Very rarely do we host guests who get in touch requesting an interview on Better World Leaders, however the nature of Christopher Marquis' note stood out and I'm delighted that we have somehow entangled to create this conversation. Christopher is Sinyi Professor of Chinese Management at the Judge Business School at Cambridge University and has a background in both social and organisational change movements. In this conversation we explore the focus of his last book, The Profiteers, and he reveals the underlying framework for change embedded within that work. This conversation provides several 'tangible' and relatable examples of organisations successfully striving to both themselves enact change, and catalyse greater transformation in our economies, societies and broader structures, and I'm grateful to Chris for his time in creating this episode, and for all his ongoing endeavours teaching within one of the world's most prestigious business schools. This conversation is as serious as it is playful, as practical in exploration of practice as it is theoretical in examination of a framework, and as generative a journey for me as a practictioner as it is fascinating as a podcaster! Welcome to the wonderful, rich and informative dialogue with Bill Sharpe, co-creator of the 3 Horizons futures framework. For anyone interested in leaning into futures thinking and creating experiences of futures work for leaders, groups or whole organisations, this conversation could well be of interest. Having been aware of 3 Horizons for a few years, read the book several time and been practicing the framework with groups on numerous occasions, this was a wonderful opportunity to be in dialogue with Bill sharing our experiences, practices and practical examples of applying the framework in real living contexts. When Laureline shared in her network that she was co-hosting a course on Futures Literacy for transformative climate action, I was drawn in and joined the cohort to experience this wonderful, exhilarating and enlivening work myself. Those days immersed in the Futures Literacy framework were the first of what has now become a continuing interaction with Loes Damhof, UNESCO Chair of Futures Literacy at Hanze University in Gronigen in Holland. I first encountered Mel Geltch after receiving an invitation to join a federally funded leadership program for bushfire impacted communities, following the Australian 'Black Summer' of 2019/20. From the prose in that invitation, I sensed I was encountering a fellow in the work, and as I responded to the expression of interest for that program, I also wrote to Mel and expressed that sense, and that I wondered whether we'd find ourselves weaving together beyond the duration of that program. That inception moment was the genesis of two threads which have great meaning for me - the beginning of my journey as a practitioner of the Art of Hosting and Harvesting Conversations that Matter, and my unfolding and ever deepening friendship with Mel. Carol Sanford returns for her second episode in this season, introducing the core disciplines within the framework she introduces in her latest work - No More Gold Stars (a full transcript of this conversation is available here on Medium) In this conversation Carol shares the 6 disciplines which provide the framework for ways of being, collaboratively interacting and organising at home, work and in community which are grounded in self-determining, regenerative paradyms. Carol calls out the pervasiveness of behaviouralism, the profound challenges this approach has manifested in our social systems, and how the approach she offers in No More Gold Stars can provide a radically enlivening, immensely productive and nurturing set of practices which enable the innate human potential of everyone who choses this way of being. This conversation very much builds on our season's opening episode with Carol, which focused on Indirect Work. Indirect Work is both Carol's now previous latest released book, and is one of the disciplines intergal to the No More Gold Stars frameworks. Zoë Routh returns for her second BWL conversation, focusing a story of climate change impacted human exploration. Zoë is the author of many books, her latest 'The Olympus Project' being her first work of fiction. In this work, the stage is set by unravelling ecologies on Earth, driven by unmitigated climate change impacts and turbulent cultural tensions. Humankind's path seems destined for new worlds, and the book focuses on the team selected to lead an inter-planetary colonisation mission. The story unfolds as deep-seated values, biases and cultural norms emerge and are carried with the characters as each of them goes on their own developmental journey as the cosmic miles speed by. Zoē has spent years working with leaders at all levels across all types of organisational sectors, and central to her work has been two key themes which we explore in this conversation - values-centred cultures and leaders progressing through stages of adult development. Tim Hollo charts pathways towards living democracy

Once you start to engage with systems change, it's becomes increasingly necessary to examine every system. How each operates, functions, inter-relates to every other system, and is co-dependant for sustained change on the rate of change of many points of convergence. And so, on a podcast primarily focused on the role of leaders in organisations, we come to explore the need for change in our political systems. Why? Because so often we find the desire, capacity and capability for change at scale to be caught up in the intermeshed webs of layered systems that are woven through, created by and are dependant on our political systems. This scintillating conversation with Tim Hollo traces his exploration of what he terms 'Living Democracy', a set of frameworks very much alive in the world already, which if harnessed and embraced more broadly, would bring living systems approaches to political systems across the globe. Tim's work is visionary, visceral and wildly exciting - certainly for me! - as we chart the many reasons for the 'stuckness' of our current democratic systems, delve into the deep historical reasons for the embedded resistance to change and unpack the many pathways which could lead to an entirely new way of organising politically - one that centres life and the living world. Following off our 4 previous episodes on regeneration, this conversation feels timely indeed, I hope you enjoy. Paul Hawken has been striving to bring attention to new ways of organising, working and living for longer than I have been alive. Of his many books, I have been most inspired by 'The Ecology of Commerce' which I discovered at university in the late 90s, and 'Blessed Unrest' in the mid-2000s. I have been consistently impressed by his capacity to bring into the mainstream approaches and frameworks which are much needed, and only adopted at the margins, and his relentless flow of articles, talks and books and continually expanded those margins and enabled people like me to follow their calling through the many ways to co-create better worlds. His most recent works in Drawdown and Regeneration focus explicitly on climate action, and apply this tenured approach to our greatest challenge, shifting our ways of knowing, being and doing to not only change systems, institutions and structures - much more than this, to change our relationship with ourselves, our communities and Earth by becoming regenerators of place. Our conversation with Four Arrows focuses on how fundamental worldviews are to inform our interpretations of the world around us, informing and guiding our decisions, interactions with our fellow humans and the more than human world, and influencing our actions and how we perceive the consequences of those actions on others. Pivotal to this discussion an invitation exploring your relationship with the more than human world, especially the plant world, as an exploratory way of practicing this shift of worldview in a practical way. We explore cultural appropriation, the increasing understanding of this in non-Indigenous people and emerging sensitivity to this, and that the frame of a ‘Kinship worldview' provides a pathway to navigate this appropriately. We also share our hopes for the possible futures of our worlds, especially in relation to climate change, and our personal journeys of hope which have shifted for both of us over years of lived experience and deep reflection, and what's possible when we move beyond courage into a fearless trust in the universe. Four Arrows and I hope you enjoy this conversation, and look forward to any responses or experiences you'd like to share with us. Key Frameworks introduced: - Worldview shift to Restore the Kinship Worldview - Worldsensing as an expansion of worldview - 40 Precepts for rebalancing life on Planet Earth - CAT-FAWN (Concentration Activated Trance - Fear Authority Words Nature) Key Concepts discussed: - Shifting of worldviews fundamental to restorative & regenerative transformation - What is world-sensing and why is it important to consider shifting beyond world-views - Moving beyond courage into fearless trust in the universe Key Prompts to Practice provided: Look at the worldview chart with intention and you'll figure out what to do! From the first moment I was in dialogue with today's guest, I felt a warmth, a sincerity of curiosity and a genuineness of intention. Being with Giles Hutchins in deep dialogue building up to this conversation, during and beyond it as we've begun to walk a shared path, I've come to appreciate a depth of will to hold well intentioned folk such as myself as we shift, unravel and re-weave ourselves and our organisations into more regenerative beings and networks. This is complex, meaningful, challenging and often confronting work, as I have myself experienced in my own journey of becoming a regenerative leader. Giles has been deeply immersed in this work for many years, and carries a kindness and intensive that I've personally found to be both tender and revealing. He has worked with organisations of many sizes, ilks and orientations