In this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast, we welcome back Gina Jurlando to the show. You might remember her when we last had her on to talk about the Yeasty Boys, the community surf group she founded to help make surfing more welcoming, inclusive, and supportive for everyone looking to paddle out.Since then, Gina has continued doing what she does best—bringing people together. Whether it's through surfing, community events, environmental initiatives, art, film, or simply creating spaces where people can connect, she's become one of the driving forces behind the ever-evolving culture of Rockaway Beach.Today she's back to talk about two exciting new projects. First, the inaugural Rockaway Surf Film Festival, a new celebration of surf culture, storytelling, creativity, and the unique community that has grown around the ocean here in New York. And second, Jupiter Club, a new community-focused surf club, co-working space, event venue, and gathering place that is already becoming a hub for surfers, artists, entrepreneurs, and locals alike. Jupiter Club was created to carry forward the spirit of community that has always made Rockaway special, while creating new opportunities for people to connect, collaborate, and share ideas. From building one of the most welcoming surf communities on the East Coast to helping launch new cultural institutions right here in Rockaway, Gina continues to prove that surfing is about much more than waves—it's about the people you meet along the way.She is our guest today on this episode of The Swell Season Surf Podcast.Follow The Jupiter Club on Instagram: jupiterclubnycYou can find more information on the club and The Rockaway Surf Film Festival here: https://www.jupiterclubnyc.com/ The Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. Each day, millions of doctors write prescriptions for drugs intended to help their patients. But what if many of our modern health ailments, like depression, anxiety, and chronic pain, would benefit as much, if not more, from a social prescription? What if nature, art, movement, and service could reduce our symptoms, decrease doctor visits, and improve our health? These are questions Julia Hotz set out to answer. Julia is author of the book, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging. By sharing research findings, as well as people's stories from around the world, we get to see a whole other side of medicine. After reading her book, I'm more convinced than ever we need to seek out and prioritize healthy social time. Nestled in the heart of Winchester, Virginia, Old Town is experiencing a renaissance—one fueled by creativity, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for local history. In a recent conversation on "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael sat down with Brady Cloven, executive director of Friends of Old Town, and Jill Savory, the passionate founder of Typewriter Studio, to explore the vibrant changes sweeping through this historic district. Typewriter Studio, once a humble typewriter repair shop, now stands as a testament to the power of reinvention. Jill Savory, a former elementary art teacher, shared her journey from the classroom to entrepreneurship, driven by a desire for flexibility and a calling to foster creativity in her community. With encouragement from her husband, Jill transformed the old shop into a welcoming space for art classes, workshops, and gallery shows, catering to all ages and skill levels. “Art is part of being a human person,” Jill reflected, emphasizing the studio's mission to make art accessible and meaningful for everyone. The conversation also spotlighted the broader movement to revitalize Old Town. Brady detailed initiatives like Main Street Masterpieces, which turns vacant storefronts into mini art galleries, and the upcoming public mural project, designed to celebrate literacy and family-friendly themes. These efforts, he explained, are about more than beautification—they're about building connections, supporting local artists, and inviting residents and visitors alike to experience the district's unique charm. Events like First Fridays, with their rotating themes and live performances, further energize the area, drawing crowds to local businesses and fostering a sense of community pride. Both Jill and Brady highlighted the collaborative spirit among Winchester's artists and entrepreneurs, noting that competition has given way to mutual support and shared excitement for the town's future. As Old Town Winchester continues to evolve, spaces like Typewriter Studio and programs led by Friends of Old Town are proving that art and community go hand in hand. Through their vision and dedication, they are not only preserving the district's rich heritage but also ensuring it remains a lively, inclusive, and inspiring place for generations to come.

I feel like what he's done to me for years will never be finished. This is pertaining to areas I refuse to go to, to begin my delivery shifts. Need a creative outlet? Try an art class! Rexburg's Art Specialist Twyla Mahelona offers classes for all ages and skill levels.
