Boston: Day Trips In And Around

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2020 39:42

Boston Road Trips And New England Day Trips Joan and Martin McEntee of Trailblazertours.com join me on the podcast and YouTube channel to plot out four amazing routes to road trip this summer and fall. A point of comedy is that they are clearly from the UK and recording from Boston. I am clearly American and recording from England. It's a bit of a country swap and a pleasant surprise! In normal times Joan and Martin would be divine small group tours both on foot and via luxury vehicles. Now, in the unusual time we are in, they have offered their resources to listeners of Travel Radio Podcast. They would love to hear from you and give you tips for your Boston travel itinerary. BOSTON PROPER SIGHTS: We start with a quintessential Boston tour starting on Acorn street and Beacon Hill. Granary Burial Ground on the Freedom trail offers 16 stops with points featuring the traditional cast of characters from America's founding. Moving to Back Bay and Copley Square this spot offers a great time reflect on the changes of Boston over time. The building in Boston are nearly four centuries old and often surprises Europeans. They simply don't expect to find so many old buildings in Boston. Next at the the Paul Revere house (1860 museum) you can see the origin point of Paul's famous Boston ride with the lanterns. Then in then North End you will have to choose between the best of Boston's Italian Pastry shops. A debate rages... Who has the best cannoli? We are a Mike's Pastry family but I wouldn't say no to a Modern cannoli if you put it in front of me! Instagram shots must be taken on the North End tour with a photo in front of the Paul Revere statue and the Old North Church where Paul Revere hung his lanterns at the start of the American Revolution. Faneuil & Quincy Hall are great places to find yourself at lunchtime. There are choices from everyone including seafood and Boston CLAM CHOWDER! Designed as a meeting and market place Faneuil Hall still operates in that capacity. It is a tourist center and hub with shops on the ground floor and National Park on the top floor. This is a quick stop but worth seeing. This is also a place to watch street dancers and other performers. Boston Harbor is the place to go for beautiful views. Take the Boston Harbor Walk for miles of trails hugging the harbor along the sea looking into the city. There are lots of places to stop for coffee and drinks along the way. At the top of the walk there is the Boston Tea Party exhibit on a docked boat. Learn about how sailors lived on board. Guests can even throw tea into the Boston Harbor. Have your own Boston Teas Party! Additionally, there is an excellent children's museum next door (Boston Children’s Museum). It is not a historic destination but it will burn calories and keep the children happy! Day Trip #1: Leave Boston and drive North! This route goes north of Boston via the highway until Manchester By The Sea and then if goes scenic! Enjoy this route through tiny fishing villages and find yourself in Gloucester Harbor. A board walk will lead you to the Fisherman Statue memorializing all the fisherman of Gloucester lost at sea. Take Atlantic Ave, a coastal back road offering a sea views and even twin lighthouses to Rockport. Once in Rockport you can see a a famous scene from Finding Nemo (think Dentist office). There is also a road named Bearskin Rock. It is a fine min stroll full or art, antique, coffee shops, and outdoor dining! Point back to Boston and stop in Salem. Choose from three different museums telling the stories of the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem With Museum feature mannequins and audio effects. They are dated but creepy! Everything is walkable from Salem Harbor to include the House of the Seven Gables. This is Nathanial Hawthorn’s birthplace and visitor center. Take back roads to Marblehead and Castle Rock. Choose to take the Revere Beach Parkway for a last coastal route back to the city. There is also a ferry from Boston to Salem and Salem city center is a short walk from the port. Day Trip 2: Head South of Boston to Plymouth! In Quincy, John Adams had three presidential houses. This includes an unofficial Presidential Library holding 10,000 books belonging to the family built by John Quincy Adams’s son Charles. The rangers on location also offer excellent insight. Have you heard of the Army of Two, the Bates Sisters? If you go to the Scituate Harbor and Lighthouse you will see where two young girls fooled the British Army into think the militia was approaching. One drum and one whistle is all you need! You will also drive past the ORIGINAL Dunkin Donuts! Duxbury is a great stop with one of the oldest wooden bridges in the country. There is a great place for lobster rolls and another for pastries. In Plymouth, the Mayflower II is usually on display. But due to Covid-19 it is postponed. It is an exact replica of the original. It will boggle your mind that they were able to fit so many people on this ship in the original sailing. Plymouth Plantation is a replica village. The actors do an amazing job. At 3pm your kids can enlist into army! Plymouth Rock is much smaller in person that you think. But it is worth seeing. There are several statues worth seeing in the area including a memorial to the Forefather. This is the largest granite statue in the US. If you are a descendent of the Mayflower settlers you can go to the Mayflower museum and have your lineage traced. In Lexington you will find the Minute Man Statue. It is the origin of Paul Revere’s ride and the starting location of the American Revolutionary War. Five mins walk away is a home that John Hancock lived in. The Alcott House is also in Lexington. You can see the house where Little Women was written. From here you can walk to Concord and visit the Paul Revere capture sight. Concord is a scene out of a Norman Rockwell painting! The Main Street Cafe is a great place for a bite to eat. Make sure to check out the cheese shop and find out when the big wheel of cheese is arriving from Italy. You won’t want to miss it! Lastly. We head back towards Boston and stop at Walden Pond. Walden Pond is notably famous for Henry Walden Thorough’s 2.5 year residence. He built a cabin and spent his days there writing his book. This is the place to go for autumn/fall! BOSTON VIRTUAL TOURS: You can visually walk through Boston with Martin. Check trailblazertours.com for their Boston Virtual Tours schedule. Guests are welcome to ask questions while Martin is on sight in Boston. Tours are mostly on the weekends. Special Guest: Martin and Joan McEntee.

