On today's episode, Dennis sits down with retired New Jersey police officer, Mike Arena. Officer Arena was involved in an OIS on August 6, 2020 after responding to a call concerning a man behaving erratically holding a broken glass bottle. When the responding officers encountered the man, later identified as Amir Johnson, he was walking in and out of a marshy area along the roadway while holding a broken glass bottle in his hand. Mr. Johnson had self-inflicted lacerations on his arms and neck, and was bleeding from his neck. The officers engaged with Mr. Johnson and offered him assistance, but he refused their efforts and failed to comply with their commands, including repeated requests for him to drop the bottle. Instead, he continued to walk back and forth on the roadway, where officers had stopped traffic for safety reasons. Officers continued to speak with Mr. Johnson, who was threatening to inflict additional self-harm, for several minutes. One officer was armed with a taser and attempted to deploy it, however, this was unsuccessful. At approximately 4:30 p.m., Mr. Johnson was in close proximity to a vehicle occupied by civilians when he rapidly advanced at officers with the broken bottle in his hand. Three officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding him. He was rushed by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City Campus, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:00 p.m. A state grand jury has voted not to file any criminal charges at the conclusion of its deliberations regarding the death of Amir Johnson, 30, of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Today Officer Arena discuss the story and what unfolded that day, how it changed his life and how he has moved on from the career of law enforcement. IGSTS Episode #16I got somethang ta say That justice is a blind goddessIs a thing to which we poor are wiseHer bandage hides two festering soresThat once, perhaps, were eyesThe Great Langston HughesDaunte Wright's murder. Was it a careless mistake or something more sinister? SAF Moe ur Prison Lawyer and Ron B in the Middle discuss the facts from their perspectives. Moreover, the hosts of I got somethang ta say, try to make sense of a verdict, that makes no sense. Under the current system of law enforcement, if a police officer is in the process of apprehending an individual for some alleged offense, that person has no right to resist. Even if the officer is in the wrong. That individual cannot use deadly force against the aggressor, however, it can and will be used against that individual. As most Americans are not overt victims of overseeing and control, a problem only faced by the most downtrodden, critical subjects such as the Potter verdict, over-policing, and hyper-minority incarceration may seem overly sensationalized, notwithstanding, as for African Americans who deal with it on a day-to-day basis, it is only the system reaffirming its grasp around their proverbial throats. The subject of unarmed men and women of color being murdered is a very sensitive topic; moreover, faced with the fact that law enforcement has been used as a tool to remove all human dignity from certain persons for the purpose of control, this conversation must be had, this space must be free and open until no person is killed simply for being unapologetically different in America!Justin Terrell (Executive Director) Minnesota Justice Research Center is our special guest and speaks truth to power. Mr. Terrell is a lifelong advocate for justice and he discusses politics in Minnesota and felons' disenfranchisement in the political process.Note:In Tennessee v. Garner (1985), thus. Supreme Court reframed such actions by police to fall under the Fourth Amendment. The Court commented that "Whenever an officer restrains the freedom of a person to walk away, he has seized that person . . . there can be no question that application of deadly force is a seizure subject to the reasonableness requirement of the Fourth Amendment." This case essentially abolished the over-broad use of the "fleeing felon" doctrine by striking down the use of "all necessary means" to apprehend fleeing suspects. Johnson went straight from high school to the league and was engulfed into a fully veteran Pistons team. Amir's NBA career began in 2005 before tattoos gained real popularity in the league. Johnson recalls guys having ink but not much. Johnson started with his “family tats” that were considered a tradition among other Westchester high school basketball players, to then seeing inspiration from pop culture and comics. Amir has an entire collection of superhero tattoos and is all for pop culture translating to ink. He believes he's one of the first to showcase his pop culture influences through his ink. Next they take a look at Serge Ibaka (10th) and Fred VanVleet (13th) and try to sort out whether one, both, or neither should be ahead of Antonio Davis (11th) and Amir Johnson (12th). Lastly, they discuss Pascal Siakam (6th), the degree to which his post-season struggles this year should have affected his standing, and the likelihood of him passing the guys in front of him in the 5th through 2nd range: Chris Bosh, DeMar DeRozan, Vince Carter and Kawhi Leonard. Of course, Kyle Lowry is the undisputed number one, but you knew that.Read the piece here: