If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points What was the #1 thing you wish you would've known? Not hold myself back due to limiting beliefs or imposter syndrome. What was your background before you become a digital nomad? Cat graduated with a dual major and went to work at a local branding/graphic design agency. Where was the shift to travel and create? Cat took baby steps to start her travels and slowly developed a network of other digital nomads. What kind of safety concerns did you have or precautions did you take? It was a concern in the beginning, but the thoughts are always worse than what actually happens. Take the same precautions you'd take here in the States. Google the place you are going along with the word "scams". What are some tips to overcome your fears and imposter syndrome? Don't self-label yourself. Take baby steps - like sharing what you are confident about or taking a small trip with a friend(s). As you do it more, you get more comfortable. What were some of the baby steps you took to get picked up for licensing? Society6 is one of the industry leaders for Print on Demand. A fine arts painter best known for his award-winning contemporary religious art, J. Kirk Richards urges creators to exercise faith and take the next step forward. In his early teens, Kirk decided to put aside the music lessons he'd been taking his “whole life” and follow a persistent tug toward visual arts. Illustrating the book “The Carpenter of Galilee and the Welcoming Door,” solidified his preference for painting scenes he envisions and feels strongly about. It is always so refreshing to talk to one of our VERY talented artists. Michael Horswill is a life-long student of art, continually exploring and uniting processes and materials to create intricate artwork for gallery exhibitions and larger public installations in the Inland Northwest region. He is a fine artist in the Northwest, and a tenured professor of art at North Idaho College. He is struck by the reoccurring wonder of how curious things have a way of finding one another, as if they are seeking their other life, reminding us through their beauty that everything is deeply connected. He currently exhibits those creations at Art Spirit Gallery. Michael has also created several pieces in the Coeur d'Alene and Hayden public art collections. In this episode, Wendy Klinke reflects on her start-up art instruction and art kit business this past year called Blue Cat Studio. Wendy's love of art and teaching led her in a roundabout way to home-based production, as she created and sold canvas, paint, brush, and instruction kits to her students. Classes, both in-person and online, have created a growing residual business for new kits and supplies. With a lifelong passion for painting and crafts, Wendy studied fine art and architecture in college. Her career veered in a different direction, but she has come back to painting time and again over the past 20 years. It was during the federal government shutdown, in December 2018, that she recommitted to art as a serious focus, promising herself that she would sketch or paint every day. Then, in the fall of 2019, a friend asked Wendy to teach an art class for a Junior League event. Wendy describes the event as a “hot mess” but also a great way to bring disparate people together for a fun activity. The wheels started turning to start a new art instruction business. With infinite energy and creativity, Wendy only needed the business skills to get her new business off the ground. She started a master's program in business, joined a Facebook group to help new art instructors market their paint parties, and launched Blue Cat Studio. With hard work and savvy advice, Wendy was able to create a solid business in just a few months. A crucial part of this success—and the part in which home-based production comes in—was the creation of art kits that Wendy made and sold to her customers. Find out in this episode why Wendy decided to make these art kits in the first place and how the combination of instruction and production has been so vital to her students' enjoyment and her early business success. You can learn more about Blue Cat Studio, check out Wendy's online classes, and purchase art kits at https://www.facebook.com/bluecatstudioart/, https://www.instagram.com/bluecatstudioart/, https://www.facebook.com/groups/letspaintwithbluecat/. Welcome back to Cutting Chai Stories with Jayati Vora. In this episode, I speak with multidisciplinary artist Racquel Keller, who participated in my monthlong writing #onestoryaday writing challenge in July in the Cutting Chai Stories Facebook group. Except, instead of responding to my writing prompts, she chose to write a poem a day that was inspired by a color. She also overlaid the words on a carefully chosen image, and helped us interpret the poem through her artist's eye. She reads one of her poems from that challenge, Rose Madder. Racquel talks about her art being inspired by writing, and vice versa, and offers her top tip for seeing the world around you as an artist. PLUS, she has not one but TWO art-inspired writing prompts this week. Speaking of which, I have my own word + image collaboration to announce this week -- a series called Backscatter that features the street photography of @hersh.img with my stories, all on Instagram. Check them out on my feed @jayativora. Did any of the pairings surprise you? Which one's your favorite? Write and let me know. The artists Racquel mentioned on the show can be found here: Gustave Moreau's abstract preparatory drawings: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS809US809&sxsrf=ALeKk034r6si4fQjbgnJdVEPQ6bMgD1yNQ:1605038991679&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=gustave+moreau+art+abstrait&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjY5suX5PjsAhWhmOAKHZrcCjoQjJkEegQIBBAB&biw=1396&bih=656&dpr=2.75 For active backgrounds, look at the works of Walt Kuhn's "Plumes," Franz Kline, Clyfford Still and John Singer Sargent. More about Racquel Keller: Racquel Keller is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is found in many forms, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and