Rick Hillier aims to change that, and he joins Brian to discuss the new “Heroes Among Us” project launching with Postmedia — and his worries about the general state of our military, and our nation, today. Hillier lays out in stark detail how Canada's world stature has sunk from its former greatness, why we're a “parasite on defence,” why the army is “essentially broken,” and why Ottawa's new defence policy doesn't reassure him in the least. He also talks about why he thinks Canada is being divided by leaders whose job it should be to unite us. (Recorded April 12, 2024) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Celtics blew the doors off an extremely undermanned Grizzlies team 131-91. While Marcus Smart wasn't available to play, him and his wife were in the stands and Celtics fans showed him an incredible amount of love. There were several points during the game where "Thank You Marcus" chants were heard. The Celtics honored him as the "Heroes Among Us" for all of the work he did in the community during his time here. They also played an amazing tribute video for him. It was a very heart warming game for sure. As far as the game is concerned, there's not a whole lot you can take from this. Memphis had 13 guys listed on their injury report prior to the game and had to run a very thin rotation. The story of the game outside of Marcus Smart was Jordan Walsh getting his first NBA bucket on a great transition dunk. It's always nice to see a good bounce back win after a tough loss. Social workers may not be a very visible profession but they work to protect and help some of the most vulnerable in our society. But as we continue to hear reports that we simply don't have enough social workers, what are we doing to also protect them and the work that they do? In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Malaysian Association of Social Workers, we speak to Dr Teoh Ai Hua, president of MASW and Saskia Blume, chief of child protection at UNICEF Malaysia, on why a Social Work Profession Bill is needed. Taylor died following a skiing accident when she was just a teenager. In the hospital when Taylor's parents were met with the fact that she would not be able to survive, they were offered the option of organ donation, which surprisingly was one of the easier decisions the parents to make. Tara talks about how she and her husband both grieved the loss of their daughter in very different ways and how talking to another couple who experienced a similar loss helped them. After their loss, they made it their mission to focus on the good. Part of that was that Taylor had saved multiple lives through organ donation, so the parents started Taylor's Gift Foundation to change the conversation around the topic and to support donor families. About this week's guest Tara Storch is president and co-founder of Taylor's Gift Foundation and is a marketing professional, award-winning author, and community leader. Tara and her husband Todd co-authored the award-winning book, Taylor's Gift, which was recognized as the ‘Most Inspirational Book' at the Books for A Better Life Awards in New York City. She and her husband were also recognized as “Heroes Among Us” by People Magazine. Opening up about her journey of finding hope and purpose after the loss of their daughter Taylor, she speaks publicly across the nation about her powerful “Outlive Yourself” message. Sharing her journey on Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Ellen Show, People Magazine, and other national and international media, she brings a message of inspiration that touches lives worldwide. In this episode of Nonprofit Architect, Travis talks with Juri Love, author, actor, motivational speaker, and single mother of two. Juri talks about what no nonprofit wants to talk about. Closing a nonprofit. When is it time to close the nonprofit? What is the process like? How do you move on after closing the nonprofit? I hope you enjoy this conversation with Juri Love.   Conversation Highlights:  {00:30} Introduction of Juni Love {12:10} How to keep your spirits up as you're working through challenges  {17:49} When you must shut down a nonprofit.   {21:20} Moving on after healing from the trauma of closing a nonprofit {22:50} Can a diverse lifestyle prevent you from being successful in one venture.  {25:40} Finding your priorities as a mom   {29:38} Working with high school and college students with internships. {38:44} Putting systems in place so the work goes on if you leave.     Remarkable quotes:    Start with rescues in high crime areas where you can be an intervention for the kids to not go to jail.  It's so easy in non-profit work to get bogged down by all the things that need to be done to run the program, let alone delivering the services that you want to do. It's important to set boundaries. When you start a nonprofit, people get very excited; nobody tells you how to stop. There are no good answers and that helped me to become a great journalist.          Resources:  IG @juripanda Facebook.com/juripanda jurilove.com      Bio: Juri Love Juri Love is a musician, model, SAG-AFTRA actor, author, a survivor of sexual abuse and homelessness, motivational speaker, journalist, Rotarian, Film/TV Producer/composer, and single mother of two.