https://www.raptorshq.com/2020/11/4/21545254/ranking-every-raptor-version-3-0-run-it-back-toronto-raptors-lowrySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. In Episode 736, Sean and Katie continue their Retiring Every Raptor series of episodes and decide which players in Raptors history to wear the numbers 11 through 25 are the most worthy of having their jerseys retired. This time they start out by discussing T.J. Ford's underrated career as the best #11 to play in Toronto, before sifting through some decidedly underwhelming names for numbers 12 through 14 -- sorry Joey Graham. Then it's the big one: #15 -- Vince Carter, Amir Johnson, Jorge Garbajosa and podcast favourite Greg Monroe all have a case, but who will come out on top? They close things off with discussions of a trio of sharpshooters who wore #16, give Fred VanVleet an easy win in the #23 category, and much more. There are also some admittedly suspicious-looking coin flip results. The Celtics were overmatched by a superior Thunder squad as they lost 130-109 Wednesday night. WEEI's Sam Packard joined CLNS Radio's Jared Weiss on the Garden Report for a breakdown of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook dismantling of the Celtics.   BOSTON – I feel like I'm moving faster than we thought. Those were the words of Jae Crowder before the Celtics hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder for an ESPN Wednesday night marquee.  After a rude awakening to their place in the NBA several shelves below top, the Celtics will hold on to those words for dear life. Faster may not be fast enough. Brad Stevens has tried throwing Marcus Smart at a pair of hall of fame 6'10" swingmen two nights in a row and it has proven to be insufficient.  The Celtics had three steals against the Thunder and lost the fastbreak points race 14-4. Even the JV squad couldn't get a fastbreak score during the entire fourth quarter. Smart and Crowder's defensive presence above the break is what forces teams into making mistakes, which is the Celtics' bread and butter. Without either of them playing the trap game, the Celtics defense relied on its switching and interior presence. But those are two tasks at which it overachieves because of Crowder's motor and footwork. So they watched as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook buried shot after shot, combining for 52 points in 56 minuted. Isaiah Thomas' 29 points epitomized the typical valiant effort he is known for, but it wasn't nearly enough. “They punked us. We played soft as tissue,” Thomas said.. “That third quarter, they took advantage of every little thing they could have. With a good team like that, you can't have that happen. So, whoever is playing, whether Jae's out, Kelly's back, they punked us. That was basically what it was. They were the tougher team, no question.” Although the Celtics held their own in the rebounding column for most of the night, the Thunder's physical dominance was woefully apparent. Enes Kanter and Stevens Adams moved mountains while Durant and Westbrook took a cleaver to the Celtics' zone defense. Amir Johnson held up well against a flurry of bodies, contributing to Serge Ibaka's mediocre night in the post while keeping the Celtics alive on offense with five offensive rebounds. While the Celtics dealt with horrific timing, getting the two toughest matchups in the league for an undersized defender at the three – outside of LeBron James – the absence of their identity with Crowder going down is a red flag a month before the playoffs. There is plenty of time to recover from what should be an anomaly for a Stevens team, but the vulnerabilities that have always been under the surface are bubbling to the sky. BOSTON – Brook Lopez made the Celtics feel the pain of not having a powerful low post defender, as he led the Brooklyn Nets to a 100-97 win. The Celtics came roaring back to open the fourth quarter, going on a 12-2 run to tie the game. But with Stevens using an ubersmall lineup with Jonas Jerebko and Jae Crowder as the bigs against Brook Lopez, the game slowed down and the Nets chipped away. Lopez was phenomenal, scoring a season-high 30 points with 13 rebounds. The Celtics double-teamed him throughout the second half, with his kick out passes invariably resulting in good looks for his teammates. With Stevens experimenting with different defensive schemes after Avery Bradley went down for the day with a hamstring injury, the Celtics never found a strategy that worked for more than a few minutes. But there was a sudden spark, as Amir Johnson checked in and Isaiah Thomas, of all people, took over defensively. Marcus Smart got back to his role as defensive catalyst in the fourth quarter and suddenly the Celtics were running laps past Brooklyn. Isaiah Thomas was pick pocketing ball handlers being trapped by Jae Crowder. But the Nets were eventually able to break the Celtics' full court press. With 26 seconds left and the Celtics down three, the Nets swung the ball around until Brook Lopez was open under the hoop. As he threw it down, the Celtics chances began to fade. After a circus of Marcus Smart steals and saves to give the Celtics one last chance to tie it, Jonas Jerebko short armed a wide open corner three with two seconds left. Marcus Smart flung the save to Jae Crowder 30-feet out, who couldn't get a shot off in time. The Celtics head down to Brooklyn for a Monday grudge match to attempt to tie up the season series.

