In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob speaks to Alex Wolf who delves into the adaptation-led approach to strength training, contrasting it with traditional methods. Alex shares his extensive background in strength conditioning and discusses the importance of defining outcomes before selecting training methods. He emphasizes the need for specificity in training and provides examples of how to effectively target adaptations. The discussion also highlights the challenges and misconceptions surrounding traditional strength training practices, advocating for a shift in perspective towards outcome-driven training methodologies. In this conversation, Alex discusses the importance of shifting from traditional exercise advocacy to an outcome-led approach in strength and conditioning. He emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of physiological principles and the importance of clear objectives in training. The discussion also covers the training intention framework, the balance between technical skills and needs analysis, and the necessity of understanding muscle architecture for effective coaching. Main talking points: • Adaptation-led approach focuses on outcomes rather than just exercise • Specificity in training is crucial for effective performance enhancement • Understanding the intended outcome is essential before selecting training methods • Unexplained performance improvements are not sustainable or reliable • Machine-based training can be more effective than traditional barbell exercises in some scenarios • Understanding the physiology behind exercise selection is essential

In this episode of the Movement Logic Podcast, Laurel and Sarah explore why power training deserves a spot in your movement routine—especially as you age. They kick things off by reviewing the different types of strength before introducing the concept of power, breaking down the fact that, yes, there are different types of power too. You'll hear why power is critical for balance, fall prevention, and quick, reactive movements that keep you moving safely and independently in daily life. Laurel and Sarah explain how power tends to decline faster than strength as we get older—and why that matters—along with how the right kind of training can help you maintain and even improve it.They share real-world examples of power in action, clear up common misconceptions, and highlight the key principles that make power training both safe and effective. Plus, they give a sneak peek into their upcoming course designed to make power training approachable, progressive, and even—dare we say—fun.SIGN UP HERE to take a free Bone Density Course class with us LIVE April 26th 8am PT / 11am ETFollow @MovementLogicTutorials on Instagram00:00 Introduction and Banter00:15 Discussion on PTs Calling Themselves Doctors01:17 Observations about the Bench Press from Recent Classes05:05 Upcoming Free Bone Density Class07:08 Series on Physical Capacities for Longevity10:11 Strength vs. Power11:54 Importance of Power Training for Older Adults38:43 Force-Velocity Curve Explained44:58 Types of Power49:08 Applying Strength and Power in Sports and Daily Life57:19 Neuromuscular Adaptations in Strength and Power Training01:02:35 The Stretch Shortening Cycle and Power Training01:08:07 The Importance of Power Training for Longevity01:21:08 Cultural Misconceptions About Power Training01:24:53 Teaser for Our New Course on Power01:27:48 Conclusion: The Importance of Power TrainingRESOURCESEpisode 60: Dismantling Long & Lean Pt. 1Episode 90: Capacities for Longevity Pt. 1: StrengthSys review and MA: Power v Strength for Older AdultsSys Review and MA: Power to Reduce Falls RiskForce Velocity Curve (the banana!)Episode 37: Plyometrics - More Bang for Your BonesLachlan James paper - Not All Strength is Created Equal + Table from NSCA with Each Classification

Walking alone may not be sufficient for achieving optimal fitness and body composition. The nervous system plays a significant role in fitness and should be considered in training. The carnivore diet can be therapeutic in the short term, but long-term sustainability and potential nutrient deficiencies should be considered. Reintroducing a variety of foods is important for gut health and overall well-being. Prebiotic fiber and fermented foods can support a healthy gut microbiome.