across the globe and is sought out as a regenerative coach, facilitator and speaker. I have so very much benefited from being in conversation with Giles, and to working directly with him enabling my own development, which this conversation was in many ways to beginning of. Today's guest is the most deeply provocative, developmental and loving regenerative guide I have been honoured to connect with and be developing within her communities. Carol Sanford is acknowledged by many as a matriarch within the resurgent global regeneration movement, having been in deep practice in her own life, family and work both in multi-national organisations and in developmental education for over 45 years. Carol is the author of 6 books, several of which are cited as essential reading at Harvard and Stamford. She is the founder of the Carol Sanford Institute and Seed Communities, a developmental community for business people, entrepreneurs, investors and practitioners to deepen their understanding of regenerative paradigms, engage in developmental work and life-based practice engaging regenerative frameworks. Carol has done more than any other person to shift my way of being, through my engagement over years with her frameworks, communities and being state. I am immensely grateful to Carol for all that she has brought to the world as one of the deep practitioners and most tenured wayfinders of the emergent movement of regenerators. Her books, podcasts, and public writing and speaking provide a means for all to shift their thinking around business, investing, parenting, community organising, media creation and more. Her developmental communities and summits are some of the most confronting and enlivening learning spaces I've had the honour of participating in. All of this being said, I'm delighted to share this conversation on her latest book, Indirect Work, which has we discuss provides an entry point to the greater body of her work, and a pathway to explore the deepest shifting that's needed for real transformation to occur. Key Framework introduced: Consciousness - Culture - Capability, from Indirect Work Key Concepts discussed: Sensing & shifting Paradigms Exploring Matrixes Re-examining Indirect Work - exploring Consciousness. Key Prompts provided: Where did that come from? What was I thinking before? Stop & reflect what framework is limiting you and blinding to you. Suggested practices recommended: Setting an aim - instead of focusing on achieving specific goals, set an aim to strive towards. This is a developmental pathway you set for yourself which is proximate enough to observe progress. Engage in long thought - rather than trying to tackle a problem by solving it and moving on to the next one, re-examine your thinking on an issue or development area over an extended period of time, noting what's changing in your thinking or broader senses about the issue or problem and how you are approaching it. This is a conversation I was not anticipating, and I enjoyed greatly, with someone whom I was deeply honoured to co-create a conversation with. Catherine Ashton is unique in many ways, as the first EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, the former Leader of the House of Lords (British Parliament upper house) with multiple Ministerial tenures in the British government. In this conversation we discuss the very real context in which so much leading is done behind the scenes via the craft of diplomacy, that there are no significant challenges that any nation can solve alone, and how we must find better ways to collaborate – and that creating better world leaders is all about collaboration. It's Catherine and my great pleasure to share this conversation we you as the final guest co-created conversation of the 5th season of Better World Leaders. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on elements of the co-created dialogue; Tenured challenges · Crisis's seldom have a short fuse. They have a long fuse, which is lit when people feel they have had enough · Often these challenges have emerged over decades, so why is it that we feel we can resolve them in short periods of time? · We need to get better at the commitment to build circumstances where leaders can say to populations that change needs longer timeframes Togetherness · As nations, there isn't a single challenge that we face that we can solve alone · We must accept that we need to find ways to collaborate better · Let's be frank, climate change is the biggest challenge of all Collaboration · The best people to collaborate with...are those with whom you share the same values & ideas · What keeps showing up - what are the values that give you the foundation for collaboration? · We will support those who need support and we will be focusing on the big problems that can't be solved without collaboration with all of us The craft of diplomacy · You've got to stick to what it is you're trying to do, that's the only way you will be able to collaborate sufficiently to get it done · It's about looking at the jigsaw puzzle. You have a picture in your mind of what you will see what you've succeeded. What matters is what's in your mind, not how big the pieces are. · This is about finding shared ground and finding people with whom to co-create shared dialogue Context & navigating conflict · It's really important to humanise the problems we find ourselves in, so we can see the impact on ordinary people, which we all are · 3 tools for navigating conflict; warm up meeting to build relationships, establish a level of trust with honesty & fairness, reflect back on progress. · Be aware that people don't come into a room without a whole bunch of stuff they are carrying We are all diplomats · Whatever you do, you've got to think 'and then what', with your eye on the long-term · There's an invitation to everyone to be more diplomatic in their own lives · People often ask me how did you learn to negotiate?...We all negotiate everyday To read more of Catherine's story, you can pre-order her book ‘And then what?' via the links below, ahead of the full release in February 2023; via Goodreads via Bookshop via Amazon

I first came across Charlotte in my LinkedIn feed around a year ago, when she shared a beautifully poignant and vulnerable post about talking to her kids about the bushfires. Without needing to check her profile, I knew this was an aligned being, and invited her to connect. A few months later, we spoke for the first time to explore co-creating a conversation here discussing our shared energies for working with change makers in the climate ecosystem in Australia and beyond. I'm now knowing Charlotte as a deeply intentional being, a lover of nature, the ocean in particular, and as a career-long champion of the need for our businesses, societies and cultures to take a more caring lens to how we are in the world. This calling has now manifested in her role at Climate Salad, a leading Australian Climate tech enabler, and has seen her profile rise to be included in LinkedIn's list of top ‘green voices' for 2022. It's a great pleasure to share this mutually personal conversation about Charlotte and my work, our calling to do what we can from where we are to engage in the wicked problems of our times, and to invite you to do the same. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on elements of the co-created dialogue; Climate is the main challenge · All paths seem to lead to climate, at least all that I see & walk upon · If we don't solve climate, we don't solve anything · This is climate change, it's in our backyards, it's impacting now Overwhelm · Until recently climate seemed too hard to tackle, too big to bite off and chew · It's hard not to be overwhelmed thinking about the kind of world we are leaving our kids and yet we have to have hope · I still have hope that you can shift this position, come full circle and throw yourself into this endeavour because that's been my lived experience Shifting values · I realised that what I was doing was signing up to values which weren't mine and I was making choices informed by the preferences of other people · It's all about go get, and when you've gotten enough, maybe you can give back. We can change that approach. · I need to show that I am living by principles of protecting the planet Joining in · Where are you working right now? Use that sphere of influence, you don't even have to change what you're doing to have a really positive influence. · Think about all the people you work with, why not implement some sustainability initiatives? · We actually need everyone, perfectly imperfect, in the climate space · We can do a lot less harm, and a lot more good, where we are Communicating with Kids · I think a lot about why I have this affinity with nature · It's really important to immerse our kids in nature, so they form that bond. · I think a lot about how to approach the conversation · Work with what they see, kids are the most amazing observers. As long as I've been in Australia I've been aware of Stephen Moir, someone with whom I share many professional alignments, yet his journey always seemed ahead of my own. More recently I've found the alignment even greater, especially since being invited by one of my clients to join Steve's community ‘Professionals Advocating for Climate Action'. Steve's background as a recruiter and founder of the long established and highly successful Moir Group doesn't indicate anything radical or activist, and yet he and his partner Caroline found themselves inspired to do more, and to work within the deep professional networks they have to connect with shared purpose, aligned values and a fundamental desire to do more. This group has over 300 members and regularly features guest speakers including leading Australian politicians, business and professional leaders from across the spectrum of finance, health, education and all sectors of the broader economy. This is a great conversation with Steve around nurturing the fundamentals of community building to bring professionals together to support action and bring awareness to our most significant of challenges. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on elements of the dialogue; Purpose & Engagement · There's a lot of people looking for purpose · More people are looking for leaders who can connect their work to a greater purpose · People are asking their employers where they stand on the environment, and if their answers aren't good, they leave Community · The business community is leading on this, driven largely by their employees · I get asked this question a lot - do you have any hope? · Examples of action gives hope & optimism that keeps people going · There's a missing link around community in all businesses Leaders · 90% of people who are looking to move are not aligned to their boss or the organisational culture · Leadership now & going forward is the key thing · What defines great business is great leaders who live and breathe purpose and values · Key Capabilities - Humility, Empathy, Listening, Nurturing Psychological Safety · If you don't nurture the conditions for inclusion, any diversity you foster will not succeed. · 3 things to focus on - get involved where you are passionate, be true to purpose & live a life aligned, humble leading where you don't need to be the centre of attention. Over the past few years I've become increasingly aware of and inspired by a being known as Michelle Maloney. Over and over, some of the most interesting areas that were drawing my attention and curiosity, I found Michelle immersed in the heart of them in Australia and beyond. Regenerative initiatives, centring Aboriginal ways of knowing, doing and being, new pathways to economic progress, ways of organising ourselves, our communities and societies in ways that respect and revere nature – Michelle not only shows up, she convenes some of the most meaningful spaces that attract both the well intentioned and those who are forging ahead in these emergent modes. I am thus deeply honoured to be sharing here the first conversation with Michelle, exploring some of her journey as well as the core themes that occupy her endeavours to transform education, the law, economic systems and structures of governance more broadly. Yes, this is a deep conversation, and an expansive one, and we knowingly offer more questions than we seek to answer in a single conversation. I hope our conversation invites you to explore more deeply many of the themes we cover, and hopefully to connect directly with Michelle and join in any or all of the hubs and groups she invites to gather. Both Michelle and I welcome your thoughts and reflections via the connection links below if you'd like to reach out. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on elements of the dialogue; Nurturing conditions for ecological society If you have a society that understands where it lives, creates and recreates Earth-centred norms; and each generation shares with the next, you have the nurturing conditions for an ecological society To nurture conditions for humans to care deeply about the living world, we have to change the way humans think about their place in the world How do we understand the psyche of humans who don't value nature? How do we respect societies who do? How do we transform ourselves into a culture that is admirable & sustainable, that thinks to the future and understands our humble place in the big picture? Decolonising our minds & hearts is about understanding our history as a species, and as people living in this continent; it's also about challenging modernity the ideas we've absorbed about progress Connecting to nature I'm hugely inspired by any culture that remains connected to our bio-physical reality Where we live matters. What we do in a place matters. The colonial project here is younger than in other places, we still have the potential to heal and restore; we still have so much wonder & beauty remaining in the natural world It's about rethinking what we love & getting more time with who and what we love. More connection, more time to play & be with those we love. How do we find a new way forward for our societies by reconnecting with nature? Governance systems By governance, I refer to the way we come together, the way we live, work and play together, the norms, laws and practices of our society. In this conversation, I welcome back a dear friend and guide in the great work, who on her first visit here hosted me and beautifully held the space for exploration of one of my formative narratives. Here, we return to our usual flow, as I host an abundant and deep conversation with Alice Howard-Vyse. Alice is a practitioner of many approaches to living systems practice. She is Lead Convenor for Regen Sydney, Founder of Humanise This, an alumnus of Schumacher Collage (UK) and Fellow of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership. Ever since meeting Alice shortly before the emergence of the pandemic, I have considered myself fortunate every time I've had the opportunity to connect, share space, witness Alice in her work and thrive in the places and networks she activates, and this conversation is no exception! I hope our conversation brings you cause for some deep application of Alice's ‘practically profound' approaches. We'd both love to hear how this conversation landed for you, and what you have found in your experiments with any of the practices we explore here. We both welcome your thoughts and reflections via the connection links below. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on elements of the dialogue; Systems What's the legacy of what we design? Thinking in nested systems. Nurturing the health of any one system, we nurture the health of the whole What is the role of humanity in the service of a regenerative future? What if our role was to live in this land with joy? Where are we disrupting what actually wants to happen? Nurturing inner space It starts with us, with our way of being. What experiments have you played with in nurturing inner space? What have you done, and what have you found? There's a deficit of intentional space where you can tap into a deeper sensing How do we keep coming back to that place which feels like home, like integrated self? How do we do this? In community with others who make us feel like ourselves & bring back to that sense when we forget Finding our way back to ourselves & our communities The ability to go deep with others is commensurate with our ability to go deep into ourselves Listening & conversations How do we tune into our feeling about what's going on in the world around us and use those feelings as intelligence? The kind of conversations we have shape the world that we create. How do we have more generative conversations? How do we become curious about what's going on for someone else & what their experience is? Listen with one's whole self, to one's whole self, and the whole selves of others. How do we do that? Our ability to listen to ourselves determines how deeply we can listen to others The gift of being deeply listened to by being truly present is one of the greatest that can be given or received. The conversation with Dimity Podger is a beautiful combination of these strands woven throughout this flowing exploration of how we nurture conditions to regenerate ourselves, our role on the planet and the ways we come together. Dimity is a fellow regenerative practitioner, and has been immersed in exploring values-centred organisations and communities for several decades, focusing a PhD in Sustainability Education on values-centred approaches to social transformation and organising. Her work flows along several channels, partnering with organisations across corporate, government and for-purpose sectors enabling leaders to rise to pursue their life's purpose striving in the fullest expression of both their personal, and their collective organisations' values. She leads the purpose-driven leadership consultancy, Barasa Consulting Group, and most recently, has been exploring the pathways to regeneration on a national-scale here in Australia, working as Regenerative Communities Project Manager for the WWF's Innovate to Regenerate Challenge. This conversation is deep. Existential. Radical. Why? Because Laureline Simon speaks to the root cause of the harm that's impacting on each of us, every community and ecosystem across the breadth of our shared planet. This conversation hits home, in a nurturing, generative way, as Laureline speaks from lived experience striving in global systems and shows meaningful examples of how this harm can be repaired. It's been an honour to cocreate many wonderful conversations on Better World Leaders over the past two years. In that time there's been many a dialogue which has given me cause for reflection, and this conversation with Laureline crests the list of those that have. Her openness to explore deeply personal experiences, the range of her experience working through the United Nations across the globe, and the frankness of her insights speak to the fundamental nature of how we must change if we are truly to become resilient as individuals, societies and as a species once again.Laureline Simon is the Founder Director of One Resilient Earth, a European based Not-for-Profit who partner with numerous global and hyper-local organisations on multi-level, systemic initiatives to enable resilient communities by nurturing shifts in mindset, community connection and ecosystem restoration. This work is as inspirational as it is transformative, and provides a wonderful example to us all of how nurturing conditions for interdependent complexity to thrive is vital for the wellbeing of our beings, and the planetary system that sustains us all.I hope our conversation brings you both contemplation and inspiration. It was a great joy speaking with Laureline and I was both validated and informed by our discussion. We both welcome your thoughts and reflections via the connection links below if you'd like to reach out. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Shifting mindsets- It's a big moment when we realise how much we need to unlearn and decentre our worldviews- Is it just industrialisation, or is there a deeper worldview that enables industrial exploitation of the world's resources?