Ross Mitchell, Executive Director of Glen Foerd, discussed the 18-acre public park and historic site located along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, and a Fairmount Park property operated by the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.  Built in 1850 and enlarged in 1902-03, the estate—consisting of historic gardens, an Italianate-Classical Revival style mansion, and multiple additional structures—was saved from potential development through the activism of dedicated neighbors in 1983. Today, Glen Foerd focuses on welcoming a diverse community through a wide array of programs for all ages.   The Glen Foerd mansion is open for public visitation, free of charge, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visiting the mansion includes access to areas on all four floors of the house, where pieces from Glen Foerd's historic collection are on display alongside installations by Artists in Residence.   The grounds of Glen Foerd are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Access to Glen Foerd is only restricted during private events and after dark.    Glen Foerd offers free public summer events including Third Thursdays, RiverFest, and ArtsFest.  There are also organ concert series featuring the recently restored 1902 Haskell pipe organ.   Glen Foerd promotes art and artists through a Teen Arts program and the Artists in Residence program, soon to feature three artists and performance and word art.   Promoting environmental-based educational programming. Glen Foerd is a founding member of the Riverways Collaboration, a consortium of non-profit organizations working together to create connections among local waterways and communities along the Delaware River. The Riverways Ambassador Program provides high school students with a greater appreciation for Philadelphia's waterways, and to connect local students with paid hands-on learning experiences that teach them about careers in environmental stewardship. Other waterborne programs include kayaking and open boating and the Riverways boatbuilding program for high school students. Other programs include Lily P.A.D.S, a children's play and discovery program during the summer, workshops on crafts and art, and a community garden. Their signature fundraising event, The Wedding Crashers Ball will be held on Oct. 25, featuring graduates of the Pig Iron theater group, this year's theme will spoof the ‘Bachelor' TV series.   For more information visit www.glenfoerd.org

For the first time since 2019, Artsfest in Harrisburg (May28-30) may feel normal this weekend. The biggest difference this year is that the event will be held at Riverfront Park after last year's sojourn to City island. Normal probably is not a good word to describe Artsfest because it is one of the premiere events in Central Pennsylvania. According to the City of Harrisburg, Artsfest will feature more than 150 juried artisans and craftsmen from across the country, selling handcrafted works in 14 categories. There also will be 50 groups entertaining throughout the weekend and more than two dozen food trucks. We'll learn more about Artsfest in Thursday's Smart Talk from Harrisburg's Director of Communications Matt Maisel and Carrie Wissler Thomas, Executive Director of the Art Association of Harrisburg. Artsfest on Walnut didn't happen as planned. but the Springfield Regional Arts Council is still doing something to help promote the arts, support local artists, and meet their annual budget. Artsfest is the largest fundraiser for the nonprofit, and not hosting the weekend event means cutting a massive chunk of the budget out. Leslie Forrester, the executive director of the Arts Council, says about 18,000 people attend ArtsFest over two days. "This year, we weren't able to do it," Forrester said. "We were most concerned about the safety of our patrons, our artists, and everyone involved." This year, ArtsFest is looking a little different; it's online. With Virtual Artsfest, instead of walking around the street, you are browsing the web. Forrester discusses the financial impact of this change and how the group is still adjusting and supporting the arts locally.

Dems can’t quite get themselves to impeachment. It’s getting more and more difficult to sustain a rationale for not beginning at least an impeachment inquiry. It turns out the White Knight Robert Mueller doesn’t want to testify in public. Something about not wanting to tarnish his personal brand. Really? What’s up with all the walking-on-eggshells around the Special Counsel? As the Trump administration prepares to go after Julian Assange for espionage, investigative journalism is in the crosshairs. Make no mistake about it, this move is less about Julian Assange and more about gagging the muckraking press. And right-wing extremism is on the rise in Europe. Right-wing parties from France to Italy to Poland to Bulgaria came out strong in this past weekend’s EU elections. And, of course, Steve Bannon was all over the place. Theresa May steps down as Prime Minister of the UK on Friday. Make room for Boris Johnson. And, in perfect character, Tony Blair emerges from his dusty vault to blame Corbyn. Tom Corbett’s - yes you heard that correctly - Tom Corbett’s Charter Appeals Board met last week to grant an appeal to Catalyst Charter School in Pittsburgh and they will be meeting again in a couple of more weeks to possibly grant appeals for Eastern University Charter School in Philadelphia and Propel Charter School in Pittsburgh.   Eastern University Charter School had their charter renewal application denied by the Philadelphia School Reform Commission & Propel had their application denied by the Pittsburgh School District and Pennsylvania Department of Education.  Propel has 8 Charter Schools across Allegheny County and they are looking to establish their own quasi-school district in Western, Pennsylvania. The issue with the Charter Appeals Board is that it is dominated by five Corbett appointees whose terms expire in 2015 In today’s Last Call, SpaceX’s new launch of 60 Starlink satellites freaks out a bunch of people who thought aliens were finally invading. Meanwhile, astronomers are pissed saying Starlink will permanently alter the night sky. Elon Musk says he hears the concerns...the next batch will not be so shiny. Despite all of Tesla’s problems, SpaceX raised over $1 billion in two rounds of funding...in large part due to its new Starlink system. Sean YOLOing at ArtsFest. Sean says nothing else happened in PA this past week and a half. Totally unrelated, we’re looking for someone interested in covering what’s happening in PA to come on the podcast from time to time.   Free Will held its 4th Annual Pints & Paws at Free Will event last weekend and brewed up something extra special with our Friends from Harley’s Haven for the cause—Haven, a New England-style IPA hopped with Cashmere, Mosaic, and Citra. $4 from every 4-pack sold will be donated to Harley's Haven Dog Rescue.
