Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals discussed Cohen Veterans Network , a national not-for-profit network of mental health clinics for post-9/11 veterans, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserves, and their families, providing high-quality, accessible care. Founded in 2016 by philanthropist Steven A. Cohen, the network began in part because his son served in the United States Marine Corps. CVN currently has 22 Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics in high-need communities across the country serving 20 states, providing services in-person or via CVN Telehealth, face-to-face video therapy for the entire military family including spouses or partners, children, siblings, parents, caregivers and others as defined by the veteran or service member. Concentrated programming addresses suicide risk and couples therapy. Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today we are chatting with Kimberly Gold and dive into what caring for yourself looks like within your marriage and for yourself. Sometimes BUILDing your marriage starts with you first BUILDing Your Mental Health. Here are our highlights from this episode: Kimberly shares her milmarriage story that starts with sliding into DMs and a shift to work on physical health. She shares her journey of resentering, healing and recovering from a toxic work environment. “You can't be a good partner when you're not being good to yourself.” Stop using positive distractions. Be brave enough to acknowledge that you need help. Let's stop normalizing or silencing your trauma, hurt or feelings. Know your options. Look into different health care providers like Steven A Cohen's - Cohen Veterans Network at https://www.cohenveteransnetwork.org & providers highlighted on the Military Marriage Day app About Kimberly Born to a Korean woman who would become the first Korean female Chief Warrant Officer Five in the US Army, Kimberly prides herself on learning directly from her mother who taught her how to turn obstacles into opportunities. As a military kid, Kimberly has been assigned to seven military bases and can recall attending at least five schools. In elementary school, Kimberly stayed with a babysitter when both her parents deployed for the Gulf War. Kimberly recalls a time where she deeply disappointed her patriot mother by not accepting an appointment to the Air Force Academy. In the words of Kimberly, she was “DONE” with military life. To show her mother exactly how done she was, she went on to spend the next two decades serving military communities, even deploying to Kuwait, as a humanitarian and is happily married to a foreign born spouse who serves in the Army. First and foremost, I would like to give my thanks to the veterans who have served and to the families of veterans who have served on this Memorial Day. There are links in the episode notes for those of you who might be struggling to find your way back home from your service. Remember, there is no weakness in seeking help–there is only strength in the recognition that we accomplish the most as a species when we work together. So, if you need help; reach out for it. It is there for you. Now, as for the podcast information: there is not going to be a full episode this week. I have been away for a few days at a family member's wedding. I just couldn't get the editing finished for the episode, and I didn't want to rush it. This next episode is going to be epic–as the kids like to say. It focuses on a book by clinical psychologist Dr. John Rosegrant and his reading of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Honestly, it's a fascinating conversation. I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to bringing it to you all next week. So, hit the subscribe/follow button and turn on notifications so you can be in the know for when it goes live next week. In this episode of The Neutral Ground Podcast, I speak with Dr. Tim Overton. We grapple with the reasons why many veterans find it difficult to reach out for help when it comes to mental health; we discuss the various methods of help that are available for veterans; and we even talk about one of my favorite subjects: the important role that narratives play in building resiliency and purpose. Mental health concerns are never the same from person to person; however, I think we do a good job of trying to understand some of the unique barriers that veterans might face from that of civilians. I was pretty shocked by some of the statistics that Dr. Overton provides for us here regarding rates of suicide, ideation, and how much more they can be reduced through therapy. Dr. Overton is an individual and couples therapist for the Cohen Military Family Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Widener University. He completed his postdoctoral residency at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans, where he specialized in the treatment of rural and underserved veteran populations. His clinical expertise includes Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for depression and anxiety. Ben tells us his story of moving from existential crisis to podcast host and now to professional speaker. This month, The Neutral Ground Podcast is going to take on a very serious topic of discussion--a pressing one: veterans and mental health. Often times, this subject can seem overwhelmingly large, especially when we take a look at the current rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicides. However, what I hope to show in my series is that there is hope. There are practical ways that we can help veterans start down a pathway of healing--and it doesn't involve politics, and it doesn't involve budgets. It just involves your time and an open ear. In the conversations to come on the podcast, we're going to speak with people like Amanda Huffman of the Women of the Military podcast and Ben Killoy of the Military Veteran Dad podcast. They will bring their