- What if we weren't thinking about nature & people as resources?- What if the idea of separation of ourselves from nature, which is a mindset, is the root cause of the crisis?- Climate change is a symptom of the crisis of relationship we have with the world and nature- The ecological crisis is a crisis of relationship- We wouldn't be exploiting people if we didn't consider them to be different from us- We need to build capability to operate on multiple levels at the same time; that's why we work with resilient mindsets, thriving communities and restoring ecosystems- People may not realise that a lot of the decisions which are made in response to climate change are coming from a threat response.- We have one Earth and many worldsActions for impact- You can have global actions that have little impact, and you can have local actions that have real impact- It's more about coalitions or networks and experimenting with ways of being more radical- It's about addressing the root causes of an issue, otherwise everything you do is cosmetic- There's nothing worse than feeling that you're taking positive action, when in actual fact all that you're doing is reinforcing a system that is causing harm- The actions we need to take are much deeper than reducing greenhouse gases, we have to repair our relationships with ecosystems and people who have been harmedSystemic change- I've been into the systems, and the premises are flawed- We are too resource dependant, and are not even nurturing the ecosystems that provide our resources- How can we change in a way which is commensurate with the change that's coming?- We're actually really good at adapting to complex systems when we are deeply connected to them and sensorily aware of their existence- We need to build communities of support as we go through radical shifts- It's about a deeper societal transformation, a cultural transformation- Having a more regenerative approach, building our relationships, developing new relationships with ourselves, to our fears, our pain and discomfort, if we are going to become the people who can deal with the scale of changeNurturing conditions- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the context- If we don't look at the health of ecosystems we're not going to nurture conditions for the systems that sustain us.- We need many different approaches working together, with people nurturing the conditions that are best for them- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the contextFind out more about Laureline and her work here:LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/laureline-s/LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/one-resilient-earthInstagram page: https://www.instagram.com/oneresilientearth/YouTube page : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkxlFnIdd3wdzbjv8ZhUVCAOne Resilient Earth - https://oneresilientearth.org/Our climate circles: The Climate Workers Circle and the Youth Climate Circlehttps://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-climate-circle/https://oneresilientearth.org/the-climate-workers-circle/The Youth Learning Journey for Climate Resilience and Regeneration (September -October 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-learning-journey-for-climate-resilience-regeneration-2/Our certified course in partnership with the UNESCO chair at Hanze University, titled:Futures Literacy for Climate Resilience and Transformation (27-29 June 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/futures-literacy-for-climate-resilience-and-transformation/Other local events that we advertise on the website such as our Ecotopia exhibition inBerlin from mid-May to earl-July 2022https://oneresilientearth.org/taking-part-in-ecotopia-in-berlin/For other events: https://oneresilientearth.org/news/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. In 2015 he co-founded another non-profit called the Pinnacle Education Collaborative, a network of over 30 cultural organisations in North America that deliver virtual excursions to schools, retirement homes, remand centres and more.I hope our conversation brings you energy, cause to pause and reflect on your own educational journey and how you continue to learn today and in to the future. Ben and I look forward to hearing any thoughts, reflections or questions you have in response to our cocreated conversation – reach out or post via your preferred podcast platform or any of the connective links below. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Perceptions of reality- We need to consider what actually makes people understand how the world works- There's a disconnect between what people understand is happening and what the reality is.Education- For me it was an equity access problem- Let's be honest, the curriculum is contentious- Are we teaching what to learn or how to learn?Systems thinking- There's an issue when you're dealing with scale, that there's not a one size fits all- There's a real dynamic between local knowledge & systems knowledge, how do you fill the gap?- Think about why you're trying to solve the thingInnovation- If you're saying it's my way or the highway, then you're highway better be pretty good!- You're best thinking 5 years ago is your baggage today- The world is not static, pay attention to what's changing and adjust and adapt accordinglyNurturing conditions for leaders- Ben recommends these specific conditions to nurture i) constructive dialogue ii) diverse teams iii) resilience to the grind of time iv) fearlessness to handle failure- Diversity is vital - The richer the experiences of people the more likely to solve problems- Failure is 100% a marker of success- Empathy is the conductive fluid between dialogue, fearlessness and resilienceFind out more about Ben and his work here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-newsome-cf-frsa-03169734/https://twitter.com/BenNewsome_https://www.fizzicseducation.com.au/https://www.virtualexcursionsaustralia.com.au/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Hugh Mackay would like us all to start a revolution by making kindness our way of being in the world

In the midst of a CoVid lockdown, I discovered a book that it felt like was speaking directly to me, and in doing so, touching my soul. The author and I shared a desire to see a significant shift in the country we both love, and in the wider world. That shift speaks of rediscovery. Of a way of being that all humans know, and many appear to have forgotten. What is called for, the author proposed is in fact nothing short of a revolution. A Kindness Revolution. I was moved to write to him, expressing my deepest gratitude for what I received in reading his work over the years, my appreciation of the shared meaning I discovered in his words, and my shared hope for a future filled with kindness. In that note I invited him to co-create a conversation here, which I am deeply honoured that he accepted.Welcome to the conversation with Hugh Mackay. His latest book, The Kindness Revolution, brings together many of his views shared in previous books based on over 6 decades of work, becoming one of Australia's best known and highly regarded social researchers since the publication of his first book, Australia Reimagined. Hugh's journey as a researcher began before the popularisation of television, and his career has witnessed 3 significant social revolutions, including the most recent rise of social media influence on social interaction. As Hugh says in The Kindness Revolution, he's come to recognise the potential transformative value of kindness, and that in fact what is needed is a more radical, revolutionary brand of kindness. The significance of Hugh's work is profound, a gift to Australia, and the world, and it was a great joy to explore with him the potential meaning of kindness in contributing to creating a better world.I hope our conversation brings you joy and provocation, as well as reflection on the potential for you to bring more kindness into your life, and what you might create in the world, and the change you might activate, as you do.Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Change- We are the social change. We drive social trends.- These trends are pushing us in a direction which takes us away from our true nature.- No revolution ever started at the top, because the people at the top think everything is terrific.- Do we need memetic evolution or violent revolution?- Change needs to start with us living as though it was the kind of society we want to see.Belonging- We happen to be members of a social species. We need each other.- A sense of belonging is vital to a social species hardwired for collaboration.- Our shared humanity is far more important than a focus on our individual personal identity.- Be more accepting of difference, because we all share a common humanity, any difference is trivial.Prosperity- One thing that's driven us in this dangerous direction is economic prosperity.- We have had leadership celebrating individual prosperity.- We've had the wrong kind of leadership & too much prosperity.Kindness- Make kindness your way of being in the world.- Kindness is anything we do for another person which acknowledges them & their needs.- Ask yourself, does this act pass the kindness test?- As a kindness practice, we need a conscious reflection - was I kind enough today?- We've all been wounded, and are walking with tragedies large or small. The universal balm is kindness.- When I listen to someone, they receive it as a therapeutic gift.- Every act of kindness makes the world a better place.Find out more about Hugh and his work here:https://www.panmacmillan.com.au/author/hugh-mackay/As well as reading The Kindness Revolution, Hugh has particularly recommended these 2 of his books – What Makes Us Tick & The Good Life.Hugh also recommends that you check out the work of the Stay Kind Foundation - https://www.staykind.org/ - in particular look out for their ‘Kindfest' initiative in July.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Lauren Tucker asks how do we shift the role of our business to create the conditions for regeneration?

