Jane Strong began her lifelong love of horses as a competitive rider. When she left the world of traditional horsemanship behind, she had no idea that horses would ever become an integral part of her life again. It was not until she began to study the principles and practices of natural horsemanship that she came to understand what horses had to teach us about how we come across to others, about being in the moment and how to bring out the best in ourselves. Prior to returning to a life centered around working with horses, she was a professional coach and facilitator who has taught leaders and individuals how to 'take back the reins' in their own lives. She's coached young people and adults through transitions from home to school, recovery to sobriety and changes in their careers. Beginning in 2009, in learning about the rising suicide rate among veterans, Jane and her her partner David decided to focus their attention on this group of men and women who were sometimes resistant to talk therapy and whose symptoms were often only masked by medication. They based their program on what they had learned at Eponaquest Program. General Patraeus (Ret.) recognized this program for its soundness and sensitivity to these men and women who have served their country in this way. They have also studied the work of Dr. Peter Levine at the Somatic Experiencing Training Institute and both completed this program in 2015. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Jane's journey of working with horses Other-centered mindset and orientation of military service members...and horses Commonalities between horses and veterans How horses live in the present, rather than the past and the future, and how veterans can learn from it How working with horses can complement traditional forms of therapy for veterans LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The Eqqus Effect Web Site The Eqqus Effect on Facebook Change Your POV Book Club Don't miss out! The mission of Veteranology is simple: Help veterans leaving active service experience healthy and fulfilling transitions into the civilian world. This is done by interviewing veterans who have found success in their new life outside of the military, individuals who have created service organizations and non-profits that serve the veteran community, and professionals deeply integrated into the backdrop of veteran life, such as doctors, lawyers, and case workers. Jay is a Marine Corps veteran from Illinois, currently living in Denver, CO. He served with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines as a machine gunner. He left the service as a sergeant and attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, graduating with a BS in Economics. A few months after graduating he led a project called Pax2Pax, a bicycle ride across the country in honor of Lance Corporal Johnny Strong, a marine who had been killed in Iraq on a patrol Knight was leading. Knight’s team raised over $20,000 for charity. He now hosts Veteranology, a podcast which serves veterans by sharing the stories of vets who have found healthy and fulfilling lives after leaving the service. SUMMARY: There is one barrier to seeking mental health treatment that veterans seem to face. That barrier is often the one that is most difficult to overcome. It’s the barrier inside each of us, the internal stigma against seeking treatment. The whole “suck it up and drive on” mentality. The “I can handle this” mindset that binds us until we can’t handle it any more. So here are six warning signs that things are getting out of control. In this episode, Duane talks about six things that he has seen in veterans that he works with that indicate that things are spinning out of control. If any of these things, or most of these things, are present in you or veterans in your network, find a mental health professional to talk to! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Six signs that things are spinning out of control: 1. You just don’t give a crap anymore (about things you used to enjoy). 2. You just don’t give a crap anymore (about life in general). 3. You give too much of a crap about things (little things become huge). 4. Something in your life has more control over you than you have over it (like substance abuse). 5. Something in you has more control over you than you have over it (like emotions). 6. Someone else brings it to your attention (like a friend, family member...or the cops). SUMMARY: Doc Todd is combat veteran who proudly served our country as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman (combat medic) in the United States Navy. Since Doc’s honorable discharge in 2009, it’s been seven years of life and civilian transition for him, including the ups and downs experienced by many young veterans who have dealt with the hard costs of war. Now, Doc has had enough… enough with the pain, enough with not fitting in, enough with the sorrow and anger of having another friend take his life. So in 2017, Doc took a leap of faith leaving a budding career in financial management to pursue a mission focused on impacting veterans’ lives through music, just as he did eight years ago under the blazing Afghanistan sun, In June, Doc will debut his forthcoming hip-hop album, Combat Medicine – a follow-up to the album he released in 2009 about his emotions leading up to deployment. Combat Medicine is exactly what it sounds like – a no-holds- bar look into military life and veteran transition. His mission is simple – show veterans they’re not alone and save lives. His memoir, also titled Combat Medicine, is set to launch later this year. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Doc Todd's military experience and how it impacted him after the service Self-judgement and the damage it can do to a veteran's mindset Continuing to take care of the troops after service The need for honesty and vulnerability in a veteran's post-military life The genesis of the album Combat Medicine and what made Doc make the shift from a successful wealth management career back to music The frustration that lies in wanting to help veterans, but not being able to LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Doc Todd's Web site Doc Todd on Facebook Doc Todd on Instagram Doc Todd on Twitter Combat Medicine the Album Hey, It's Eddie and Bennett! SUMMARY: Dr. Anthony Hassan is the CEO of the Cohen Veterans Network, a network of 25 mental health clinics nationwide. These clinics are designed to improve the mental health outcomes for post-9/11 veterans and their families, with a particular emphasis on post-traumatic stress, through high-quality, free, and accessible mental health care. In addition, he leads efforts to advance the field through funded research initiatives and training programs to improve care within the network and beyond. Hassan is a veteran of the United States Army enlisted and Air Force officer with 30 years of experience in military behavioral health, serving as a military social work officer, leader, clinician, and academic. He served during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 on the first-ever Air Force combat stress control and prevention team embedded with the Army. He also led the largest military substance abuse and family advocacy programs in the Pacific. These programs were recognized as benchmark programs and training sites for all other Pacific bases. He most recently served as the inaugural Director and Clinical Professor of the Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families (CIR) at the University of Southern California School of Social Work. During his tenure at CIR from 2009-2015, Hassan was instrumental in the exponential growth of the school’s military social work program and community-based research on veterans and military families. He has strong relationships with the most senior levels of leadership in the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and Washington, D.C. SUMMARY: In this episode, Duane talks about his experience both as a combat veteran and a clinical mental health counselor, and outlines eight things that he believes that a veteran wants their mental health professional to know before working with them. Working with any client can be challenging, but veterans can be especially difficult because of the warrior culture that they are used to. This podcast talks about eight different points that he believes veterans would like their mental health counselor to know before working with them. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: The eight things a veteran wants their mental health counselor to know are: I’m not sure this is necessary I’m really, really trusting you The only reason I’m here is because I’m tired of feeling the way I do I really want to be able to talk… …but have no intention of doing so… …and will shut down if I feel like you’re judging me.
