Anika Molesworth (pictured), who is on the board of directors of Farmers for Climate Action, is on the New South Wales Committee of the Crawford Fund and is a Governor of WWF, Australia, regularly turns to Twitter to air her views about the urgency of our need to address the climate crisis. Anika's argument, which aligns with most other climate-conscious people around the world, was underlined with the recent release of the Australian 2021 State of the Environment Report. U.S. President Joe Biden is equally concerned about the climate crisis and has committed huge sums to combat the issue, both in terms of mitigation and adaptation. Part 2 of this episode with Tanya Massy was recorded in two locations. The first half was recorded back at the farm in Western Australia, on that hay bale. We delved further into Tanya's deep personal journey of leaving Severn Park and starting up a new farming enterprise on the other side of the country. That was recorded back in January, as that enterprise was just going to market. Then came heartbreak. Soon after we left, Tanya and Kris had to pull the plug on it all and return to the Massy farm at Severn Park. As fate would have it, come late March, Tanya and Kris had just arrived back at Severn Park when we were in northern Victoria visiting Ian and Courtney (my guests from episode 89). So we followed the Murray River for a while, wound our way through the Snowy Mountains, and reconnected with Tanya back at Severn Park for the second half of this episode. We talk about what happened, how they're recovering, how the land is thriving, and what they're starting up now. This conversation was recorded on-location at Severn Park in New South Wales, on 3 April 2022. Anika Molesworth is an agroecology scientist, a farmer and now, importantly, an author.  The far western New South Wales farmer is passionately interested in and concerned about food security, nature conservation, rural community development, and climate change. Being eager to read about those issues, but without the usual doom and gloom surrounding those topics and in books mostly devoid of hope, Anika went searching for her ideal book only to be confronted by bare shelves and so she fell upon her only option - write the book herself and "Our Sunburn Country" is the outcome. At just 12-years-old, Anika moved with her parents to their far western New South Wales farm and almost immediately fell in love with the seemingly endless horizons, the boundless array of wildlife populating the area and, with her family, witnessed the differences that climate change was bringing to the property. Anika has buried herself in learning what climate change means for the family's farm, farmers more broadly, Australian people generally and, of course, the world. This is a conversation that in some ways I was not expecting, but in other ways I sense I have long been waiting for. I was spell-bound throughout the dialogue with Anika Molesworth, as she shows through her experience, knowledge and actions how we can all influence change, be courageous and do things differently to address climate change and preserve our food systems now and for the future.Anika is a PhD in Agricultural Science, Founder Director of Farmers for Climate Action, Founder of Climate Wise Agriculture, WWF-Australia Governor and the author of the very brilliant ‘Our Sunburnt Country'.Her journey moving as a child from urban Melbourne to extremely rural Broken Hill, in far Western New South Wales Australia, into a farmers boots and hat as a young woman as well as through a Degree in Applied Sciences followed by a Masters in Sustainable Agriculture and the PhD as above. As knowledgeable as Anika clearly is, she is the furthest thing from academia, very much grounded by the red earth of the place she loves, the ailing of the land she has known since a child and her observations of the human-driven changes to landscape, ecology and community. Her gift is that of a brilliant storyteller, one who – in her own words – shows rather than tells, speaks emotively, and walks the courageous steps of a leader who with every breath strives to create a better, more regenerative, place-based world.Anika and I really looking forward to bringing this conversations to you – we hope you enjoy and find both illumination and inspiration throughout.Key out-takes from this episode;Connect to nature- This begins with a sense of wonderment with our surrounds & leaning closely with the natural world- Connecting closely with the landscape continues to drive everything Anika does- Anika's parents encouraged her to turn over the leaves & the rocks, to study this placePlace-based Change- Anika saw the place that she loves deteriorate before her eyes- One of the main changes we need to make is feeling connected to place- Anika could almost reach down, put her hand on the ground and feel her own hear beating, that's how connected she feels with this place- It's important for people to feel connection to place not only for joy & love, but for when they see it ailing- We have to be better observers and recognise what is not going well in the worldNarrative & Storytelling- Change the narrative, not just doom & gloom, share the vision for the better world"- These are the facts, this is what's happening - but told in a way that punches you in the heart- We are the protagonist, we are at the heart of the story, very much creating the next chapter- We need a different approach, changing the stories we are telling- The time for fear based narrative is passing, the time for illumination & inspiration, talking about what is possible & can be done is hereDevelop Capability- How do we give people the capability to describe their visions and convert them into reality?Leading- Be a leader of your own life, and the sphere of influence around you- You can help influence change for the better, because you too are a leader- What we need is more of the verb. What we need is more action. We need more people leading than following.Influence & Change- We are the most trusted messengers to those we care the most for- Don't underestimate the change we can make within our sphere of influence- The essence of everyone is where the change occurs- Changing behaviours of institutions & businesses, and you will charge the behaviours of the people within them- What would we love to create if we dare to imagine this better world we say we want?Follow Anika, connect to Farms for Climate Action and order a copy of Our Sunburnt Country:https://www.anikamolesworth.com/https://twitter.com/AnikaMolesworthhttps://www.instagram.com/anikamolesworth/https://www.facebook.com/anikamolesworthdrhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/anika-molesworth-phdhttps://www.panmacmillan.com.au/author/anika-molesworth/https://farmersforclimateaction.org.au/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Dr Anika Molesworth. Anika is a farmer, scientist, storyteller and the author of an incredible new book “Our Sunburnt Country”. She is a passionate advocate for courageous action to save our land, food and world from the climate crisis at our doorstep.    Anika is making her voice heard across Australia and the world as she works to save her family farm in the semi-arid far west of New South Wales and in turn Australia's rural places. Anika is in touch with the land and understands its necessity. Anika understands the interconnection between the actions we take, the climate and in turn our food security. This is why she is dedicated to acting on and communicating the need for sustainable farming, environmental conservation and climate change action.    Anika completed a Bachelor of Science specialising in Agribusiness, a Masters of Sustainable Agriculture, and a PhD in Agricultural Science. She has been working in international agricultural development for the past six years, giving her a holistic perspective of agricultural issues at global scale. Anika is a founding director of Farmers for Climate Action, a movement that puts farmers on the frontlines of climate change at the centre of climate solutions. She also founded Climate Wise Agriculture as a knowledge sharing platform for climate change as it relates to food systems around the world.    https://twitter.com/AnikaMolesworth https://www.instagram.com/anikamolesworth/ https://www.anikamolesworth.com/   In Part 1 of the podcast, Anika and I discuss her new book ‘Our Sunburnt Country', what inspired her to write it and how she bridged the gap of scientist and storyteller. We explore Anika's move with her family from urban Melbourne to a farm near Broken Hill in Far Western NSW and the perspective shift that followed - that is the obvious interconnection between nature, food and people. Anika explains how her ‘connection to place' became the basis for getting involved in climate solutions.   In Part 2, we discuss the necessary role of everyday people taking action and becoming community leaders, the groups on the ground working hard to find solutions, how we each have a unique capacity for positive change, why Anika is hopeful for our future, tackling climate in the way we tackled covid - with science, the expense of not acting on climate, how policy levers can improve agriculture and rural Australia, the solutions are in the hands of individuals, industry and policy makers together, a moment of clarity and more.   Time Stamps Introduction: 0:00 - 5:00 Part 1: 5:01 - 31:50 Part 2: 31:51 - 69:18 Conclusion: 69:19 - 69.59   Moments of Clarity Instagram: @momentsofclaritypodcast Facebook: @momentsofclaritypodcast Twitter: @BarneyMOC Email: momentsofclaritypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast by Matthew Sortino Music by Christian Prochilo Artwork by Michael Chrisanthopoulos

