On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with entrepreneur and passionate foodie Alex Canter. The 4th generation of Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, Canter loves trying new places. Canter publishes a list of his favorite 100 restaurants in LA every year and, every week, he posts his favorite bites on Instagram via @DeliBoySwag. “That's been a fun way to keep track of the places that I'm going,” he says. In May Canter launched the Hot Pastrami podcast, which he co-hosts with Lily Rosenthal, a restaurateur and New York Times bestselling author. Note: Lily and her father, Phil Rosenthal (“Somebody Feed Phil”), were guests on Taste Buds with Deb in March to coincide with the release of “Just Try It!” Canter and Rosenthal, who both grew up in Los Angeles, showcase amazing restaurants and talk about all things food. “Every episode, we interview different special guests, whether it's an actor, a comedian, a chef or restaurateur,” he explains. Their guests have included Henry Winkler, Tiffany Haddish, B.J. Novak and Josh Peck. Each episode is filmed at a booth in Canter's Deli over bowls of matzo ball soup and pastrami sandwiches. While Canter grew up on corned beef, as the podcast title suggests, he is now more of a pastrami guy. Canter talks about the podcast, his foodie and restaurant backstory, and tips and recommendations for dining out. He also shares Canter's recipe for cheese blintzes, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. The Hot Pastrami podcast is produced and distributed by Cloud10 and Clamor. SBE Hospitality Group and virtual brand platform C3's founder and CEO Sam Nazarian has acquired Nextbite, just days after Nation's Restaurant News reported that Nextbite's order management arm, Ordermark, had been sold off to Indian software company UrbanPiper. Nextbite and its virtual brands —which includes both original and licensed brands such as Packed Bowls by Wiz Khalifa, Shawarmama, Nestle Toll House Cookies, IHOP, Super Mega Dilla, Thrilled Cheese, Fuku, George Lopez Tacos, and Nathan's Famous — will live on under the ownership of its former competitor as Nextbite by SBE, but will operate separately from C3's own virtual brands, which include Umami Burger, Krispy Rice, and Sam's Crispy Chicken.Leadership will pass from CEO Alex Canter — who founded Nextbite in 2020 after merging the then-flourishing virtual restaurant company with technology platform Ordermark — to Nazarian, and operations will be relocated to C3's headquarters in Miami. According to Food on Demand, a “suite” of former Nextbite executives will stay on board with the company under new ownership.
This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a production of Nation’s Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Leigh Anne Zinsmeister, Sam Oches and Joanna Fantozzi discussed former Red Robin CEO Denny Marie Post’s new job at Nextbite, the virtual-dining company. Earlier this week, Post signed on to become co-president of Nextbite alongside Paul Allen, reporting to CEO Alex Canter. The former large-chain exec will help the growing virtual brand company in her field of expertise: marketing. The team discussed what this means for the brand and also the future of marketing for all brands, how important it is to market a brand and how it should be done. Next, the team discussed value promotions. Recently, chains have been coming out with value promotions amid the rising cost of goods and surging menu prices. For a while, chain executives said customers were ok with price hikes, yet it seems the tables have turned, the team observed, as places like White Castle are releasing value promotions with lowered prices. This week’s interview is Robert Maynard, CEO of Famous Toastery, who spoke with Fantozzi about inflation and how it’s impacted his business.

Alex Canter is CEO of Nextbite, which states as its goal "to ensure every kitchen with extra capacity is not only surviving, but thriving" with off-premises virtual brand sales. Alex is not just a young tech entrepreneur. He is a savvy and seasoned restaurateur, who at age 12 started working in his family's business - the landmark Canter's Deli, an iconic Los Angeles dining destination serving locals, tourists, and celebrities. Alex successfully preserved the time-honored traditions of a fourth-generation family-owned restaurant while modernizing it with cutting-edge technology to streamline operations and online ordering. In the process. Alex discovered his passion for restaurant industry innovation. "If you aren't thinking about the next generation of your restaurant, there may not be one," he says. In this episode we learn how Alex conceived and developed Nextbite to help independent operators maximize revenue with very little additional operating costs. "Fitting the right virtual brand into an independently owned restaurant operation helps raise revenue from currently underutilized kitchens," he explains. Nextbite's successful virtual brands include George Lopez Tacos, Wichcraft, Crave Burger, Wild Wild Wings, Grilled Cheese Society, Lucky Dragon, and many more. Nextbite also provides menu execution and operations assistance, and an ordering platform that simplifies third-party delivery orders and transactions. Alex also explains the company's unique revenue-sharing program with partner restaurant operators. Considering takeout and third-party delivery sales comprise as much as half the revenue for many independent operators, that alone is good reason to tune in and learn Alex's bold vision of the future of off-premises dining.