own unique views on how we can help veterans make a smoother transition back to civilian life. You need not have served to find value in these coming episodes. What we're going to discuss applies to all, because, at the end of the day, these are human problems. Join us on this journey. With the end of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts, one of the most important things that we can do is make sure that we give ears to veterans so that they can begin to build narratives of their experiences. This is vital because having a strong narrative in place not only helps to build closure to one incredibly important part of their lives, but it also builds clarity of thought and a sense of peace. In this first episode of our four-part series, I'm going to lay the foundation for how history and literature have given us the tools to help. We just need to accept that the experiences are there. I go back to Homer and the Iliad and Odyssey to show how the site of glory needs to move at the end of conflicts from the field of battle to the domestic realm. We need to raise the level of communal engagement to the level of heroism. I also talk about James Joyce's Modernist take on the epic hero, and how listening and being there for others becomes a type of heroism. We also dive into arguably the most well-known author-veterans of World War I: Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway gives us a truthful but bleak vision of how difficult it can be for the soldier and the family to try and navigate great trauma in the home. However, I do think there is some hope there at the end. Finally, we take a look at a beautiful letter from a wife to her husband from the World War I era. We discuss the unique problems military members and veterans face regarding mental health and why finding help isn't easy. We discussed the stigma around mental health specifically in the military and veteran communities and why it seems to be worse at times than in other communities. Anthony explained what mental health care services are in place for veterans, and where the gaps exist today and how the Cohen Veteran Network was created to fill those gaps. We talk about the workforce inside the clinics, the shortage of mental health workers in America, and how the Cohen Veterans Network fosters their network of clinicians on staff. The Cohen Veterans Network is continually experimenting with new technological advances and cutting-edge treatments that they believe can help veterans with their mental health. The CVN platform has become an incubator or pilot partner of choice for many up-and-coming technologies serving the mental health space. Join my conversation with crisis management and earned media guru, Mark Herr. For the last 20 years, Mark Herr has led or helped lead the communications efforts of three iconic financial services companies, Merrill Lynch, AIG, and SAC Capital/Point72 Asset Management. He shaped their responses to some of the highest-profile crises in the financial world, helped rebuild their reputations, and built the brands of several other properties. At Merrill Lynch, Mark created and executed the communications strategies as the company dealt with the turn of the century Tech-Wreck, Enron, and Auction Rate Securities litigations, as well as the other legal, regulatory, and public policy problems the company faced. Joining AIG in the heart of the 2008 financial crisis, Mark led AIG's Media Relations team as the company navigated being the poster child for the crisis. Working closely with CEO Bob Benmosche and other C Suite management, Mark devised the responses to the company's fall from grace and was a key architect of its reputational comeback. Hired by Steve Cohen and SAC Capital to create and build the firm's global communications function, Mark served as Managing Director and Head of Global Communications. He used his expertise in crisis communications and media relations to design the strategy that took SAC from being viewed by many as a pariah to a firm that enjoys 60 percent approval. He rebranded SAC as Point72 and built the brands for Mr. Cohen's VC firm, Point72 Ventures, his industry-unique analyst training vehicle, Point72 Academy, and his philanthropic veterans mental health treatment program, Cohen Veterans Network. Mark also created Point72's internal communications program and launched its digital and social media properties and strategy, while establishing its talent recruitment messages. A former reporter, political operative, litigator, regulator, and government official, Mark brings a unique 360-degree understanding to what it means to be in the blinding spotlight of public opinion and how to turn around the narrative from bad (or worse) to better. As a builder of brands, he also knows how to establish the right public presence for new firms. Mark has now founded his own communications boutique and among his projects, Mark is consulting with Mr. Cohen on Mr. Cohen's purchase of the New York Mets and advises other companies in the pharmaceutical and financial services industries. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/paulwoodshow/message
