Shred With Shifty
Brad Paisley's G-Bender Magic on “Mud on the Tires”

"It's maybe the most important thing to me that the solos [I record] are things that I haven't done a million times," country guitarist and singer/songwriter Brad Paisley shares on this episode of Shred With Shifty. "That's getting harder and harder to do." But as Paisley walks host Chris Shiflett through his solo on "Mud on the Tires," the centerpiece of the interview, it's clear that Paisley can improvise melodies that don't necessarily need to clear that bar in order to hook and make a lasting impression on his listeners. Brad was learning Chet Atkins-style thumbpicking in lessons from the age of 12, and while he later absorbed a rock vocabulary, Shifty comments that Brad always seems to play with a country feel. Throughout the episode, Brad frequently illustrates his points by playing riffs, in a way that shows that his connection with the instrument is a fluid one and a key part of how he expresses himself. "Mud on the Tires" was originally recorded 20 years ago, in 2003. Brad's setup was either his '68 Paisley Tele or '52 Tele, recorded through a '63 AC30 and a Dr. Z Z 28, the latter of which was run through a 15" JBL speaker. As he puts it, the AC30 fills the frequency gaps left by the Fender, making the combination a perfect sonic marriage. He says that live, he normally plays the solo on a guitar he's nicknamed "Splash," and they've had to replace the nut on it three times, due to how Paisley bends the 4th string on the space behind it at a certain point in the solo. While rockin' his G bender, Brad has some trouble executing the solo's most elaborate middle riff during the solo breakdown, but his incredible chops pull through towards the end of the ep as he whips out the impressive lick. Shifty encourages followers to see if they can match it! That might be a tall order, but it is all part of the fun. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, U2, Queen, Brad Paisley. What do they all have in common? They are part of the story of the iconic tone that is Vox Amplification. Starting out, I was a Fender guy. Early professional, I made my way to Vox Modeling amps. Professional, I rocked a Marshall half stack. Now I play them all when I can but when I fly into a gig I generally ask for Vox. Of course, over time I had a lot of trial and error but it wasn't until I played a cranked Vox AC15 or AC30 that I realized that I had missed the boat and there is something special… even magical about a Vox amplifier. But what era is the best? Who do we know that plays these stellar amps? Where did the name Vox come from? Is there a difference tonally from amp to amp? What is a warfdale? Are Greenbacks or Blue's better? Can you still find an AC30 for less than $500? What do the numbers mean? And settings… how do you find your Vox tone? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, and many more used and sponsored VOX during their career. But what makes it so special? And why is the AC30 the staple of rock and roll amps? When Chris Shiflett left No Use for a Name and joined the Foo Fighters in 1999, he almost had no gear. The band was rehearsing to support their third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, and leader Dave Grohl was doing an inventory check on their newest member. “Dave asked me how many guitars I had, and I said, ‘Well, I have two, but one has a broken headstock,'” recalls Shiflett. “Dave chuckled and said, ‘We gotta get you a few more guitars.'” The duo ventured down to Sunset Boulevard hitting all the guitar shops and Grohl gifted Shifty a pair of Gibsons (that we'll meet later). (This story is even more proof that Grohl is one of the coolest rock stars ever.) “I had been going to some of those Sunset stores since I was a teenager, and they're never nice to you because they know you're not buying anything. So, when I went in there with Dave Grohl and his AmEx card, it was a real moment for me. Here I am joining my dream band, and he's like, get whatever you want … and he really meant it!” Shiflett's gear germination didn't stop there. “When I joined the band, I didn't have any pedals. And now my bandmates constantly make fun of me for the size of my pedalboard—it's ridiculously big and there are a lot of pedals on it—but my view has always been, ‘as long as I don't have to carry it around, bring them all [laughs].'” But they all serve a purpose and allow Chris to stand out in a three-guitar band. “I do love that my role in Foos over the years has become the color guy with all these pedals.” His growth as an artist doesn't stop there. Shiflett's put out punk albums in Jackson United and for nearly 25 years, he sparked endless good times in the best punk-rock cover band (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). In 2010, he shifted his creative outlet to busting out alt-country twangers and Bakersfield barroom bruisers as Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants, and then, later, solo. Since 2013, he's been hosting a podcast (https://walkingthefloor.com/ (Walking The Floor with Chris Shiflett)) that's featured conversations with https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/mammoth-wvh (Wolfgang Van Halen), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/mike-campbell-rides-again (Mike Campbell), https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/greta-van-fleet-2021 (Greta Van Fleet), https://www.premierguitar.com/rig-rundown-billy-strings (Billy Strings), and recent Rig Rundown subject https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/marcus-king (Marcus King). Where does the dude find the time?! Following Foo Fighter's recent Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at L.A.'s Kia Forum to honor their dearly departed drummer, Shiflett carved out some precious time and invited PG's Chris Kies to the Foo's HQ, Studio 606. The laidback conversation covered his essential live guitars (including a not-so-golden '57 Les Paul and a few gracious gifts from Grohl), some custom Friedmans, and a pair of unusual AC30 stacks that only he and Sir Paul have … and all his pedals that sting, sparkle, shimmer, and sizzle.

