Inge Auerbacher is a notable Holocaust survivor whose story has been featured in several podcasts and interviews. Born in 1934 in Kippenheim, Germany, Inge was only a young child when the horrors of the Holocaust unfolded. Her story is particularly powerful because it shows the experience of the Holocaust through the eyes of a child. In 1942, at the age of 7, Inge and her family were deported to the **Terezin concentration camp** (Theresienstadt) in Czechoslovakia. Terezin was presented by the Nazis as a "model" ghetto, meant to deceive the international community about the true conditions of concentration camps, but in reality, it was a place of starvation, disease, and death. Over 33,000 people died there, and tens of thousands were transported to death camps like Auschwitz. Inge and her parents were fortunate to survive their three years in Terezin, despite the horrific conditions. Inge was one of the few children who made it through. Out of the approximately 15,000 children imprisoned in Terezin, only about 100 survived. After the war, Inge immigrated to the United States with her parents. Despite the trauma of her childhood, she pursued a career in chemistry and became an author and public speaker, sharing her story to educate others about the Holocaust. She has written books, including her memoir **"I Am a Star: Child of the Holocaust,"** which recounts her experience as one of the few surviving children from Terezin. In podcasts, Inge often reflects on her memories of Terezin, the importance of resilience, and the duty to remember the past so that history does not repeat itself. Her voice serves as a living testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. You may find episodes with Inge Auerbacher on various Holocaust remembrance podcasts, where she recounts her experiences and her message of peace and hope.

Amalia Kussner - Miniature Artist of the Gilded Age

This is a follow-up to the Viktor Ullman episode, recorded in August 2022(link at end). Again - I am fortunate to interview Mark Ludwig (Director of the Terezin Music Foundation) and learn about the women at Terezin and their role in the music and the arts at this concentration camp. Though Terezín's male composers — Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, Hans Krása and others — are well known, many outstandingly talented women were at the epicenter of the camp's cultural community as well.  In this episdoe we will learn about the life and artistry of poet and composer Ilse Weber and about how she and women like Regina Jonas, who was the first ordained woman rabbi, and Bauhaus artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis helped their fellow prisoners transcend the horrors of Terezín. There were also the singers, pianists, and educators who comforted and enriched life within the walls of this concentration camp. Two images of the artwork from the children in Terezin will be posted at the podcast website, in the Viktor Ullman page (link). In March 1939, Nazi Germany occupied the Czech regions of Bohemia and Moravia. Pavel's family was called for a transport to Terezin in 1944. Two years later, they were told they would be sent to “the east.” That meant Auschwitz. Pavel Werner story is read to us by Elliot Levey in London.

The strikingly handsome couple looked like they'd stepped straight out of a Hollywood motion picture from the glamorous golden era. The reality was somewhat different.Anka and Bernd met in Nazi occupied Prague, in 1940 and it was love at first sight across a crowded nightclub. Like it was for so many young couples in wartime a whirlwind courtship ensued followed by a wedding. In December 1941, Anka and Bernd were amongst the first transports sent to Terezin, the first camp in Czechoslovakia where they remained for three years. During their time at Terezin, and despite the sexes being segregated, Anka became pregnant with a son. When the Nazis discovered this they were forced to sign a document stating that when the baby was born, it would have to be handed over to the Gestapo to be murdered. In the event, her baby son died of pneumonia two months after his birth.Anka fell pregnant again and this time tried her hardest to keep her pregnancy a secret, knowing full well what would happen should her SS captors discover it.Soon after she fell pregnant, Bernd was deported to Auschwitz in Sept 1944. Heartbreakingly Anka followed him. She was the eternal optimist and thought that as they had survived that long nothing could get any worse…Anka was at Auschwitz for ten days, a time she described as being like ‘Dante's Inferno, hell on earth.' Being young and fit, she was sent to work in a factory near Dresden as slave labour, never to see her husband again. By the spring of 1945 the Germans were retreating and evacuating concentration and slave labour camps. Anka, by now looking like, in her words, ‘a scarcely living pregnant skeleton' was transported on a filthy open coal wagon to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, a horrendous journey that took seventeen days. She weighed 5 stone. So horrified was she to see that she had arrived at yet another concentration camp she immediately went into labour. It's hard to conceive of the following scene. Anka, surrounded by the dead and dying, giving birth in the squalor of a coal wagon. An SS guard walked past and noticed. ‘Carry on screaming,' he told her. Baby Eva came into a cruel world weighing just 3 pounds. Anka attributed her and her baby daughter's survival to luck and timing. The day before she gave birth the Nazis ran out of Zyklon B gas. The day after she gave birth Hitler committed suicide. Soon after Mauthausen was liberated by the Americans.Returning to Prague with her tiny newborn baby girl, Anka stayed with relatives who had also survived the Holocaust. To her devastation she discovered her husband, parents, and two sisters had been murdered at Auschwitz.  Bernd was shot dead near Auschwitz in January 1945, just one week before the camp was liberated. He never knew his wife had fallen pregnant again.Anka met Karel Bergman, a Czech who had fought with the RAF during the war, and moved to Cardiff in 1948 to start a new life.  78 years on, Eva shares her astonishing story. Please be warned, there are some distressing scenes described in this episode. This is one of the most emotional interviews I've done. It reveals not only the depth of the atrocities committed in some of the foulest spots on earth,  but also that life hung on chance, degrees of fate, turn left, turn right, a flick of the whip. Buried within this story are also tiny fragments of humanity that have the power to change a life. How I wish I'd met Eva's extraordinary mother Anka who lived to 96 years old and never tired of telling her daughter ‘You don't know what you can withstand until you are put to the test.'