Have you ever been in a session when someone shows up who you sense you recognise the essence of?You can't place them, you know you've not met them before, yet something connects you that seems somehow familiar. That was my experience the first time I met Lauren Tucker.Part way through a Regenerative Business Summit in which Lauren was Resource for our team, I joined the dots, that I knew of Lauren and her work as Founder of an organisation I had long supported and admired – Kiss the Ground. What I emerged from our brief conversation that day, and germinated in following conversations – most expansively in the conversation shared here – is that Lauren was being called to evolve the the work through which I knew her. She explained that she was now being drawn into another space, a disruptive, systemic transformational space, where in bringing a community together to explore new ways of thinking and enter into new ways of being – deep regeneration would be possible.Welcome to the conversation with Lauren about how we regenerate one of our most vital, connective and nurturing systems – our Food system. What will it take for us to shift away from our embedded industrial capitalist frameworks of food as mere commodified calories, and into something so much more generative…listen on and let's explore together! Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Disruption- I realised that the system itself wasn't changing very much- We were focused on making things so simple that we weren't bothering to disrupt anything- Something disruptive happens so you see something in a different light, that you can't unsee.- We're setting up a community where we are intentionally creating a disruptionCulture- We assume we can only work on one thing at a time. Really we need to work on things in a whole way.- I've been compelled by this sense of wanting to evolve culture- Food is something we all share & is our most direct way to think about our connection to being living beings- It's not education that shifts culture. It's mindset. Then, it's small communities of people creating different conversations through a shifted mindset, that then create actions from a different perspective.- There's enough duration for the integration to occur- What we need is not better function, or more intelligent business plans or better strategies. We have to change our thinking.New ways of being- I really wanted to challenge myself to work in a new way.- How do we work on our thinking first to see new potential?- There's a reflection around what that means in your own life. That often results in a shift in how you want to live, but you only integrate and sustain this shift if you build a new capability.- We're not living multiple lives. You don't have a work life, a home life, a life with your kids, a philanthropic life. You have one life.- What's essential in this community? What does this community want to evolve into? Now how would we create those conditions?- What is living systems thinking? How do living systems work? How do we hold complexity instead of reducing & simplifying things?Regeneration- I realised I had a deep desire to work on how do we hold more complexity and regenerate these systems- I got really excited by disruption and how do we regenerate our systems- What we've been talking about as regeneration is not really the essence of regeneration- What if instead we went back to the original essence of something and regenerated our understanding of it. Then we could see so much more potential.- How do we shift the role of our business to create the conditions for regeneration?Follow Lauren via the links below;https://farmersfootprint.us/renourish-studio-intro/https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauren-tucker-3034a714/https://www.whitebuffalolandtrust.org/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Rarely do I get the opportunity to welcome a guest with such a wonderful range of frames that have been used to describe their work – especially in combination! Our guest today is Wayne Visser, a professor, a poet, a possibilist and a pracademic.Throughout this season of Better World Leaders, we'll examine the conditions needed to co-create our better world. This conversation with Wayne provides a thorough exploration of the layers of shifting consciousness, discovery of new frameworks and creation of new structures through which we can create not just a better world, but a Thriving one.Wayne has been deeply immersed in the world of sustainability as a corporate advisor and Professorial academic for many years. His revelation is that despite decades of work by millions of well intentioned people, the variety problems we face and the scale of the challenges are greater than ever before – requiring fundamental changes in systems, ethos and beliefs. To usher in Wayne's vision of a Thriving world, we need new leaders to rise, with different capabilities, values and ethics striving to co-create new forms of society, through embracing nature, technologies and practices which in combination provide an opportunity to give life to a world which is far better than me might think. This is an inspiring tale, not only of what's possible in the future, and of what's already here – Wayne's work showcases hundreds of examples of thriving practices that are transforming the world for the better right now! Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Confronting Reality- Recognising that we're living a contradiction, as we all are in the world of paradox- You have to confront the brutal reality without giving up hope that a better world is possible- What we need is to up the game because so many of the problems have gotten so much worse- We don't need to change the whole world. All we need to do is change our world.Purpose- We see the emergence of purpose in business, not just profit.- Having something to believe in is a powerful force that can get you through anything- Bringing solutions to the worlds biggest problems is the role of businessLiving Systems- The underlying principles of thriving are living systems. Relationships. Circularity, creativity, coherence, convergence & continuity.- We currently rely on things running perfectly. That's not life.- All of life is about relationships- Creativity comes from diversity, flexibility and permeable boundaries.- Creativity always comes when we have overlapping fields- We need to think about nature as an ally in our search for resilienceLeading- What does leadership mean? To be a leader is someone who can take us on a journey- 6 attributes of leaders. Systemic. Inclusive. Strategic. Ethical/Moral. Innovative. Courageous.Thriving- To thrive is to flourish & prosper, to go beyond surviving- We've had a failure of storytelling because we've had a narrative of change that's all about sacrifice- Sustainability has failed because it's boring and not inspiring- The way to up the game is not to scare, blame or shame people. Rather it is to give them something inspiring to go after. That inspiring thing is thriving.- The companies that are going to be winners are those that will invest in thriving. The future- The future will be better than you think- The momentum is unstoppable, the more we spread the solutions, the faster it will occur.- Imagine workspaces full of waterfalls, mini-forests and social space- Offices will be places where we go to bond.- This is not just dreaming, everything Wayne says already has precedenceFollow Wayne via the links below;https://www.waynevisser.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/waynevisser/Grab a copy of ‘Thriving' here via Amazon, or here via Goodreads (including links to numerous on-line sellers, or from wherever you get books.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. David Drake shares practices to return to our sense of common good and common humanity

Welcome to the fifth season of Better World Leaders. Throughout this season we'll be focusing on the theme of conditions, and considering what conditions do we need to nurture for leaders to co-create a better world.I'm delighted and honoured to bring you the first conversation of the season with a man who has devoted his life to creating conditions for people to discover themselves, transition liminal spaces and learn in ways which are much more conducive to life now (and in the world of the future) than our conventional approaches to learning. Welcome to the conversation with David Drake.David is the pioneer of two bodies of work — Narrative Coaching and Integrative Development — which share the same philosophical and pedagogical roots and are mutually generative. I've been aware of David's work in Narrative Coaching for around 5 years since being deeply moved by one of his coaching exercises in a training program. I have gravitated more and more to his work — culminating in enrolling in two of his developmental communities at the beginning of this year. This episode was recorded in December 2021 prior to me joining those spaces. I have been even more inspired now that I am in the programs. I feel deeply privileged to have spent more time with David, and I look forward to doing so for what I hope will be years to come. David is a wonderful activator of powerful learning experiences. His work steeped in a brilliant combination of research and evidence-based frameworks, and applied through constant practice in each individual's context. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode:Systems & Cultures- Most of the drivers of behaviour in a workplace have less to do with the people, and more to do with the cultures & systems in which they are working- The systemic and complex nature of the needs we face requires us to work across multiple disciplines and at multiple levels so we don't keep sending changed people back into unchanged environments.- We need to help people place their individual stories and journey within a broader and more inclusive context so they can make sense and meaning in new ways- Developing people is less about teaching with better curricula and more about facilitating with better conversationsHonouring differences- There is a need to create new, larger narratives that will keep us from driving each other further apart- We've over-emphasised our differences and lost much of our sense of the common good and our common humanity- The business models for many of the platforms is based on enraging people, exacerbating differences, and narrowing our focus.Respecting journeys- We need to honour & respect people for who and how they are as the only place to begin- My value is less about telling others what I know and more about coming alongside people and the journey they are already on to help them grow- The big work we need to do is found in from the unknown & the uncertain- The fundamental question in our work is, “What does this person need most right now?”Learning- The need is for more safe places for practice based learning rather than more content- The resolution that someone is seeking is already present- We have to let go of 'we have to study before we do' to free ourselves to learn and adapt faster- We need to free people up for serious play. To play with serious things.Follow David via the links below;www.themomentinstitute.