Alex as an amazing story to tell. His family started the renowned deli, Canter's, in Los Angeles. He went on to start Ordermark, a system that consolidates the online ordering and third party delivery brands into one device and central hub. From there he launched Nextbite, a leader in virtual restaurant brands. In this episode, we discuss his journey, and tap into the various aspects of virtual brands and how to launch them and market them successfully. Many things shifted in the restaurant industry during the pandemic. A lot of restaurants were forced to change and change quickly to keep up with ever-evolving regulations. Many restaurants transitioned to online, pick-up, and delivery models, which will most likely stick around. On this episode of The Main Course, Host Barbara Castiglia talked with Alex Canter, CEO of Ordermark, which helps restaurants increase efficiency and grow profits by aggregating mobile orders across all of the major online-ordering services into a single dashboard and printer. The duo talked about what's next for the restaurant industry post-pandemic, technology in restaurants, and Ordermark/Nextbite.“This last year has been absolutely devastating for our industry,” Canter said. “We've seen over 100,000 restaurants permanently shut their doors, which is really just a difficult number to digest.”For the restaurants that made it through to the other side, it is a much different world. General managers, owners, chefs, and front-of-house must now rely more heavily on digital tools in the restaurant. The shift was expected to happen over the next ten years, but COVID-19 accelerated that shift in just a few short months.“Pretty much every restaurant from fine dining to fast-casual to QSR has figured out a digital strategy, a delivery strategy, and has had to get really creative to make it to this point,” Canter said. “I'm really impressed with the way restaurants have adapted. It's always been who we are as restaurant owners, people who are resilient.”
I often wonder what the next generation thinks when they look at the way we do business. They grew up with the internet as a part of their daily life and they go to work in restaurants with POS systems older than they are. Well, it appears they've had quite enough of that... Alex Canter is a new breed of restaurateur working to fix the problems he sees within the industry by creating the solutions himself. Today we discuss the tech he created to serve his own needs and how we, as an industry, can benefit from his efforts. If you are joining us for the first time or have been listening to us since the beginning, please consider leaving us a positive review on your podcast feed, wherever you listen to us. Today we talk about moving away from your main brand to survive through these times of COVID and beyond. Flexibility is so important during these times. Some of the areas we will cover to begin the conversation of bridging the gap between restaurants and hotels are food lockers, virtual kitchens and ghost kitchens. These are all items that a hotel may not have thought about and maybe might also give some thought to a restaurant that might have a connection with a hotel to dig into the concept of utilizing their kitchens. Remember, the success behind any brand that is trying to launch a ghost or virtual kitchen is the proximity and the radius of their kitchen to their ideal target group. More than likely, hotels fit that criteria, therefore, are a perfect criteria for this type of concept. Today is unusual due to the fact I am being interviewed instead of me interviewing somebody else. This was recorded for the Hotel Next conference that went live in the early part of December. I just receive permission to release this to all of you so I wanted to share it because there is good use case scenarios on both sides of the business. As I begin my final week at USA TODAY Monday, after 36 years of service, naturally, many people have asked me the question. What does it feel like to be hanging up your hat after so many years? In a word: weird. Kind of hard to believe. I'm really excited about the next chapter, and bigger focus on video, photography and blogging, but at the same time, it's not like I hate the day job. I'm not singing “Take this job and shove it.” This year I worked on Christmas Day, the day after, and even Sunday. And I'll be working on New Year's Day, which I believe will then be my swan song. I like to put in the hours, even after I quit. (To accept the generous buyout of payment through September not to work for Gannett.)Oh yes. How do I feel? It will be very odd to hand the computer back and adjust to my new name. (Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY has to be retired.) Most of my career I've worked from home, so it's not like it will be an adjustment not to drive to the office. But I know things are going to be very different. How often are my PR friends going to be “circling back,” and “bubbling this up to the top of your inbox,” post January 4? Will I still get fodder to make fun of from my e-mail?Doubtful, but I'll live. Still, I'm thrilled I made the decision to exit now, and can't wait to get