Welcome to the People Hidden in History Podcast series, You will hear a brief preview of an upcoming podcast episode – to be recorded and released later this fall. This is to be a follow-up episode from August 2022, which was an interview with Mark Ludwig, Director of the Terezin Music Foundation. The episode focused on Viktor Ullman, a composer and music critic, who was a prisoner at the Terezin concentration camp. However, this upcoming episode will focus on the many talented women at Terezin (pianists, composers, educators). These women comforted and enriched the life within the walls of this concentration camp. The Robert Schumann piano piece you hear at the beginning and end, was known to have been played by women pianists at Terezin.  To highlight these women, the Terezin Music Foundation – is excited to give them their due on the great stage of Symphony Hall in Boston at their next Gala Event on November 19th (details here).  Do listen to the first podcast (link here), that will give a better understanding of life at Terezin, and how those living there were under constant threat of deportation to Auschwitz but also how music still could enrich their spirits.

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

This February, I have the great honor of joining the Indianapolis Symphony for the North American premiere of Pavel Haas' remarkable unfinished symphony. Pavel Haas, a Czech Jewish composer, wrote the existing music for his symphony between 1940 and 1941 before his deportation to the Terezin ghetto/concentration camp. He was a full participant in the well known cultural activities of the camp, but was unable to complete the symphony before he was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. What Haas did manage to complete is not just a piece that is worth hearing as a historical curiosity, but is one of the towering testaments of both the time in which it was written, and of the unique and innovative Czech symphonic tradition. We are left with 1 fully completed movement, one fully sketched movement, and a "torso" of a third movement. The symphony was completed by the Czech composer Zdenek Zouhar after World War II. The story of Haas' death, which we will learn about on the show today is, of course, devastating. Hearing his music reminds all of us of the individual voices that we have lost. The voices of the 6 million Jews, and 6 million others whom the Nazis murdered. But this music also reminds us of the proof that Pavel Haas lived. Haas was one of the truly unique composers of the 20th century, and while his tragic story cannot be detached from his music, the music itself transcends its time and acquires the universality of all great music. It Is truly an honor to be bringing this music to the North American stage for the first time, and at a time of rising Anti-Semitism around the world, I hope that his story, his music, and his voice, will reach far and wide. Join me to learn about this remarkable work.

The Last Boy...the inspiring

Moving through the world with a voice that is always impassioned, Suzanne Cohn isn't one to whisper. But she had to as a hidden child, in 8 different Christian homes throughout the Polish countryside. She even hid, breathless, behind a Christmas tree while 3 Nazi soldiers searched one of them.  Listen to Suzanne recount this and other vivid memories from an unfathomable time.  She can still hear the first cries of her baby sister being born in hiding, and thinking she was a gift from above just for her. She can still taste the barley soup she received in a country hospital when she was so ill, her parents had no choice but to risk her coming out of hiding for her to get the medical attention she needed. She can still see the field of poppies her father showed her from the window of their room in the DP camp. Speaking of hidden, find out what was sewn inside the first stuffed animal Suzanne was given, as her family sailed to Australia to begin their new lives. This is Part 2 of a two-part conversation with Suzanne which took place towards the end of the pandemic. The way she experienced the quarantine, undoubtedly unique to anyone who survived the Holocaust, will inspire you. This episode is dedicated to every member of Suzanne's extended, adopted Christian family, who did so much to save her own family. The music for this episode is drawn from songs sung by the Keystone State Boychoir, who sang for Suzanne at her 80th birthday party. "O Holy Night," with soloist Bobby Hill, was recorded live with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, not far from Terezin Concentration Camp. Terezin (or Thereienstadt in German) is the setting for the play dedicated to Suzanne, The Last Boy...a new play with music. You can join Suzanne on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 at 6pm for a one night-only performance of the show, "a benefit on Broadway...a Yom HaShoah to remember."  To learn more about what promises to be an extraordinary evening, join the e-list here.  Pictured is Suzanne (2nd from left) after the war, with her mother and siblings. This is Part 2 of a great three-part conversation with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra violist Michael Casimir. If you, or someone you know, wants to be a professional artist, this is a must listen. Michael answers the big question - does he think young people should "go for it." The episode begins with him resolving the cliff hanger at the end of Part 1 - does he still hear those voices in his head that tell him he got the job because he's a person of color.  He gives props to teacher Roberto Diaz of Curtis Institute who inspired him to not go down the road of pursuing substitute positions reserved for black musicians, and instead "break down the door" by striving to be the best of the best and win a position outright based on sheer talent.  He talks about having stand partners at Julliard and Curtis  years younger than him who played better, and how it lead to panic attacks over thoughts of being an unemployed musician. Michael offers fascinating insights into the harrowing process of auditioning for professional orchestras. Host Steve Fisher also shares what he typically advises young people to do when they ask if they should go into the arts, and cites the exception he made with Michael's fellow Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) alum Bobby Hill in the aftermath of his spontaneous, viral performance for the Pope. Steve and Michael talk about the importance of authentic partner arts programs with under-resourced schools, the importance of community-based arts programs for both underserved AND privileged young people. Steve  tells a funny but poignant story about two founding members of KSB, from very different backgrounds, on a flight to South Africa. Steve and Michael also muse on other topics, such as how not boring your audience is more important than being artistically perfect, letting your body "sing," and what it takes to get your task master Dad to finally give you the keys to the car.  You can visit Michael's website here.  Join the podcast e-list by clicking here and be entered into a drawing to win a trip to New York to see The Last Boy...a new play with music on Broadway, meet the cast backstage and attend the VIP after-party.

