Seven games, six road victories, four of them shutouts. It was a weird weekend in the NWSL, and the guys scan the ups and downs from all of the action (1:14). Then, they peruse Gotham's 3-1 home victory over the North Carolina Courage (23:01). Each club had a starting center back missing, but only one didn't play like it. Is Gotham the sleeping giant that has finally awoken? Has North Carolina reached the end of the road with Nahas-Ball, especially since Jaedyn Shaw and Ashley Sanchez really aren't clicking? What does this result portend for the rest of Gotham's and North Carolina's seasons?  Join our Patreon for only $6/month ($60/year) to get all of our exclusive bonus content! One for them, one for us. The USWNT beat Brazil fairly comfortably in Trinity Rodman's return to the U.S. lineup in front of over 32,000 in Los Angeles, while an incredibly green squad went down 2-1 to the Seleção in San Jose. The guys tackle Saturday's victory first (3:05) before noting that each friendly was a mirror image of each other from a tactical and personnel perspective (7:11). This leads into figuring out who might now be at the top of the USWNT goalkeeper depth chart. (16:47) The guys then analyze Tuesday's loss, which highlighted the work still to be done by Emma Hayes and co. (35:06). They scratch their heads at the usage of Jaedyn Shaw over the past year (39:46), while trying to determine what Alana Cook's substitute appearance means for the center back depth chart (44:54). They close with an overview of news contained in the release of the new NWSL collective bargaining agreement, and whether there are big format changes coming in the next few years (46:37). It felt right to throw our support behind these institutions that elevate Black intelligence and talent, celebrate our many accomplishments and leaders, and educate Black people in a country that continues to fight against it. We're in the middle of the transfer window and NWSL training camps have only just started, but that's not going to stop us from previewing the upcoming 2025 NWSL season. In this episode, Dino and Grant are joined by Mike Watts, one of the longtime voices of the NWSL across multiple networks. Mike gave us some great stories from discussions he had with coaches and club executives last season and was just an overall good dude to chat with. We ended up bouncing around a little bit, so we touched on the recent Jaedyn Shaw news, how he thinks the top-4 will shake out this year, how he defines "team culture" based on what he sees from each club, who from the broadcast teams picks the coffee joints and restaurants on the road, and so much more. The USWNT are BACK and so are Courtney & André! We discuss the back-to-back 3-1 wins versus Iceland (or New Zealand, if you're espnW). Then we look ahead to the third match of this window against Argentina, and who we want to see on the pitch. We discuss Alyssa Thompson's PhD dissertation from the CP23 School of Finishing, Jaedyn Shaw's absolutely saucy dribble and finish, and Sophia Smith's half volley. We also get into the midfield issues, and why the team currently needs to rely on individual brilliance from attackers. We look at the midfield, which continues to be a weak spot. We talk about what's going wrong, and tactical and/or personnel changes that could help (ahem-LilyYohannes-ahem). Then we pick out players we want to see line up against Argentina. The USA Soccercast recaps the USWNT's October window on Episode 119. The October window was a bit of a struggle for the USWNT, as they played Colombia in two friendlies last weekend. The first match was a scoreless stalemate, with the USWNT looking like they had not attempted to change anything from what we had seen this year leading into the Women's World Cup. In the second friendly, the first half repeated some of those failed tactics and personnel decisions. However, with the substitution of a couple of the new young players at halftime, the dynamic changed. We discuss how Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw should prompt a hard review of the program and should renew the desire by many to integrate the youth into the fabric of this team to make it theirs, especially with the W Gold Cup and the Olympics approaching in 2024. After the break, the USWNT head coaching search could be near its end, and U.S. Soccer appears to be down to three finalists: Australia head coach Tony Gustavsson, Juventus head coach Joe Montemurro, and OL Reign FC head coach Laura Harvey. We discuss what some of the pros and cons are with these coaches, as well as what the priorities should be for the program with the hiring of the next head coach.
