The Glen Foerd mansion is open for public visitation, free of charge, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visiting the mansion includes access to areas on all four floors of the house, where pieces from Glen Foerd's historic collection are on display alongside installations by Artists in Residence. The grounds of Glen Foerd are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Access to Glen Foerd is only restricted during private events and after dark. Glen Foerd offers free public summer events including Third Thursdays, RiverFest, and ArtsFest. There are also organ concert series featuring the recently restored 1902 Haskell pipe organ. Promoting environmental-based educational programming. Glen Foerd is a founding member of the Riverways Collaboration, a consortium of non-profit organizations working together to create connections among local waterways and communities along the Delaware River. The recent plans announced by China's Tsingshan to convert nickel pig iron (unsuitable for batteries) into nickel matte (an intermediate for the production of battery-grade nickel sulfate) has shaken the market, causing nickel prices to pull the brakes on its bull run. The price uptrend was driven by the widespread belief that nickel demand for batteries would boom shortly, while supply of battery-grade material would not increase at the same pace. Tsingshan's plans, however, could completely change the supply-demand landscape for battery-grade nickel, but not without a significant environmental cost that automakers might have to assimilate. In this Platts Future Energy podcast Henrique Ribeiro discusses these developments with independent nickel specialist Lyle Trytten, Platts clean energy senior analyst Michael Mccafferty, and Platts metals pricing director Scott Yarham.

The urgency of climate change means it is not sufficient for environmental scholarship to describe our complex relationship to the natural world. It must also compel a response. TIMESCALES: THINKING ACROSS ECOLOGICAL TEMPORALITIES gathers scholars from different fields, placing traditional academic essays alongside experimental sections, to promote innovation and collaboration. This episode asks: Why art? Why art … at all? With climate change and environmental catastrophe looming large, what purpose does art serve in pressing conversations about environmental futures? Three TIMESCALES contributors are here to answer that question: -Patricia Eunji Kim, assistant professor/faculty fellow at the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies and a provost's postdoctoral fellow at New York University. She serves as an assistant curator at Monument Lab, a public art and history studio. Kim researches and teaches Greco-Roman art and archaeology, with a focus on issues of gender, cultural identity, and empire. Her in-progress monograph examines the art and archaeology of royal women from the Hellenistic world (4th–1st century BCE). -Kate Farquhar is a Philadelphia-based landscape designer at Olin and has worked at the intersection of ecology, infrastructure, and art for fifteen years. Her TIMESCALES chapter focuses on WetLand, an experimental floating lab created from a 45-foot-long salvaged houseboat in 2014 by artist Mary Mattingly. From 2015 to 2016, Farquhar served as program coordinator for events that accompanied its residency with the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities (PPEH) on the Lower Schuylkill River. -Dr. Marcia Ferguson, a professional actor, director, and educator, has worked as a theatre artist in Philadelphia regional theatre and arts organizations including the Wilma Theatre, Painted Bride Art Center, Act II Playhouse, Irish Heritage, Paper Dolls, the Mediums, Juniper productions, the Daedalus String Quartet, and the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. She has collaborated on seven original productions for Edinburgh and Philadelphia Fringe festivals, and has done theatre and film work in Los Angeles, New York, Rome, and Tokyo. She is senior lecturer in theatre arts at the University of Pennsylvania and has published two books and several articles on theatre. Her TIMESCALES chapter focuses on Pig Iron's work in progress “A Period of Animate Existence,” the subject of a discussion Ferguson moderated at the 2016 PPEH conference. Director Dan Rothenberg, composer Troy Herion, and set designer Mimi Lien were the 2016-17 artists in residence at PPEH. This conversation was recorded in November 2020. This is the third and final podcast episode in a series that has featured the book's three coeditors: Kim; Bethany Wiggin, director of the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities; and Carolyn Fornoff, assistant professor of Latin American culture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Summary In this minisode, Haddy and Yassi discuss their experience doing Quill Camp's provocation from Episode 7. Provocation (#artifpodcast): This is a durational sound piece that you create for yourself. Part 1 - Creating the piece: Go on a 15 minute walk in your neighborhood. When you get home, immediately use the voice recorder app on your phone to record yourself speaking for 30 seconds. Respond to this prompt: What was the most important thing you saw on this particular walk? Attempt to describe it with attention to visual detail. For twenty-nine more days, do the same thing. Make sure your walk happens at the same time each day. Use the “resume” feature in the voice recorder app to continue to add to the same sound file.* At the end of the thirtieth day, you should have a 15-minute sound file. Part 2 - Performing the piece: Go on a walk at a different time of day than your walks in Part 1. Listen to your soundtrack. Synthesize what you hear with what you see. --- Feel free to adapt this prompt to your own circumstances. If going for a walk in your neighborhood is impossible or creates anxiety, consider another activity (or even household chore) that you can perform wearing headphones. Robert Quillen Camp is a playwright and performance maker who often works with theater companies that create work using a devising process, including Pig Iron Theatre Company in Philly, with whom he wrote the Obie-award winning Chekhov Lizardbrain; NYC’s Hoi Polloi, with whom he wrote the text and lyrics for All Hands (with music by Dave Malloy) and the Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (PETE). Director and Creator Nell Bang-Jensen talks about her play “The Caregivers,” created in collaboration with Philadelphia-area home health aides, hospice workers and family caregivers, several who performed in the play. Part fantasy, part reenacted stories based on the caregivers' experiences, the social practice performance piece recently ran at Philly's Pig Iron Theater Company where it sold out all shows. Nell tells us what was fun and what was challenging about creating the piece, why it was important for her to pay the caregivers who performed in the show and how the audience responded. Her current focus: finding the next artistic home for “The Caregivers” now that the run has ended. This episode is a follow-up to an earlier conversation with Nell; if you missed it, tune in here: https://bit.ly/2DMlRqK. Theater artist, writer and educator Nell Bang-Jensen believes that instead of staging big shows on a main stage, theater producers might better serve their communities by finding out what people in the community are interested in and engaging them in the artistic process. That's the idea behind a new work in development at the Pig Iron Theater Company, where Nell is the Associate Artistic Director. In today's show she talks about "The Caregiver Project," a performance piece being shaped by caregivers in the Philadelphia area who are collaborating with Pig Iron, sharing their experiences with care and helping to create a show that opens in June. Nell also talks about her first real exposure to end-of-life issues through the hospice journeys of her Danish grandparents, what she hopes the audience will take away from "The Caregiver Project" and how creating the work has challenged her to represent caregiving in an accurate way while also devising a compelling artistic piece. To purchase a transcript of this episode please visit this page: TranscriptsLearn more about The Caregiver ProjectMentioned in the show:"The Commercialization of Intimate Life" by sociologist Arlie Hochschild Music: "Always Late" by Ketsa | CC BY NC ND | Free Music Archive