For thousands of years, women have been taught to give their power away, to doubt their own authority, and to ensure the comfort of those around them no matter how it impacts them personally. That's why even the most capable, extraordinary women can remain convinced they're "not good leaders", constantly crowdsource their decisions, and put their own needs last for the good of the whole, over and over. It is relatively common knowledge amongst fitness professionals that both muscle mass and strength decline with age. What is often less emphasized is the loss of muscular power at a faster and disproportionate rate, when compared to muscle size and/or strength. Our guest in episode #91 Dr. Joseph Signorile has spent a career researching ways to mitigate loss of power in the aging adult population, at his research lab at the University of Miami. His findings are very encouraging, suggesting that aging adults can improve their power output, and thereby functional capacity, as they age. In this episode Dr. Signorile reminds us muscular power is “the rate at which one can produce strength.” The greater the rate (or speed) of strength production, the greater the power. As we'll discuss in this episode, having adequate power is associated with a whole host of functional abilities that decline with age such as gait, standing up from a chair, or preventing a fall. In this practical discussion, Dr. Signorile outlines the findings of over three decades of research on how to effectively improve power output in aging adults. We will cover important fundamentals of safe and effective exercise prescription for the aging adult; such as proper progression/periodization, appropriate loading, and the different modalities that can be used for training power. America will have more people over the age of 65, than under the age of 18, by 2035. Given that, this is clearly an important area for fitness professionals to become educated on.Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/91 Our Guest: Dr. Joseph Signorile Dr. Signorile is a Professor at the University of Miami Department of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences. He has conducted research on optimal programming of resistance training in older individuals and persons with Parkinson's disease for over 25 years. He has over 125 refereed manuscripts and 400 national and international scientific presentations. He has been a pioneer in applying the diagnosis/ prescription model to tailor exercise for functional improvement and health in older persons, and continues to work on new technologies and training strategies for improving independence and reducing fall probability. Within the past five years, he has evolved a significant portion of his work toward applying exercise to reduce age-related cognitive decline and in developing periodization models to maximize benefits. He has chaired over 30 doctoral dissertations and been a committee member on countless others. Although he is a prolific researcher and dedicated teacher, his great avocation is bridging the gap between science and practical application as evidenced by his definitive book on aging exercise prescription entitled Bending the Aging Curve which has been translated into Cantonese, Korean and Italian.Follow us on social at the links below: https://www.facebook.com/wellnessparadox https://www.instagram.com/wellnessparadox/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/wellness-paradox-podcast https://twitter.com/WellnessParadox
All Things Speed & Strength | Podcast by Lucas Quinn and Jared Wilson
Episode 9 features Bill Miller, who brings a very unique but practical approach to training for rotational athletes, particularly baseball players. He is based out of the Chicago area, and we are excited to bring you some great insights into what he does on a day-to-day basis for his athletes! We discussed several aspects of his training philosophy and how that manifests into programming for the rotational athlete and training for improving throwing velocity and hitting power. He touches on his 2022 journey of attempting to get 1,000 timed sprints and what he learned from doing that; we primarily discussed how he uses force-velocity profiling to determine areas of deficiency to drive loading and exercise selection, utilizing different modalities to train for power (including Medicine Balls, the Proteus, and Strength Training). We also got into how he uses a crane scale to measure strength in more unique positions, and how he can use that for performance testing as well as readiness for a pitcher and monitoring fatigue in specific positions. We also discussed "core" training, and what that means to Bill, and how he approaches training the trunk to accelerate and decelerate and how that relates to throwing and hitting performance. If you don't already, follow Bill on Instagram (@billmillertraining) and make sure to check out some of his online resources, including his two books on Amazon (Swing Fast & Throw Fast). They share workout examples and best practices as well as the science based insights that combat each of these exercise myths. The myths touched on in this week's episode include: Stretching before working out is essential, treadmill and outdoor running deliver the same results, you shouldn't work out hard during pregnancy, power training requires many repetitions and soreness means results. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes The problem with aging isn't just the preservation of muscle, it's the preservation of muscle, power, and strength – you want to stand up, catch yourself from a fall, pick things up from the floor, etc.Distinguishing strength and hypertrophy: Strength relates to mechanics, the force capability of muscle, and firing the right muscle group in the right sequenceHypertrophy is simply the size of the muscle (without consideration for function or strength) – hypertrophy training optimizes for muscle size, not muscle strength“Protein ingestion alone is anabolic – it will help you grow muscle, independent of even moving.” – Dr. Andy GalpinIf you ingest protein + carbohydrates (fuel) + exercise, the benefits stack to maximize muscle growthIt's important to understand your goal! You can put together a training program for any adaptation you want and avoid the ones you don't want“Volume is the primary driver in hypertrophy; intensity is the primary driver in speed, power, and strength.” – Dr. Andy GalpinNon-negotiables for any training program to work:(1) adherence, (2) progressive overload, (3) individualization, (4) choosing the appropriate targetIn general, a good rep cadence for strength training is 311 and a good cadence for hypertrophy is 312 (or you could even keep it 311 and manipulate other variables – it's just a method choice)General exercise breathing protocol: maintain a breath hold during the lowering/eccentric most dangerous part of the movement & exhale on the concentric portionThe main difference between a power or strength workout is the load – moderate load is power-based adaptation at high intent (moving fast; 30-70% 1RM); strength training is 70% 1RM or higherRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode 2 of a 6-part special series, Dr Andy Galpin, PhD, professor of kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton and world expert on exercise science, explains optimal protocols for increasing strength and causing hypertrophy (muscle growth), as well as for increasing speed and power. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem "Stress is your brain and body preparing you to do something effortful." Dr. Alex Auerbach “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition, a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode welcomes back coaches Cal Dietz, Dan Fichter and Chris Korfist in a truly epic multi-guest podcast. The amount of coaching and learning experienced between Cal, Dan and Chris is staggering, and they have been influencing the training practices of other coaches since the early 2000's. Speed training is always a fun topic, with a lot of resonance to many coaches, because it is the intersection of strength and function. Training speed requires an understanding of both force and biomechanics. It requires knowing ideas on both cueing, and athlete psychology. Since acquiring better maximal velocity is hard, it forces us to level up on multiple levels of our coaching, and that process of improvement can filter out into other aspects of performance and injury prevention. On the show today, fresh off of their recent speed training clinic collaboration, Cal, Dan, Chris and I talk about a variety of topics on speed and athletic performance, including “muscular vs. elastic” athletes, the importance of strong feet (and toes), reflexive plyometric and speed training, as well as the best weight room exercises and alignments that have a higher transfer point to actual sport running. This was a really enjoyable podcast to put together. Today's episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, Lost Empire Herbs, and the Elastic Essentials online course. Timestamps and Main Points: 2:50 – Who wins the quality sleep award between Cal, Dan and Chris 5:45 – Looking back on elastic vs. muscular athletes in light of the DB Hammer era, relative to now where we are talking more about wide and narrow ISA athletes 15:42 – Thoughts on athletes who do better to train with weights above 80% of their lifting max, and then athletes who do better with less, and how to train these athletes year-round 19:12 – Dan's take on altitude drops, and how much athletes can progress into drops, or be more responsive to it than others 22:25 – The reflexive nature of things like dropping, falling and “plyo-soidal” oriented over-speed training 33:00 – Some different strategies Chris sees in sprinting on the 1080 with elastic vs. muscular athletes in mind 40:21 – Foot and toe strength, athlete function, and the role of the nervous system 50:05 – Thoughts on foot positions in light of weight-room work, and its link to sport speed 54:38 – How stronger athletes can manage a wider step width in a sprint start, vs. weaker athletes 1:03:58 – How athletes work off of coach's mirroring of a movement 1:07:55 – Cal, Dan and Chris's favorite single leg training movements for speed and athletic movement, particularly the “Yuri” hip flexor training movement 1:18:10 – Moving past “barbell hip thrusts” in training into standing or 45 degree hyper type versions “I think the elastic component boils down to altitude drops” Fichter “Everyone is going to deal with that collision in a different way, sometimes it is going to have to do with tendon length, or isometric strength” Korfist “Isometrics correlated a lot closer to increasing power, after an isometric block with my throwers, than it did my sprinters” Dietz “The throwers produced a lot more force above 60%, the runners produced a lot more force below 60%” “I can give you examples where something works for my athletes, and then 16 weeks later, it might make them worse, and that's the art of coaching” “Is the hormonal/global response (from lifting heavy weights) going to outweigh the negatives?” Korfist “We've trained a lot of people without jumping at all, just landings” Fichter “I tested a kid with some reflexes that were off, and as soon as we implemented some overspeed work with the 1080,
We did it all for the nookie before talking about the evolution of our training theory about output at VO2 max being a key indicator of aging and long-term performance in athletes, why mechanical power output is often under-appreciated in running training, the weird science of glucose tolerance tests, wonderful news out of Kansas, the predictable disaster of Woodstock '99, the multiple uses of percussive massage tools, why hip labrums are the worst, and how MRI results can be misleading in some cases. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik Korem See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's episode features Rob Assise. Rob has 19 years of experience teaching mathematics and coaching track and field at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He also has coached football and cross country, and is also the owner of the private training business, Re-evolution athletics. Rob has appeared on multiple prior episodes of the podcast, speaking on his unique approach to jumps training that combines the practice with many sport-like elements. Track and field offers us a great insight as to the effectiveness of a variety of training methods, because each method will be ultimately judged by how fast an athlete ended up running, how far or high they jumped, or how far they threw. In track and field, we combine power alongside technical development in the process of achieving event mastery. Rob has a creative and integrative process to his own training methods, and on today's show, he speaks largely on some “crescendo style” adjustments to common plyometric and sprint drills that he uses to help athletes improve their technique and rhythmic ability over a period of time. On the show Rob talks about his recent sprint-jump complexes, use of asymmetrical plyometrics, and where he has gone with the “minimal effective dose” style of training. He also shares his thoughts on tempo sprints in the role of jump training, and as we have spoken on in other podcasts, manipulating velocity in a movement in order to improve not only one's speed, to help them clear up technical issues.
