Arsenal took down West Ham 4-3 in the most thrilling game of the WSL season so far! What a match, and of course Sara & Allie had to break it down as game of the week, since it is also the Women's Soccer Show Derby (Sara's team vs. Allie's team). It's all WSL this week, as the two then dive into Brighton's draw with Chelsea and Girma's unfortunate injury. Next, it's onto some news including player movement and why the WSL eliminating relegation is a REAL future that we may have to accept and soon. Would that be good or bad for the WSL? Elsewhere, we take a deep-dive into Simon and Liam's big read about the club's efforts to get over their recent slump - and the role that some of the senior figures have played in uniting the young squad. Over in the WSL, it was an incident-filled 2-2 draw for Sonia Bompastor's side against Brighton on Sunday. Jessy Parker Humphreys was there to witness Naomi Girma's long-awaited debut. In today's episode, an instalment of the Readings Kids Podcast, and an interview with Tigest Girma, author of Immortal Dark. The first in a new fantasy trilogy, Readings' own Angela Crocombe wrote that Immortal Dark is ‘a fascinating world incorporating African myth and characters, who just happen to live in close proximity with vampires,' and that ‘it features sophisticated writing with compelling, three-dimensional characters and intricate world-building.' Orphan Kidan Adane is the heiress to a fallen House of humans bound to vampiric creatures known as draniacs. As a human, it is her responsibility to study and nurture the relationships between draniacs and humans at Uxlay University. But when her sister is kidnapped and Kidan suspects that her own house draniac, the enigmatic Susenyos, is to blame, she heads down a violent path towards vengeance, willing to hurt anyone who stands in her way.
We were in awe chatting with the wise, big magic human that is THE Tigest Girma @tigestgirma
It began long before my time, but something has always hunted our family. Orphaned heiress Kidan Adane grew up far from the arcane society she was born into, where human bloodlines gain power through vampire companionship. When her sister, June, disappears, Kidan is convinced a vampire stole her—the very vampire bound to their family, the cruel yet captivating Susenyos Sagad. To find June, Kidan must infiltrate the elite Uxlay University—where students study to ensure peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires and inherit their family legacies. Kidan must survive living with Susenyos—even as he does everything he can to drive her away. It doesn't matter that Susenyos's wickedness speaks to Kidan's own violent nature and tempts her to surrender to a life of darkness. She must find her sister and kill Susenyos at all costs. When a murder mirroring June's disappearance shakes Uxlay, Kidan sinks further into the ruthless underworld of vampires, risking her very soul. There she discovers a centuries-old threat—and June could be at the center of it. To save her sister, Kidan must bring Uxlay to its knees and either break free from the horrors of her own actions or embrace the dark entanglements of love—and the blood it requires.
Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros recap the midweek MLS Cup Playoff matches where Cincinnati beat NYCFC & New York Red Bulls take down the Columbus Crew. Elsewhere in the MLS, the Seattle Sounders and Minnesota United beat their opponents in penalty shootouts, begging the question of if this best-of-three format is the best way for the MLS to handle first-round playoff matches. Christian and Alexis are joined by Bryan Ford, award-winning baker, author of Pan y Dulce, TV host of Baked in Tradition, and judge on BRBC. Bryan shares his love of Latin-American baking and his experiences playing soccer growing up. Bryan also tells the story of how he got his coaching license and he and Alexis wax poetic about their mutual love of Arsenal (because of course they do).The two raise a glass to Naomi Girma who scored her first two international goals for the USWNT in a match vs. Argentina. Season 9 of ‘The Dark Academicals' is HERE - we're back! - and we're starting off with a huge debut that is being marketed as dark academia Black vampires and honestly, say less.Hidden in our world, a society of vampires originating in Africa, can only feed from select human bloodlines. Each bloodline represents a House more cutthroat than the next. To ensure peaceful co-existence and inherit their legacy, human children of these families must study at an elite university before choosing a vampire companion.Lost Heiress, Kidan Adane grew up far from Uxlay University. She is obsessively protective, mildly nihilistic, and willing to do anything to save her loved ones. When her sister, June, disappears, Kidan is convinced a vampire stole her - the alluring yet dangerous Susenyos Sagad, the same vampire bound to her own House. To stay in Uxlay, Kidan must study an arcane philosophy, work with four enigmatic students, and survive living with Susenyos - even as he does everything to drive her away. It doesn't matter that Susenyos' violence speaks to her own and tempts Kidan to surrender to a life of darkness. She must find her sister and kill him at all costs. When a murder mirroring June's disappearance shakes Uxlay, Kidan sinks further into the ruthless underworld of vampires, risking her very soul. Here, she discovers a centuries-old threat. And June could be at the very centre of it.The Cruel Prince meets Ninth House in this dangerously romantic dark academia debut, where a lost heiress must infiltrate a secret society and live with the vampire she suspects kidnapped her sister. With calls to ‘Ninth House' and ‘The Cruel Prince', vampires and a whole new mythology, this could be starting off the season with a bang. But how does this fantasy really live up to the tropes of dark academia? In this episode we discuss:Vampire lore within literatureThe cause and effect of genre and literary categorisationSusenyos, Kidan, and everything it could have been.