Growing up, Joanne Robinson was creatively encouraged in primary school and loved to draw for hours at home. However, her passion for art was dampened when she entered secondary school and was told by an art teacher that she wasn't very good. This negative feedback led Joanne to believe that she didn't have a talent for art, and she abandoned her artistic pursuits. Joanne joined the Royal Air Force and years later, while recuperating with a broken back, learned to paint and rediscovered her love for art.Joanne learnt that drawing and painting can be taught, and the importance of practice. Just like musicians are encouraged to practice regularly to improve their craft, artists also need to dedicate time and effort to honing their skills. Joanne's initial motivation to start The Little Art School stemmed from her own experience of how drawing and painting changed her life. She wanted to provide the same opportunity for others who may have doubted their abilities. By offering structured classes for both children and adults, Joanne and her business partner Melissa created a space where individuals could learn and grow at their own pace. hey guys welcome to the chat Club um a bit of news actually so I've been told by my uh by spreer that who host my um my podc this podcast all my podcasts actually that I'm not allowed to do music so as a musician this it's been a bit of a blow so I haven't update uploaded anything for a couple of days so I'm not allowed to play you any of my lovely piano music I'm not allowed to play you any ringtones I'm not allow I can talk about music but I can't actually play it so I can't teach so it's been a real blow actually and I've really been struggling to think you know how do you how do you sort of change a whole podcast I've been doing this podcast for a very long time um so there'll be a few changes I'm afraid I might even change the name of it actually I'll probably have I think I'll have to I can't I can't not do free ringtones and have a podcast called free ringtones can I so lots and lots of changes I'm afraid and I I do hope that you'll stick with us um I'll only be up to updating a couple times a week two or three times a week um because guys I've got very exciting news actually one door closes another one opens we set up the TA Academy of Arts taay Club Academy of Arts um which is now live on the site official launch isn't until Saturday members only I'm afraid we've already got four five I think six members we've already got which is very very exciting and we haven't even started yet so I'll be doing live art so I realize it's a little bit different to music and you may not be interested in it but truly honestly it's a totally wonderful platform that we've managed to develop in quite a short space of time actually now I've got a lot of videos thousands of them on YouTube so it's not too much of a stretch for me to formalize everything into a much more streamlined platform that actually specifies the genre that I'm working and I think it's going to work really really well because the thing is when you do all sorts everything I think people do get a bit confused so the website which I have been slaving over for the last four days um along with lots of art actually because if you go along to my devant tart you'll be able to see all the artworks but the um the website I'm hoping I'm hoping I mean you know what you think in the morning looks really good by bedtime you can't you think oh God that's awful so it's been really really hard but the over I mean generally speaking there'll be three three different age brackets that I'll Target but you know these things overlap that's a problem isn't it so the and and the little you can't join unless you're 18 anyway so most of it going to be mom supervised or dad supervised so you know everyone's going to be watching everything so it's all really familyfriendly so there will be no expletives and there will be no nudes so I've closed down the only fans news nude gallery as well um we there was a lot of art from the last well you know I'm an artist I've been painting nudes for many years you can't really sell them anymore and I thought well let's let's go the other route which is setting up the rat gang crew um who are who they've proved so popular on De into art really really popular so I'll be doing one of those a day one um illustration and I'll be sharing those and I'll be talking about how I make these illustrations on my iPad on the TV show and that'll be for the mid it's a sort of mini midi and Maxis is how I'm going to describe them so the minis are roughly sort of 3 to six maybe maybe 3 to 5 because it's very it's a big gap isn't it from 3 to six um but as I say lots of O overlap then the mides which will be you know younger younger no older children and how would I describe it even you know maybe 10 to no 8 to 13 something like that I've already missed out three years so ult guys so difficult um so you see what I mean I I don't want to overs specify the ideal age I think that's a big mistake I've seen other places do that I mean what I could do is I could recommend an age in the description of each video and say you know roughly but of course I'm a grandma and I don't see the kids every day so I don't know what sort of age specific projects would be you know but hopefully you'll be able to sort of you know follow things they're all going to be on the same block the same video at the moment the same show I should say the same TV show at the moment but eventually they'll all have their own different ones okay um and eventually they will be you know linked to a YouTube but they'll all be unlisted just because YouTube is faster than the you know the people that are streaming me um and I that's a bit I think so anyway it's a little bit longer to upload or a little bit longer to load rather the website and I've had to really stream it all back on um the mobile anyway I'm talking giberish because I'm absolutely exhausted and I just stopped myself from swearing there