Note from Megan Chapa: Today is the first of an exciting series of guest hosted episodes you will get to experience. My past guests have volunteered to create content for me so that I can make a transatlantic move this late summer/early fall. Content will focus on many drivable destinations in the US. I hope you will enjoy this series as my guests truly know travel well. They have all also made themselves available to you for questions or assistance planning your own trips. Feel free to tell them how well they did. https://assets.fireside.fm/file/fireside-images/podcasts/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/hosts/d/d4365d1d-3082-48ef-a6c0-86593675d0f9/avatar_small.jpg Redmon Wines, St. Helena: Road Trip Gems of Napa Valley, California https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_aac89d07197f4ef49687921649e708cb~mv2.gif Today’s episode features Trave Radio’s first guest host Matthew Wahlgren. Matt is a regular guest of Travel Radio Podcast but has taken over the show as host this week! He is taking us to one of his favorite California road trip destinations and I love it. Napa Valley is just the place to escape lockdown this summer. Escape with us this week (at least your ears can) to boutique vineyards in St. Helena and delightful dining locations. This is Napa Valley. Napa Valley is opening up to tourists and businesses are excited to have visitors return! If Italy was on your radar for summer 2020 and you had to cancel your trip Napa Valley is an excellent alternative. Lisa Redmon, is a 50 year local to the Napa Valley and a producer of Napa Valley wine for the past 15 years. The Redmon family is always pouring something! Originally, it was just pouring rootbeer at the family’s A & W Rootbeer restaurant in St. Helena, Napa. Then, the A & W's were incredibly successful and this allowed the Redmons to purchase other real estate in St. Helena to include a vineyard. Self taught and perfected, Lisa now pours her own award winning Napa Valley wines. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_6e765aa82b3348e989e6c687b0dd4cdb~mv2_d_1512_2016_s_2.jpg/v1/fill/w_998,h_1340,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/cf7b00_6e765aa82b3348e989e6c687b0dd4cdb~mv2_d_1512_2016_s_2.jpg Starting with a home wine making kit Lisa used her family’s grapes to create her first wine. Taking her creation to the Napa Valley Fair her wines won Best of Show and Best Cabernet. With this confirmation, that combining Redmon Family grapes and her creativity makes for excellent wine, Lisa set out to create the Redmon Wines brand. Lisa produced the first vintage of Redmon Wine’s in 2001. Production has grown from 25 cases per year to now over 1500 cases per year. Redmon Wines are made from 5 different varietals grown on 50 year old vines. The trick to getting your hands on some of this Napa Valley liquid gold is to visit the vineyard on Redmon Ranch. At the vineyard you will join Lisa in the little farmhouse for a tasting and history of the estate vines. Afterward you will have the opportunity to purchase some of this much coveted and hard to get wine! https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_41fe6cbc7e6843ecbf36402ff3ca383b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_931,h_1280,al_c,q_90/cf7b00_41fe6cbc7e6843ecbf36402ff3ca383b~mv2.jpg Lisa Redmon also spills the beans (let’s say grapes…) on her favorite local shops and places to dine in St. Helena. This includes a Napa Valley Olive Oil Company housed in an old barn that mirrors the family’s original property in Italy. You know you are at the right place when you see the American Flag and the Italian Flag flying from the barn's side windows. The inside walls are papered with business cards from the day the business opened. The food goods available are a hobbit’s dream. Locally made olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salami, cheeses and other picnic items. It is a delightful trip back in time and perfectly pairs with wine tasting experiences. Foodies will love a trip to Napa Valley. Eat like a local with these tips from Lisa Redmon including recommendation not listed on the menu! ~ Firstly a little bakery in St. Helena will start your morning right and they are famos for their English muffins. ~ The Cliff Family Winery, Main Street St. Helena, hosts a gourmet Italian- style flat bed food truck. Guests can take their flat bread outback and enjoy a wine tasting or purchase wine by the glass. ~ Gottt’s Roadside is a gourmet drive in and offers an excellent menu like fish tacos, burgers, brussel sprouts and street corn. Kids will enjoy their milkshakes! (Tip call your order in if the line is overwhelming.). The back also has an enclosed area with picnic tables that is perfect for kids to run around in. ~ An upscale option right outside St. Helen is Brasswood, in the old outlet section. A secret item menu is the pulled mozzarella. The cocktails are delicious and creative! There are lots of shops and bakeries around to enjoy. ~ Lisa’s favorite view is the Auberge du Soleil. One side of the deck is their Michelin Rated Restraint 13 times in a row. The other side of the deck is a bar menu and cocktail bar. Make sure to make a reservation! ~ Goose and Gander is up and coming and will have a creative menu with a great chef and amazing bar! The upstairs is a nice patio are complete with a Koi Pond for a fantastic dining experience. The lower portion is a an English Pub style dining area with a fire place and big leather chair. They serve and excellent Duck Fries. Cocktails are beautiful with edible flower and cucumbers on the side of the glasses. Plus, they are delicious! https://shop.redmonwines.com/assets/images/products/originals/Appellation%20Collection1%2Ejpg For transportation hire a local! Knowing the area can make or break your trip. There are several options to include driver that own their own cars or drivers that can be hired by the hour to drive your car. Either way, don’t drive drunk, do arrive at your appointments on time. Hire a driver that knows the back roads and can make additional recommendations as needed. Accommodations in Napa Valley will vary from large luxury resorts to cottage style bed and breakfasts. Downtown Napa and St. Helena offer additional hotel options which are great for walking into town for night time dining or activities. Bashfully, and I set him up for this, Matt asks Lisa about wine stomping. Wine stomping is a real thing! It happens during harvest time. The main winery where wine stomping can be found is Girgich Hill. Guests can stomp out a half or whole barrel. (Megan interjecting here… I’ve done this in a different location, this is fun and a fantastic work out…) The most popular time of year to visit Napa Valley is during the grape harvest. This is also when the crowds come; typically in the months of September to October. Napa Guests will see the wine being produced and even trucks driving through the valley with grapes in the back. Lisa’s trick is to visiting Napa Valley is to come in the last week of October. The fall colors are still on the vines but the tourist traffic has slowed down dramatically. The Spring is a gorgeous time where the entire valley is lovely light green. February is “mustard season” when the vines are all golden. Napa Valley in the winter is less visually stimulating when the vines are dormant. HOWEVER, Napa Valley tourists are all dormant and you will receive fantastic attention from the wine makers you visit! Are you interested in planning a trip through Napa Valley but don’t have time? Matthew Wahlgren has several itineraries he plans for his guests to St. Helena and other regional destinations. In addition to Napa Valley itineraries Matt plans fully customized vacations. Matt’s contact information can be found here (https://www.travelradioonline.com/hosts/mattw). Lisa Redmon’s bio and contact information can be found here. (https://www.travelradioonline.com/guests/lisaredmon) Note from Megan: Thank you Matt and Lisa for taking the time to share your insight on Napa Valley, CA and St. Helena, CA with us. Matt, you did a fantastic job hosting and I look forward to you hosting more episodes. I hope we get to speak again soon! Lisa, I hope to toast with you soon on your lovely vineyard in St. Helena, tasting your amazing wines! Blessings to both of you! We also know that looking at the Sandals All-inclusive website can be overwhelming. What the casual viewer may not be able to tell is that Sandals Resorts were each built with a vacation style in mind. BUT, how can a person tell the difference between these Sandals Resorts? https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/pO9TB5F-.jpg The simple answer is to ask someone who has been there herself! Valerie has been to every single Sandals Resort and more than once. That's 16 all-inclusive resorts in the Sandals family. She has also visited all of the Beaches Resorts. Beaches are the family oriented resorts in the Sandals family of properties. Is Valerie a Sandals/Beaches Resort junkie? Should we stage an intervention? Yes she is! There will be no intervention! Let’s join her! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/mVHtMNXS.jpg When Valerie suggested the topic of, "How to choose between the Sandals Resorts." or "Find the the right Sandals All-Inclusive Resort for you." I immediately agreed. I love talking about these resorts. They are perfectly built for two people in love. All activities, dining tables, nooks, crannies and hammocks are designed to perfectly fit couples. I recommend them for honeymooners and anniversary resort vacation seekers regularly. The reason is because that each Sandals resort property is though out so well. You simply get on the airplane, picked up by Sandals staff and you are on vacation! Everything else is covered (with rare exception). Many of my own friends, family and clients go to a Sandals or Beaches resort every year or every other year. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/68QdLz3-.jpg On today's episode we are hoping to get through two questions: How do couples choose a Sandals all-inclusive resort? There are too many options! Are all Sandals All-Inclusive Resorts the same? I think that we do a pretty good job talking through several brackets of Sandals Resorts properties. Valerie and I think that the Sandals Resorts can be broken into the categories of: Active traveler resorts with golf and scuba, Entertainment Intense, Relaxed/Spa, and the romantic resorts. We specifically name resorts in each category and go over why we think so. You will be able to tell we love Sandals Resorts! Lastly, Valerie is hosting a virtual Sandals Resorts tour event on July 2nd 7:30PM EST. Couples can interact and tour Sandals Resorts real time with Sandals resort staff on location. Couples wanting to participate should preregister by emailing Valerie directly. By preregistering you become eligible for the session bonus offered by Sandals Resorts as a thank you for attending. In the past this bonus has been $250 spa credits, excursion credits and more! Sandals All-Inclusive Resorts Topics Covered: ~ Island hopping between Sandals Resorts, Barbados to Grenada ~ Resort hopping specifically at Sandals Barbados and Royal Barbados ~ Destination Weddings: Getting married at a Beaches Resort Property then moving to a Sandals Resorts ~ Sandals romance resorts starting in St. Lucia at Regency LaToc. Stay at one Sandals and play at all three, LaToc, Grande St. Lucian ~ Sandals Barbados properties for active travelers, bowling and roof top pools. ~ Sandals Grenada property is more of a low key. This resort features amazing suites and swim up rooms. It is a very chill vibe but it very hilly. You will get a glutei work out! ~ Sandals Ochi, also very hilly and if you have a butler they will shuttle you around in a golf cart! This resort features a speak easy, the password changes daily. You must hear Big Mama sing. This is a great resort for entertainment! ~ Some low key resorts, Starting in St. Lucia with Sandals Halcyon. This is one of Valerie’s favorite resorts for relaxing. It features the largest pool in the Caribbean. Kelly’s dockside is their featured restaurant and sits over the water. ~ Resorts in Jamaica: There are many Sandals Resorts in Jamaica. Starting with Sandals South Coast for a more low key property. Featuring over the water bungalows and a nice amount of entertainment including pickle ball courts. Room categories are broken into themed neighborhoods. ~Sandals Royal Plantation in Ochos Rios, is low key, all suites and all butler rooms. It is low key but offers resort exchanges with Sandals Ochi for lively entertainment. By request only is the private villas available at Royal Planation. These are on request only and are great for three couples. ~Sandals Royal Caribbean is in Montego Bay and is a more low key resort. It features over the water suites. ~Sandals Negril, is in close proximity to Beaches Negril and is a great option for destination weddings. Couples ~ Sandals Montego Bay is Valerie’s favorite resort. This blows my mind because it is directly under the flight path. But loads of people love it and take the opportunity to participate in a tradition of giving a romantic kiss to they partner when each plane comes over. ~Sandals Golf properties: Royal Plantation, Sandals Ochi or Beaches Ochi all include some amount of golfing from free rounds to unlimited. In the Bahamas, Exuma Emerald Bay, has a Greg Norman Golf course. It is a little remote but it an excellent choice for golfers. They offer tournaments as well. Wine Tourism in Oporto and Northern Portugal Confession Time: There is always Portuguese wine on our table with dinner! It is also sometimes in our glasses other times of the day too! Portuguese wines are one of the greatest discoveries my husband and I learned about living in the UK. Recording this episode was no chore for me as we are already eyeing this destination for ourselves. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/IcIqyjWI.jpeg Why aren’t Portuguese wines packing the shelves of US wine and liquor stores? My guest Miguel Lael, talks about the culture of blending in Portugal. US drinkers want to know what grape is in the bottle. However, blending is the tradition of Portuguese wines. Miguel says sometimes the growers aren’t even sure what they are growing. We decide that a bottle of wine form Portugal is a grape party inside the bottle! https://www.ml-privatetours.com/templates/yootheme/cache/douro-valley-353a546e.jpeg As Independence Day approaches in the US I reflect on the US and Portugal’s shared tradition of Madeira wine. Miguel shares some history on the accidental discovery of Madeira and how to pair it. However, this ends in him just laughing and exclaiming that, “The only really rule to drinking Portuguese wines is that there are no rules.” You drink them how you decide you like them! Why not watch the video interview? It’s hard to say if Miguel Lael or his guests have more fun during one of his tours. You will get this sense immediately from our conversation this week on Travel Radio Podcast. Private and limited to 7 people you will enjoy a fully customized wine and olive oil experience.

