SBE Hospitality Group and virtual brand platform C3's founder and CEO Sam Nazarian has acquired Nextbite, just days after Nation's Restaurant News reported that Nextbite's order management arm, Ordermark, had been sold off to Indian software company UrbanPiper. Nextbite and its virtual brands —which includes both original and licensed brands such as Packed Bowls by Wiz Khalifa, Shawarmama, Nestle Toll House Cookies, IHOP, Super Mega Dilla, Thrilled Cheese, Fuku, George Lopez Tacos, and Nathan's Famous — will live on under the ownership of its former competitor as Nextbite by SBE, but will operate separately from C3's own virtual brands, which include Umami Burger, Krispy Rice, and Sam's Crispy Chicken.Leadership will pass from CEO Alex Canter — who founded Nextbite in 2020 after merging the then-flourishing virtual restaurant company with technology platform Ordermark — to Nazarian, and operations will be relocated to C3's headquarters in Miami. According to Food on Demand, a “suite” of former Nextbite executives will stay on board with the company under new ownership.

Alex as an amazing story to tell. His family started the renowned deli, Canter's, in Los Angeles. He went on to start Ordermark, a system that consolidates the online ordering and third party delivery brands into one device and central hub. From there he launched Nextbite, a leader in virtual restaurant brands. In this episode, we discuss his journey, and tap into the various aspects of virtual brands and how to launch them and market them successfully. Transcript 00:00.00 vigorbranding Everyone today I am joineded by my friend Alex Kantor he is the Ceo and cout co-founder of Nextbyte which where you are going to tap into a bunch until then Alex say hello give a little bit of backstory. 00:10.27 Alex Canter Hey, thanks so much for having me and yeah as mentioned my name is Alex Cantor Ceo and co-founder of nextitee and also fourth generation of cantors delhi in Los Angeles which is one of the largest and oldest restaurants in l la. Started by my great grandfatherfa ninety years ago and just like my father and my grandfather I grew up working in the family business waiting tables at 12 years old working my way up through all the different positions and eventually became in charge of all things new bringing in new technology and proving to my family that. Change can be a good thing I heard a lot growing up if it's not broken. Don't fix it but also really enjoyed running around to all these restaurant conferences and signing up for whatever was available really trying to expand the the cantors brand outside of the 4 walls of the restaurant. Reaching customers everywhere wherever they were and experimented a lot with delivery enjoyed enjoyed the ah the benefit of being on all these great revenue streams from uberries to doorda. Ah all these these apps eventually grew delivery for cantors to be over 30% of our revenue which was. Couple million dollars a year just in just in delivery orders and yep, just a little bit and and the staff in the restaurant hated me because I was the one who brought in all this new technology. We had 9 tablets, 2 laptops and a fax machine to manage all of those incoming orders. 01:28.12 vigorbranding Just a little bit. 01:44.15 Alex Canter Um, so we ah you know we had ah a bit of an operational nightmare to solve and that's what prompted me to eventually start a tech company to help restaurants usher them into the new digital age to help them reach these customers outside of their 4 walls through this new manageable software and solution that we built. Sort of partnering with thousands of restaurants and have really evolved the business now to expand our product offerings into into virtual restaurants and all this other crazy stuff which we can get into it a bit but that's the backstone. 02:13.44 vigorbranding Yeah I Love that? Yeah, So you know what I love most about that is I think it really is the pathway of the American dream. Its immigrant family sees the opportunity onces a bite of that pun intended of that American dream and then through the generation's hard work passing down. Um, and I think that's one of the reasons why I love this Industry. So Absolutely much is your story isn't the only one and I think it's It's such a wonderful path to get ahead. Um, so before we hop fully in let's sort out some misconceptions from the proverbial Horse's Mouth. What are the differences between virtual restaurants Ghost Kitchens and dark Kitchens because we hear them tossed around. 02:58.73 Alex Canter Yes, so these are ah these are new terms to describe restaurants that have no physical storefronts traditionally um, it really started with um with ghost kitchens which are basically warehouses for delivery only restaurants. This is more like in the actual infrastructure like a we work for kitchens in a way where these these large real estate c

Wouldn't it be nice to use those resources for some extra cash flow? Paul Allen started Nextbite to fill the gap. He's created online brands that are made in local kitchens, using ingredients and kitchen space that restaurants already have. Consumers get delicious food orders to their doorstep, and restaurants fill empty hours with more revenue. It's a win-win situation for the restaurant industry. In this episode of the SpotOn Series, Chad Franzen is joined by Paul Allen, President and Co-founder of Nextbite, to discuss how he is helping local restaurant owners with a new virtual restaurant. Paul talks about why he's passionate about keeping local restaurants alive, how his other company, Ordermark, helps businesses with online ordering and delivery, and the process of partnering with Nextbite.

