Today I want to talk specifically about how to navigate family gatherings. And to help with that, I'm interviewing Amy E. Smith, a life coach and communications specialist who specializes in all things self-worth and confidence. Amy has been on the show before sharing how to enforce a boundary without being a jerk. Her e-workbook is called "Stand Up for Yourself without Being a Dick," so I think you can see right there that she's given this topic some serious thought--let's find out what she's got to share.  I asked Amy: What is it about holiday gatherings with family that can make it such a stress fest?  What can we do well before the event is even here that will help things get off on a better foot?  Once you're there, how do you get out of those fraught conversations with grace?  How do we maintain boundaries in a situation where we're in a room with the people on this earth who know how to push our buttons the most? How can we actually enjoy ourselves at these gatherings, instead of merely endure them?  ** This episode sponsored by (thank you for supporting our sponsors!)**: Air Doctor – Use promo code BETTER to save up to $300 on this UltraHEPA air purifier Learn more about your ad choices. In today's episode, our guest is Amy E. Smith. She is a life coach, communication expert, and hypnotherapist. Her primary focus is on helping people find their voice and speak up for themselves. She is also the owner of The Joy Junkie, where she teaches high achieving women how to speak up for themselves by accessing their confidence and self-worth. Today, she will share what it's like to work with her and a brief discussion about hypnotism.   [7:10] Why should we listen to you? I've been through various experiences in my life that have driven me to do the job that I do today. I believe that people who work in the personal growth field should get a solid education and career. So I have a slew of various certifications and credentials.  [7:46]  I've been working in this space for almost 15 years. There's tenure, life experience, and actual academia behind the work that I do. I feel very strongly about having a scientific basis for personal development.  [9:14] I'm skilled at breaking down substantially bigger ideas or things that seem awkward or nonlinear into very quantifiable bits and measures and making them implementable.   [10:29] When you start talking to people, how do you communicate these complex ideas down at a simplistic basis form? We express abstract concepts using metaphor. In hypnosis, there is a breakdown between the conscious and subconscious faculties of the mind. Without digging too far into the idea of the psyche, there is a slight barrier between conscious and subconscious.  [11:13]  When I describe the vital element of the mind, also known as our "inner critic," it behaves essentially as a guard dog. As a result, it keeps everything in sync with the ingrained things in their subconscious mind.   [13:09] What actions do you have people take once they've kind of put the guard dog asleep? You still have to have radical personal responsibility in what you do day in and day out in your actions. But hypnosis can help make those actions more automatic. [13:56] Our patterns and values are stored in the subconscious mind. Logic, willpower, reason, and logic are all in the conscious component, accounting for just 10% of the total. That is why willpower alone will not get you to the desired destination if you do not innately believe something in your subconscious. Those two things must be in sync.   [16:23] What do you do to get people to take the step to get into the work that you know will improve them? I have only added hypnosis to my bag of tricks over the last two years. I've always been working with the conscious faculty of the mind through coaching. One way that we do that is through repetition and creating things that become a habit.  [17:00] Our examples of hypnosis have been incredibly theatrical and hyperbolic. We haven't seen in a large swath of media or models of hypnosis and the power it can create. Still, if we understand what is happening scientifically, that is so much more reassuring and calming.  [17:33] Many people, when they're praying, they are in a state of hypnosis. Meditation is a state of hypnosis.   [20:31] Can I access the theta wave intentionally while sitting at home? Yes, that's what hypnosis is. That's where I take somebody who's not going to sleep necessarily, and we just get you to that theta wave. Everybody experiences things very differently. Some people have Hypno-amnesia, where once we count them out back into more of an alpha brainwave state, they don't remember, and sometimes, people remember absolutely everything.   [23:02] What does it look like to work with you? I speak, but I don't have a book. I have a proposal that I'm working on. I talk about two significant components. One is the internal piece, which is genuinely believing that you are enough. It's your worthiness and belief that you deserve the things you want in your lifetime. And the other is the external piece where I help you stand your power.  [24:29]  There are many situations in which we are not taught. For example, we are not told how to persuade adult children to leave the house or convince our families that we do not believe in the religion in which we were raised. There are so many things about which we haven't been given words.   [26:30] Why do you only work with women? I used to work with anyone and everyone. I did have a couple of men in my program, and it just completely shifted the dynamic. I was craving more of a sisterhood. [28:26] I'm optimistic about some of the younger generations that seem to be more open. There's so much more awareness around mental health and the access that we have to social media.   [29:50 Why do you think that you are on this planet here? To genuinely help people believe that they matter so that they can start advocating for themselves so that they can start speaking up for themselves. 31:30 I feel so convicted that women need to believe in their worth. They need to take a stand for it and not apologize for their power.   Key Quotes: [9:08-9:11] “I think we need to own our brilliance in a lot of ways.” [21:33-21:45] “You can't be made to do anything that you don't want to do. You can't be made to do anything outside of your own free will and desire for your life.” Learn more about Amy E. Today we're talking about boundaries with my good friend, Amy E. Smith. If you have a history of constantly putting everybody first, giving in, or not speaking up when something is bothersome to you, then you, my love, need to set some boundaries. In this episode, Amy shares her three-step process for boundary setting, shares some thought-provoking lessons like, “You are not responsible for other people's reactions to your boundaries,” and talks about how to stand up for yourself without being a dick.  Amy is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Founder of TheJoyJunkie.com, Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. When you learn how to set boundaries and speak up for yourself you can even ask for a divorce with the utmost grace and kindness. Calmly and assertively. Yes, you have the freedom to choose a different approach. Show Highlights How to speak up for yourself! (2:48) Boundary remorse, plus we're told disproportionately, as women, “Don't rock the boat, sweep it under the rug.” (7:18) Boundaries and speaking up for yourself don't involve an ultimatum. (13:30) If you want to be heard and understood, you have to deliver your request in a way in which people can hear you. (16:40) The biggest boundary anyone can ever set  is to say, “I don't want to be married to you anymore.” (17:40) You are responsible for your intention, not your reception. (18:14) Change your perspective on what equals success: Success is being proud of the woman you were when you delivered the boundary or information. (36:40) Not sure which boundaries you need to set? Create an inventory of the things you constantly complain about. (37:52) If you are afraid about hurting someone's feelings when having hard conversations, then share that fear and express your vulnerability. (41:55) Amy's three-step process to creating boundaries. (43:43) Learn More About Amy: Amy E. Today's Episode Title: The Cure for Not Enoughness: An Interview with Amy Smith   Do You Ever Think You're Not Enough? One of the biggest things that I work on with clients is this: the fear that you’re not good enough. The fear that you’re not good enough is a fear that affects everyone, though it shows up differently for each person (for some of you, “not good enough” expresses itself as going into workaholic overachiever mode; for others it shows up as comparisons; for others it shows up as procrastination and avoidance and not finishing what you start). We all wonder at times if we are enough. This question, however, can turn into a painful filter through which we see the world and result in significant shame and sadness if left unexamined. While it is normal to have some self doubt, notably during the teenage and young adult years, it can become a painful consistent part of our life. Shame is a painful emotion, it whispers to us that “we’re not good enough” and worse yet, tells us we shouldn’t tell anyone about these parts of ourselves.   In today’s episode of Liberate Your People Pleaser I’m going to dig deep and answer some very important questions regarding today’s subject. Why do we feel/ think like we are not enough? How do we overcome this feeling or mindset that we are not Enough? How to actually improve your self-esteem and stop dragging yourself down? Joining me to discuss mental health, as well as, my journey through somatic therapy is my dearest friend, Amy Smith. This isn’t an expert-on-expert episode; instead, it’s two friends talking about a topic from a place of curiosity.  