In order to give prospective clients an idea of what it’s like to hire Miguel we play a game of, “Let’s Plan It”. I pick up my pretend phone and call him up on his 24/7 direct line. In the end I confirm, touring the Douro Valley is a dream trip I want to take. Hiring a jovial and likable guide is critical to making the experience take root in your heart. Miguel would be my choice. If you enjoyed this audio episode, why not watch the video too? We will explore Miguel’s own photographs of the region he lives, and loves to work in.

Thank you for as always for sharing in this audio adventure with us! Shortly before the start of WWII Matty's grandparents fled Poland to the safety of America. His grandmother then joined the US Army, returning to Poland to fight on the side of the Allies. Matty also experiences travel the same way. He describes some of his favorite dishes and one to avoid. I inquire about perogies and Matty assures me they are everywhere and filled with everything amazing! As you may have guessed from the intro - the Vodka is top notch! Enjoy this episode of Travel Radio Podcast on Krakow, Poland. I was not able to make my trip to Poland due to travel restrictions. This episode really helped me dream the dream of traveling to Poland when the time is right. Thank you Matty K for allowing me to interview you on Krakow, Poland. I hope that we get to explore more of Poland together on the podcast shortly! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/kPwycPWm.jpg (https://mailchi.mp/b1947059ef35/d4r0ehjtt3) Show Format (loosely covered): Welcome Introductions Megan: Where are we going today? Matty: Krakow, Poland Megan: How many times have you been to Poland? Matty: Megan: Why do you suggest Poland to your clients? Matty: (I’m thinking value, rich culture, etc) Megan: A lot of travelers, and travel agents, don’t like to visit the same destination twice. You’ve gone three times. Can you share a story about how Poland made its way into your heart and a destination you go back to again and again? Matty: Megan: Is there something funny/surprising for you when you first visited Krakow? Matty: Megan: Did you experience anything in Krakow that made you feel small or really spark awe inside you? Matty: Megan: As with most European countries, developed for thousands of years, we can’t get to all of Poland today. We’ve decided to start in Krakow and use this as a base for exploring the region. This is Megan having a moment of out-loud truth. Colombia was never on my radar. My impressions were based on damning news cycles and comedy bits from popular sit comes like Modern Family. I thought Colombia = danger. https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1560957123-1f12158888ed?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=eyJhcHBfaWQiOjEyMDd9&auto=format&fit=crop&w=500&q=80 Photo by Jorge Gardner on Unsplash @gardnerjorge However, that is one of the reasons I wanted to have Joni Wu on the program. I saw that she was on a trip there and immediately asked if she would like to be on the podcast. Joni has impeccable and discriminating taste. She usually travels to new destinations to research new options for her luxury seeking clients. With this in mind my impressions started to change. https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1534943441045-1009d7cb0bb9?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=eyJhcHBfaWQiOjEyMDd9&auto=format&fit=crop&w=500q=80 Photo credit Ricardo Gomez Angel @ripato on Unsplash Right away, we talk safety and the locals deep regrets that "danger" is the impression tourists might have about their country. After interviewing Joni I have to admit a great curiosity about Colombia and putting it on my list. Post Covid-19 travel restrictions being lifted I want to go to Colombia. After we move back to the United States it will be in easy striking distance! In the show notes you will find the Colombia Board of tourism's website. It is a great resource and will give you a great idea of different climates, geography, national events and THE FOOD or Colombia. They also have great videos to wet your travel appetite. Forth coming will be Joni's show notes for the topics discussed on this episodes. Notes Prepared By Joni Wu: M: If people want to find you online where can they find you? ASTA: https://www.travelsense.org/advisors/joni-wu/ LUXE: https://www.luxetm.com/travel-experts/z4ujr3fj4w257eqy5y2uvt24y04xz2 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonigwu/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/joni.wu My blog www.tofeelalive.com M: Where are we going today? J: Colombia! It was the last trip I went on before everything shut down. I got back March 4th and was self-quarantining the week after. M: Why? J: It’s one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. One list had it ranked #2 with only Brazil above it and Indonesia with all of its many islands at #3. Easy to get to with direct flights from a number of major US hubs. M: Let’s get some basics covered quickly. What language skills does a person need in order to navigate in Colombia? J: Spanish speaking country so it’s similar to traveling in most non-English speaking countries but most working in tourism speak English. M: How about currency and money? Do travelers need cash or cards? J: Cards are widely accepted but you’ll want to have cash on hand for things like souvenirs and snacks from small vendors and generally any smaller purchases. Currency is Colombian peso which is different than Mexican peso. Some vendors will accept US dollars but you might get a lower exchange rate and if you only have larger bills, you’ll receive the difference in Col pesos or they may not accept it. M: Are there safety concerns? J: People always ask that due to all the media around drug trade and understandably so. But the country has done a great job of cleaning that up and making it very safe to travel. Of course there’s your standard crime that’s prevalent in all big cities and tourist destinations so you’ll want to be aware of your surroundings but nothing crazy. There are some remote areas where the drug cartels still have operations but those aren’t any places a tourist would make their way to and as advisors, we rely on local tour operators who are very familiar with where to avoid. M: You specialize in luxury travel? I was surprise to see you in Colombia. IS this a destination for the luxury traveler? J: Yes! Although it is popular with backpackers and budget travelers due to the value we talked about, there are so many great offerings for the luxury traveler! And everyone loves a good value! In popular tourist spots, you have luxury hotels and dining as we mentioned. For those wanting to get out of the tourist destinations, there are small luxury lodges and private villas. Also private drivers/guides/naturalists, activities like diving in the Caribbean and exclusively curated experiences for any interest like an avid bird watcher as Colombia has the most species of birds in the world. M: The exchange rate is pretty favorable for US travelers. Can you talk about the value travelers will experience choosing Colombia? J: In addition to exchange rate, everything is quite inexpensive compared to US standards. They earn much lower wages so things are priced accordingly. And since they receive tourists from all over, including other South and Central American countries, they don’t price gauge towards high wage Westerners as much as some destinations do. For example, you can stay at 5-star International brand city center hotel in Bogota for $300 a night whereas similar accommodations would easily double that in another capital city like Mexico City for example. And you can have a Michelin quality dining experience with wine for under $30 p/p M: Let’s start in Bogota. What can people expect from this city? J: It’s the capital city so there’s the usual – a big square with old buildings, a downtown, great dining, nightlife, museums, shopping. The Gold Museum is a big attraction and it had a lot of artifacts but I’m not a museum person. National museums are free in Colombia! There’s also a big public market which is something I love to do when I travel. It’s also known for graffiti street art with murals all over the city and you can do a self-led walking tour or go on a guided one. We had the opportunity to learn how to do graffiti art with a local artist which. Some of us did better than others, mine was hideous but it was a cool experience. One of the best experiences was playing Tejo. They joke that it’s their national sport since they don’t really have one. But it’s basically a game where you throw these metal pucks at a mud clay board and try to get it stuck. If you hit one of the explosive triangles, it makes a loud noise and everyone screams and loses their mind. It’s kind of like horseshoes or cornhole but way more fun and everyone drinks beer while they play. What I wasn’t expecting was how cold it would be! I thought Colombia was tropical weather all over but Bogota is actually a plateau in the Andes at 8600ft elevation which means it’s chilly year round, average around 60s. M: Let’s move to Cartagena on the coast. Is this a traditional port town or more of a resort and sun bathing spot? J: It’s totally a colonial port town. The Old Town is walled and definitely the place to stay if you’re only staying a short time since everything is walkable. You only need a day or two to explore Cartagena but I could stay there for weeks just hanging out. There’s nightlife, dining, and what makes it special is that traveler’s vibe driven in part by tourism and a digital nomad community since cost of living is low but has a lot to offer. It kind of reminds me of a Bali before it became as mainstream. There’s a misconception that it’s a beach town. It’s on the Caribbean coast, the weather is hot and humid, and there is a beach but it’s not great to look at. For a nice beach, there are and day trips out to Baru, accessible by land and boat, and nearby Rosario islands which are so stunning. For beach/view lovers with the budget, I’d recommend staying a couple of nights at Las Islas in Baru which is part of Leading Hotels and it’s amazing. All the rooms are individual bungalows, either as a treetop or seafront. You can even swim to breakfast (which is included in the rates). And they have a private island in the Rosario islands that you can take a 5 minute boat ride over to and spend the day relaxing there. Anything I say won’t do it justice so I’ll make a Instagram post on it with photos so you guys can see what I mean. M: Now tell me about this “Gringo trail”..? J: It’s like the popular path that Westerners stay within and includes Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin, and the coffee region near Salento. Colombian coffee is some of the most prized in the world so they’ve done a good job promoting tourism to visit the coffee farms, do tastings, see small towns, and explore nature. On the Caribbean side, other places like Santa Marta, the island of San Andres, Barranquilla (famous in Colombia for their Carnival celebration), and Tayrona National Park are included in the “Gringo Trail” but much less known to American travelers. M: Can we talk about some of the less traveled places in Colombia? These type of places will be high on peoples to-do lists… if they can get there. Let’s start with Tayrona Nation Park J: I’m dying to go to Tayrona. If I had known about it prior, I would’ve extended my trip make it there. It has beautiful Caribbean waters on one side, and tropical mountain on the other. That landscape is a dream. Google image it and you’ll know what I mean. Also on the Caribbean side for the adventurous, there’s a 30-mile trek to the Lost City that starts with a 2-hour car ride from the beach resort town of Santa Marta. Then you trek for several days to get to the Lost City which are ruins older than Machu Picchu. I hear that trek is just magical and walking is the only way to get to the ruins. But it’s not for the faint of heart as you are in a jungle and there are only very basic camping/bunk lodging along the route. Like the Inca Trail, you have to go with a licensed guide. G Adventures offers it. M: Are there other places to visit outside of the Gringo Trail? J: There are so many places to go! Colombia is one of the most biodiverse places. There are many remote places welcoming tourists – you can visit the Amazon! I don’t think the infrastructure is quite ready for luxury clients to the Amazon but there other remote options with luxury accommodations. As travel advisors, we use local tour operators that know where to go and can curate experiences to client’s preferences. M: Let’s go glamping! Tell us where we can clamp among some spectacular flora and fauna J: I learned about this place called El Nido Condor Ecolodge in the Andes and it looks incredible. You’re in luxury glamping huts on the edge of a cliff and the condors nest is right under you so you see them flying out from your room. I’m not even into bird watching but it’s a bird watchers paradise. There’s also hiking and biking tours, star gazing, and night treks. There’s also a luxury glamping called Corocora owned by Galavanta, a luxury DMC part of Virtuoso. It’s like a safari with wildlife drives, canoeing, Colombia cowboy experiences. All are eco-friendly. M: Lastly, because I know you are adventurous - did you eat anything super adventurous on your trip? J: Most of the cuisine I’ve had before but prepared in local ways which were new to me like amazing arepas and Caribbean inspired flavors. We did an exotic fruit tasting which was really cool because I did get to try a lot of fruit that I never had before, many of which come from the Amazon. Special Guest: Joni Wu.

