This episode features a local Oakes father/son duo and we're so excited to introduce them to you! Shawn and Aiden Ulmer of the Angry Beaver Lodge share the story of a third-generation restaurant business and the unexpected path that brought Aiden back to Oaks. They discuss generational transitions, evolving bar culture, and the role local businesses play in creating community. This is a conversation about what draws people back to small towns and the active role communities can play in facilitating it.  About Shawn and Aiden: Shawn grew up in Valley City, ND. He fell in love with the restaurant industry while helping at the steakhouse his parents owned for most of his childhood. His entire life has been spent in the service industry. His love of food, drinks, and people makes him a natural. This fall marks his 25th year as the owner of the Angry Beaver Lodge in Oakes.  On the off chance that Shawn is not at work prepping, creating new menu items, chatting up the customers, or catering a wedding reception, you will find him cheering on his beloved MN Vikings, sitting in a deer stand with his bow at the ready, or spoiling his granddaughters. Shawn's youngest son, Aiden (aka Chili), accepted the position of Front of the House Manager at the Angry Beaver Lodge this past September. Aiden was born and raised in Oakes; attended college at NDSU and the U of M. He spent a few years living in Fargo and in the heart of New York City, and loved having an abundance of entertainment, eateries, & nightlife at his fingertips. Like his dad, he grew up in the restaurant. Chili shares many of his dad's traits, including his father's deep voice (people love to hear his "Shawn impersonation") and his love of conversation, which makes Aiden a natural behind the bar.  The transition back to Oakes and small town life was made easier by the number of friends who had also returned, the welcoming and progressive community, and the short distance to visit his brother & nieces.  His love of travel & exploration has already taken him all over the world; if he's not busy whipping up a new cocktail recipe, he's undoubtedly planning his next trip.  In this episode, we cover: How a third-generation restaurant family is navigating a new generational transition. Why younger generations are going out less (and what bars and restaurants are doing about it.) How craft cocktails, events, and experiences are replacing traditional bar culture. What actually brings young people back to small towns. Why community gathering places like restaurants matter more than we think. The summer growing season is well underway across the upper Midwest, and the team at America's Land Auctioneer has been traversing North Dakota and Minnesota to check crop conditions firsthand. Host Jack Pifer welcomes Kevin Pifer and land manager Tyler Burby to share their observations from recent field tours, where timely rains have created promising conditions despite early season challenges from windstorms. What emerges throughout their conversation is a fascinating glimpse into the interconnected world of agricultural land markets, auction methodologies, and the unique culture that surrounds rural America. Tyler reports that while corn and soybeans started slower than usual, the recent heat has accelerated growth dramatically. The crops' resilience mirrors the adaptability of the auction industry itself, which continues to evolve in response to technological change.Kevin offers a passionate defense of live auctions in an era when many competitors have moved entirely online. "The online is the end of the line for an auction company," he asserts, explaining that a good auctioneer can add $300-400 per acre to farmland values. Data from Pifer's recent sales supports this approach – while 51% of their sales now come from online bidders, the remaining 49% represents in-person buyers who value the traditional auction experience. This hybrid model, combining live auctioneers with simultaneous online bidding platforms, has become Pifer's signature approach. The conversation takes an unexpected detour into coffee culture when Kevin and Tyler share insights from their visit to Alley Beans, a specialty coffee roastery in Valley City. The parallels between carefully sourced coffee beans and meticulously marketed farmland aren't lost on the team, who appreciate the craftsmanship behind both. Tyler even cites research suggesting regular coffee drinkers may live 19% longer, adding scientific weight to their morning ritual.Looking ahead, the fall auction calendar is filling rapidly, with the Western Dakota Land Auction Event anchoring October's offerings and eight significant auctions already scheduled for September 22-24 alone. As Kevin predicts Federal Reserve interest rate cuts by year-end, the stage seems set for increased agricultural investment opportunities. For farmers, investors, and land enthusiasts alike, this episode offers valuable insights into where the market is heading and why the human element remains irreplaceable in land transactions.Follow at www.americalandauctioneer.com and on Instagram & FacebookContact the team at Pifer's

As the summer of 1902 ended, three brothers left their home in Minnesota and headed west. The oldest brother had worked for several years on a farm near Courtenay during harvest season. In 1902, he was joined by his two younger brothers. Raymon, Harold, and W.C. Sweet left Fargo one August evening and walked to the Milwaukee Crossing, where they planned to camp while waiting for a train to Valley City.

Isaiah tells the people of Judah that Egypt will be absolutely no help against Assyria. God's people would be foolish to put their trust in men rather than the LORD. He is the true God who comes down to protect His people, so that they can return to Him even after they revolted against Him by their idolatry. Although Egypt's help against Assyria is nothing, the LORD promises that He will bring the Assyrian threat against His people to an end.  Rev. Philip Zielinski, pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Valley City, OH, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 31:1-9.  "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 1-39. The prophet proclaims to the people of his day and throughout history that the Holy One of Israel alone is exalted. Those who put their trust in the strength of man will be brought low, but those who trust in the LORD will see that He is their Immanuel. Jesus is God with us who reigns over the kingdom of God forever and ever! Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

At around 9:00 PM on September 13th, 2006, a college student walked towards her friend's apartment in the small town of Valley City, North Dakota. She walked up the steps and was about to knock on her friend's door, when she was hit with this really powerful chemical smell. She looked around wondering where the smell was coming from, and that's when she realized it was coming from her friend's apartment. More confused than worried, the friend knocked on the door, but there was no answer. So she reached down and tried the handle, and it was unlocked, so she opened the door. And when she looked inside, she began to scream. For 100s more stories like these, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
