We are back after winter break and kicking this year off with a discussion about Patreon for Artists and for our podcast. Do you have a Patreon? Tell us about your Patreon and what you are doing and we may give you a shoutout and share your info! We'd love to hear from you, email us at hello@artistssoar.com or DM us on Instagram at @artistssoarpodcast If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Stephanie was doing the research: how to fill the gap between being small and the large artists/podcasters to gain income? The threshold of when to get a Patreon, again, falls to the numbers: you need a lot of fans/followers before it is worth the time and money to do a Patreon. 2-3% will convert from one platform to the next. So focus on the 1st platform before moving onto another. The marketing of the Patreon and providing value on Patreon is the equivalent effort to other marketing avenues. Until, add a donation button to your website, or add a donation button to your newsletter. Do you have a Patreon? We are bringing you the best of and most listened to episode while we are vacationing during the holidays. We'll be back with you before you know it! Until then, enjoy this episode where we chat with Cat Coquillette about her journey from a graphic designer to a nomadic, licensed artist. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points What was the #1 thing you wish you would've known? Not hold myself back due to limiting beliefs or imposter syndrome. What was your background before you become a digital nomad? Cat graduated with a dual major and went to work at a local branding/graphic design agency. Where was the shift to travel and create? Cat took baby steps to start her travels and slowly developed a network of other digital nomads. What kind of safety concerns did you have or precautions did you take? It was a concern in the beginning, but the thoughts are always worse than what actually happens. Take the same precautions you'd take here in the States. Google the place you are going along with the word "scams". What are some tips to overcome your fears and imposter syndrome? Don't self-label yourself. Take baby steps - like sharing what you are confident about or taking a small trip with a friend(s). As you do it more, you get more comfortable. What were some of the baby steps you took to get picked up for licensing? Society6 is one of the industry leaders for Print on Demand. Identify the metrics for success, like money, and the brand power that Society6 has with the search engines. By saturating Society6 with her work, she is easily found by brands. What strategy would you recommend to artists now that Society6 is oversaturated? Try many and see what will work, then focus on the one that works for you. Consider the audience that the Print On Demand site focuses on. Review the top-selling designs to see if your artwork. What are some recommended Print on Demand locations you recommend? In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie just chat about why and how Stephanie does marketing research before she starts an art project, a blog post etc., and the intention behind painting collections. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Some keyword research tools Stephanie uses: Sale Samurai, MerchInformer, Ubersuggest, (affiliate links). Research how other artists prepare for collections. Although not specifically stated: you can research other artists without comparing your art to their art - instead compare the processes. Remember who you are trying to marketing to. Talk about it in terms of how it can mean something to them, so they can relate to the piece. Not every piece has research ahead of time, sometimes it is just about the painting... In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie just chat about whether they use or view art as therapy. In Jules' case she didn't turn to art to help her healing. The point of the episode to say that it is ok to NOT turn to art for therapy - there is absolutely no right way to grieve or handle what is going on in your mind and body. Find your way. We'd love to hear what worked for you. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points During Julie's cancer treatments she didn't find art as an escape because of her art generally comes from a place of joy. Stephanie finds art as her way of expressing her views of the world. Some of the things you can do you don't have to publish. For those going through something, please talk with someone to process. In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie chat about ways they are staying motivated with specific techniques and mindset that we and others have. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Sometimes a deadline is motivation - like Jule's advent calendar with coloring pages. check it out here: https://www.juliemstudios.com/day-02 Going to a group social painting can be motivating! Which is an artist date (taken from Artist Way,) Take on one thing at a time until it is a habit, then add another. It takes 45 days to make something into a habit (not 21 days). Set a timer - Pomodoro technique - to stay motivated using a timer to work on x for a certain amount of time. Stephanie uses Insight Timer App - Workplace - Get Into Focus - Length, then pick the time. Music can help motivate too! but be respectful of those around you. The people who succeed are the ones who don't give up. Know what you are doing matters. And proving people wrong. All "failures" are a learning pivot. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Stephanie is having an exhibition at Lowe Mill from 11/22 - 2/3/2024. The original concept had evolved, as did I and thankfully Lowe Mill was accepting of this change. Stephanie's approach to a painting is more subconscious work so she isn't able to create specific pieces for a specific subject. Is that something you can do? Life forced us to think about and pray about life as our best friend Jules McCullough was diagnosed with cancer. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points How do you restart when you feel like you've lost your momentum. In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie talk about AI. There is a controversy between AI and Artists, but there is a great opportunity to use AI to help artists (really anybody) work smarter, not harder. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Stephanie has been using AI as a seed to generate an idea, but it needs your voice from there. AI is a great productivity tool. Stephanie uses/has used Jasper.ai to aid with blog posts, the AI feature in Canva for Press Release statements, grant statements, SocialBee for posts, and Tubebuddy to aid with SEO and Title generation. Check what you create in AI in plagiarism, Grammarly has a plagiarism checker. https://www.grammarly.com/plagiarism-checker Another podcast Ecommerce Alley by Josh Coffey has a great podcast to gain ideas for Facebook ads and how AI can aid your ad development. Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie chat with Susan Hensel who has been an artist for the last 50 years as a seasoned fiber artist who has seen a lot of changes for women! From being ignored by professors in the 1950s to now where women are still balancing the multiple roles that have vs. the ones they want. In this episode, we embrace all the wisdom from Susan Hensel in dealing with fractured times and staying motivated in a man's world. Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie chat with star Spoonflower seller, Carrie Cantwell who share with us her experiences on how to succeed on spoonflower. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points Carrie is another lovely artist who took a leap of faith to leave a stable job to create something of her own. She discovered Spoonflower as a result of wanting material to cover her chairs! She loved the quality! She was buyer and became a contributor. Spoonflower is a great place to get your patterns seen and get found through the challenges. To help get found, research your tags to see what is doing well and why - all this is available on spoonflower. Evaluate what tag is selling. Spoonflower is how Peppermint Magazine found Carrie. The key is to create the work you want to create and use the same work to create different colorways. Learned how to master Photoshop and keyboard shortcuts to speed up the process. Carrie's class available on skillshare is fantastic to learn how to create a half-draw pattern in 15 minutes. It didn't start off that quickly, experience and looking for shortcuts is key to speed. Ordering proofs from spoonflower is a must to ensure your patterns are working seamlessly. This ensures integrity for the customer. To help keep down the cost for the proofs, Carrie will wait until she has 42 designs and then will create a cheater quilt/patchwork print. She'll use the patchwork quilt as gift wrap! What a great idea! Raspberry Creek is another fabric print-on-demand site. Benjamin Moore and Pantone have colors of the year to help you find the colorways for trends. WHEW! In this episode, we chat about the Power of Saying No. We found that when you say no to what doesn't serve your "why", you'll experience an increase in energy and you'll protect your energy to enable you to drive toward your why! Join in on the conversation with Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie two other podcasters and artists: Jessica Libor from the Inspired Painter Podcast and Katrina Berg from the Candy Colored Studio If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key Talking Points When you say no you are preserving your energy to work toward your why. Be intentional with what your why is and preserve your time toward what matters to you. And say no to what doesn't serve your why. Saying no is a way of creating boundaries. You don't want your excellence to suffer. When you spread yourself thin you aren't able to produce the level you want. Sometimes it is a hard choice. Jessica talks about How to increase your energy. trampolining - she listens to some great music and bounces for 15 minutes to gain a ton of energy. dancing - energizes Jessica for days. Rachel discovered that what feeds your soul feeds you energy. Jules loves to do headstands to get her blood flowing differently. Called Feetup. What questions should you consider when you need to decide yes or no? What does your body say? What is in your gut? Will this expand your experience? Take a minute "that's an interesting opportunity, let me get back to you in the morning". How much energy is the client going to zap from you? Do you need to add a PETA fee (pain in the 'A' fee :) ) Do you like the way the relationship is going? Set standards as to who you will take on as a client. Always say no to art scams. Those fabulous emails we all have seen "I can send you a check". "stormed onto your artwork"... Give it a timeline for what you'll focus on and evaluate it at the end of the timeframe. There may be some trial and error. Saying no to lowering your prices. Provide direction to your end-of-year sale/offers. As an artist, is our job to educate our collectors. Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie have a very special guest with them, Audra King from She Loves Her Biz to chat with us about how to find the fun in your creative business again!! If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key talking points: Don't follow the 'shoulds'. And what are some ways to focus on what's important to you and not the 'shoulds'. Omit the noise: perhaps take a break from Instagram or other social media. To find the fun: the first thing to consider is what you want and then balance your schedule around that. For Finding the fun in Marketing Audra recommends Brit Kolo's resource called "Marketing for your Personality Type". Julie hates Networking who is an INTJ. So it is great to find things that DON'T work and then work towards what would work based on her personality. Stephanie is an ENTJ - does a weekly artisan market show where she paints and talks about the paintings and pets. And while she's there collects email addresses to continue the relationship. She doesn't have joy in Instagram but does in Facebook. Rachel enjoys Facebook Group because of the interactions and Google Ads where there are no interactions. For the negative comments, be above and beyond by providing the information or a link to the answer that was previously provided. How to make sales fun? The key question is: Does the energy you are putting in equal the compensation you receive? If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com Key talking points: Stephanie: her personality requires her to be doing something all the time, but she does find she procrastinates on painting because of potential interruptions Jule: if she is the one setting the deadlines, she'll easily push it off. But if she owes it to someone, she'll stay on task. This is where I coach or accountability can help you not push off the deadlines that move you forward. Rachel's procrastination comes from going down rabbit holes, and squirrel moments. Draw out the 4 quadrants to determine what is important and urgent to meet the goals (Urgent-Important, Urgent - Not important, Not Urgent - Important, Not Urgent - Not important) Advice: Flip the narrative - make a goal of nos instead of yeses. Take the shots like Michael Jordan. Advice: Take imperfect actions.