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/davidbdrake/http://amzn.to/2ioo4MJ (Narrative Coaching book)Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. In the final episode of our fourth season, I was delighted to co-create a conversation filled with pragmatism, hope and energy for tackling the major problems that exist in our world today. I was introduced to James McGregor by our very first BWL guest, Paul Dunn, on the basis of our shared passion and believe in systemic transformation.James has been involved in the commercialisation of sustainable innovation and technologies for over 15 years and has a wealth of knowledge on how to identify the crux of a systemic problem, converge stakeholders to address the issue and how to align novel approaches to commercial outcomes. In this conversation we map much of the terrain of James' life which will be familiar to regular listeners – what called him to doing this kind of work (after an early career in the military), how systemic work begins with individuals and organisations figuring out what's most important, and what particular capabilities they can bring to apply to creating a better world. This approach led James into the unanticipated chair of TV show producer, an unintended role which was, as James puts it, simply the right solution to the right problem.James and I look forward to hearing from you via the links below if there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Purpose- Get really clear on why you're doing what you're doing & what's important to your organisation- People think visions are enough. It's not.- I could see all the problems in the world, but didn't see the ideas that can help solve them getting out into the world- Being afraid isn't a bad thing. Fear has a job to do. It's job is to tell you to bring courage to the tableProblems- Look to solve problems at scale - e.g. how do we transform a region to a net zero economy?- Businesses are well placed to be the change-agents that fix these problems- We didn't set out to create a TV show - it ended up as the right solution to the right problem- Build into the storyline is a lot of social science about how you communicate sustainability so it resonates with consumersSustainable business- Doing good can be good for business- People look at sustainability as a cost item instead of a value creator across the business- Sustainability can be a revenue generator, increase profit by reducing operating costs, reduce risk making you more resilient to changes in the business environment & add assets to your balance sheet- Focus on how sustainability can solve problems for key stakeholders within your ecosystem- The sustainability outcome is a consequence of solving the right problem in your business or marketplace- Discovery process: 1 - understand your why, 2 - map ecosystem of business, 3 - gain stakeholder buy-inFollow James via the links below;http://www.bluetribe.co/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesmcgregor73/Watch the TV show James produces – Renovate or Rebuild hereOnline courses on developing and growing sustainable businesses (new courses coming soon) https://bluetribe.thinkific.com/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This conversation is a moving and meaningful one focused on how life lessons from adversity can provide opportunities for transformation and shifts into realisation of our purpose and fullest potential.Rebecca has endured what would be testing circumstances at the best of times, however her greatest challenge came not in isolation but in combination with other significant challenges which would throw many people into turmoil. She navigated these trials with humility, introspection and a devotion to appreciating the small things that become cascades of signals of the kind of work and way of living she is called to.In this conversation we touch on many topics that are close to both our hearts – how to nurture the conditions for inclusion and foster diversity in teams, organisation and broader society, our the adversity we face can lead to our greatest discoveries and personal transformations and the role of leaders in embracing new ways of being that can lead to the creation of more purposeful, values-centred organisations.Rebecca has released an article related to her Survive to Thrive approach, which you can find here - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-shift-from-surviving-thriving-mindset-new-model-rebecca/Rebecca and I look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. Especially openness to learning, earnestness and being nothing like her!- Diverse teams don't always agree, but it's going to be a much richer discussion- A lot of people operate on auto-pilot, and respond to very different people in a very similar wayNew leaders- There's been a shift, we are letting go of the hierarchical model of leadership- Rebecca was always ok with not having the answer- Rebecca is seeing more people leaning into their strengths and bringing their authentic selves to work.- When developing our mindset, we need a deep level of curiosity about how we see the world.- Recognise the gifts from life that invite us to activate our highest potentialMeaning making- Understanding how I create a sense of meaning of the things around us is really important- If we're all moving in the same direction, it's much easier for us to course correct together- We all want to contribute and know why our work matters- If you're able to make a conscious choice to change beliefs you hold, you can move into long-term behaviour change- These experiences become the moments that matter in life and create real meaningThriving- When we're in a survival mindset, we feel helpless & that we can't have a positive influence- Raise awareness of where the dominant locus of control is- I made it a really focus to reimagine what was possible after this challenging experience- I created a life that was more in line with my values- Accepting that adversity is a part of life was really important- Being grateful began with really small things- The kindness you receive from people Rebecca really started noticing- These experiences become the moments that matter in life and create real meaningFollow Rebecca via the links below;https://www.thrivingpeopleconsulting.comLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-christianson/Email rebecca@thrivingpeopleconsulting.comFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Tracy Eames on why we need to focus on meaningful work, and how to bring more meaning through your team

This conversation is one of fellowship between myself and Tracy Eames, a leadership practitioner from the East Coast of the USA with whom I have discovered a great affinity and shared devotion to a foundational column of work for both of us – meaningful work.In Tracy's words, we all spend so much of our time at work with our teams, and all too often people do not find it rewarding. As we all talk about employee engagement and building culture, I often feel like the bigger point is being missed among a checklist of items that don't truly address the challenges we are trying to solve. When we come to work, we want to have a clear role that we know contributes to the success of our team and company i.e. we have meaningful work. We want to be a valued members of teams who are recognized for our successes and given the opportunity for future development growth and a celebrated contribution to each other, our organisation and the greater community we serve.By doing this, Tracy hopes to help people enjoy the long hours we all dedicate to our work, but also hope that our collective efforts help make the world a better place through more thoughtful and innovative solutions that solve our world's most complex challenges.Tracy and I met as fellow podcast hosts in an online collaboration space for podcast producers. This conversation is perhaps not what you might expect in a conversation with the Founder of a Venture Capital Fund. You won't find any mention here of debt-to-equity ratios, asset valuations or how to scale rapidly for a successful sale. What you will find is what Hernan Haro and I must say myself as well, believe is the essence of the kind of ventures that will transform our world. That brilliant, passionate, highly motivated people chose to start ventures that are orientated towards tackling the greatest challenges of our times because they are in love with problem. In this discussion, we explore Hernan's personal journey from software engineer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to co-Founder in Silicon Valley, post-sale into corporate America and back to BA as founder of a social-impact investment fund. He reveals what his experience has taught him about what truly makes a ventures successful – the Founder. Not the idea, not the product, the Founder. Critically, where the Founder comes from, why they have chosen to apply their talents to tackle one of our many wicked problems, and how open they are to learning and continually reframing the solutions they develop to address their chosen challenge. One of the true wonders of our world in this moment is the ability to connect with people across the globe, transcending geographic boundaries and cultural contrasts. I loved this conversation from start to finish. It's been a great pleasure getting to know Hernan over the last 6 months since we met in a professional networking forum, and exploring our many aligned values, believes and shared purpose to play our part supporting those who lead by striving in creating a better world. We look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. You can reach out to either of us via the links below. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Trust- The VC world is driven by trust, passion & aligned mindsets- It took Hernan a long time to accept that faith, trust & confidence are what you need to prevail, knowing you will find a way.Inclusion- The lack of access to information & capital is deeply unfair- The number of deals done with VCs where the Founder does not have a direct connection to the fund is less than 10%- If you're part of the 99% who doesn't have a wealthy friend, your chances of getting funded are really lowDiversity- The importance of diversity is overwhelming- If you ask the same things of the same people, you're going to get the same answers.- We need to listen to the broadest range of people, because anyone can come up with the next big idea- Who is going to solve the next big challenge? Is it going to be someone who has never struggled to make ends meet? It's unlikely.- The ones who are closest to the problems are the ones who understand it best- You need to know how to lead in a diverse environmentLeading- Hernan is investing in the Founder's mission to solve a big problem- They have to be in love with the problem, because the solution is likely to be wrong- Hernan pays a lot of attention the story behind the Founders. Where have they come from & why have they chosen to do this?