives • The Story of the Hope Diamond Which R... An English mathematician, court astronomer to Elizabeth I, astrologer, teacher, occultist, alchemist, and messenger of Angels? Dee claimed to talk with Angels with the help of a black mirror. Afton, Hallie and Isabel describe the disgusting life and proclivities of Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, a Hungarian known as the "Blood Countess" and one of the earliest recorded serial killers.
England was quite late to the North American party, yet ultimately established the most enduring and therefore consequential settlements. An overview of England of the 1500s, economically, politically, and geopolitically, is useful, even essential, to understanding how English North America unfolded. By 1572, England was firmly in Protestant hands, had its own ambitions for overseas expansion, and was increasingly working to constrain Spanish power without starting a war it would probably lose. Elizabeth I was on the throne and had been for 13 years, and she had surrounded herself with a group of advisors who were very much concerned with extending English power into the world at large. The question is, how did England get to that point? This week's episode, titled “England in the 1500s and the Rise of the Merchant Adventurers,” rolls us back in time to get to that very question. #VastEarlyAmerica https://subscribebyemail.com/thehistoryoftheamericans.com/?feed=podcast References for this episode John Butman and Simon Targett, New World, Inc.: How England's Merchants Founded America and Launched the British Empire Samuel Bawlf, The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake: 1577-1580

In this episode, we return to Oliver Cromwell to discuss what we weren't able to in Episode 17: Cromwell's politics, and his tenure as Lord Protector. Taking us through his complex life and political career is Martyn Bennett, Professor at Nottingham Trent University, and author of the book Cromwell at War. With him, we take a look at what makes Cromwell so complicated: from his beliefs of religious freedom clashing with his actions in Ireland, to his desire for a democracy in spite of his absolute power over the country, and much more. The story of the complex relationship between the Russians and their southern and eastern neighbours in 1400s-early 1500's. Those neighbours were the successor states of the once mighty Mongol-Tatar empire known as the Golden Horde; the khanates of Kazan, Crimea, Siberia, the Great Horde and Nogay Horde. These relationships were at least as important to Muscovy as those with her western neighbours.
