Ben Luke talks to Anicka Yi about her influences—from the worlds of literature, music and, of course, art—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Yi creates installations and objects that sit on the borders of art and science. Drawing on research into biology, and particularly macrobiotics, but embedded in geopolitics, Yi's work calls for a deep sensory engagement from the viewer, with smell as important as sight. In fusing different categories of knowledge, she questions what she calls “the increasingly hazy taxonomic distinctions between what is human, animal, plant and machine”. She discusses being “possessed” by the formal language of Isamu Noguchi and inspired by the breadth of Rosemarie Trockel's work; she reflects on the impact of John Ashbery's poetry and how Donna Haraway prompted her series When Species Meet (2016). Plus, she gives insight into life in her studio (and how it compares to a laboratory) and answers our usual questions, including: what is art for?Anicka Yi, Gladstone Gallery, 24th Street, New York, 6 October-12 November Hosted on Acast. Taking cues from soft robotics and the natural world, conceptual artist Anicka Yi builds lighter-than-air machines that roam and react like autonomous life forms. Her floating "aerobes" inspire us to think about new ways of living with machines -- and to ponder how they could evolve into living creatures. "What if our machines could be more than just our tools, and instead, a new type of companion species?" she asks.

Two time Olympian for Canada, Anicka Newell, was gracious enough to hop on the pod in the middle of her European pole vaulting adventure. She gave us a look into her life as a professional pole vaulter, how she got so shredded, where her edgy look came from, what her struggles have been, and how she plans to improve on them. She was super nice and I can't thank her enough for taking the time to sit down and chat!
Artist Anicka Li expands the boundaries of art with work that explores biology, technology, and the merging of the two. Anicka connects with pioneering artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah whose latest film was described by critics as “the most haunting, wrenching new work of art I've seen so far this decade…”. In this episode, Diane Solway, Head of Arts and Culture Programs at CHANEL, moderates a conversation between both artists as they explore if we are more than human, how artists can contribute to important societal issues, the meaning behind John's film Five Murmurations, major disasters when preparing exhibitions, and what TV shows they binged watched during the pandemic.

In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I sat down with 2-time Olympic Pole Vaulter, Anicka Newell, as we chatted about different training regimens in her preparation for the Olympics. Anicka dissected the pole vault movement itself and the specific skill that goes into the jump. We also talked about the key nutrition, recovery and mental strategies in advancing towards peak athletic performance. Getting into the sport, Anicka Newell started pole vaulting at age 16. After graduating from Texas State University in 2016 with a major in Exercise Sports Science, she made her Olympic debut at Rio in the same year finishing second at the Canadian Championships. She set her personal best at 4.65m in June 2017 at a meet at her alumni stadium in San Marcos, Texas, making her the number two Canadian woman all-time. She repeated as the runner-up at the Canadian Championships before making the final in her debut at the World Athletics Championships. In early 2018, Newell finished seventh at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She went on to win her first national title. In January 2021, she set a new indoor personal best of 4.70m at a meet in Texas. Outdoors, she recorded a season-high 4.60m in May. In her second Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020, she advanced to the 15-woman finals. Anicka now works as a coach and personal trainer in Elite Sportz SA. Outside of her sport, she enjoys being near the water and wakeboarding. After Klara Maurovna and her two sons moved in with her sister Katerina, Katerina suggested they foster a child. Anicka was 13 years old and the sisters worked hard to get her the medical attention she needed, as well as give her a good home. But Klara noticed that sometimes, Anicka acted like an adult. What she'd discover later was that Anicka had ties to a cannibalistic cult and had a history of catfishing.

22. 7. 2020 jsme odvysílali poslední, 300. díl pořadu Snack. Byl to takový radiosilvestr plný obyčejných příhod s Jiřinou Vodrážkovou, Miroslavem Novotným a Milošem Lichnovským. Děkujeme všem, kteří jste nás 6 let poslouchali a měli náš pořad rádi!
We are the virus. Přišel k nám starožitník Michal Jankovský, který má antikvariát v Žatecké ulici a znát ho můžete i z pořadu Poklad z půdy.
Radiosvačina o pověrách, pořekadlech a rčeních.
Koho obdivujete?
Žádný vysílání z peřiny a spol.
A dopadlo to krásně.
Umite odpocivat v pokoji? Poslednich par tydnu k nacviku v domacich komnatach bylo vice nez dost prilezitosti. Anicce to jde lepe, Tomas bojuje. Treba vas tento dil radiosvaciny uklidni, a k tomu prihodime par disco lambad a teplych pisnicek. Proste SNACK mix z karanteny.
Artist Anicka Yi talks about our overall lack of knowledge about viruses, the vital role of art right now, the human relationship to nature and biology, and why she hopes Covid-19 may lead us all to “take a step back from our human-centric ways.”
Aničku zas uslyšíte z její kanceláře v kuchyni - nikdo nemá čas ztrácet čas, a tak si u příležitosti předtočení pořadu uvařila večeři. A nakousneme i zajímavé téma na příště.
Amidst a climate of uncertainty and social distancing due to COVID-19, writer and e-flux journal contributing editor Elvia Wilk and artist Anicka Yi discuss various changing global ecologies, viral and otherwise. Their original in-person conversation was planned on the occasion of Tate Modern’s selection of Yi for the annual Hyundai / Turbine Hall commission. A symbiotic organism in its own right, Anicka Yi's work fuses multi-sensory experience with synthetic and evolutionary biology to form lush bio-fictional landscapes. Utilizing a “biopolitics of the senses,” Yi challenges traditional approaches to the human sensorium, emphasizing olfaction as well as microbial and embodied intelligence. Through her research and “techno-sensual” artistic exploration, Yi is opening new discourse in the realms of cognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning, introducing concepts of the sensorial ecology of intelligence, the machine microbiome, machine ecosystems, and “biologized” machines. Maintaining a practice focused on co-subjectivity, Yi’s projects include collaborations with engineers, robots, synthetic and microbiologists, computer scientists, perfumers, ant and bacterial colonies, algae, tempura-fried flowers, and snails. Anicka Yi lives and works in New York City. Her recent solo exhibitions include Gladstone Gallery, Brussels; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Fridericianum, Kassel; Kunsthalle Basel; List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Kitchen, New York; and The Cleveland Museum of Art. Yi’s work was also featured in the 58th Venice Biennale, 2019. Yi has screened her film, The Flavor Genome, at the 2017 Whitney Biennial and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, 2017. In 2016, she was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize for outstanding achievement in contemporary art. She is represented by Gladstone Gallery and 47 Canal, New York. Yi's Hyundai Commission at Tate’s Turbine Hall is scheduled to open in October 2020. It will be curated by Mark Godfrey, senior curator; Petra Schmidt, production manager; and Carly Whitefield, assistant curator.
