Dallas Travers had a GREAT freakin' idea for a VERY large initiative she wanted to put into the world… It was an e-magazine that a bit of a 'disruptor' in the online space, with 3 main goals: 1. Offer coaches alternatives to outdated approaches 2. Provide space for underrepresented voices to be heard 3. Raise money to donate funds to a meaningful cause When I got my eyes on it, the first thing I thought while it was, "DAMN. This is a fantastic piece of content." The second thing I thought was, "DAMN. This must've been an enormous amount of work to pull off." So I reached out to Dallas to see if she'd talk about the REALITY behind what it took to actually getting that big, exciting, impactful, amazing piece of content into the world… When she said yes, I was thrilled! You probably already know Dallas Travers: she's the host of Coaches on a Mission podcast AND is a well-known & highly respected coach of coaches. Dallas takes us behind the scenes to reveal what it's really like to develop such a big vision and bring her online magazine - called What To Do Instead (WTDI) - to life. The What To Do Instead project created challenges & forced Dallas (and her team) to evolve their priorities, put Dallas' strategic gifts into overdrive, and play with new tactics & approaches so they could hit their goals. In true Dallas form, she generously shares the lessons learned & gives advice that'll help you bring your own ideas to fruition… While honoring 'the dignity of your own process' - one of my personal favorite Dallas-isms. Listen in for inspiration, motivation, and a dose of reality - always a great trifecta. *Download the What To Do Instead e-mag here: https://dallastravers.lpages.co/wtdi/ *For every new subscriber, Dallas' business donates $1 to The Afiya Center, a Reproductive Justice organization committed to serving Black womxn and girls. On this episode I'm joined by PGA Professional & Director of Golf at Alpine Country Club John Mascari, 2019 Champions Tour Player of the Year Scott McCarron, 2-time winner on Tour and now Top Instructor Rick Fehr, plus 2008 Minnesota Teacher of the Year and 2022/2023 Top Instructor in South Dakota Todd Kolb. John Mascari weighs in on the state of professional golf and where he thinks it'll be 5-10 years down the road. We hear the best pieces of advice he's been given in his business and golf careers and if the golf ball rollback is much to do about nothing. Scott McCarron shares his thoughts on golf becoming more of a worldwide game and if Rory was right in saying we could see a Premier League like structure. He also shared his thoughts on what it will be like when Tiger comes to play out on the Champions Tour, and we looked back on his first PGA Tour victory and how Johnny Miller's comments on the practice range fueled him to turn a 1 shot lead over Tom Watson into a 5 stroke victory. We finish off hearing about a great property he recently bought down in the Bahamas in Jack's Bay Club which features courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Rick Fehr won twice out on the PGA Tour. He is also one of the most decorated amateur players in the last 40 years. He helped BYU win a national championship and he was low Amateur in the 1984 Masters and US Open. Rick teaches in the Seattle area. We focused our conversation on the mental side of the game. We talked about how to get into a flow state or "the zone". He shared tips for how to figure out which tips on the internet are good and which ones may be leading us down the wrong path. Rick was annually one of the best putters on Tour and provided some drills to help us make more putts. Todd Kolb rounds out the show. He's one of the Top Instructors in the north-central part of the country. He has written a wonderful book titled, The Bad Lie, Why Traditional Golf Instruction is Failing You and What To Do Instead. We delve into why that's the case and what his Vertical Line Swing System is. We get tips for how to hit a high, soft flop shot, how to gain more distance off the tee for those of us north of 50, and how to get your hips to turn versus sway in your downswing.