#traveldreaming Travel Industry Mix Tape and other destination jams...

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2020 9:08

Mix Tape For The Travel Industry ...and other destination based jams. Good hedgerows make for good neighbors... or so the expression goes. I would argue that it should be, "Good hedgerows make good neighbors but music has no bounds." This is what I found out a few weeks ago working in my Oxford in the garden. Suddenly, I heard my name. I turned around and there was my neighbor Charlie poking his head over the garden fence. Perched in the most precarious position, wobbling with large gadren shears in hands, while balanced on his kid's trampoline... He asked who created the music playlist. Radiohead had come on and he pleasantly sang along while he too worked on his plot. Charlie remarked that several band members live in Oxford. (It's true I checked.) https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/8ZOPCMlW.png The conversation turned to mix tapes, the aural love letters of the 90's. We reminisced over the process of making them, receiving them and most importantly choosing the right songs. Then it sparked an idea inside me. The travel industry, a workplace that has been kind to me, my guests that have supported me and listeners stuck at home need a love letter. At the onset of the outbreak travel professionals spent literally hundreds of hours cancelling, rescheduling and requesting refunds for their clients. They used their networks and industry muscles on behalf of their clients. (Never used a travel agent? This here is a pretty strong argument for not waiting on hold yourself.) Did you know that travel agents only get paid once your travel is complete? This is the same with tour operators and hoteliers. That means they worked once to plan the trip and again to undo everything and received no or little compensation. This is like double barrel black eyes. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/szKRpwaB.png (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7cLnZ9GBt4cfTTegCXA7jB?si=9QOZN56WR0eC7yTzy1C6ZQ) On top of that anyone in the travel industry is having their inbox flooded with training offers, promotional offers and the saddest, updates on our colleagues truly suffering around the world. The tourism money is gone and everyone in the industry is feeling it. Some have thrown in the towel and are abandoning tourism all together. (Hug these people when this whole thing lifts.) Thankfully, in my observation, most are sticking with the industry. We love the people we work with. We love helping tourists connect to new people and places around the world. We believe when we've figured out the right boundaries travel will be back in a large way. Until then., we are all processing, grieving, gaining strength back and starting to hope and explore this new landscape. It's hard and emotional. *With that in mind I made you a mix tape. It is available on Spotify through these links. Or, just search for the hash tag #traveldreaming. * ... OK, I MADE THREE PLAYLISTS.... ( search #traveldreaming on Spotify) The first is like the emotional journey of the travel industry in songs. It ends with HOPE! You will know you are there because you will hear me talking on the first track. This will not make sense for sharing with your clients. None of the songs are actually about travel. Remember this is my mix tape/ love letter to you! Feel free to share with our industry friends! Feel free to share these with your clients to keep them travel dreaming. This is for the road trippers! These are all songs about USA destinations and places I hope to drive to on our roadtrips next year. I know I missed some so if you have some to share please contact me! The third is destinations all around the world. I had a harder time finding these and would love imput! Please enjoy and I would love to include your recommendations. I hope these ladies are two new resources for you. All resources mentioned are below in the show notes! This episode is also for the rest of us who don't travel or live with autistic persons. We too will engage with them and need a little insight on how to be supportive. My hopes are that these conversations can give us a glimpse into a caregiver's experience. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/0e4cf0_312343967985428fbf3afb655ad6d98a~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_236,h_230,al_c,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/182a1a_edited.png Today we ask the question, "Where can I travel with my autistic child?". Spoiler alert - IT'S EVERYWHERE! Dina Farmer, Certified Autism Travel Professional (CATP), is positive you can fullfill your family's travel dreams and bring your autistic child with you. She travels frequently with her own autistic child. Enabling him to travel and thrive in new environments motivated her to get her CATP certification. The autism community is underserved and Dina is committed to guiding families in the travel planning process. In addition to working with these families Dina offers travel planning to families with other medical needs such as diabetes. She really offers some great tips and resources to keep things smooth, uneventful and enjoyable for these types of travelers. More and more the travel industry is making step to be inclusive and Dee is keeping tabs! http://static1.squarespace.com/static/57c0394d29687fe4f8e30a9f/t/5e831f3c8cfb0e4f12eb5266/1586880636358/?format=230w I asked Dee Nix, Autism Champions, to help guide me in a conversation about encountering public autism meltdowns and how we should react. Should I look away? Engage? Smile? Our conversation was candid and really helped me personally build a mental checklist of how I might offer support to a family in need. We also discussed airports with designated low stimulations zones and airline employee trainings. Dee offers some suggestions on how airlines might train employees better in the future. A recurring theme between both interviews is that, "What works in your home, will work while traveling..." Take your fiddle toys and ear muffs. We get it and support it. It was here that Coco Chanel invented the concept of the modern boutique! Today you will sip on champagne as you browse the store and walk up the famous mirrored stairway. Before leaving we will visit her apartment. Although she didn’t actually live here, this is where she received all of her important guests. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581684779541-BX8ZJJSSM6PLIAVLGT4I/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kBiFFF0426eZA9Lf1nHvmwNZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PIhr1X1Cgf9-UrAGTDTCptf9p1UDZdv1iI1xufGEBNC3cKMshLAGzx4R3EDFOm1kBS/Galleries+Lafayette.jpg?format=1500w After lunch we will go to Galeries Lafayette (in 1893 this store was 70 sq mt and today is 70,000 sq mt of absolute luxury and splendor. ) Immediately after we will cross the street and head over to Printemps, originally opened in 1865. We will start by heading to the rooftop for a cool glass of champagne with a 360° view of Paris! We can then continue our shopping in this equally beautiful Haussmann store which is said to have the largest beauty department in the world! For those not interested in shopping you will be able to chose between different activities such as cooking lesson and wine tasting or Graffiti Workshop that ends with creating your own masterpiece on a designated wall in the city. “The shopping, the food, the views! Paris is a city that entrances us all—and I’m no exception.” Michael Kors Day 3: Artists, Sacred Sites and Cabaret Montmartre is a truly special neighbourhood and you are going to fully experience it today. From The Wall of Love, we will walk past the Bateau Lavoir in the footsteps of Picasso and see his first studio in Paris. Strolling through Place du Tertre, with all it’s artists set up around the square painting caricatures and portraits. We will stop at the oldest building in Montmartre which was also home to Renoir and where he painted some of his masterpieces such as Bal du Moulin de la Galette and The Swing. The Renoir Gardens offer breathtaking views of the vineyard, the Clos Montmartre, and northern cityscape of Paris. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581684092956-UHOBDFQ35E09OUTZSAF3/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kJK4Mm1kch8SFO9ZNkN1NT97gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z5QHyNOqBUUEtDDsRWrJLTmN9YSRtfoTLg6dUq-6F17A0FFZK5fArcnK1IqGweyunyWChwIwkIJ_P7MaZif-uMs/Montmartre.png?format=1000w We will then visit Sacré Coeur and feel the magic that surrounds this incredible church. We will enjoy everything this neighbourhood has to offer from the incredible cheese shops, fish vendors and even walk past Moulin Rouge before dinner and then we will end our day at Paris’ oldest Cabaret and one that is still enjoyed by locals. This is not just a show that you will enjoy viewing but one which will also have you singing and dancing along with everyone else. “Paris is always a good idea.” – Audrey Hepburn Day 4: Pantheon to Passion Relics ( Including Notre Dame) We will meet at the Panthéon. After visiting this historical monument, we will enjoy lunch in the Quartier Latin. Weather permitting we will picnic in Jardin Luxembourg with fresh cheeses, local treats from the area and of course a fine wine or a local craft lemonade. In the gardens you will find mini sailboat races in one of the fountains, the Statue of Liberty as well as a few Rodin sculptures. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1570706998148-6IJWXBQKEL0KDA7F5F0B/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFQQgP34qnCpeHaeAOzTt7pZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PIedjZT6_OBzi2ofH1EqNdNeCRxNMlbxs9807lIebBlcA/Notre+Dame.png?format=750w From here we will stroll through some of the oldest and most incredible book stores, visit with the Bouquinistes along the Seine before crossing over the bridge to Ile de la Cité. We will see Notre Dame in a way that has never before been seen. Hopefully, we will never see her in this state of disrepair again. Tonight we have VIP seats to a concert held in the Saint Chapelle. This royal chapel was built by King Louis IX to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns. Within the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world, the acoustics during our concert will be beyond compare! Day 5: Four Buck-list Destinations Today we will go up the Arc de Triomphe. This monument is at the centre of possibly the craziest roundabouts in all of Europe. We will go up to the top for a spectacular view of Les Champs Elysées and to watch the 8 lanes of traffic circling us from below. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1570707957878-67AO80Z9O3FX8UVHW7WD/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFQQgP34qnCpeHaeAOzTt7pZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PIedjZT6_OBzi2ofH1EqNdNeCRxNMlbxs9807lIebBlcA/Arc+de+Triomphe.png?format=1500w From here we will stroll Les Champs Elysées, Place de la Concorde and have lunch at Dame de Pic. This is one of many restaurants belonging to Anne Sophie Pic. She is the fourth woman to ever receive 3 Michelin stars. Michelin stars is something well known in her family as her father also had 3 stars and her grandfather received 3 stars in 1934. Then it’s time to discover the mythical sites and secret spaces of the Palais Garnier: the Bassin de la Pythie, the Grand Stairway and the Foyer de la Danse. This is the setting and inspiration of The Phantom of the Opera and we have a private tour of the building and backstage. We will regroup for dinner at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and once the sun has set we will set off for a cruise on the Seine and you will see for yourself why this spectacular city is called The City of Lights. _“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” – Ernest Hemingway Day 6: Secret Gardens, Sipping, and Succulent Feasts The fashionable Marais district is where we will be exploring today. Here we will visit a few different secret gardens. The Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. The surrounding buildings, house shops, galleries, restaurants and, most notably, the Maison de Victor Hugo, where the author lived and wrote for many years. We will visit the small museum to see mementos from Hugo’s childhood as well as the rooms where he wrote Les Miserables. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581688388930-20ARRNY5M66C9299XSJB/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kJK4Mm1kch8SFO9ZNkN1NT97gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z5QHyNOqBUUEtDDsRWrJLTmN9YSRtfoTLg6dUq-6F17A0FFZK5fArcnK1IqGweyunyWChwIwkIJ_P7MaZif-uMs/ibrik.png?format=1500w Not far from here is the Jardin Anne Frank, where a sapling of the chestnut tree she always spoke about was planted in 2009. To get us ready for dinner, we have a private room in Louis XVs cellars with our very own sommelier. In this stunning private room we will learn about wine, while sampling a selection of delicious wines (and food). Can you think of a better apéritif? Keeping the theme of privacy, we will end the day in our own private restaurant. With its open kitchen, we will be able to see the chef create, possibly learn a few tips and definitely some cooking inspiration. Day 7: Eiffel Tower, Art and Food Finale! Today we will meet and eat at the Eiffel Tower. We saved the best for last as we will be treated to chef Frédéric Anton, awarded Meilleur Ouvrier de France, he has said he has just one wish: to run a luxurious Jules Verne with an expert hand offering an unbeatable gastronomic experience and so fill the heart of the mythical Iron Lady. After taking in the sites from the top of the tower, we will immerse ourselves in art at Atelier Lumière. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581952319324-69FPF3UB3Q5VDAG7PU42/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kEh7ITbM-vCwc1BZu6ssEPFZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PI_Kopnc7afHugqTGv5bee5VIijSdyIGEpctAKY2D-k9cKMshLAGzx4R3EDFOm1kBS/Jules%2BVerne.jpg?format=1500w This is an art experience you will never forget. Rather than standing in front of a framed masterpiece, here, the art comes to life and you are literally immersed in it as it is projected on the walls around you, the floor and the ceiling. Nashville: Music Venue Insider Tips

Nashville, Music City Insider Tips! https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b4f623e36099b149c9e6b0c/t/5b53fec003ce640bec7bc3f9/1584052790620/?format=1500w As Director of the Contemporary Music Center in Nashiville, Warren Pettit, knows musicians and venues inside and out. More importantly, he has low tolerance for mediocrity of the same. If you are lucky enough to be selected, for one of just 30 places each college semester, beware! He will ruin your tolerance for sub-par music and lack-luster venues. More over, he will push you to develop your craft so that too you can contribute gloriously to the marvel that is "Music City". Described as an "Edutainer" his students love him and so will you. This is why Warren Pettit is the perfect guest to talk "Insider Nashville". Warren's critical ear and eye for musical craftsmanship, sound production and savvy business skills uniquely suit him for his roll as Director at the Contemporary Music Center. Surrounding himself with staff comprised of industry pros of the same standard, that love young persons, allows the program to thrive - even distance learning through Covid-19. It should be noted that while the staff of the CMC work to pull excellence out of each student, and the standards are high, Warren and the staff are beloved by the students. https://media-exp1.licdn.com/dms/image/C4E03AQGHWGfOPBBPYg/profile-displayphoto-shrink_800_800/0?e=1590624000&v=beta&t=qfbPUFha-m89wKEYUQLr7Ac_IHsdGp0eqWpEE0yaQ0w I proposed Warren tell listeners his top 3- 10 venues for enjoying music in Nashville. His answers were some of the things I would expect, and that populate easily in a google search for the BIG VENUES. And that's great - it confirms their excellence. "If you swing a cat you are going to hit a venue that has live music..." Of more interest to me were Warren's "B List" level venues. These are the smaller venues with impeccable players and intimate settings. Rumor has it there are apple pies served at one of them too! Most notably listed are the venues of 3rd and Lindsley (https://www.3rdandlindsley.com) and the Blue Bird Cafe (https://bluebirdcafe.com). https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/Kw93nkGs.jpg "...If you are a tourist... Here's the good news. Everyone is in the industry and after work - nobody goes to shows..." His last suggestion painted such a visual and audible picture for me I had to google it. Simply, walk mid-day, down South Broadstreet. Warren has promised a musical experience of epic proportions that will proverbially "blow your mind". He estimates that there are around 68 Honky Tonk bars full of session players, road musicians and the likes just cranking out music all the live long day through the early hours of the night. Keep in mind, this experience cost you nothing. So, purposely walk up to one of the bands tip jar and bless them with a few "thank you" bucks. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/88a28e_80e0bf0829fa42858d27e5b0907989e7~mv2_d_1740_1675_s_2.png/v1/fill/w_1200,h_1158,al_c,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/88a28e_80e0bf0829fa42858d27e5b0907989e7~mv2_d_1740_1675_s_2.png (https://www.hocnashville.com) Lastly, I pressed Warren for a favorite dining venue to. I had not prepped him for this question but I was super pleased with his answer! Check out a hidden venue underneath the Johnny Cash Museum. Getting there and admitted through the secret door is just the first of the illusions you'll experience at House of Cards. Your excellent meal with be followed by a magic performance on their private stage, Carter the Great showroom. Then guests are invited to wander the venue and interact with close up magic and illusionists on a more intimate level. Hold onto your hats - things start to disappear left and right! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/kJO0F9qb.jpg (https://www.hocnashville.com) Concluding the show Warren welcomes listeners to visit his city but please stay a tourist! He jokes about the increase of traffic in the last 20 years. Enjoy Nashville and then go home! As with all music venues closing, and this article/podcast too - You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here! Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast. Project Chimps | USA ROAD TRIP!

