The month of July has come and gone, and as we look back on it we can say that it was a pretty strange and wild month across the board. But as the dog days of summer trek onward, so does this show, with plenty of big convention announcements and dub casts for the roll call of the season - and even some extra bits that show that Crunchyroll is just doing way, way, WAY too much for us to keep track of. There will also be some harsh and profane words spoken about a *certain* individual. Tonight on GeekNights, we review Sonic X (2003). An anime TV series based on Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, adapted poorly by 4kids, it's not too bad. In the news, convention "leaks" are always funny, retroactive editing is becoming more and more common, someone leaked the entire 87 minute animatic of the (sadly) canceled Genndy Tartakovsky Popeye feature, and Anime Matsuri remains one of the worst anime cons in the world, and it's spinning off a "dubbing studio" with a known sex pest.
Summary A lot of manga is ending or going on hiatus this week. If you live anywhere but North America, it's possible your Crunchyroll subscription lowered in price. Anime Matsuri started a dubbing studio. That's...interesting. Anime Matsuri in an anime convention that started in Houston, Texas in 2007 and and is now one of the largest Japanese pop culture events in North America. Hard to believe that it’s been four months since the world, as we knew it, completely changed to a sudden standstill in the wake of… well, everything. Not that you’d notice it in some areas, but trust me, things are still pretty bad out there. It’s also lead to the shutdown and suspension of the anime convention circuit – that includes YOU, Anime Matsuri – but thanks to the power of the internet the shows are still able to go on… if only a bit smaller than usual. But that means you don’t have to worry about crowds this time around, which is always a net positive. So, for this landmark 75th episode of the show, we have a sizable amount of news topics to discuss, including the usual routine of streaming news, upcoming projects, some surprising series coming very soon, and the major announcements coming out of the virtual-slash-online Anime Expo Lite and FunimationCon events, which comes with the worst-kept secret of the summer: THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU. Everyone meet Frankie Empeno. I met Frankie through one of the anime events I went to thanks to friend of the show and past guest Mike Bearis (episode 14). Specifically we're talking about one of the picnics hosted by Anime Matsuri. Frankie is currently a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa majoring in Japanese with a minor in Asian Studies.