Kristen Ulmer is a thought leader, master facilitator and fear/anxiety expert. Her education comes from practical, real- world experience, starting with being a mogul specialist on the US Ski Team. Kristen then became more notoriously recognized as the best female big mountain extreme skier in the world, a status she kept for 12 years. Known for big cliff jumps and you-fall-you die descents, she became sponsored by the likes of Red Bull, Ralph Lauren, and Nikon, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame September of 2019. Her mastery of other danger sports such as paragliding, ice and rock climbing, and adventure mountain biking also gained her the outdoor industry vote as most extreme “fearless” woman athlete in North America. After retiring in 2003, she spent the next 15 years studying Zen Buddhism. Her current work as a facilitator and teacher is the culmination of her decades-long experiences becoming intimate with fear. In this episode, Kristen and I explore: -Kristen's view that fear underlies other emotions such as anxiety, anger, sadness, and excitement. -Kristen's own unhealthy relationship to fear, and when extreme behaviors turn into unhealthy addictions. -How to be "intimate" with fear versus trying to conquer it or understand it intellectually. -Seeing fear as "person" who needs to be accepted and validated (versus controlled). -Re-imagining anxiety, PTSD, and mental health through Kristen's paradigm of understanding fear. -How fear gets conditioned in childhood. -How meditation and spirituality can inadvertently interfere with feeling fear. -Non-resistance and "being in love" with our emotions. -How our culture reinforces resistance and distraction from our emotions. -How Kristen's model compares and contrasts with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). -Noticing your resistance patterns as the first step to being "intimate" with fear. -The four levels of working with fear. -Getting into "flow" with fear. In today's episode, I'm sharing what the advice to “show, don't tell” really means (and spoiler alert: it's probably not what you think!). We'll also talk about how to reveal your character's emotions on the page, too. Here's a preview of what's included: [01:20] In general, the advice to “show, don't tell” means that a writer should relate information to readers through sensory details and actions rather than exposition.[03:39] But there's more to it than that. To me, “show, don't tell,” means that you need to show your character's emotional reaction to what's happening in a scene—and there are three main ways to do this.[03:56] Method #1: You can tell readers what your character is feeling.[04:35] Method #2: You can show emotions via body language or physical tells.[06:14] Method #3: You can show readers what your character is thinking in response to what's happening in a scene.[12:15] Final thoughts and episode recap.Rate + Review + Follow on Apple Podcasts"I love the Fiction Writing Made Easy podcast!" ← If that sounds like you, please consider rating and reviewing this show! "Is there a specific strategy for using a book and a podcast together?" What a fun topic! In today's episode, I'm sitting down with returning guest, Amy Connell, to talk about her recent experience of publishing her book and the role her podcast played in the process. Amy's sharing how she used her podcast network to help find endorsements for her new book, "Your Worthy Body". We're also talking about how her previous experience blogging contributed to both her podcast and book writing journey. "...there's something about the spoken word that can help connect you in a deeper way. You get the tone of the voice...the inflections. They get it when you are saying something really angrily or really softly. And that's a lot harder to do in the written word..." Amy's perspective on using both creative mediums together is worth a listen! This episode is for podcasters of all stages, but definitely for those of you that have the dream to one publish a book!"Why Growing Your Email List Feels So Dang Hard and What To Do Instead", hosted by Amy Porterfield. 7 Simple Solutions To Attract New Email Subscribers At Lightning Speed* Reserve your seat here: KrystalProffitt.com/emailBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! A woman emailed me to say she was struggling: "I'm having a hard time letting go of adhering to a program or following some sort of rule; I use dieting as a security blanket." I have never heard dieting explained this way and I thought it was absolutely something we needed to explore! Why is dieting so hard to let go of? Because it can be safe, familiar and our security blanket. We default back into it even when we know it doesn't serve us. Or we'll convince ourselves that we will do it "for a just a bit, until we lose the weight". Listen in to today's podcast to hear more on dieting as a security blanket (and how to let go of it!) We'll explore reasons why we default and explore how to move out of it. PS--I have a 5 day self-paced challenge on "How to Not Get Stuck in Diet Mentality and What To Do Instead" here if you need more support.