now that we've gone all kid-friendly so there's nothing on the site that is inappropriate for children obviously some of the artwork that I'll be doing for the midies might involve for example monsters I did um a series of monsters last week for my Deviant Art and there kind they're cartoons but you know they may not be appropriate for a child of delicate um Constitution especially at bedtime do you know what I mean screaming because they're possessed by um one of my drawings so we don't want that so always I think I would recommend that there's an adult overseeing what the kids are watching on the videos but generally speaking you know really I'm all focused on creating a site that's filled with love um a friendly Grandma site that is caring and kind and passing on the the knowledge that's the way I'm going with this um and I'm just sorry that I can't give you any free ringtones on the podcast however all the free ringtones are still available um so that's really good isn't it and well that's it that's the update so see you over on the site I do hope ta- tell. club and yeah how exciting a new I mean it's 20 no $20 so quite cheap really um a month but you know that's 24/7 lessons and I'm uploading every day really cool classes really really nice and it it's specifically with children in mind so there we go I hope you hope you can join up and I hope you can be impressed by all the things that I do now actually I will mention that there's lots of adult stuff as well so I'm recycling old vinyl records um actually I've got a a thing that you can do with vinyl records in the microwave I'm going to do that for you guys um so lots of crafty stuff on on on its way and a bit of DIY all that sort of thing you know um oh it's so exciting I just can't wait to be honest plus loads of other perks lots of things and if you want to set up your own channel create your own channel um there's a Creator uh plan that you can sign up to I can't remember I think that's the same price actually and that is where you can start your own blog and create creative people only no adult content and or start your own TV channel so really really exciting um and there are lots and lots and lots of free channels on the website loads of them it's only the academy that you have to pay for and really think of it as a bit of a private school you know it's a bit really interesting for people who are Keen to educate as well as have some fun I mean I do it with fun in mind but don't forget all my cello lessons are on there as well and all my piano lessons so yeah how exciting can't wait see you see you Saturday I hope at 10:00 a.m. for the big launch

Many people jump into a job thinking they will love it forever. And all too often, they end up working with unpleasant people or just discover it wasn't their true life's calling. But what if the most unexpected twists and turns could transform into the top things that make you smile? I had an insightful and always entertaining conversation with Kayla Jimenez, Partner at US IP Attorneys, P.C., to learn her take on this question. After growing up in a small town of only 220 residents, she packed her bags and moved to San Diego for university—never looking back. From taking art classes in Italy to working in Biotech, always taking the untraditional path helped Kayla find her true calling in practicing law. After growing up in a small town of only 220 residents, she packed her bags and moved to San Diego for university—never looking back. From taking art classes in Italy to working in Biotech, always taking the untraditional path helped Kayla find her true calling in practicing law. But would the cranky, rude stereotype many lawyers possess cloud her dream? Here's how this high-achiever hacked her way into her dream job, worked with amazing free-thinkers, and eventually bought the law firm. In this episode, we reveal how Kayla utilizes these essential points of the Do The Thing formula: Surrounding yourself with like-minded people Thinking outside the box and being resourceful Risk assessment Studying under mentors Making it fun Overcoming fear Building a solid work ethic Do you need an untraditional IP attorney or just want to learn more about Kayla? In this episode, Wendy Klinke reflects on her start-up art instruction and art kit business this past year called Blue Cat Studio. Wendy's love of art and teaching led her in a roundabout way to home-based production, as she created and sold canvas, paint, brush, and instruction kits to her students. Classes, both in-person and online, have created a growing residual business for new kits and supplies. With a lifelong passion for painting and crafts, Wendy studied fine art and architecture in college. Her career veered in a different direction, but she has come back to painting time and again over the past 20 years. It was during the federal government shutdown, in December 2018, that she recommitted to art as a serious focus, promising herself that she would sketch or paint every day. Then, in the fall of 2019, a friend asked Wendy to teach an art class for a Junior League event. Wendy describes the event as a “hot mess” but also a great way to bring disparate people together for a fun activity. The wheels started turning to start a new art instruction business. With infinite energy and creativity, Wendy only needed the business skills to get her new business off the ground. She started a master's program in business, joined a Facebook group to help new art instructors market their paint parties, and launched Blue Cat Studio. With hard work and savvy advice, Wendy was able to create a solid business in just a few months. A crucial part of this success—and the part in which home-based production comes in—was the creation of art kits that Wendy made and sold to her customers. Find out in this episode why Wendy decided to make these art kits in the first place and how the combination of instruction and production has been so vital to her students' enjoyment and her early business success.