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2020 27:26

Project Chimps - Not Wild But FREE! Pack up the minivan, this is a USA road trip worthy destination! Make it a multi-day stop with a hike on the Appalachian Trail (southern most trailhead is close by) and a stop at the largest Big Foot Museum in the USA. I asked my kids, "How would you like to put on a parade for chimpanzees at Halloween time?". I got one very excited "YES" and one absolute "NO". To be fair, the negative was a four year old that was not allowed to have ALL of the markers. I followed up by asking, "What if you dressed up like a monkey?" He changed his mind, "...YES, then they will all come to see me!" You got it buddy. That is exactly what happens at Project Chimps for the "Chimp or Treat" event. Children are invited to dress up and participate in a parade put on FOR THE CHIMPS to enjoy! The chimps in residence love children and they love them in colorful, creative attire even more. If your costume is particularly good you will be rewarded by a chimp or two at the window gazing curiously back at you. Rather than the zoo approach that makes the animals the spectacle, this puts the people on display for the animals to enjoy. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/DiscoveryDays.jpg This type of event typifies, in a good way, the type of care these former research chimps receive on a daily basis. Due to years spent in research labs these animals can't be released into the wild. They wouldn't know how to cope outside an enclosed area, forge for food or defend themselves. At Project Chimps, the resident chimpanzees experience freedom to roam and encounter people on their own terms on their own timeline. My guest, Ali Crumpacker, says the first thing guests want to know is if they get to hug a chimp. I will say it a little more sternly than she would... NO! No how and no way! In so many ways this is not safe for humans and not respectful of the animals. After years of negative interactions with humans the animals now get to live safe, minimally invasive lives. Project Chimps aims to keep it this way. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Ali-Crumpacker.jpg Now don't be sad about the chimp cuddle you hoped for. There are a lot more ways to participate at Project Chimps. If you are up for a short hike you can tour the chimp enclosure with a Project Chimps guide. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn badges and more through cooperation of the friendly staff. Local persons can volunteer onsite regularly doing chimpanzee care, enrichment activities, gardening, communications, fundraising, events and facilities maintenance. College students with qualifying areas of study will find rewarding internships at Project Chimps too. Not local but still want to volunteer? Take a Chimpcation! Spend a week onsite and stay on the property while listening the the chimps sing at the moon. Please ask about age requirements or to arrange age appropriate participation. In addition to the regular visitation and volunteer opportunities you can also book special events. Seated in the foothills of the Blue Mountains the property is just stunning. Why not get married in the mountains, next to a private lake with the chimps in the trees chattering around you? For the nature lover this sounds like a dream and so is the price. I'm not going to spoil the reservation price. You will have to look it up yourself - they aren't charging enough! (https://projectchimps.org/events/private-events/) Private rentals also come with a private Chimp Enclosure tour (prior to any alcohol be served). https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/PC-Couple-by-Pond.jpg At the moment Project Chimps has 79 resident Chimpanzees in two, 3 acre enclosures. They live in small family groups. The sanctuary is 236 acres to offer excellent expansion options. The goal is to house more than 200 chimpanzees and expand the family groups to more similarly reflect those of their truly wild counterparts. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Almasi-with-Sky-Habitat.jpg Each chimpanzee requires approximately $22,000 per year to feed and house. None of this could be possible without donations. In addition to monetary contributions there are other ways to support Project Chimps. There are links below to Project Chimp’s Amazon wish list and more. If you are road tripping consider looking around your house and packing some of these items (https://projectchimps.org/wishlist/). Coronavirus Update (date): Project Chimps has temporarily suspended visits following the guidance of the US Centers for Disease Control. They are still booking visits after May 10. See all of the options and updates at projectchimps.org/visit -------------- Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast (https://www.travelradioonline.com). Aloha From Quarantine! Cruise Ship to Military Base

The Spirit of Aloha in Quarantine... (NOTE: This is information from an interview with Brian and Rowena Vasquez's first hand account. Medical advise and references for Coronavirus related matters should be derived from the WHO (https://www.who.int) or CDC (https://www.cdc.gov).) Brian and Rowena Vasquez, ambassadors of Aloha for Princess Cruise Lines, ukulele and hula instructors are locked in but not down. These two can be counted on for a smile or kind word not matter where they are. Brian even plays "Over The Rainbow" at the conclusion of the episode and it is a delight. https://imagery.zoogletools.com/u/43206/0c464ebfa7fefda69e675a0b484842557cb0b131/original/BR-cropped.jpg A regularly scheduled itinerary to Hawaii turned into Pacific circling when information surfaced that a guest on the previous sailing tested positive for Covid-19. San Francisco's mayor refused to allow the ship to doc and so it circled... for days. The onboard map showed the ship's path looking something like a toddlers repeat first attempts at round shapes. Finally, reaching an agreement with the city of, Oakland, California, they were allowed to dock. Persons needing medical attention were evacuated first. Then, according to Brian and Rowena, the CDC took over. Princess staff complied and adapted to everything asked of them. The remaining passengers were delayed getting off the ship by union members (Rowen assumes longshoremen) claiming unloading contracts and requiring additional time to get union laborers to the docks. Union members then refused to load baggage onto the passenger shuttle busses as this task did not fall into their labor contract. This delayed disembarkation further as Princess employees now had to return to the ship dock to take the task over. Guests and crew were largely waiting nervous and without information at this time. As a company caught in the middle of CDC, State/ Federal government regulations, unions and a damning news cycle Princess Cruise Lines was battered by a storm worse than any they've faced on the open sea. Brian and Rowena are quick to point out that as the changes came, new procedures rolled out, new isolation policies put in place Princess employees were amazing through out. Captain John Smith proved to be a leader and encourager in a way he likely never thought her would have to be. Prior to docking in Oakland, the ships programming and operations took shape in a new way. The dining rooms were shut down. Menus were delivered to each room three times a day for guests to order. The staff snapped into action adapting to the new routine. Bars were put on carts and guests were served in their rooms. Brian and Rowena pitched in and helped to entertainment staff create and deliver daily activity pack to each room. The contents were items like, quiz and trivia sheets to do along with the ships onboard televised programming. Rowena also provided hula lessons for in-room learning. After the debacle of waiting to disembark persons were dispersed to four locations. Brian and Rowena are in condo like complex with other persons from the ship. They are served by military members in hazmat suits. They are in a one bedroom unit and can access a common kitchen area stocked with excellent snack foods. There is also an area to get outside. Brain strolls and Rowen power walks her way around. They try to go out very early and late to avoid contact with other people. Brian and Rowena are keeping busy while in quarantine. (Well... Rowena pokes fun at Brian for being lazy and not writing another album... he just chuckles.) Rowena is writing her second book on native knowledge and culture lessons she was raised with. Playa Please: Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Resort Reviews