We all feel fear, but what do you do when it comes over you? For many the answer is to let it drive your actions and how you approach your life. But what if you could feel the fear, understand its place in your life, and still make strides towards your goals? You can! There are two books that have been instrumental in how I talk about and think about fear. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What To Do Instead by Kristen Ulmer. In both, the authors share ways to approach fear without losing your drive or passion. In Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert writes a letter to fear. She lets fear know that he can come along on the ride with creativity, but that he’s there as an observer only. He doesn’t get to talk, share an opinion, mess with the music, and most importantly, he’s not allowed to drive. Isn’t it amazing to think about talking to your fears in this way? Acknowledge that they exist but then remind them who is boss and what their role is in your life? I think that is so empowering and it’s helped me to rethink the role of fear in my life and my business. Listen as I share my insights about The Art of Fear as well and why I use both of these books with my own coaching clients. I’m also sharing my tips on approaching fear with a healthy respect and perspective. “So many times in my own life, fear was the driver.” Dr. Errin Weisman In this episode: [01:20] We are talking about fear today. As a podcaster, it is important to know how to grow my audience. We had Matt Wolfe of Hustle and Flowchart share his insights on this topic. Hustle and Flowchart is one of the leading podcasts about growing businesses. In this episode, Matt shares his top three strategies on growing your audience. He also shared more effective methods of monetizing their show. Matt Wolfe’s Start in Podcasting (2:16) Matt was a big fan of audio as a student, and his first major was in audio production. He soon realized that audio content is easy to create, and an easy way to create quality content was to interview interesting people. Matt started his first podcast in 2010 with Joe Fier, who is still co-hosting with him in Hustle and Flowchart.Podcasting’s Leverage and Compound Interest (4:17) Podcasting has good leverage and pays with compound interest. You could turn it into different forms of media and post it into different platforms. You also continue earning from podcasts that you’ve created from long ago. Audiences have different preferences in media. Some prefer short podcasts. Some may like it long. There are even others who prefer just the notes from the show People would listen to older podcasts despite you having new content available. They also occasionally binge your podcast just like they do for TV shows. On Having a Co-host (9:07) Having a co-host is like having two brains focused on the same goal. Matt and Joe play different roles in their podcast, and these roles balance each other out and make better quality content. Creative differences are typical. What keeps the show together is the hosts’ mutual understanding of the vision of their show.Determining Who to Have as Guests (12:07) They have a customer support representative who background checks the twelve emails they receive each day requesting to appear as guests on their show. From these cold emails, only about two to three guests appear in their show. Most cold emails get rejected because they are not a good fit for the show. Most of their guests come from their own network. Matt and Joe keep a Dream 100 List of people they want to have in their show. They attach this to their emails, hoping their recipient could introduce them to anyone he or she would know in that list. They try to keep the show’s topics varied. Since there’s only space for eight guests in a month, they try to put apart guests who specialize in the same things. To Go Broad or Be Niche (16:06) Matt and Joe are described to be “unapologetically generalists.” They cover diverse topics and never really had a specific niche. Going for a more general audience has more significant potential, but is also harder to start. On the other hand, going niche makes it easy to create a base, but ultimately has a narrow market. Starting the Hustle and Flowchart podcast was easy despite going broad because they made use of their existing following and promoted the new podcast in all their channels.Growing the Show and Maintaining Your Audience (20:27) Matt and Joe would try everything they’d hear that helps grow a show. There are three most effective ways to grow your podcast. The first strategy is to have more contests and giveaways that involves subscribing to the show and putting up a review. The second tactic is to make Facebook Ads using three-minute clips of their podcast videos, optimized for views with a call-to-action to listen to their full podcasts. The third technique is to get quality guests with strong followings to make use of their already existing social media followings to increase the show’s reach.Usual Strategy That Fails, and What To Do Instead (27:00) Using the name of guests in Google Ads result in bad bids and end up being unprofitable. To get better bids, create your own blog post on a specific topic, and then target questions and search terms related to the blog post. Another way is to ask the lists that do