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/XKmN-Dykgjk We demo the Strymon Iridium amp, cab and room simulator pedal alongside Vox AC30 and Fender Super Reverb guitar amplifiers. We use a selection of effects pedals including overdrive, fuzz & delay. Life too short for long YouTube videos? See ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ below. Welcome! Regular viewers will know that Dan and I aren’t regular users of digital modelling amps and cabs. Why? Well, because we own pretty much all the real stuff and we absolutely love playing it for a whole host of reasons.Nevertheless, we are genuinely intrigued by the Strymon Iridium because of its simplicity, form factor and adaptability into traditional pedalboards. That is what this video is about, plus some comparisons with some ‘real’ amps. Thus… WHAT AM I HEARING?The actual valve amps are mic’d with Sontronics Delta 2 ribbon mics on the cabs, plus a pair of AKG C414 XLS mid-side for stereo room mics. They go into a Universal Audio Apollo 8p interface running Neve 1073 mic preamp plugins. The Iridium is going direct to stereo channels in the Apollo 8p with no additional preamps. It is a purely direct signal: no microphones. In the studio we are hearing the Iridium’s direct sound through 1500-watt EV PA speakers. WHY DIDN’T YOU USE A FENDER DELUXE REVERB?We don’t own one. We do have a Super Reverb which isn’t the same thing, but it is close enough for an interesting comparison. We will do a VCQ this Monday to discuss the reaction and comments. Should be fun. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/3zbo_ZGxvZc We demo and compare guitar amps using EL84 power tubes: Vox AC15 C1, 1961 Vox AC30, Victory VC35 The Copper and Matchless HC-30. We play clean, crank the amps to overdrive and also use a couple of key boost pedals. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. In this episode Dan and I fire up four amps that we like very much to see what we can learn. Dan’s beloved 1961 AC30 is his most treasured amplifier… but not the one he chooses to play as his main amp. That would be his Matchless HC-30 which – as amp fans will know– is chiefly inspired by those classic Vox amps of old. So how do they compare? But fear ye not those of thinner wallet. Clearly not everyone has multiple thousand pounds/dollars/euros to drop on these rarefied lungs of rock’n’roll, so we also include the much more attainable Vox AC15 C1 and Victory VC35 to see how they stand up. (And if you want to hear a digital simulation side by side with the AC30, watch next week’s show on the Strymon Iridium.) It’s a long video with plenty of tangents, even more variables and about as much scientific analysis as a three-year-old eating trifle, so anyone looking for stringent A/B comparisons and hard conclusions will be disappointed. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/m49jK-49BFA In this episode we discuss the concept of ‘Always-On’ pedals with some practical examples of how you might use them. Lots of people use a particular overdrive or preamp; perhaps a compressor or a slapback echo as their always-on pedal. We propose that they fall into four basic categories that may be functional, tonal or both. 1. Buffers; 2: Tone/EQ shaping; 3: Gain and dynamics; 4:A specific effect, eg reverb, delay etc.Clearly you can use any pedal as an always-on pedal, but here were are attempting to narrow the discussion a little bit in our area of all-round rock, blues and roots playing, and offer some useful ways to proceed if you’re new to this train of thought. No doubt there will be plenty of questions arising – Ladbrokes has great odds on a million questions about buffers again. We’ll address it in Monday’s VCQ. But if you’re confused just remeber three things: 1. Buffers give you noticeable high-end and presence back if your signal chain is suffering from capacitance-induced dullness. 2.… Make most vintage overdrives and fuzzes sound rubbish when placed before them. 3. If you use loads of true-bypass pedals chained together and no loop switcher, you might benefit from one… Try it before and after your overdrives. We prefer them after. And, 'What about EQ pedals? Surely they are a prime example of an always-on pedal?' Yes. We talk about EQ, but not necessarily in the context of a specific EQ pedal. Anyway, enjoy the show… Pedals & stuff in this episode… • TheGigRig Three2Onehttps://www.thegigrig.com/three2one • TC Electronic PolyTune 2 MiniUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2jKaukTUSA: http://bit.ly/2k2Gu4BAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vn6b6N • Benson Preamp (special edition orange)UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2YdumSeUSA: http://bit.ly/2WBF44vAustralia: http://bit.ly/2VVJu9l • Fender Level Set BufferUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VsxKeTUSA: http://bit.ly/2J1covvAustralia: • Taurus Servohttp://www.taurus-amp.pl/guitar/effects/white-line/servo.html • JHS CloverUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2JBB546USA: http://bit.ly/2E3D1PAAustralia: http://bit.ly/2W1srTu • Keeley D&M DriveUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2oTblU1USA: http://bit.ly/2rfACMdAustralia: http://bit.ly/2pUDUAE • Snouse Black Box OD2UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VCE9QL • Origin Effects Cali76 Stacked EditionUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2vMuSdGAustralia: http://bit.ly/2HbYgAr • Boss DM-2w Waza Craft DelayUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2hzsothAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vT8ulc • Catalinbread Topanga Spring ReverbUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2mj3leKAustralia: http://bit.ly/2qVOTyJ • TheGigRig G2https://www.thegigrig.com/g2 * Why do we have preferred retailer links? We're doing a new special segment, called "Tone Tips". These segments are a bit shorter in nature, and feature tips about getting better done, and demonstrating them. For years I had always wanted the ability to be able to show up to a gig with my Blackface amp (which I preferred with overdrive pedals), but I wanted a Vox-y chimey type of clean tone when necessary. I worked on different variations of circuits over the years, trying to achieve this. Finally, I hit upon it. That circuit became the Ace 30, which then became the 30 Something. Why the name change? Long story. Anyway, the 30 Something pedal really excels at being what Lotus Pedals coined "an Underdrive". Yes, it can get a bit gainy, but using it as a clean platform is where it shines. It also works very well when you stack other overdrives into it, getting a sound very similar to what it would be like if you ran that pedal into those British style chimey amps. So in this special episode of The Chasing Tone Podcast we bring you a demonstration of a Vox AC-30, AC-15, and a deluxe reverb with and without the 30 Something.
