FC Barcelona. Arsenal. Chelsea. This week, that trio of top European clubs toured the United States. But why? Meg Linehan and Steph Yang unpack why more individual European pre-season friendlies are occurring across the Atlantic, and what the trend might be a sign of things to come. What can we learn from analyzing both the on-pitch and off-pitch gains? Should we be talking more about player load and fixture congestion? Is the NWSL a threat-come-inspiration to the WSL's commercial targets? Having been in Washington D.C. to cover Arsenal and Chelsea's co-tour, Steph expands on what she learned from spending time with the WSL coaches. She also shares some of the details of cross-club business growth from her sit down with Washington Spirit owner Michelle Kang. One of The Athletic's Arsenal writers, Are de Roché then joined the podcast to compare and contrast previous U.S. tours involving the Gunners' men's team. In addition to all that, there's also time to talk about the Abby Dahlkemper trade, Megan Rapinoe's jersey retirement, and so much more NWSL action. _______________ HOST: Meg Linehan GUEST: Steph Yang, Art de Roché PRODUCER: Theo Lloyd-Hughes VIDEO PRODUCER: Lia Griffin EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: Emily Olsen _______________ Articles mentioned on the podcast: Michele Kang's global investment in women's soccer on display with Arsenal, Chelsea friendlies NWSLPA announces initial list of players eligible for league's first free agency under new CBA ________________ Get in touch: fulltime@theathletic.com Follow on Instagram and TikTok: @tafulltime Subscribe to the Full Time newsletter here. Sandra Herrera and Lisa Roman prepare for the 2022 NWSL Season with a full San Diego Wave FC preview. One of the two newest expansion clubs in the NWSL starts their inaugural season with a coach familiar with new clubs, Casey Stoney will lead the Wave in 2022 along with Molly Downtain as GM and Richard Gunny as the First Assistant. Sandra and Lisa run through the off-season signings for San Diego and which players stand out the most - the first-ever club signing in defender Abby Dahlkemper, the USWNT star Alex Morgan or Swedish International Sofia Jakobsson. Because San Diego is an expansion club, they have no detrimental losses and a preseason roster full of big signings hoping to intimidate the other 11 NWSL clubs including #1 overall draft pick, defender Naomi Girma (13:50). The biggest burning question for San Diego heading into their very first season: Can SD Wave FC break the “expansion team” cycle and make the playoffs? Listen to hear the A3 projected finish for San Diego based on the pre-season roster and what we know about the head coach Casey Stoney. In the second half of the episode, Sandra Herrera and Lisa Roman prepare for the 2022 NWSL Season with a full San Diego Wave FC preview and exclusive interview with San Diego Wave forward Kelsey Turnbow (38:04). Kelsey discusses her decision to return to college after being drafted in 2021 by the Chicago Red Stars and how she was traded to San Diego Wave. After playing for five seasons at Santa Clara, Kelsey is thrilled to stay in California for another year with Santa Clara. She discusses the transition from the college game to the NWSL laughing about the bruises and cuts she has on her legs but saying she thrives in the competitive environment. Abby Dahlkemper and Maggie Steffens both graduated high school in the same year, as part of the Class of 2011. And for the past decade, they've been among the very best players in their sport. Both are competing in the Tokyo Olympics this summer. One has gone with a focus on stopping goals, while the other will be trying to score as many as possible. Dahlkemper is a starting defender on the US Women's National Soccer Team. And while she's already a World Cup champion, this is Dahlkemper's first Olympics. Steffens — who graduated from Monte Vista High in Danville the same year Dahlkemper graduated from Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton — is now at her third Summer Games as a member of the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team. In the second of our two Olympian-themed episode, we revisited the rise of the two 2011 graduates through memories and tales of high school coaches who still remain in contact with their former players to this day. Join us as we highlight two of the Bay Area's most successful female athletes of the past decade. This is SportStories. STORYTELLERS Jake Moffat — Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton Girls Soccer Coach (2005-2011) Scott Getty — Monte Vista-Danville Girls Water Polo Coach (2007-2010)
We have quite a bit to recap on Episode 35 of the Stars & Stripes FC Podcast! This week, Olympic qualifying dates have been announced! We discuss the tournament down in Mexico and what the United States U-23s have to do in order to make it to Tokyo for this summer’s Olympics. There were also a few transfers worth noting, from Mark McKenzie moving to Genk to Bryan Reynolds’ rumored move to Juventus (and Benevento). There’s also some transfers on the women’s side, with Catarina Macario signing with Lyon and Abby Dahlkemper possibly moving to Manchester City.. After the break, André Perea files a one-time switch to join the USMNT from Colombia, and Catarina Macario is now eligible to play for the USWNT! We discuss those additions to the national team player pools. Finally, the NWSL Draft was Wednesday night, but we discuss the absurd number of timeouts which contributed to the Draft lasting almost 5 hours! We close with a note on all the new feature columns you have seen or will see on the site over the coming weeks. Hope you’re enjoying the new columns, and we hope to bring you more as the year progresses, including some changes to the podcast! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