In the Playa (brand) ... Family Of Resorts! Dominican Republic, Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resorts You know you want to visit the Dominican Republic. The blue waters and sugary sand are calling your name... BUT, GOSH DARN IT! Too Many Choices How do you sort through all the all-inclusive properties!? Picking the right one, or the wrong one, could make or break your vacation. This week I welcome back my recent guest, Michelle Tatum, to discuss her very recent trip to four Playa Hotels and Resorts in the Dominican Republic. Topics include: Language is both English and Spanish. The locals dominantly speak Spanish. Use this as an opportunity to practice those rusty skills! Give it a try, it will go a long way with your hosts! It is a small kindness that shows you care! Dollars are accepted on property. Tipping - not necessary for included services. However, make sure to tip for added services. These include your room butler and spa technicians. Two Family Resorts: Hyatt Ziva... This family property is on the nicest beach (Michelle's trust worthy opinion). It is super high-end, described as located in the "Beverly Hills" area, while maintaining a playful color scheme that appeals to families. On this property families will find kids clubs (Drop them off for your DAILY DATE with your partner) or race each other on the four abreast slide in the water park. Little ones can enjoy water play on the splash pad. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/HC8PxzdJ.jpg Hungry? Just walk to the food truck to grab your littles their favorite and familiar favorites. They will find hamburgers, hot dogs and the like. Mom and Dad, you just hold off one more minute to eat. Place the kids back in the kids club and explore the resorts many gourmet dining options! Or, walk to the Hyatt Zilara next door for adults only dining venues. Resort rooms are available in a King option or with large double beds. This property offers connecting rooms. PUMP IT UP - This resort features a purpose built, state-of-the-art, 14,000 sq ft fitness center. Spaces include yoga areas, Peloton bikes, free weights, cross fit and more! Hilton La Romana: This is a recently aquired and renovated property ( it was formerly a Dreams property). It's about a 75 minute drive from Punta Cana and a 55min drive from the La Romana airport. Pack some snacks for the drive - you won't regret it! The drive is worth it! Are you a Hilton Honors member? You can earn Hilton Honors points at this property too! This resort just opened a water park that is hyped to be larger than the Ziva. Jump in and get the vacation started! Rooms are similar set up with options and connections to the Hyatt Ziva. Of note, there is an age restriction on the Ocean Front Jr. Suite Swim Out Rooms due it's proximity to the adults only side of the property (Hyatt Zilara). Dining options are plentiful to include Italian, French, Souther American, Grilled Seafood and more! Hello high rollers! Put it all on RED. This property boasts a casino! ADULTS ONLY PROPERTIES: Sanctuary: Take a step inside... are you in the DR or a romantic castle ruin somewhere in the Mediterranean? There a six pools, swim ups too, and roof top pool! The beach is private to the resort. There are only 323 suits giving this property a very boutique feel. Some suits offer butler service with 17 categories in total (don't let that overwhelm you; call your travel agent). The highest level suit is a private island option boasting several pools within the suit itself! The dark woods of the decor with remind you of colonial style but with contemporary couches, chairs and other modern touches. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/RpmjC85c.jpg On site activities include a Healthy Corner for health nuts to find smoothies and activities catered to them. The piano bar was formerly a church - gasp! Go enjoy it's groovy new vibes. Close by is a gold course designed by Jack Nicolas. Sancturary Town is a town within the resort offering dancing, shopping and opportunities to socialize with the locals who come for a nice night out. Entrance is complimentary to guests of the resort. The spa is as amazing as you would expect and water activities are also available. Dining is anything from Italian, sushi, steaks, fresh daily caught seafood, the juice bar and more! Dining is both in the property and within Sanctuary town. Do you get the munchies at 2am after dancing the night away? Order 24hrs room service! Hyatt Zilara: This is the property that is next door to Hyatt Ziva. It offers all the same amazing amenities as the Hyatt Ziva with the exception of the kids clubs because it is ADULTS ONLY! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/PN5msc0u.jpg The stand out feature of this adults only resort is the SPA! It was built to remind the spa goer of a ceynote. The high walls, rock outcroppings, open air ceiling and water fall bring it all nicely together. The spa features the first Himalayan Salt Lounge. -------------- Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast (https://www.travelradioonline.com). She credits their success to a combination of fun, relaxation, time and immersion. You will be out of your everyday life routine in a space with no interruptions, no rushing off and more importantly not allowing time to go by before the next lesson. There is nothing more frustrating than starting a lesson only to realise you have forgotten half of what was learnt the week prior. These retreats don't allow for that. The speed of learning and understanding increases each and everyday as there is no time to forget anything. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1542300448406-CW8OER113FY56B2DZ2JI/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kLkiMMELRWuXuiPKSoDshMFZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWEtT5uBSRWt4vQZAgTJucoTqqXjS3CfNDSuuf31e0tVHKlDSwjHvm9bNEOoCWMFsqZPBd_u-xvtIf1VVw-jHrgXabq7Bp_UDyUGhG1qO9rm8/8.jpg?format=500w Instead Therese creates a nice relaxing environment to just concentrate on the language and have fun! Basically, it's a vacation where you would walk away with improved language skills as a bonus. Everyone will be learning everyday expressions that they probably would have never covered otherwise. The goal is to have so much fun that you don't realise you are learning every minute of the day. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1570708645228-5K1T9WE5YPR7ZPNM4XE3/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFQQgP34qnCpeHaeAOzTt7pZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PIedjZT6_OBzi2ofH1EqNdNeCRxNMlbxs9807lIebBlcA/Paris.png?format=500w Theresa hopes for a chain effect in learning. The more students learn, the more confident they are. With confidence comes more practice. The more they practice the more they learn… https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1562765094509-38YG3F7QVENZ35QXWQJ4/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kKlnEJe-S6O_EkCaG3agFGRZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PI5hzhLde4hvatJsNly355ffNU5CmVUljmMZYTraQzQ-A/Eiffel+Tower.png?format=500w Often the progress we make in one week, is similar, if not better than the progress made in a year of once a week lessons. Hopefully, after the third day participants will be thinking, even dreaming in the target language. Therese believes this style of learning is powerful and something I think everyone needs to experience! Special Guest: Therese Lafleche.

The Canary Islands, Madeira, Malaga & Lisbon By Sea When North American's (I'm including Canada too) think about going someplace tropical the easiest choices are options with short, direct flights. It is no surprise that Mexico and the Caribbean are popular, quick, price friendly choices. At an average of 14 vacation days, who can blame them for wanting to get on vacation with as little hassle as possible. It is not surprising that It's no different for the Brits and Europeans. Located even further North, the days are even shorter, often overcast and colder in those longitudes. With more vacation days on hand and vitamin deficiencies to solve, they go on the hunt for sunshine! Tourists are largely British and German citizens but a few of us other nationalities manage to slip in! Our 11 night cruise on board the Explorer of the Seas, Royal Caribbean, turned into a 14 night cruise due to sequential storms preventing our return to Southampton, England. The itinerary included the planned ports of the Canary Islands and Madeira. Then we continue with the new schedule adding on Malaga, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal. The Explorer of the Seas is set for a refit in Spring of 2020. I set out to have a complaint free show and the show notes will be the same. If you would like to read a blog article I wrote about the experience CLICK HERE. Before diving into the ports I would like to thank the many people who brought Cruising Ducks into our lives. This was the best seek and find adventure of my son's life. You had the kids exploring the ship and roaming for hours! Thank you so much for your extra care packing these fun ducks! This fantastic, mountainous island offers a thrill seekers must do the Madeira Tobagon ride. We definitely cheated death! If you enjoy roller coasters, bungee cord free falls and tempting fate this is for you. Tenereife is where we enjoyed a beach day on Las Teresitas. The white sand, native sand is black, was imported in the 70s from the Sahara. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for daily rates at only a few Euros. This can be accessed via public transportation or a transfer from your cruise line. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/yqrhamjx.jpg Lanzarote, is an island to walk on the moon! Vegieation was scarce and all the water on the island is produced by desalination systems. Don't waste the water! This island is all about volcanic activity. Tour the national parks, ride a camel over the "moonscape". If you want to make camel friends use fragrant shampoo. (see pic below). Take a moment to taste volcanic-grown wine. It is a labor or love pulled from the harsh environment and not exported. If you are hungry make a reservation to eat your meal at, , a resturant where they cook your food right over the volcanic heat of the earth's core! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/mPDRBfd-.jpg Gran Canaria is significant to us as American's. Christopher Columbus would resupply his ships on this island before contining to explore the "new world". The Christopher Columbus house is an excellent resource that our children HATED. If you have the time to invest the exhibits are excellent. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/enMd_qYD.jpg After returning our children to the ship we enjoyed the Playa Las Canteras and beach. This is a shopping and swimming area lined with hotels and places to eat. It could be compared to the Strand in California. While this is a super family friendly, destination it should be noted that the water here is very turbulent. It was great fun as adults to play but the force that day would make me hesitant to take the children out far. It's here we had our best gastronomic expereince of the trip. Finish your own steaks with sea salt and marinade on a piping hot lava rock. Then rent a beach chair to sleep off the indulgence! Tropical fish are visible in the ocean from the pier. Malaga, Spain is the birthplace of Picasso and location of several museums dedicated to his life and work. From Cathedrals to Arabic Forts and tapas this is a destination that really deserves a week to explore. See the show note links below for an audio tour put out but the Tourism Board of Malaga! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/XqgO-q7g.jpg Lisbon, Portugal is credited as Europe's least expensive capital city. From our personal experience we think that is probably true. Local wines are excellent and pair well with traditional cod dishes. Make sure to observe the tables around you when ordering your food, Meals described as tapas may be enough to feed two people! We definitely over ordered our first couple tries but figured it out for future ordering. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/uEkTsmG4.jpg In order to get an overview of the city and it's history we recommend a guided tour to start. Why not travel by tuk-tuk? We received a local recommendation and were paired with Lino Rebeira. Lino also comes child endorsed! He worked hard to make the trip entertaining and educational for our children. Lino knows his city and is passionate about its history. Do you have to use the toilet? Want to know where the best custards are? Just ask! He'll point you to great dining too. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/SHRwEvTN.jpg Special Guest: Joseph Chapa.