Someone who has been quite vocal about the issue, with a lived experience of its effects, is Dr. Anika Molesworth.Anika moved to a sheep station outside of Broken Hill when she was 12, just as the Millennium Drought hit. She witnessed firsthand the way in which her surroundings changed, becoming dry, and with challenges of heat waves and dust storms.Anika's new book Our Sunburnt Country is a hope-filled story of her life, and shares that we can indeed make a difference despite the enormity of the challenge. Dr. Anika Molesworth is a passionate farmer, scientist, and storyteller. She is raising awareness of the environmental effects of climate change and injecting a strong new voice of hope for the farming and agricultural communities. She has been invited to speak at the UN Paris COP21 climate meeting. The far-western New South Wales farmer, who is an agro-ecologist, uses what technology is available to her as a means to promote her views about why we should be acting to counter climate change. Her latest innovation is the creation of an idea and a website - "The Positive Alternative"  - through which she and her team will create stories of how farmers, primarily, and the rest of us are responding to the changing climate and how we are cresting the positive alternative. The resultant documentaries will be taken audiences around the world. Another climate optimist is Christiana Figeures who played a key role in seeing nearly 200 countries reach an agreement in 2015 about the need to confront the climate crisis and leave that French city with the Paris Accord behind them. Working with Tom Rivett-Carnac, she has created "Global Optimism". Another optimistic and positive group is the Melbourne-based "Music for a Warming World".

PODCAST EPISODE 43: Anika Molesworth, farmer, scientist, storyteller, Wilyakali Country and Melbourne, Australia Anika Molesworth – farmer, scientist, storyteller, soon to be author – is a truly inspirational force. With an agricultural science career in that has taken her around the globe, and many awards, degrees and accolades under her belt, Anika is fighting the good fight against climate change. Her motivation is personal, and stems from her life experience growing up on a farm in rural Australia; she now speaks and writes on resilient agro-ecological systems and helps farmers around the world respond to climate change in a way that builds their capacity while looking after the environment. For these reasons and more, I am thrilled to welcome Anika to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast for episode 43. Anika recalls the transition she experienced as a child from living in the city of Melbourne – where food arrived in the kitchen via grocery bags from the supermarket – to moving with her family to a farm 1000 kms away on Wilyakali Country in far west New South Wales. Here, life was completely different to what she had experienced before, as was the source of the family's daily meals: “City buildings and cars were replaced with open skies and paddocks with kangaroos. Food suddenly became something that did not originate from a supermarket, but from the farm that surrounded me.” Falling in love with the landscape, she understood the privilege and benefit of having a connection to growing food that would nourish people. On the farm, her family learnt the ways of the land, an intimate experience that involved unravelling secrets and knowledge about the soil, the local flora and fauna. The very genuine, hands-on education developed a sense of belonging for Anika and her family in their new home and community. Touched by a ten-year drought, Anika, her family and the local community waited and waited for the rains to arrive between 2000 and 2010. This inspired Anika to research climate change, and to find out what was behind this devastating and extreme weather condition that was wreaking havoc on the farming community and natural environment. Anika Molesworth is a wildly positive force in Australian and international agriculture. She is widely recognised as a “Future Shaper”, a warrior of sustainability, a community leader, and a game changer for agricultural science. Tune in to hear Anika and I discuss life on the farm, her incredible vision, and how we can all do our part to fight the war on climate change. https://www.anikamolesworth.com

Anika references the sense of responsibility she feels to not only protect her land, but the communities and industry that are so intertwined with it. She sees a significant role for farmers to connect people to climate through the food and through what may seem like small & meaningless roles. Her work has seen her front and centre in national debates, on televisions but it's her work in the fields of South East Asia that stands out to me.