Although Jae Crowder was having a strong game through three quarters, coach Brad Stevens elected to stick with a front court featuring Evan Turner, Lee and Jared Sullinger for most of the fourth quarter. It blew open a stagnating game with a 12-6 run in the first 7:16, featuring an ironic blend of high pressure transition offense and incisive drive and kick passing. As the Celtics went back to their starting lineup, while flexing in Crowder as a stretch four, they continued to keep the pace high and execute on offense. After Jared Sullinger hit a 20-foot pick and pop jumper with a minute left that had him pointing to the rafters for 20 seconds straight, Fred Hoiberg called timeout.  The Bulls came back out on fire, with Jimmy Butler scoring 5 unanswered points to cut the lead to four and foul Amir Johnson out of the game.  Time ran out for the Bulls, as the Celtics won out through the free throw game. FOR FULL VIDEO VERSIONS OF THESE AUDIO PLAYER/COACH INTERVIEWS, CLICK HERE Isaiah Thomas and Kelly Olynyk come alive as Boston Celtics beat Atlanta Hawks 106-93 Written by  Jared Weiss   Kelly Olynyk came alive as an aggressive offensive threat as the Boston Celtics beat the Atlanta Hawks 106-93 Friday. Isaiah Thomas dominated with a 23 point, 10 assist and 5 rebound tour de force. BOSTON – Pace and space was on display at its finest in the second half, as the Celtics went on a series of blistering runs in the second half to beat the Atlanta Hawks 106-93. Isaiah Thomas' 23 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds were crucial for a team whose shooting continued to cripple the pace-and-space system. The Celtics were neck and neck with the Hawks until an Isaiah Thomas three-pointer in the middle of the third quarter sparked a 12-2 run. Kelly Olynyk came alive with 8 points in the quarter with two threes. He took over when he rattled home a sudden catch-and-shoot three and attacking the rim. Isaiah Thomas kicked off the second half with a flurry of acreobatic drives and deep shots, finishing with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting in the third. Amir Johnson capped off the quarter with a put back at the buzzer and when the dust settled, the Celtics held their first double-digit lead of the game and led 80-69. But then Kyle Korver returned. The sharp shooter opened back up the attacking lanes for Atlanta and they chipped away at the Celtics' lead. After a timeout with three minutes to go, the Hawks found Kent Bazemore in the corner with Kyle Korver up on the strong-side elbow. With Korver's radiating presence keeping his man out on the perimeter, Bazemore exploded past two Boston defenders for a high-flying layup. Stevens responded with a timeout and a tricky ATO play of his own. Jae Crowder got the ball on the top of the key and faked a pick-and-roll left with Amir Johnson. As Crowder drove like a charging Buffalo into a triple team, he quickly turned and found a trailing Amir Johnson. With all three post defenders in the air, Johnson slipped by for the layup. The Celtics got the stop on the other end and came charging down on the break, where Evan Turner drew a three-point play. After a Jae Crowder three restored the 11-point lead from the beginning of the quarter, they never looked back. Crowder hit a step-in 18-footer to ice the game on the very next play. The 10-0 run saw the Celtics executing their pace-and-space system to perfection, as they eclipsed 100 field goal attempts for the evening. The Hawks were without coach Mike Budenholzer due to a family matter and played like a team missing their coach. Their usually slick and efficient offense looked lost in the third quarter, saved by a few great shots from Dennis Schroder and some savvy off-ball moves by Thabo Sefolosha. With the Celtics' starters getting into transition off of every defensive rebound, their higher pace eventually prevailed. The Celtics took a season-high 102 field goal attempts to the Hawks' 75.

That is our Reacht Question of the Week   Sean Deveney of Sporting News will be back to discuss all that transpired and what lies ahead for the Celtics.  Attention now turns to the trade market to fill out the roster of the roster.  What are potential targets for the Celtics and what does Sean think of the Celts off-season thus far?   Not a bad week to go Around the NBA in 5 either.  Tune into this week's edition of Celtics Beat being presented by lynda.com/clns,  audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Dr. Ron's Ultra Pure, Casper, and American Farmer's Network.  Available for download on iTunes and Stitcher Sunday, July 5, 2015.  Powered by CLNS Radio.