assemblage. She constructs imagery inspired by her collection of natural specimens and vintage objects. These seemingly disparate pieces are put together to tell a story that captures the feeling of nostalgia these objects evoke. She works as an Art Instructor at the Greenbelt Community Center, the College Park Arts Exchange, and for select workshops at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. She regularly offers classes and workshops in a variety of mediums and subjects. She actively exhibits her work in the DC Metropolitan area and is a current Artist in Residence at The Greenbelt Community Center (Maryland, USA). What is it like to move from working and earning a living as a freelance artist and begin a career as an art instructor? What impact does that transition have in the creative process? My guest, Jane Davies was kind enough to open up and share parts of her journey and how she left her work as a freelance artist behind to throw herself into the role of an art instructor. Jan has some helpful insights and lessons to share about her journey and how she grew and evolved as an artist over time in light of this pivotal point her her career. It was a joy to have Jane share her story and I know artists like you will get a lot of enjoyment from hearing her unique perspective. Embracing the role of Art Instructor Jane Davies spent over fifteen years creating production pottery and taking on other roles as a freelance artist. She eventually got to a point in her journey where she didn’t want to make art that way any longer. Now, she focuses less on selling her work, though that would be nice, she has turned a lot of her energy toward her role as an art instructor. Talking with Jane, I could really get the sense that this is where a lot of her passion and excitement are rooted. It was great to hear Jane’s angle on this subject and to hear where she is spending her time expressing herself. The Need for Community Among Artists Do you have a community of fellow artists that you connect? Where do you turn for inspiration and camaraderie? Have you been looking for that missing piece on your creative journey? In our conversation, my guest Jane Davies and I discuss the impact that being in community with fellow artists can have on your own creative output. While each person’s journey will have its own variables, don’t neglect this important aspect in the life of an artist. Even if you can’t be part of an artistic community locally, find other ways to connect either digitally in a community like this one or find ways to meet up once or twice a year with other artists. What steps are you taking to stay connected to a creative community? Art is Never Easy Have you ever had someone tell you that art is easy? How did you react? While there may be moments of inspiration where the creativity just flows through your fingertips, by and large, the work of an artist is far from “easy.” In my conversation with artist Jane Davies, we discuss this topic and misnomer that once you find your “voice” as an artist, the work becomes easy. Jane shares her experience as an art instructor and assumptions she encounters from young artists who are longing to find their voice. While techniques and concepts might become easier to hone and master, the work of an artist will always include striving, struggling, and challenge. What has been your experience? Do you resonate with Jane’s perspective? A Commitment to Constant Creation What habits and routines have helped you succeed as an artist? Do you take comfort in rituals and processes? How do you tap into a current of motivation and inspiration that can keep you focused on the work that you create? My guest, Jane Davies shared with me that it’s her commitment to constantly create that keeps her focused and drawn back to the canvas over and over again. Jane also gives herself the permission to just create, she doesn’t hold herself to a perfectionist standard, in these sessions she gives herself the freedom to just create, it doesn't have to be perfect or “good.” What are your takeaways from Jane’s story? Outline of This Episode [1:30] I introduce my guest, Jane Davies. [2:30] Jane talks about how she got started as an artist. [14:00] A pivotal moment in Jane’s career. [17:00] Jane talks about her role as an art teacher. [21:00] Mistakes Jane made as a teacher. [24:30] Positive experiences as a teacher. [30:30] Art is never easy. Tonight's special guest is Kimberly Toth-Lajzer from North Carolina, an Art Instructor at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton who runs a program described at Art4aPurpose.Org. She's also the author of a new series of books using Art to help children connect to their feelings, emotions and instincts about sexual abuse. She grew up in what she describes as a "typical, wonderful, normal household," her father a firefighter, her mother a homemaker. The four kids enjoyed a solid middle class upbringing. At least that's how it appeared on the outside. But behind closed doors things were different. "We constantly fought. My father and I got along like oil and water. My parents were Alcoholics, and my dad loved to keep my mom sedated. I thought the emotional abuse, neglect, and occasional physical abuse was all I endured. I was proud of myself the night I finally stood up to him. I stood nose to nose to him even after he flipped over the kitchen table." Escaping the family by going off to college, she quickly established a tumultuous relationship. "We went 5 years without speaking." She married and moved to North Carolina at 23, an instant family in tow. Years went by before a series of memories started coming back. "I was 43, working with a special needs boy that found my body voluptuous. That was the end of my denial." There was no turning back. "My husband looked at me and said, 'For the first time in our lives I finally understand you.' And he helped Kimberly me get help. She went through counseling, and began to use her Art to survive. "I was trying to figure out the implications of my sexual abuse, I did not want it to have happened in vain. I began focusing on how I could use my experiences to make a positive difference."