- Founders need to be humble, so they can ask for help, and be coachable- Everyday Hernan's co-Founder would ask, what did we learn today?- Are potential Founders learners and listeners?- As a Founder, if you look back at the way you are doing things 6 months ago, & you're not at least a little bit embarrassed, you're doing something wrong.Follow Hernan via the links below;https://mrpink.vc/https://www.linkedin.com/in/hernanharo/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Every once in a while you connect deeply, completely and with absolute alignment with someone whose lived experience has been what you aspire to be. To find someone with whom I align so cohesively with living only a few kilometres across the mountains from my home and to have the opportunity to spend time with them and begin to get to know them is both an honour and a revelation.Welcome to the conversation co-created with Mickey Kovari, which we recorded side-by-side in ‘the Shoalhaven studio' in the workspace of my homeplace.Mickey is someone who describes himself as being uncomfortable with leading – despite having held role commonly associated with leadership, most recently as Deputy CEO of the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and currently co-Founder of Native Foodways. Mickey prefers to think of his work as fellowship or community-ship, working in collaboration with First Nations peoples and enterprises. He has worked for a number of Indigenous-led social enterprises over the past 15 years. Our conversation focuses on Mickey's contribution through his work and his experience and insights into the essential need to, and benefits of centring First Nations ways of knowing, doing, and being. We discuss caring for Country and healing Country including regenerative or agroecological farming and land management as well as regenerative resource-use including clean energy and a focus on degrowth, and thus a rethink of capitalism. Caring for Culture, valuing, enriching, and practicing culture as a way to deepen meaning, expression, connection, and belonging and bringing more of a focus on language, art, dance, story and how they lead to wellbeing. Caring for Community, the rise of social enterprise and impact investment as a way to connect large amounts of powerful capital with meaningful and regenerative work and employment that employ community and serve community. Also the ongoing investment in community wellbeing programs, which are always best when linked to regenerative business model or framework so it can be linked in with the production of necessary goods and servicesWe look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. It is distributed and highly contextual.- When you think about leadership, you think about followers. When you think about fellowship, you think about fellows.- It's always about community endorsed leadership without any source of cohesionHere's the list of books we referred to, and the link to the video we created directly after recording this episode in which Mickey introduces each of these works;- Treading Lightly, Tex Skuthorpe & Karl-Erik Sveiby- Fire Country, Victor Stefanson- Dark Emu, Bruce Pascoe- Wandu Mai, Damian Culthard- Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer- The Call of the Reed Warbler- Here's the link to the YouTube ‘Knowledge Quest' live stream in which Mickey adds a little more info about each of the resources we've shared – plus 1 more he snuck in!! - https://youtu.be/t0FaIV2qvkUFollow Mickey via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://nativefoodways.com.au/https://www.instagram.com/nativefoodways/https://www.linkedin.com/company/native-foodwayshttps://www.facebook.com/nativefoodwayshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mickeykovari/https://twitter.com/mickeykovariHere's the link to the fundraising campaign ‘Blakcede' by Waminda as Mickey mentioned right at the end of the show, please consider giving generously to this awesome cause.https://www.chuffed.org/project/support-wamindas-blakcedeFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. It's a very great pleasure to share with you the conversation I co-created with Betsy Reed. Betsy has spent the past 18+ years working as a sustainability expert, running big advocacy campaigns, working for corporates, running her own sustainability consultancy, lecturing, and being invited to write and publish her first book, ‘Communicating Social & Environmental Issues Effectively.' Above all, Betsy is a lifelong social justice activist who wanted to grow up and become a lobbyist (and did). She's spent years honing her skills as a meditation and yoga teacher, as well as embracing and becoming more comfortable in her range of changing identities to give her perspective, empathy and power in herself. Her greatest labour of love to the world right now is her podcast, The Discomfort Practice, which was birthed from the quiet that a 3-month Barcelona covid lockdown created in spring 2020. It's created a space for her to explore and knit together the themes she's been studying, becoming an expert in and teaching for several years, from mindfulness and system change to anti-racism activism and hosting nurturing conversations. As work has started to flow again in 2021, her work has become solely focused on leadership (both self-leadership and more formal Leadership) for a new paradigm, which incorporates diversity & inclusion, holistic sustainability, shifts in power and influence and the pressures of leadership following a pandemic and the unfolding crisis of social inequality and climate change. Betsy's intention is to live a life that inspires others, to do work that inspires others to better lead themselves and others to create big collective change that makes society and the planet a place where all beings can thrive. This conversation is playful, confronting, joyful and (of course) touching on topics that maybe uncomfortable for some, maybe including you.We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation. Betsy is mainly active on Instagram, and Tim primarily hangs out in LinkedIn so drop us a comment or a message in either of those platforms if you'd like.Key out-takes from this episode;Defining Self- Finding real freedom in not being defined by what I do- Finding yourself doing something, something that fits, that meets you where you are and draws you on- Focus on alignment and you end up where you need to be- Worked so hard at being good in the system I was in, and it was never enough- People don't know how to connect to themselves, they don't know how to speak emotion, they have lost touch with themselves as humans in the workplace- To become truly myself I had to break up with old ways of beingReflections on this moment- What I've been training and developing for the last 20 years is now what the world wants- I'm really excited about where we are- What I got was a chance to be still. It was really squirmy at first, uncomfortable as an ambitious, action-orientated person- What a gift to my creativity quiet wasSystems thinking- I no longer have to explain to people that social & environmental is part of sustainability- In order to build sustainable systems they need to be sustainable for human beings, they need to include sustainability, diversity & inclusion and be cognisant of wellbeing- I'm still entwined in these systems which have created our world- Shareholders don't exist as some separate entity to the planet, everything exists as part of the same whole- There's cognitive dissonance everywhere, as people haven't realised they are part of the systems that are breaking them- Anyone who thinks there's nothing they can do doesn't understand their role in the world- I recognise that I need to change. I recognise that I can help groups to change. I recognise that there is a system, and that I and these groups can change the systemTransformation- I think we are mid-breakdown, and I don't believe that is a bad thing- It's going to get worse and it's going to get worse fast- We have to break down old systems- How do we do things imperfectly whilst still making forward progress- What's going on can't keep going on. We're either going to breakdown or breakthrough.- It's not simple, it's going to be complex, it's going to be messyNew Leaders- We need people who focus on understanding inter-being and interconnectedness- That's where we are, still looking for those leaders to emerge- We've seen a lot of leaders who don't have the answers because they can't think outside the paradigm within which they have been operating- Some of them will lead us into the future and some of them will hold us back- We are birthing a new generation of leaders- The people in power are not the ones to lead us there. We are going to see a big shift in who is leading- Because you have agency you have ownership. That means you have opportunity & obligation.- We got this. You've had your turn. Sorry, not enough. Now we got this.Discomfort & Choice- Discomfort is a force for change. A productive thing. It's not something we embrace or look for, yet it is often the thing that gives birth to the greatest innovations.- Use your agency to make choices that make the world better & work for you- Once you begin to think of yourself as a leader it's going to change your lens on life- People are up for being told they are doing wrong, as long as they are told how you can do things better.Follow Betsy via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://www.instagram.com/thebetsyreed/https://www.linkedin.com/in/thebetsyreed/https://twitter.com/thebetsyreedhttps://www.betsy-reed.com/Check out Betsy's podcast ‘The Discomfort Practice' wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This is a fast-paced, concise and direct message from a leader who has devoted their career to enabling leaders to activate their potential and amplify their impact at very early stages in both life and career.Pedro Aguirre personifies an action-based leader, stepping away from the conventional career trajectory his initial studies set for him, and venturing into social enterprise entrepreneurship and social impact stewardship. Having lived and worked across 4 different continents, he has experienced first hand the universality of intentions to create a better world, and learnt how to nurture diversity through collaboration and shared values.I really enjoyed this delightful exchange with a leader who keeps complex concepts to a minimum, focuses on what's most important and shows time and time again that providing access to innovation, pathways to activate potential and taking every opportunity to plant seeds that will germinate to grow the future generation of change-making Better World Leaders is not only possible but necessary to sustain the changes we need in our world.Key out-takes from this episode;Nurturing capability- We are building the next generation of change makers- We try to plant seeds deep so they can go on and make change- We plant the seeds, people make the differenceCollective collaboration- I saw people from all over the world working together towards a shared vision to make the world a better place- Focus on Collaboration. This has been Rebecca Huntley's journey into addressing one of greatest challenges for better world leaders – Climate Change. As one of Australia's preeminent social researchers, it's an absolute honour to bring this co-created conversation to you. This episode is about climate change. It's about where we in Australia are a nation on this issue, where the majority actually lies on what should be done to address the climate crisis, and where our attention, action and influence should be applied to activate the changes we collectively want.We discuss both of our transitions into taking a participative ‘newbie' role in the climate movement, Rebecca's shift to focus her energy, experience and capability towards climate, with a spotlight on her outstanding book ‘How to talk about climate change in a way that makes a difference'.This conversation is fun, deep, funny, confronting, hopeful and compelling. We hope there will be something here for everyone, not only Australians, wherever you current sit on the broad spectrum of views and positions of the climate crisis. We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation. What do I do? Why does it matter?