Sam Whitehurst, your host, is addressing a very difficult subject in today’s episode: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of our veterans. We are all facing the challenges that are implied in dealing with this pandemic — challenges such as the fear of the disease itself, the rise of unemployment rates, the economic situation in the following months, and even years, and the lasting impact of social distancing. How are the anxiety and stress caused by the current situation impacting the mental health of our veterans and their families? Sam is joined today by Dr. Caitlin Thompson, who is the vice-president for Community Partnerships at the Cohen Veterans Network, which is a network of health care clinics across the U.S. that focuses on providing mental health assistance to veterans and their families. Dr. Thompson shares today the mission and vision of Cohen Veterans Network, the work they are doing in response to the pandemic, and she also talks about her thoughts in regards to what we can do to ensure that our veterans and families continue to have access to mental health services to prevent the rise of suicide rates among our veterans. Key Takeaways: [5:58] Dr. Caitlin Thompson talks about her professional background and her work at the Cohen Veterans Network. [11:05] The issue of access to mental health not only for the veterans but for their families. [13:35] How COVID-19 is impacting veterans and their families in regards to access to mental health? [16:15] Ninety-eight percent of the care Cohen Veterans Network provides is via telehealth. [17:20] Social isolation tends to be a high risk factor for suicide and mental health problems. [18:11] CVN Presents has continuously updated information, videos, and groups to engage the community in other types of activities besides therapy. [19:16] The stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment. [20:28] Dr. Thompson addresses the concern in regard to confidentiality while working with telehealth. [23:45] CVN believes that if you served one day at the military, you deserve care. [25:55] Dr. Thompson talks about the challenges people are experiencing using telehealth. [30:17] How to help a family member that has suicidal thoughts? [33:20] Dr. Thompson encourages people to continue to reach out for the care that they need. Mentioned in this episode: Dixon Center: Reaching America At Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services, we believe our veterans and military families can succeed where they live. Dixon Center is named after Staff Sergeant Donnie Dixon, who was killed in action on September 29, 2007, in Iraq. Staff Sergeant Dixon was a father, husband, and soldier who always placed the mission first and the safety of his fellow soldiers above his own. Retired SFC Greg Stube is a speaker on leadership and character. A serious injury sustained during a mission forced him into medical retirement. This didn’t stop him from serving, though, as he became the spokesperson of the Green Berets after recovery. “The lessons we learn in the service of our country, we owe them back to the country. It reminds me of George Washington. At the end of his service, he took the uniform off and he was asked to be our first president and he reluctantly agreed. But he kept serving.” - Greg Stube Greg Stube - Special Forces Command Greg joined the Army Infantry in 1988. Then a boy with the grandeur of youth, he recalls being under the impression that they were going to turn him to Rambo. What he found was something entirely different with all the supervision that somehow felt suppressive to his freedom and potential. He got the opportunity to join the Special Forces, and wounded up in a special training program. For the next 19 years, he spent his career as part of the Green Berets. The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care. Transition by Injury During Operation Medusa in Afghanistan in 2006, Greg sustained several fatal injuries. He spent a year and a half recovering from the life-altering experience, and credits his A-team and faith with his miraculous survival. Refusing to become just another victim of warfare, he rose to the challenge of his commanding general after his hospitalization. He got into public affairs and became the spokesperson of the Green Berets for four years. Building Himself Back The lack of a sense of purpose after early retirement has made it difficult for veterans to move forward. Greg knows this. He laments how young men and women can say right off the bat that they are retired, when it’s not a place they’re supposed to be. “I think that’s a moment of time in your life where if you exit immediately without developing anything or salvaging anything that’s left of your military self, it’s almost like such a big reset button that you may not get back on your feet completely.” - Greg Stube He has therefore made it his mission to continue serving the country in other ways. He owes the nation that much, after all the lessons he’s learned through his military career. Greg has since moved on from active military duty to authoring, public speaking, and charity, with focus on leadership and building one’s A-team. Alexander Lowry Gordon College Alexander Lowry is a Professor of Finance at Gordon College, head of the Master of Science in Financial Analysis program. He's also into advising businesses that students can potentially work for. In this week’s episode, Alexander shares with us an affordable option to get a finance degree for veterans who wish to transition into the finance world. “From my perspective, hands down, the best leadership guys are military... But on the flip side of that, you’re competing against people who have been doing a certain job for many years.” - Alexander Lowry Alexander Lowry - From History to Wall Street Alexander was a history major and always assumed he was bound to go to business and finance. Deviating from this path, he got into management consulting. This field, he thinks, is a great training ground, as it gives exposure to different industries and sectors. The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care. But even after over a decade in this profession, his “Wall Street itch” just had to be scratched. With a Wharton Masters in Business Administration experience, he was finally able to move across. MBA vs MS in Finance For most people who’d like to be part of the business industry, it’s mostly a choice between MBA or finance. Picking one is easy. It’s a matter of whether you know where you want to go in the future. Taking up MBA entails learning all the subjects from operations, accounting, and finance. There’s the eventual internship that matches you up with the right job that suits you. You also get to choose any field