Rethink career success by testing, adapting, and staying open to unexpected opportunities.Career planning isn't as straightforward as we often assume—but according to Dorie Clark, that's actually a good thing. Instead of following a rigid path, she believes we should be “treating our careers like a series of experiments”—testing, iterating, and staying open to unexpected opportunities."People assume they need to have everything mapped out for the next twenty years," Clark explains. "But in reality, careers are built through testing, learning, and adapting—just like a scientific hypothesis."As a bestselling author and career strategist, Clark has spent years studying how professionals can future-proof their careers in an unpredictable world. She shares why informational interviews, LinkedIn strategy, and quarterly career check-ins are essential tools for anyone looking to make a career shift. “You don't want to be so mired in your plan that you can't take advantage of unexpected opportunities,” she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Clark joins host Matt Abrahams to challenge traditional career advice and explore strategic personal branding, the power of weak ties in networking, and why “reinvention isn't a one-time event—it's a habit.”This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn. Today, Aya is the Head of Editorial and Creative for Google Shopping, where she oversees the development and execution of merchandising and consumer content. She was previously the head of content and creator partnerships at Pinterest. In this episode, Aya takes us on her journey from her college days, where she trained as a Puppeteer, to that junior year college moment when she wanted to put off getting a job and instead applied for an experimental puppet theater fellowship. That opportunity would take her to Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Japan, and the UK, with the only rule that she could not have her feet on American soil for that entire year. That experience taught her to be courageous, independent, and resourceful in challenging circumstances; remember, there were no cell phones or laptops! Aya explains her transition to tech, how she remained fearless while tackling her new experiences, and what she has learned from her peers. She also shares why it's okay to be a beginner and that at various points in your career, you will be a beginner again and again, for better or worse, so you better start getting comfortable with it.

Activating the Four Types of Mentorship When Her Story of Success CEO Leah Glover Hayes was looking for mentorship to help her grow in her career and eventually start a company, she quickly realized that not all mentorship is created equally. And while experts tend to agree that mentorship makes a major difference in determining someone’s career success and fulfillment, few people are sharing specifics about how to find the right mentor and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Leah believes that there are four types of mentorship: Passive mentorship, peer mentorship, traditional mentorship and mentoring others. No matter where you are in your career journey, you can benefit from implementing one or all of these in your life.  In part three of this four-part series, Leah is joined by Anna-Vija McClain to discuss the importance of peer mentorship. Her Story of Success… Anna-Vija McClain didn’t intend to start Piccolo Marketing, but when she needed a source of income after leaving the hospitality industry, she realized that many business owners could benefit from her digital marketing skills. We dive into the role of racial preference, safety and perceived safety in New York. We begin our conversation by touching on the role of race, safety and racialized safety in school choices. Dr. Hailey tells the story of how attending a predominantly white private school piqued her interest in sociological dynamics at a young age. She goes on to tell us about her own journey with school selection and how she experienced NYU's focus on sociology as a whole as opposed to sharing knowledge solely to recruit her into their program was a big selling point for them as an institution. Dr. Hailey shares with us that taking time off between undergraduate and doctoral studies enabled her to develop the confidence she needed to succeed. Next, she shares with us some of the benefits of building strong relationships with students further along in their academic journey than she was. She tells us about the element of competition and the importance of protecting your ideas and gets real about the rollercoaster of highs and lows involved in grad school. The global human trafficking industry brings in over one hundred and fifty billion dollars annually. More than 25 million people -- many the most vulnerable among us, including children -- are victims coerced, tricked or forced into indentured servitude. Sex trafficking is an ever-growing business. During the time of COVID, business is booming, but it has become more difficult to uncover trafficking rings. Our isolation has kept us from seeing who might be a victim, or where they are located.Despite films like Pretty Woman that would persuade us the sex trade can result in a fairy tale ending, it is a life filled with hopelessness and despair, a life our guest Stacy Reed has experienced. Stacy is a survivor, author, poet, and motivational speaker. She has traveled internationally to educate and advocate for victims, and for 20 years has worked with people who experience alcoholism, substance use disorders, prostitution, sex exploitation, domestic violence, mental health, and HIV/AIDS. She has a masters in social work and is currently a PsyD student enrolled at William James College in Newton, MA. She's also Supervisor of Peer Mentorship at RIA House, a non profit on a mission to help end human trafficking and sex exploitation. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I work in a small team under 10 people on a new project that should be shipping soon. I have a manager who is leading this project, and I’m the most senior developer on the team. My manager tries to help with the project by writing code, but does it rather poorly. When he wants to implement new functionality, he creates a new branch and brews his code in this branch for 2-3 months, constantly complaining how hard it is to write code in our codebase. After he is done, the resulting code is unreadable, unmaintainable and untestable. He doesn’t write unit tests himself (which is weird, considering he was working as a QA before for several years) and usually breaks good portion of already written ones. I always have to go to his branch and refactor his code so it’s at least testable, fix broken unit tests and write new ones for his functionality. He always makes it look like our codebase is hard to work with, though the rest of the team doesn’t have this problem. How should I deal with this situation? I tried speaking to him directly, but he is pretty stubborn and thinks that he is doing everything perfectly. I can’t talk to his manager, since we have a pretty flat company and his manager is the CEO who I don’t have a direct access to. I work in a digital agency as part of team of 5 front end developers with varying levels of experience. We don’t have a senior / lead / director, it’s pretty flat. I have been told by management that we need to work on peer to peer mentor-ship because each of us have been guilty at some point of spinning our wheels on some problem when we should have reached out. The problem is we all work on different projects, there’s never 2 ““fed””s building the same site, and each site kind of feels like it’s own unique bowl of spaghetti. If you have any pointers about breaking out our code bubbles that would be amazing! Love the show, I hadn’t given non technical skills much thought but you’ve opened my brain! Thank you!

Let me comment on this whole, "Let's get a business mentor" movement. These are the five most common mistakes: 1) Get a self-proclaiming business mentor who never had any other businesses, yet he is teaching business. This was WRONG, because they usually don't have any hands-on experience. 2) Get a millionaire mentor who is too far ahead of you. This was WRONG, because they are talking a totally different business language as they can show you how to scale the business from $100M to $200M while you are just trying to make the first $10k. 3) Get a mentor who is not precisely doing the thing you are trying to do. This was WRONG, because even though somebody might know how to trade crude oil, his knowledge might not apply to growth hacking. 4) Get just one mentor. This was WRONG, because nobody knows everything in all areas of business. 5) Your mentor doesn't listen to any advice from you because he doesn't feel you are on his level. This is WRONG, because once you get to certain level of business, your mentor might learn some things from you as well. There may be things that you mastered but he didn't. You might want to reciprocate (and you should) by adding value to his business. With regular, vertical, mentor-mentee relationships it is usually impossible to achieve your desired results. What is the best solution then? Get several mentors who are slightly ahead of you and are doing things that you are trying to achieve. Once you get to their level, get help from more advanced people in business. This is why Peer 2 Peer Business Mentorship is the FASTEST and MOST EFFECTIVE method of mentorship. It is not entirely vertical and helps the entire group of people in the community to grow their business together and also allows them to help mentor each other.