appear organically on Google Search to include you in their lists.Monetisation Strategies (31:59) Their first and most common way is through affiliate marketing. Monetize your newsletters by selling content upgrades to your email list, like notes of your old episodes. CPM deals are heavily in favor of advertisers. Renegotiate the terms into a fixed rate pricing in return of shoutouts, banner placements on your website, and including sponsors in email newsletter as inserts. The Future of Podcasting (39:32) The younger generation may switch from terrestrial radio to podcasts. As podcasts are cheaper to produce than traditional radio, there might be a shift in radio content towards licensing of podcast episodes. Significant movements in Silicon Valley favor podcasting platforms, companies, and services, which is a good indicator of the industry’s future.Learning More From Matt Wolfe (47:18) Their podcast episodes are available in evergreenprofits.com. They also have a Traffic Book sold in print on Amazon, but available for free as an ebook at hustleandflowchart.com/podcasting. Team, when I was in Squaw Valley for the Spartan World Championships, I had the honor of meeting Kristen Ulmer who, for 12 consecutive years, was the world's top female big mountain extreme skiier. (My dream job!) From Wikipedia: Ulmer was on the US Ski Team for moguls in 1991. She also starred in over 20 ski movies, and was called by the ski media the best woman big mountain extreme skier in the world from 1990-2001. In 1997 Ulmer was also voted in a Powder Magazine ski industry survey to be the best overall female skier in the world, beating even Olympic gold medalists. She was known for jumping off up to 70-foot cliffs, throwing flips, and for ski mountaineering feats such as the first female ski decent of Wyoming's Grand Teton in 1997. An avid rock and ice climber, paraglider pilot, adventure cyclist, and kiteboarder, Ulmer was also voted by the outdoor industry in a 2000 Women's Sports and Fitness Magazine poll to be the most extreme woman athlete in North America, beating women in all sports disciplines not just skiing. She retired from professional athletics in 2003. Kristen has since written a book, The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What To Do Instead. So I could not pass up the opportunity to walk with her and ask her to share her story and big mountain wisdom with all of us. On a personal note, I'm really looking forward to staying friends with Kristen. And I'm definitely looking forward to joining her on the slopes! Every Mogul Matters! Now, in today's episode I want to share with you how you can save up to an hour, maybe even up to 2 hours each day by determining how you deal with your phone calls. So, that's been a study that's done that shows, each time that you are interrupted from the task that you are doing, it takes about 15 minutes to get back into that task, if it's not something that is really basic. It requires a bit more of your attention. It requires 15 minutes to go back to your task. In today's episode, I want to share with you as to how you can focus on achieving your results while you are multi-tasking. Now, I know that I have talked about it in the past on how if you really want to focus, you need to stop multi-tasking. And, not only myself, but a lot of experts teach that to help you increase productivity. What they realize though, is that, it works well for those experts. It works well for me, because one of the strengths is actually to really focus, which is why I talk about it and train people on this. But there are people out there, perhaps yourself whose personalities designed so that when they multi-task, they get a sense of accomplishment because they feel like they are doing a lot of things. Interview with Derek Coburn (CadreDC.com) There’s a problem with the business networking events that you’re attending—traditional networking doesn’t work. It’s like trying to use Morse code because you’re unaware that iPhones exist. But here on the show today is Derek Coburn, author of the new book, Networking is Not Working (launching on April 28th) to school us on non-traditional networking methods that are actually effective in growing your client base and building your business. In 1998, Derek graduated college and began his career as a financial adviser and built an extremely successful wealth management business. When the economy took a downturn a few years ago, he had to devote more of his time to his existing clients. He started using non-traditional networking strategies to help his clients and help his business, and when his revenue tripled from his efforts, he knew he was onto something. Afterwards, he and his wife founded Cadre—and un-networking community in Washington DC (and now in Baltimore) that connects over 100 CEOs and business leaders. Now, Derek’s channeled the wildly effective networking strategies that he’s learned from growing two successful companies into his latest book and he’s sharing his “non-networking” secrets in this episode. So before you waste your time handing out another business card, check out what Derek has to say. Cool stuff mentioned in this episode: CadreDC (Derek’s networking community) Networking is Not Working (download the first chapter of Derek’s book) Chris Brogan Did this podcast rock your world?