Game of Thrones: Red Wedding, Black Dinner and Giants OH MY!

Welcome to the second installment of David Weinczok's interview on the real places and history that inspire Game of Thrones. In his book (see links below) there is an excellent map (map in previous episode's show notes) of where these location are in Scotland. Today's episode includes a chapter on mythical creatures, gods and more (....muahahahahaha, insert very Halloween feeling here...) Specifically, we talk the giants of Westeros vs the traditional giant of Scottish folklore. https://nt.global.ssl.fastly.net/images/1431735893652-causewaysunsethorizon.jpg?width=1170&auto=webp&crop=16:7 (Photo credit National Trust, UK) The second chapter we cover gets into the Black Dinner. This is an actual (two) event(s) that inspired the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. Discussing guest rights, as a common practice in history, is really interesting as presented by David. https://www.stewartsociety.org/historical-images/1015153811.jpg (Photo credit Stewart Society) The episode concludes with what is next for David, how you can contact him and where he will be signing books soon. I hope this episode inspires you to visit Scotland and of course, buy David's book (I'm not even paid to say that)! David's guest page is here. The History Behind Game of Thrones The North Remembers David Weinczok is back so - "LET'S GEEK OUT ON CASTLES!" David is a Canadian born, castle enthusiast, daily found waist high in nettles, tramping the ground of a Scottish castle. There are approximately 2,000 castles to conquer and David has put (to date) 400 under his own foot. Powered by a passion for history, and a love for the environment David gets to most of these sites via bicycle. David has yet to find a dragon in his journeys. However, the patterns he noticed and the history he uncovered made him literally jump out of his seat watching Game of Thrones. He was watching a fictionalized explainer on the actual events of Scottish history and folklore. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/tsFiUTn-.jpg (https://nordvpn.com/?utm_medium=affiliate&utm_term&utm_content&utm_campaign=off&utm_source=aff) There was a tourism companion to be written and a map to be drawn! David took on this challenge and the result is the newly released, "The History Behind Game of Thrones The North Remember" and the, "Scotland and the Lands Beyond The Wall Map". Both the book and the map aim to help enthusiasts visit the real life Scotish locations that inspired many parts of Game of Thrones. PART 1: Today's episode will feature two chapters from David's book and the Map. The next episode will feature two more. I editing I noticed that it was really long and wanted to make a clean break for listener ease. David also talks about his "fan boy" moment while observing Game of Thrones actors sharing a quiet and cominal moment that would have been unthinkable in the Game of Thrones series. 13th Century Map of Britain http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/mapsviews/mapgb/mattparismaplge.jpg Matthew Paris 13th Century Map The first chapter we feature today will focus on the actual land of Scotland. Key points of geography and castles that serve as strategic defense points for both Scotland and Game of Thrones. So significant are these factors they led to the real life Black Dinner and the fictional Red Wedding! Scotland And The Lands Beyond the Wall Map https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/assets/img/scotland-and-the-lands-beyond-the-wall.jpg Scotland And The Lands Beyond the Wall Map, credit Bob Marshall, historical illustrator. David compares the Lord of the Isles and the Isles men to the Ironborn. In a real battle David says he would pick the Islesmen. He makes some interesting observations. Lastly, we talk about the art or lack there of as seen in these two cultures. David reads a portion of his book that captures these sentiments perfectly. Please see the links below to find David's book and the map. Special Guest: David Weinczok.

The wide paved bicycle paths make for excellent cycling along the rivers Mosel and Saar, partly in Germany, partly in Luxembourg, partly in France. We’ll enjoy leisurely rides along tranquil vineyards with stops along the way to taste the local wines, many of which are only available in this region. Among them are excellent dry Ries- lings and Roter-Weinbergs-Pfirsich Likör - a cordial made from the small, tart "red peaches" grown only in the Mosel Valley. We’ll visit the enchanting cities of Cochem and Bernkastel, with their castles, ruins, and medieval town squares surrounded by half- timbered homes and shops. We’ll overnight in Trier, the oldest city in Germany, whose three-story Roman gate, the Porta Nigra, dates back to the first century AD. From Trier the tour will follow the river Saar to visit charming Saarburg and its splendid water- falls. We’ll continue into the welcoming villages of Luxembourg and then on to France where we’ll sip on the sweet, smooth wines and the golden Mirabellen plum liqueur for which this corner of Alsace is known. Flying Iceland Air

Flying Iceland Air Into Reykjavík https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/ZB6f2hnT.jpeg I've been asked many times what it is like to fly on Iceland Air. So, for a recent trip to the United States I opted to fly Iceland Air purposely. In this episode you will find the nuts, bolts and Ramen of the situation. Is Iceland Air right for you? Listen to find out! A couple observations: The flight attendants were all tall gorgeous and blonde. I'm not making that up. It's the truth. They were also all very nice and spoke english and mutiple other languages. For funsies - pay close attention to their mouths. When they switch from Icelandic to English or any other western dialect. When speaking in their native toungue they speak on their IN BREATH. It makes for some thrilling ear candy. Then, they very naturally, switch back to what I consider, normal breath/speaking Western patterns. It's wild. Enjoy - you're welcome. BLANKETS! Iceland Air has amazing blankets made from very heavey grey fleece. Men will be pleased that an airplane blanket actually covers them neck to toes. I pulled down my eye mask and had a very satisfying nap. In-Flight Food Service: Meal Service is pulling a solid "meh" rating. The menu is gorgeous and makes you feel like you are ordering off a real menu. Beware, there is no room or time to plate items in the air from the drink cart. However the item you ordered is originally packaged is how the item comes to you. I ordered the spicey vegetarian noodles as a "good idea" to warm myself up. Can you guess what it was? It cost $4.00 which is 10x what it costs off the grocer's shelf. In the end it did the trick. LONG LAYOVERS: Consider a long layover in Iceland! The country is offering greater than average layovers on purpose for flights through Reykjavík. They want to encurage tourism and it is now bumped up on my bucket list of places to take the family. Talk to your travel planner and plan out a mini vacation inside your exisiting itinerary! Airport Insights: Reykjavík is a small airport. There is possibly only one gate where the airplane actually can dock at the gate. All other planes will let passengers out onto the tarmac and onto shuttle buses. This is a going to be a very brisk sprint. I was traveling to and from warm locations and it was CHILLY. So, FYI, at least pack a sweater incase you have delays before you get inside. Airport Accessibility: The accessibilty of Reykjavík's airport is up for debate. The bathrooms I used on both stops were up and down stairs. Upon departure, myself and another guest (girlfriend, I wish I remembered your name) ended up carrying an elderly lady's belongings she continually dropped between the gate and the airplane, across the tarmac. We then ended up offering significant pysical support to her climbing up the plane steps and into her seat. She said they promised her assistance, a wheelchair and ramp but were unwilling or unable to assist her upon arriving at the airport. That's her story and she is sticking to it. Either way - I'm thankful for a kind American softball player who was willing to boost this lady along the way. Duty Free Store: There is a pretty nice duty free store inside the airport. In fact, it takes up just about half the footage. The items I was most interested in were the liquor and chocolate. After much debate I did not purchase seaweed alcohol. I did purchase several rounds of Icelandic chocolate. Buy Icelandic chocolate. You will not be sad. Flight Path: If you are lucky the flight path will put you over Greenland. It is a frozen splendor to behold. Book a window seat if this is something you would like to see. I ended up holding many phones and taking pictures for othe people that were not seated at a window. Pics from Greenland below. https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/3ohKBVM4.jpeg https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/qYWd8N2a.jpeg

Nearly 400 years ago the history of the Passion Play began. The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not spare Oberammergau either. In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore. The villagers were answered by God and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. The promise has been kept until today. From May 16th to October 4th 2020 the 42nd Passion Play will take place in Oberammergau. ~ Information provided by the official Oberammergau Website: https://www.passionsspiele-oberammergau.de/en/home Yes - It's 2 years away - but you must plan now! Why should you go? Judy paints the picture of the years or preperation, dedication, faith, and grooming standards the actors must adhere too. Art and music lovers will also be drawn to this Passion Play. There are many ways to see Oberammergau and the local area to include land tours, guided trips and river cruising! Judy talks about some of the options and why each is unique and the benefits of doing each one. Enjoy and if you travel to Oberammergau, please provide us some stories on your experience! ~Megan Chapa Special Guest: Judith Romera Yirsa.