Imagine you making the sign of the cross and saying your prayers at night just as you were taught, but it seems to make your mother sad.  In fact, every time you do, she cries. She's grateful that you know them, because they are the very reason you are still alive. But it breaks her heart because she knows what you as a little girl do not...you are Jewish. Imagine a year in a ghetto, days under a school auditorium stage, weeks in a factory utility closet, several years either hiding in a Christian home or posing as the owners' relatives.  Imagine arriving in Australia, knowing no one, but grateful you have survived and are finally free to start your life again. And then imagine meeting a young man from abroad, who calls you after he's returned home, and asks you to join him half way across the world to start over yet again. Imagine living the American dream in ways you could never fathom, but never forgetting - in the words of your father - that what matters most is not what you own, but what is in your heart and mind because no one can take that away from you. Meet Suzanne Cohn, a hidden survivor, who finds all of this still hard to imagine even though she's lived it.  Hate denied Suzanne's grandmother a long life. As a child, Suzanne witnessed her being selected by the Nazis, who would have her dig a her own grave and then murder her. As the 59 year-old matriarch was taken away, she predicted a long, fruitful one for her granddaughter, and that premonition has been realized. Fruitful in many ways, but what has remained central in Suzanne's mind and heart, is family.  The soundtrack for this two part episode is drawn from songs sung by the Keystone State Boychoir for Suzanne at her 80th birthday party. Bobby Hill, soloist. You can join Suzanne at the one night-only Broadway benefit performance of the play dedicated to her, The Last Boy...a new play with music. #004. Children of the Holocaust lost their innocence long before arriving at a concentration camp. It was a journey of sometimes small, sometimes big, terrible moments. For guest Michael Gruenbaum, the journey began at age 8, when he watched a Jewish couple leap to their death from their apartment balcony as the Nazis marched into Prague on March 15th, 1939. With many stops along the way, Michael completed that journey in May of 1945 when a train arrived in Terezin from Holocaust. The train door opened, and "the girl with the beautiful red hair" called out to him: "Meesha! Meesha! It's me, Inke!" He would never be the same, and either will you when you hear Michael recount this and other heart wrenching - yet hopeful - experiences. He reads excerpts from his compelling book Somewhere There is Still A Sun. This episode will move you, inspire you, and transform you. This episode features the Pennsylvania Girlchoir and Keystone State Boychoir singing Stephen Schwartz' 1999 Academy Award winning song, "When You Believe," from the soundtrack of the Prince of Egypt.  It's powerful lyric, "though hope is frail it's hard to kill," is fitting as we discover that in the place of the loss of innocence, Michael reached for hope. #002. The Last Boy brings you incredible survivor stories as they tell them. Before we continue with the journey of Sidney Taussig, meet Inge Auerbacher, another friend and survivor of Terezin. In fact, Inge led me to Sid. In my lively conversation with Inge today, I share with her two encounters that were deeply upsetting and unsettling. I love to tell stories, but these are two I wish I didn't have to tell. Hate. We know where hate can lead us. But where does hate begin? It begins with words. Words in our head. And then words on our lips. And then sometimes those words become hateful acts. You're about to go on a journey with Inge and me that will remind you in a very powerful, shocking way, that hate can come from anywhere, even religion. And anyone. Even a survivor.