of specialization that you want. But if you’re pretty set on finance, you wouldn’t want to take up two more years of learning basically everything. Taking up a one-year finance program like the one offered at Gordon will save you over a hundred grand. It will also allow you a few years of working experience. On Military Fitting in Finance A lot of hiring managers seem to prefer experienced financiers over military veterans. It’s the easy way, but it’s not always the right way. Alexander maintains that veterans have a lot more to offer, owing to their training and inherent leadership skills. “When hiring someone, I only need two things. I need to know they’re intelligent and passionate. Because if you have those, I can train you to do any job.” - Alexander Lowry Good news is, many companies have been exerting effort to understand veterans and the actual value they can bring. The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care. Jean Marie Dillon is a Certified Financial Planner and Accredited Financial Counselor. She provides nationwide, sales-free financial counseling and planning services. Today, she is an expert in coaching service members and veterans to financially transition back into society. “Military, especially military veterans, lack the financial literacy that they need to transition back into civilian life. And that’s why i feel like my services and what my colleagues bring to the table bolster that knowledge.” - Jean Marie Dillon Jean Marie Dillon - The Reason Behind Jean Marie recalls gravitating the same sphere with over 60 other financial planners all chasing the same dollar, the same high-network individual. It took realizing the existence of a “subset” of the economy that make practical financial guidance for small-time individuals or groups for her to hop on a different train. “There’s a huge segment of the population who has a need and they’re not being fulfilled by traditional financial advisers.” - Jean Marie Dillon This was precisely when she turned around and made financial counseling her career, instead of going the path of a typical financial adviser for big names. Serving for the Military: Then and Now Jean Marie started out in her profession primarily to provide value-added service as a military financial counselor. When it occurred to her that she needed a steady, full-time job, she went to private practice. Even then, she didn’t deviate much from what she previously did, essentially doing what she’s done before for military members and their spouses. Adapting her experiences to her focus population, she’s transitioned into helping veterans and civilians at present time. The Army: An Incredible Lot Jean Marie’s experience working for the army was a constant state of awe. Endowed with entrepreneurial spirit, the army is a group of ingenious individuals. “I’m in constant awe of what they know and what they can do with what little they have.” - Jean Marie Dillon This first-hand knowledge only managed to fan her desire to serve the population. She carries this sentiment, even in private practice. Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show. We would love to hear from you! Sapphire Pavilion by Dave Grogan Previously a Navy Judge Advocate, Dave Grogan has had his fair share of court-martial cases for which he prosecuted and defended. He’d gone to many places and shook hands with people from all walks of life. Now, he weaves history, international intrigue, and military experiences into the Steve Stillwell legal thriller series published by Camel Press. The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care. “I got to do stuff that other attorneys can only dream about doing.” - Dave Grogan Dave Grogan - The Beginnings of a JAG Journey He was a CPA and on his second year in law school, bound for the corporate track, when Dave ran into a Navy student in a party. He remembers being regaled by stories of deployment in the Mediterranean as part of USS America, something that Dave has always wanted to do. “I never thought you could be a lawyer and a naval officer at the same time.” - Dave Grogan He changed courses and switched his background to apply to the Navy. His initial goal was to serve for three years, get back out, and go to corporate law. At the back of his head, he knew he’d continue his service as long as he enjoyed it, and enjoy it he did. Dave got assigned to the naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, prosecuting and defending court-martials. He went back to the US and interviewed for companies. But he never cashed in on his initial plans. Gusto. It's time to tame the chaos of payroll, benefits, and HR. Committing to the Navy During those days when he went back to the US, Dave remembers talking to his wife while he looked over Tokyo Bay. It was at that moment of being away from home and being treated with a cosmic view of where he stood in life that Dave decided to shelve the original game plan. “I thought, ‘Why in the world would I get out and go back and sit in an office back in the States?’” - Dave Grogan With his decision to stay in the army, he got deployed to Cuba and the Persian Gulf. He got sent back to the US to get a Master’s degree on international law, which opened a myriad of opportunities for his career. His exposure as the adviser of commanders, both on national and international level, contributed to a lot of the ideas that inspired his writing Sapphire Pavilion. JAG Turned Writer While he was on his last tour as part of the Pentagon, the idea for his second book occurred to Dave. Every Friday night when he would drive back home from work, he listened to a podcast on veterans. “I remember listening to some stories, in particular about the Vietnam war and some Vietnam veterans... and I came up with the idea of writing a story that would attempt to honor Vietnam veterans and also wounded warriors.” - Dave Grogan Don’t forget to leave us a 5-star rating and review if you enjoyed the show.
