BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Dalilah Garcia, president of FemCity Brownsville, was recently awarded the Athena Leadership Award from Athena International.According to Athena International, the Athena Leadership Award “celebrates exemplary leadership.” The group says it is also reflective of a quote from Plato: "What is honored in a country will be cultivated there."The award was presented to Garcia at a luncheon hosted by Brownsville Chamber of Commerce and held at the Brownsville Events Center. After the event, Garcia gave an exclusive interview to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service. She explained what FemCity is all about and how the Brownsville chapter embraces women from all walks of life. She said the chapter has 17 millionaires, along with women that did not even have a home when they joined. “I was raised to serve and lead,” Garcia said. “My other last name is Guerrero, which means warrior. So I was born a warrior, and I'm an advocate of South Texas. This has actually been on my resume for a long time. And, because I was born to lead and serve… as the oldest of eight siblings, this has been something that is just innate for me. However, until 2017 (when I started FemCity Brownsville), I didn't believe enough in myself, to know that this was something that can be done in our community.”Here is the interview with Garcia. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Key Takeaways:The best laid plans can go out the window. Abundance starts in the mind. When you shift your mindset from lack to abundance, your reality will be transformed as well. Our thoughts create our words, our words create our reality. How we speak, think and receive people shapes how our world can be. It's deeply ingrained in non-profit workers that doing good work has to take a toll on the worker, that they need to treat themselves less in order to serve the “greater good”. The truth is - that kind of thinking is out of alignment from the purpose and is greatly unsustainable. “Just because somebody is in a non-profit doesn't mean that they should make less… there has to be a shift in the mindset in regard to that” - Kathy Lambert Reach out to Kathy Lambert at:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kblimpactpartnersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathy-lambert-kblimpactpartners/Website: https://kblimpactpartners.com/ Be more confident, credible & convincing to your board & supporters without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy.Learn to manage your mindset, lead yourself and others more effectively and have the meaningful conversations that drive your most important work. We’re excited and honored to have Chandra Clark joining us as our guest for today’s podcast. Chandra knows how to keep the momentum going! She is a passionate advocate for young people, women who are facing adverse circumstances, and adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. She is joining us today to talk about her journey up to now, spending more time on self-reflection and personal growth, race, motherhood, faith, and forgiveness. About Chandra Chandra Clark is a non-profit executive, a model, a speaker, and an author, and she is also the founder of the lifestyle brand, Be Loved. She is currently serving as the Director of Community Outreach for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Kansas City. Through Be Loved, Chandra can inspire people seeking emotional healing and restoration, and she can encourage them as they embark on their paths of personal transformation and finding freedom. For the last fifteen years, Chandra has served in non-profit leadership by developing innovative programs and creating opportunities in the community to support and advance the lives of youth and women. She has led several workshops and seminars focused on faith, self-esteem, and professional development. Chandra was honored to receive numerous awards and recognitions like the ATHENA Leadership Award, from the Kansas City Chamber, The Top Connector in Education and Entrepreneurship from the Kauffman Foundation, and The Most Influential Women in Kansas City Business, from the Kansas City Business Journal. Some cool news At the time of the recording of this podcast, Chandra had just received the awesome news that the Kansas City Business Journal featured an article about the Access Internship Program that she created for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Access Internship Program supports female and minority-owned small businesses, while also helping to prepare the youth in Kansas City for the workforce. The driving force behind Chandra’s work in non-profits The driving force behind all the work that Chandra does in non-profit organizations is her desire to do good things for others, to be a servant leader, and to give a voice to those who don’t have a voice for themselves. How it all started Chandra explains that many of the people who work in positions of service do so because they have a story to tell. And her passion for working with non-profits started with her journey towards understanding and healing herself. Chandra is mission-based Chandra is very mission-based. And although she works from her heart in everything that she does, her work can be very taxing. A space of transformation Currently, Chandra finds herself in a transformational space. Ever since she started her career, she has devoted all her time to being of service and doing good work for other people. But she has begun feeling a little stuck lately, so she has now decided to transition towards space where she can spend more time focusing on her life and exploring different aspects of herself. Putting herself first Chandra has learned that if you keep on denying parts of yourself, you will not be able to thrive, and a part of her is crying out to be heard and telling her that now is the time to start putting herself first. Suffering Even though people get recognition for what they do and their bios look impressive, there’s still a tremendous amount of suffering that goes into advocating and being a voice for other people. Becoming an advocate Chandra explains that she grew up in a traumatic environment that was fraught with abuse, and at an early age, she became an advocate for her mom. Unfortunately, in doing that, she learned to self-sacrifice. She later transitioned her self-sacrificing to the non-profit, and as a result, she remained unaware that she was the number one person in need, and her needs have not always been met. An interesting time of transition Now, Chandra is going through an interesting transition. She has realized that she must have decided, as a very young child, that she didn’t matter, so she began to focus solely on other people. Finally facing herself Now, she is forcing herself to say “no”. And she is learning how to sit with herself, unpack all the layers, and finally face how she truly feels about herself and her life. Chandra’s vision Chandra ultimately wants to be loved for becoming the very best version of herself, sharing that openly, and creating a platform for other women to share their stories about how they are overcoming adversity and owning their truth. If you think that, tucked away in Alaska, there isn’t much in the way of creativity or outstanding work, Karen King, president and CEO of Spawn Ideas will certainly prove you wrong many times over. The full-service, independent shop, with offices in Denver and Seattle, embraces its Alaska — and it is an enticing environment steeped in the abundance of the state, especially the outdoors. In fact, the agency has been named one of Outside magazine’s best places to work for five years running. But what happens at the agency indoors (and, in fairness, outdoors as well) is testament to King’s leadership. A native Minnesotan, King is a mindful leader who embodies a form of leadership that is profound and caring — filled with passion and drive, much like the agency’s staff and the place they all call home — yet leavened with accountability, industry and hard work. King’s intellect and curiosity are perfect foils, bouncing off each other to form a world and work view that puts curiosity, generosity and cultural understanding at the fore. Make no mistake, though, King and, by extension, the agency think as big as Alaska — and their evolved approach and desire allows them to, as King puts it, constantly “punch above our weight.” Though Alaska courses through her veins, Minnesota still peeks its way out at just the right times. To wit, the element of surprise and humility in winning an Athena Leadership Award, an important leadership award for women, makes way for gratitude. Additionally, the notion of “Minnesota Nice” is never too far afield and still part of who she is, but firmly founded in her biggest love, Alaska. Though it could be easy to have a chip on ones shoulder, being in the country’s most northernmost frontier, King chooses another path — one that attacks the constant of change, keeps her always game to lead with courage and further shows, that when it comes to great work, “it can come from here.”