- Action will overcome anxiety- That is a bell that needs to be rung, and then put down so you can get on with the constructive work that needs to be doneFollow Rebecca via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-huntley-81b9013/Twitter @rebeccahuntley2Check out Rebecca's podcast alongside Chris Gambian – COP That!! Stories are change. Stories are us. We change stories and they change us. Claire Marshall's story is one of being, receiving and informing change – and it is one I'm thrilled to be sharing with you in the first episode of our fourth season. This season is all about sustaining change. Once we've done the big leap, made the transformational shift and entered the space of on-going adjustment, the power of story really comes into its own. Here we discuss the role of story, how story told in place can both support and sustain a very particular and beneficial kind of change, how stories can transform us and most importantly of all, create our futures to be those we want, filled with what we know to be most important.Claire is a delight to converse with, a wise and joyful soul who I am deeply honoured to have connected with and so deeply explored the story of story with.We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation.Key out-takes from this episode; The role of story- A story is incredibly powerful, a story frames how we see the world, it frames what we expect, it frames how we see ourselves and it guides our actions- The story we tell ourselves about the future impacts the decisions we take in the present, and the decisions we take in the present impact what kind of future we shape- Stories have an evolutionary advantage. They allow us to learn from other people without having to have those same experiences.- We have been sold a story that we are a product of our productivity and our owned products- We are always looking through our own story out into the world- When you change the story, the story changes you- Understanding a complex system is vital to our survival on the planet. The best way to communicate the relationships in a system is with a storyPlace-based Change- Stories are about relationships. Stories are about the dynamics between people, and between people & place.Transformation- If we want to transform, if we want to evolve, we have to give up what we were, to become what we will be. That requires trust, support networks and stories.- It's not about the stars, it's about the space in between the stars. That's where the potential is.Creating futures- The future is a story, and it's one of the most important stories that we tell- When people have a new story of the future, they start seeing the seeds of that story everywhere. That's empowering, because you can see where you can take action.Follow Claire and be sure to visit The Museum of Futures via the links below:linkedin.com/in/clairefmarshall/www.iflabs.com.au/www.museumoffutures.com.au/Twitter @which_future and @mof_museumFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Welcome to Season 4 of the Better World Leader's podcast!Following right on the heals of the conclusion of Season 3, Doing Better Things - Stories of Transformative Change, we bring you a series of co-created conversations all focused on experiences, approaches and frameworks for sustaining change. We are at a vital moment as a species, one where radical transformation seems the bare minimum requirement, where disruption and adaption have become the norm, and where change-induced burnout is on the increase. How do we, as leaders striving to create a better world, sustain the change that must become not a moment, but expand over months, years, even decades to come? How do our stories become ones not of fleeting individual shifts, but of embedded systemic evolution? What awaits you in Season 4 is a series of conversations with Better World Leaders across the world - in Asia, Europe, the Americas and yes, here in Australia. We are very much looking forward to sharing these stories with you...the first of which will be broadcast on November 8th 2021.

As we wrap up the third season of Better World Leaders, as has become our habit, we pause to reflect briefly on the 10 fascinating, inspiring and transformational conversations we've co-created.In review, 5 emergent themes have become prominent.Purpose & values - in particular how you link your personal purpose & values to creating a better world, and then progress to link your personal purpose & values to that of the organisation you work within. We have also discussed the benefit of reconsidering what success means to us, and also combining passion and purpose to unlock incredible potential and performance.Connection - transformation by connection to self, place and work.Story.- so many examples shared of how story telling has become a vessel through which transformation has occurred for our guests, including me with my story as shared in Ep40, and Anika Molesworth's master class in story telling in Ep41.Change - transformation is the most powerful form of change. This season has focused on the transformational moments, events and shifts that have brought this season's guests to leading to create a better world. We thank all of our guests this season for their time spent with us co-creating the conversations we've shared with you, and for all the incredible work they are doing right now to create our better world.Brendan LoRonan Mac DomnhaillChris AndrewTigrilla GardiniaMelina LipkeiwiczSandra D'SouzaLaura Hamilton-O'HaraPaul GleesonKarren JensenAlice Howard-Vyse (special thanks for hosting the conversation in Ep40)Anika MolesworthWe also thank you for your time, attention and any and all comments you have shared via social media, podcast reviews or direct correspondence. This is a conversation that in some ways I was not expecting, but in other ways I sense I have long been waiting for. I was spell-bound throughout the dialogue with Anika Molesworth, as she shows through her experience, knowledge and actions how we can all influence change, be courageous and do things differently to address climate change and preserve our food systems now and for the future.Anika is a PhD in Agricultural Science, Founder Director of Farmers for Climate Action, Founder of Climate Wise Agriculture, WWF-Australia Governor and the author of the very brilliant ‘Our Sunburnt Country'.Her journey moving as a child from urban Melbourne to extremely rural Broken Hill, in far Western New South Wales Australia, into a farmers boots and hat as a young woman as well as through a Degree in Applied Sciences followed by a Masters in Sustainable Agriculture and the PhD as above. As knowledgeable as Anika clearly is, she is the furthest thing from academia, very much grounded by the red earth of the place she loves, the ailing of the land she has known since a child and her observations of the human-driven changes to landscape, ecology and community. Her gift is that of a brilliant storyteller, one who – in her own words – shows rather than tells, speaks emotively, and walks the courageous steps of a leader who with every breath strives to create a better, more regenerative, place-based world.Anika and I really looking forward to bringing this conversations to you – we hope you enjoy and find both illumination and inspiration throughout.Key out-takes from this episode;Connect to nature- This begins with a sense of wonderment with our surrounds & leaning closely with the natural world- Connecting closely with the landscape continues to drive everything Anika does- Anika's parents encouraged her to turn over the leaves & the rocks, to study this placePlace-based Change- Anika saw the place that she loves deteriorate before her eyes- One of the main changes we need to make is feeling connected to place- Anika could almost reach down, put her hand on the ground and feel her own hear beating, that's how connected she feels with this place- It's important for people to feel connection to place not only for joy & love, but for when they see it ailing- We have to be better observers and recognise what is not going well in the worldNarrative & Storytelling- Change the narrative, not just doom & gloom, share the vision for the better world"- These are the facts, this is what's happening - but told in a way that punches you in the heart- We are the protagonist, we are at the heart of the story, very much creating the next chapter- We need a different approach, changing the stories we are telling- The time for fear based narrative is passing, the time for illumination & inspiration, talking about what is possible & can be done is hereDevelop Capability- How do we give people the capability to describe their visions and convert them into reality?Leading- Be a leader of your own life, and the sphere of influence around you- You can help influence change for the better, because you too are a leader- What we need is more of the verb. What we need is more action. We need more people leading than following.Influence & Change- We are the most trusted messengers to those we care the most for- Don't underestimate the change we can make within our sphere of influence- The essence of everyone is where the change occurs- Changing behaviours of institutions & businesses, and you will charge the behaviours of the people within them- What would we love to create if we dare to imagine this better world we say we want?Follow Anika, connect to Farms for Climate Action and order a copy of Our Sunburnt Country:https://www.anikamolesworth.com/https://twitter.com/AnikaMolesworthhttps://www.instagram.com/anikamolesworth/https://www.facebook.com/anikamolesworthdrhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/anika-molesworth-phdhttps://www.panmacmillan.com.au/author/anika-molesworth/https://farmersforclimateaction.org.au/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face.