started. Meanwhile, to celebrate, my pal Rich DeMuro recently went down memory lane with me for 20 years of tech highlights on my Talking Tech podcast. My USA TODAY editor Michelle Maltais took a deep dive with me on the early, mostly pre-tech years for a 45 minute video I'm still editing. Another friend, Jan Schrieber, interviewed me about growing up, and how I got into journalism in a very non-traditional manner. (Video coming soon.) And I'll be on Christine Blackburn's Storyworthy podcast this week talking about it. Meanwhile, I compiled a really nice 8 minute highlight reel of the Talking Tech years. On this episode of The DroidDevCast podcast, Esper Platform Evangelist Rin Oliver sat down with Alex Canter, CEO at Ordermark, and Esper COO Shiv Sundar to discuss the evolution of the restaurant industry, ghost kitchens, and bringing new technology and logistics into the restaurant ordering and management experience. As a fourth-generation owner of the famous Jewish Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, Canter focused his energies on not only incorporating new technology into the restaurant, but in revolutionizing the order experience via third-party delivery options such as Uber Eats, GrubHub, and Doordash. Fact is 82% of the Dining Public Order Out! If your restaurant isn’t taking online orders, you’re missing lots of sales and potential profit. I have always believed that you can’t have too many profit centers in your restaurant and this one is a must have. Problem is many systems require you to have multiple tablets from each of the delivery platforms to receive orders. Talk about a nightmare. But today, I’m talking with an industry veteran who’s disrupting the old way with an innovative online ordering solution. One dashboard, one printer all integrating with your POS system. Best part is, all the major delivery platforms are also onboard. That’s right, Ubereats, Eat Street, Eat24 and all the rest are there. Join me in speaking with Alex Canter with OrderMark. We’re Obsessed and that’s a Good Thing: Obsession is the word of the day at Entrepreneur Weekly. Alex Canter, 4th generation owner and operator of the historic Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, is positively obsessed with helping old school restaurants embrace technology to catapult their business to new heights. After implementing an online ordering service at his family’s restaurant, Alex quickly grew frustrated with managing orders from multiple services like Grubhub and DoorDash. Each new online ordering platform increased revenue, but came at a cost; proprietary software, hardware, and staff training for each service lead to an operations nightmare. Find out how Alex’s passion for problem solving gave birth to Ordermark, a consolidated online ordering interface that merges hometown eateries with e-commerce. Next, Patrick Campbell, Co-founder and CEO of ProfitWell, says you need to be ‘customer obsessed’ if you hope to convert leads into revenue. Patrick feels that subscription companies are uniquely positioned to provide the ultimate customer service experience; consumers reevaluate the value proposition at the end of each term giving businesses the impetus to constantly improve their offerings or face dwindling returns. Learn how ProfitWell is redefining the subscription business by providing free, data-driven insights. Alex Canter was born with a stainless steel spoon in his mouth, and on that spoon was a really excellent matzoh ball. Alex is among the fourth generation of Canter family members who learned about business early by working at the 87-old deli institution in Los Angeles. Canter's Deli is a Jewish-style restaurant that has been open 24 hours a day for the last 87 years. There is no lock on the door. When Alex began working at the restaurant, he saw that online ordering and food delivery were becoming a major part of the future opportunity for the business. Walk-in customers were down, and Alex wanted Canter's to triumph in this new age. He signed up for nine ordering services and saw the impact of the new revenue stream. He also saw the perils, with separate, non-integrated tablets behind the counter for Seamless, Grubhub, Uber Eats, and more. Orders were being lost, customers were having to wait when they arrived to pick up their food, the staff was confused. In this chaos, Alex Canter saw an opportunity to bring the more than 175 online ordering companies into a single point of sale system that could communicate with the front of house and back of house and fulfill the customer promise of hot food served seamlessly. Ordermark was born, allowing Canter's and thousands of other restaurant partners to manage all online ordering partner companies from a single device. In this episode of the Real Leader's podcast with Sue Heilbronner, hear Alex's story of growing up in an old-school restaurant family and bringing his gifts of vision and technical acumen to the table to create true innovation in the sector. Ordermark has raised in excess of $3 million to date and is part of the Techstars Boulder 2018 class. Learn more about Alex and how to get Ordermark at your restaurant at www.ordermark.com.