Many things shifted in the restaurant industry during the pandemic. A lot of restaurants were forced to change and change quickly to keep up with ever-evolving regulations. Many restaurants transitioned to online, pick-up, and delivery models, which will most likely stick around. On this episode of The Main Course, Host Barbara Castiglia talked with Alex Canter, CEO of Ordermark, which helps restaurants increase efficiency and grow profits by aggregating mobile orders across all of the major online-ordering services into a single dashboard and printer. The duo talked about what's next for the restaurant industry post-pandemic, technology in restaurants, and Ordermark/Nextbite.“This last year has been absolutely devastating for our industry,” Canter said. “We've seen over 100,000 restaurants permanently shut their doors, which is really just a difficult number to digest.”For the restaurants that made it through to the other side, it is a much different world. General managers, owners, chefs, and front-of-house must now rely more heavily on digital tools in the restaurant. The shift was expected to happen over the next ten years, but COVID-19 accelerated that shift in just a few short months.“Pretty much every restaurant from fine dining to fast-casual to QSR has figured out a digital strategy, a delivery strategy, and has had to get really creative to make it to this point,” Canter said. “I'm really impressed with the way restaurants have adapted. It's always been who we are as restaurant owners, people who are resilient.”

Virtual brands are all the rage right now. But how do they work? And how can they succeed with so many of them out there? This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast “A Deeper Dive” focuses on this topic and features Alex Canter, the founder of Ordermark, who provides advice and insight into the creation of these concepts. Canter's company includes Nextbite, a creator and operator of virtual concepts—which operate for a primarily delivery customer out of leased kitchens at places like restaurants or hotels or ghost kitchens. Nextbite's brands include Grilled Cheese Society and Hotbox by Wiz Khalifa. Canter talks about what differentiates successful virtual brands and how to best succeed at creating them. He also talks about his own history in the restaurant business.

Today we talk about moving away from your main brand to survive through these times of COVID and beyond. Flexibility is so important during these times.  Some of the areas we will cover to begin the conversation of bridging the gap between restaurants and hotels are food lockers, virtual kitchens and ghost kitchens.  These are all items that a hotel may not have thought about and maybe might also give some thought to a restaurant that might have a connection with a hotel to dig into the concept of utilizing their kitchens. Remember, the success behind any brand that is trying to launch a ghost or virtual kitchen is the proximity and the radius of their kitchen to their ideal target group. More than likely, hotels fit that criteria, therefore, are a perfect criteria for this type of concept. Today is unusual due to the fact I am being interviewed instead of me interviewing somebody else. This was recorded for the Hotel Next conference that went live in the early part of December. I just receive permission to release this to all of you so I wanted to share it because there is good use case scenarios on both sides of the business. Alex Canter was born with a stainless steel spoon in his mouth, and on that spoon was a really excellent matzoh ball. Alex is among the fourth generation of Canter family members who learned about business early by working at the 87-old deli institution in Los Angeles. Canter's Deli is a Jewish-style restaurant that has been open 24 hours a day for the last 87 years. There is no lock on the door. When Alex began working at the restaurant, he saw that online ordering and food delivery were becoming a major part of the future opportunity for the business. Walk-in customers were down, and Alex wanted Canter's to triumph in this new age. He signed up for nine ordering services and saw the impact of the new revenue stream. He also saw the perils, with separate, non-integrated tablets behind the counter for Seamless, Grubhub, Uber Eats, and more. Orders were being lost, customers were having to wait when they arrived to pick up their food, the staff was confused. In this chaos, Alex Canter saw an opportunity to bring the more than 175 online ordering companies into a single point of sale system that could communicate with the front of house and back of house and fulfill the customer promise of hot food served seamlessly. Ordermark was born, allowing Canter's and thousands of other restaurant partners to manage all online ordering partner companies from a single device. In this episode of the Real Leader's podcast with Sue Heilbronner, hear Alex's story of growing up in an old-school restaurant family and bringing his gifts of vision and technical acumen to the table to create true innovation in the sector. Ordermark has raised in excess of $3 million to date and is part of the Techstars Boulder 2018 class. Learn more about Alex and how to get Ordermark at your restaurant at www.ordermark.com.