Here’s some background as to why I wanted to bring you this episode: Last week, Mia Hemstad joined me on the podcast (episode 380). She vulnerably shared the story of her suicidal ideation and major depressive disorder. And, I shared a little bit about my journey too. I wanted to share more of my story, so I decided, this week, to bring you a Conversation About Shit That Matters with Unqualified People.  In this episode you’ll hear: My breaking point - what led me to a point of complete anxiety and terror. (7:16) About my FaceTime call to Amy, where I opened up about thoughts of suicide ideation. (7:31) How having a friend there to listen, comforted me. (17:03) Amy’s experience being on the other end of that phone call and how she was able to compartmentalize what was happening. (18:23) My somatic therapy journey and how it helped me work through trauma. (26:24) Some thoughts about being supportive to a friend going through a mental crisis. How often are you apologizing, regardless if you hurt someone or if the situation truly necessitated an “I’m sorry”?  People-pleasing includes a lot of apologizing, and it doesn’t always express what we really mean which, sometimes, isn’t so much I’m sorry as it is I’m so thankful.  I used to say I’m so sorry all the time. I’d apologize for everything—even when it’s not really what I meant. Here’s an example from my own life. When I published my book, The Happier Approach, some of my friends and family hosted book parties in their homes.  One of my dear friends from high school, Renee Mattson who spoke on the podcast about how to avoid passing your anxiety onto your kids (here’s part one and part two), hosted one of these events. She invited me to her house a little early so we could have lunch together.  When I arrived, Renee realized she’d forgotten to think about lunch. As she was running around the kitchen, prepping leftovers, I started to feel bad. She went into all this trouble—hosting an event for me—and now she’s serving me lunch!  My Monger was having a field day with this. As the words “I’m so sorry you had to make me lunch” came out of my mouth, I caught myself and simply said: “Thank you so much for making lunch. I know it wasn’t easy and I really appreciate it.” Renee’s face lit up and she said, “you are so welcome, I’m so glad you came early. I know it’s just leftovers but it gives us a chance to talk and catch up.”  In that moment, I realized that by saying thank you—which is what I truly meant—it allowed me to appreciate Renee, allowed her to feel appreciated, and empowered both of us. Had I apologized instead and said my 3 favorite words, “I am sorry”, then she would have apologized for throwing together leftovers and all the things that we people pleasers apologize for and we would have both left the conversation feeling disempowered.  Today on the show, my guest Amy E. Smith and I are talking about people-pleasing and how saying I’m sorry all the time is just one of the ways that people-pleasing shows up in our lives and how it disempowers us and keeps us disconnected from the people in our lives.  Amy is a certified confidence coach, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Founder of TheJoyJunkie.com, Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-love.  Listen to the full episode to hear: What people-pleasing is and how you can be a strong, high achiever and still be a people pleaser (raising my hand here)  My own story about people-pleasing that took place at the Brene Brown daring Way training I attended and how I handled it (or didn’t handle it) HOW to speak up for yourself and HOW to start building your inner strength around self-loyalty and worthiness.  Amy’s metaphor for self-worth which is gold Learn more about Amy E. I have a special place in my heart for this struggle because it’s both something I dealt with unknowingly for years, and because it silently affects so many people who think this is just how it is.  Working with me this way is an incredibly efficient and effective way to deal with your anxiety in the moment--without waiting for your next appointment. I have been doing this work for over 20 years and Coach in Your Pocket is the most effective and most life-changing work I have ever done. My clients are consistently blown away by how these daily check-ins combined with the monthly face-to-face video meetings create slow, lasting changes that reprogram their High Functioning Anxiety tendencies over time. Over the course of the three-month program, we meet once a month for a face-to-face session via a secure video chat, and then throughout the entire three months, you have access to me anytime you are feeling anxious, having a Monger attack, celebrating a win, or just need to check-in, and I will respond to you during my office hours (Monday through Friday, 9 am - 6 pm EST). It takes a lot energy and resolve to stand up to the demands of an often extroverted culture and do it on a daily basis.
